3GS, power on hangs at apple logo, plus all kinds of other weirdness

started a couple of days ago, calendar app would crash on startup... or out of the blue, the whole thing would crash back to the apple startup logo.
anyway, it won't get past the logo on it's own, but I can get into restore mode and do a clean restore from there... all seems to work, or not... i've done about 15 to 20 iterations on this so far, but I just can't get this thing stable...
I've seen all kinds of weird things, Itunes suddenly losing the device... iTunes saying after it lost contact with the 3GS that there's only 16 gig there when there's 32, syncing Itunes library to the device causes, at varying moments, a crash of the 3GS...
not workable this way.
my old iPhone3G works fine (I pulled it back out the box, upgraded to 3.1.2, put all the normal apps on it, synced with me.com... it just works...
I've done recoveries, from a backup or as a fresh machine, also did *well tried* the erase/reset idea, it just came back to the apple logo and hung from there.
This thing worked just fine from 3GS launch day until now... bring it back and let 'em fix it? My hunch is that there flash memory that is flaked, or there's something with the CPU that's messed up (as if power/throttling isn't working as it ought to.).
is there anything I should have tried that I haven't done yet?
thanks,
Michael

thanks, was afraid of that.
called T-Mobile here in the Netherlands on what the procedure is, apparently I've got a TWO year warranty on the thing, so, they'll have it for up to two weeks, and then I should have it back (working) again.
cheers,
Michael

I powered up the macbook air but it just shows question mark flashing, tried to re install os x but it just hangs at apple logo. I rebooted holding down Alt and it onloy shows USB drive. Done a Hardware test and it shows no faults. Any Ideas!!!!!!!!!!???????????

Time to make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP for service. You can try booting in the Recovery Partition by holding down the Option key when you hear the start up tone. Then run Disk Utility and attempt to repair the disk. If it comes up with errors after repairing the disk 3-4x then you know it's dead.
    Good luck.

  • IMac G4 hangs at apple logo screen after 10.5.8 update

Hello, thanks for any help you can provide with this problem.
Machine is iMac G4 flat panel. Did an erase and install of Leopard over firewire from iMac G5. Immediately copied 10.5.8 combo update I'd downloaded earlier from the G5 and ran it on the G4. The update completed successfully, albeit slowly, and I clicked restart. After a long wait at blank desktop, machine rebooted on its own. It got as far as the Apple logo screen with spinner spinning, and then it hung. I didn't want to jump to conclusions that it was indeed frozen, so I let it sit there and spin for at least 2 hours. Even for an old G4 this seemed like a bit much, so I forced it to power off and tried again. Still hangs.
At this point I figure something went wrong with the update, so I did another erase and install of virgin Leopard over firewire from the same G5. Repeated update process. It once again completed successfully, I clicked restart, it paused, then rebooted on its own again. To my great dismay, it once again hung at the spinny spinner Apple logo screen.
Now, this is the fourth G4 machine I've done this on in the last week, and the other three are running normally. 1 was another iMac G4, the other 2 were eMac G4's.
    Any suggestions?

Interestingly, I brought the G4 into work today and connected it to the G5 with FireWire and turned both on. For some reason (I'm not Mac Pro here, so this might be obvious to some of you) the G5 booted from the G4's HDD and the system started up just fine. I ran repair permissions on the G4's HDD and restarted it. It now boots up fine. Not sure if it was the repairing permissions that fixed it or booting the OS on a different machine. Either way, problem is resolved. Thanks for your input.
    Edit: Fixed typo

  • Mac wont boot, hangs at apple logo screen

    Hello everyone,
I have a 2006 Imac. This morning I tried to boot and it hung at the silver/white screen with the Apple logo and the spinning circle of lines below it. The computer will just hang at this screen.
Every time I tried to boot I can eventually hear the hard drive turn off. I recognize the sound when the computer was working and I put it to sleep it made the same sound. Anyways, it will hang on that screen for however long before I turn it off. I am no expert with macs, I tried loading the install disc but it wouldn't even load that and now I can't seem to eject the disc either. Please help!

I have been having this problem for the last several weeks on my MacBook Pro–I think a 2006 also. Mine will hang just before the Apple logo so the whole screen will be silver. Every time this happens I turn it off using the power button and just try again. Usually on the second try it works, sometimes the third. I've been experimenting with how long I hold the power button down, although it shouldn't be too sensitive to that and I don't think I am finding a correlation. I have had this occur in the past but only as flukes, not as a consistent pattern like lately. I'm getting worried that someday this thing will just not start up.

  • Cannot boot (Hangs on Apple logo/spinning wheel)

I just turned off my computer by holding down the power button after Parallels froze on me, and now my Mac won't start up. It hangs on the white screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. Some more info:
    1. I can get into Hardware Test and Mac OS X Installer
    2. I have a Time Machine backup (if nothing else works)
    3. I have tried Disk Utility and Hardware Test and they both tell me everything looks "OK"
Do I have any other options besides reinstalling Leopard? And what could have caused this to happen???

