3gs Random "accessory not for Iphone turn on airplane mode"

Out of no place last night my 32 gig 3gs started to have this message. It will not stop doing it. In fact it is doing it almost every 5 to ten minutes. I have restored using the itunes restore. I have restored as a new phone. I have restored even using my computer at work. Is this known problem? And is there a fix other than me driving almost 3 hours to the nearest genuis bar?

Unfortunately, this sounds like moisture or direct water damage around the 30 PIN connector...that message is triggered by certain accessories being plugged into the 30 PIN that output specific resistances on a certain PIN to show an accessory not made for 3G or 3Gs...
Check the water damage indicator under the 30 PIN...you will need a light to view and it's a very tight fit...if you see red under there you have moisture or direct water damage and the Apple store is not going to help you...
If it's still completely white and the other water indicator in the headphone jack is also completely white...I'd certainly take it to an Apple store for a replacement...

I restored my phone and am still getting the message. Does anyone have any ideas why? I don't have any apps installed.

Set the phone aside in a cool, dry place and let it dry for about 5 - 7 days. Do not attempt to use it and do not charge it. You can put it in a baggie with raw rice and shorten the drying period by a couple of days, just be sure to clean out any rice debris afterwards.
After it dries give it a full charge and try it again. If you get the same message you will need to do an out-of-warranty replacement of your phone, in the US the cost is $199.

I backed up my iPhone 3GS to iCloud. Activated my iPhone 5 and restored it from iCloud. But iPhone 5 will not backup to iCloud, only to my MacBook. When I try to turn it on on the phone it gives me an error that I must turn on Wi-Fi or turn off Airplane mode. Wi-Fi is on an the phone is talking to the internet just fine and airplane mode is off, but I still get the error. Is this a known problem?

You mean take the cover off of the iPhone, to look inside? I'd recommend against it. Even with warranty expired, you might qualify for an out-of-warranty service, which for 3GS is $149.
Other than that, any repair/service options are going to cost money. You might want to see if a wireless carrier will let you get a new contract & phone.
Out of curiousity, you're just using at as, basically, an iPod Touch, if there's no cell provider? Did I understand that correctly?

Sorry saker, but if you have not backed up your data anywhere, and you told the computer, in essence to clear the data and restore it with your iPod data, then you are pretty much out of luck....

To delete visual voicemails requires data or internet access via a carrier's cellular network. Visual voicemail access with the iPhone is not done via wi-fi. It is done via the cellular data or internet network only.

resolution:
get to your network settings - disable wifi, then enable 3G and cellular connection
Now get back to icloud backup menu and try to enable. of course it wont work. back again to network settings switch wifi back on, and got to icloud again. This time it will allow you to set your backup

On my way to Walgreens...plugged iPhone 3GS into my car charger (non-Apple product) and suddenly the message said: "Accessory not optomized for this iPhone...You may experience noise caused by cellular interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength." Now, even without the charger plugged in, the message pops up about every 20 seconds, and the ringer won't work. I'm also getting no sound from the external speaker. I tried shutting the phone off and a hard reset...nothing works. Please help!!!

Check the dock connector on your iPhone for dirt/lint/debris etc. and clean it.

To unfreeze it, reset it by holding the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.
To troubleshoot your problem with backing up to iCloud, this may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your iPad that is preventing the backup from succeeding. To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding. To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again. If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again. If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again. If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails. Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

I am having the same issue here... just upgraded my 5s to 7.1.1 (never jailbroken - factory unlocked) and then boom... NO Service!!! Searching ... that's it. currently using Smart Telecom Sim... at first it was working for me... after 6-7 hours, it started the No Service issue. I cannot send a text or make a call...

My girlfriend's iPhone was stolen whilst on holiday in London. The phone was in airplane mode and didn't appear on Find My IPhone, which was installed and enabled (all set tis correct other than airplane mode). I sent a remote passcode lock to the phone.
The next day the iPhone appeared on the map, obviously having been switched on and had airplane mode switched off. My question is, will the remote lock apply immediately the phone comes back online?
I assume their only opting at that point is to do a factory restore which would wipe all the data anyway, right?
Also, can't Apple track the IMEI number regardless of a restore and a new SIM? Or the network operator that the phone was originally connected to?

This notion that is being floated around that Apple's hands are tied due to privacy and legal concerns doesn't impress me much at all. My iPad was stolen about a month ago. I have the receipt, the serial number (from my box), and the MAC address (from my home router's log). Armed with that information it's technologically feasible to track, deauthorize, and eventually recover my device. But for reasons I have been unable to ascertain Apple refuses to provide anything like this for their customers. And as their devices become increasingly smaller, more desirable, and more expensive theft of them will also increase.
But to my point about legalities and privacy concerns: whether they are true or not, it certainly doesn't stop Barnes and Noble from blacklisting their Nooks when they are reported stolen. At least, that's what I found after buying a Nook color off craigslist. When I tried to register it online it refused. When I called in to customer support they informed me that it was a stolen device. If I wanted to remove the blacklist, they explained, simply provide the last 4 digits of the credit card, the name on the receipt, and the total dollar amount of the store along with store number where the device was purchased. If I lacked any of that information, I could simply contact the store and retreive it from their records. Since I was not the original owner, however, my option was to turn the device over to the police and hope they returned it to the rightful owner.
When I explained this scenario to Apple Care he insisted the limitation was due to privacy concerns. That defies logic, however, when one considers that it's the original owner (and only through the poilce and Apple's legal department) who must report the device stolen. And, like B&N, it's the customer who is able to provide personal information to blacklist (as well as unblacklist) a device according to his or her own volition.
I've been thinking a bit about this for some time...plenty of time to think on the couch sans iPad anway...and I've been wondering why in the world does Apple not allow users to deauthorize and blacklist iDevices through iTunes itself. At that point Apple has no involvement in the process and even the barest of legalities are irrelevant. My assumption is that Jobs has thought long and hard about these issues, including my described resolution, so it begs the question as to why Apple refuses to do anything about stolen devices. I hope one day I can ask him because that is a question I would like answered more than anything: what is the rationale for the hands-offs approach to this? I can't fathom one myself but I have to guess there is one. Apple hasn't come across to me as a callous company so I'm reluctant to attribute it to that.

There's a long story behind this but, what basically happened was that I lost my iPhone and I was in the process of erasing it through find my iPhone. I canceled the erase when it asked for a phone number... Because my brother found my iPhone. It's currently in airplane mode and I'm scared that it will be erased if I take it out of airplane mode... What you should do is connect it to the computer you normally sync with, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Back Up. Then go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases. This will back up your phone on your computer as it is now and transfer your apps and other purchased media to your iTunes library. Then take it out of airplane mode. If it starts to erase, let it finish. When it's done, connect it to your computer, open iTunes and go to File Devices>Restore backup, then restore the backup you made earlier and you won't lose a thing.