    Hi
im experiencing the same problem as well
i downloaded and installed a few updates on sunday and i thought it was normal for the apple logo and spinning wheel to come out after the update
i went to bed thinking that it would take awhile
when i woke up it was still stuck at the grey screen
    can any1 please help?
i dont hv my dvds with me (studying in nz, dvds are at home)
ive tried pressing shift to go into safe mode but i cant (maybe doing it wrongly)
    n ive tried resetting pram
btw the MBP im using was on tiger but i upgraded to leopard last year
any suggestions please, really need to get on my assignments and all :P

  • Dual G5 Hangs at Apple Logo

I have read through some of the other forum posts. Others have reported similar issues. I have a Dual G5 Power Mac, Little bit older, so it does not have the Liquid Cooling as far as I understand it. I had the symptoms of fans running full when sleeping. I'd have to power down, let it rest and power up. No problems after.
Now I have a new symptom, the system hangs upon bootup. It gets to the Apple logo (so I know it finds my primary SATA drive and system), it will sometimes begin twirling the circle, and that's it. If left to sit, it will ramp up the fans until they are full. I have not been able to find my boot DVD, I did find a OS 9 disc, but my system is too new for that, I did try it though.
Aside, someone mentioned not being able to eject, use the front side button. Yes, there is a button, get a tooth pick or paperclip, find the holes just below the door, and about 6th or 7th hole from the right side of the case, you will find a small, lite green, button mounted a few cm back from the grill. Power on, depress the button, and the tray will open. Place your DVD in the tray and reboot.
Ok, so before I go taking my beast into the Genius Bar, is there anything else I can check outside of cleaning, resetting the SMU, checking the drives, etc? The fan that I think is causing the most issue is the upper drive fan. I did remove my drives and clean, tried booting driveless (? Folder came up) and it did seem to calm down on the fans.
    Any help is welcome.

Minor update: I was able to clean the fans more so, and removed one of my drives. The fans are running normal now, yet my primary drive will still not boot. Same symptoms, and Safe Mode doesn't boot either. Listening to my drive, I am concerned that the drive might have a failure. It spins up on boot, then sitss, you can hear a steady hum-zip, hum-zip and it just keeps repeating.
I'm going to see if I can load the drive in another computer, if it reads clean then maybe it's my SATA Bus. Otherwise the drive has died.

  • IPhone hangs at Apple logo, and not recognized by pc

I've got the weirdest problem. My iPhone 3G is bricked. It will go on, display the apple logo, then display the round "budy" symbol and then hangs for 10 minutes and then it resets itself and starts over.
I tried to hook it up to my PC but it is not recognized, not by my PC nor by iTunes. The iPhone will charge when connected to the PC, but it's just not transmitting data.
I can get the iPhone in recovery mode. I turn on iTunes, then I hold the home button, slide the connector in while keeping the hold button down, and then the itunes logo with the cable and the arrow shows up. iTunes however does not recognize it. It is not shown in device manager either.
I can also get it into DFU (i think). I turn on iTunes. The phone is off, and connected via USB. I hold the power button for 3 seconds (it boots after 1), then press the hold button for 10 seconds (it goes off after 7) and then release the power button while holding the hold button. The iPhone is now in DFU mode (i think, as it does not respond to anything but a forced shutwodn with pwr+hold). Still the PC and iTunes do not recognize any device is connected. As if it is not even there, but the iPhone is being charged.
I can't restore it now, and I don't know what else I can try. Any suggestions?

You've done most everything there is to do, on that computer. Try it on another computer before regulating it to paperweight status. It's probably the hardware, but I've had them surprise me a time or two

  • IMac won't start up - just have apple logo plus 'processing' symbol active?

    Unable to start computer.

I work at an Authorized Apple Reseller and we are having the same problem with one of our showfloor models.
Model: iMac 21.5" (Brand New Core i3, etc)
Problem Description: When you press the power button, you hear the Apple chime and the screen turns on. Instead of booting normally, the screen shows the Apple logo, a spinning 'loading' circle (I call it a ferris wheel), and a loading bar below that. Typically the loading bar is for an EFI Firmware update, but I don't remember updating the iMac recently. Anyways, the loading bar moves once, starts over, and then the iMac shuts down.
Possibly Related Issue: Several days leading up to this issue, the computer was very noisy. It sounded like the hard drive was working overtime on indexing or something, but it ran fine and spotlight wasn't even indexing at all. I walked by it yesterday and noticed it wasn't on. I pushed the power button, and the problem it has now started.
I will keep searching the forum for a solution, but I have a feeling this is a hardware issue that will need to be serviced by Apple.
Sidenote: If anyone has any experience contacting apple as an Apple Reseller about repairing a computer before the warranty starts, any advice would be greatly appreciated
