Are the replacement 3GS' new or refurbs? Anyone know for sure?

He may be expecting a replacement right now to be new stock since the 3GS hasn't been out that long and so may not have generated many refurbished units yet. But whether you get a new or refurbished unit is at Apple's discretion and may depend on any number of hidden factors, so there's no way to predict which you will get.

Ipad replacement - new or refurb ?

My Ipad first gen is two months out of warranty and it not holding charge. Apple has offered a replacement for a small charge. My question is; are these 'new' or 'refurb' products. I cannot find the definitive answer to this question, even though it's been asked many times.
The genius bar guys told me twice they were new products, but I just can't get a definitive answer from either Apple or the forums that confirms this. I am based in the UK so UK specific response would be appreciated.

Packaging for replacement stock will differ from that for units being sold, but the process is the same. I don't trust anecdotal reports, but it's not impossible that given the thousands of units being processed someone in the depot could not slip up and send out a unit that hasn't been through the process. It's absoutely very rare, if indeed it does happen.
I believe if they (Apple) want to swap-out my new device for a recon after 14 months (too short timings), they should also offer a 50% discount on a new device for those that want it,
Sorry, but that's a totally unrealistic expectation. No manufacturer, anywhere, that I've ever heard of offers such a program.
Again, Apple will give you a refurbished unit. If that's not acceptable to you, you'll have to decide what you wish to do. There's nothing more we can say.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

Thank you for trying to help. I followed your instructions, it took 6 hours to download, and then said it could not solve the problem (something to do with error 9?). It will have to go back to Apple - its only 3 days since it came out of the package and its very disappointing for him. Looks like I have to hang around in the Apple store in Plymouth all tomorrow until they can fix it, or will change it. Thanks for your help.

I have an airport extreme and express setup. My extreme is in my 2nd floor office with windows facing the water. My dock is about 250 ft away down a very steep hill. I have the express about 100 ft down the hill in an electrical waterproof box attached to a tree as high as I could install. The signal is weak and I'm thinking I might have to buy another express. Any thoughts on the best setup for me. I ultimately want to control speakers(hard wired in) down at the dock with my iphone. I have a receiver coming with airplay built in.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

Set the cartridges aside and close the access door
Unplug the printer
Plug the printer back in
Wait until it tells you the cartridges are missing
Insert cartridges
Close door.

No. apple will not facilitate your ability to use a stolen phone.
If it is locked with YOUR Apple ID and you can't remember the ID or password, start at https://iforgot.apple.com. If you can't reset it there, call AppleCare and speak to someone in Account Security. Be prepared to prove your identity.
If it's locked with someone else's ID, they must release the lock.

New or Refurb

I just purchased a new Itouch 4th generation 32GB from the following Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FA1O18/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
In the product description there, it sounds like a new product, correct, sold directly by Amazon.com? One of the best prices I saw for a new Itouch 32GB, 4th generation. I saw refurbs cheaper directly from Apple, but decided that amount of saving wasn't enough for the difference between new and refurb.
I received it today. Unlike most Amazon orders, amazon.com, nor any variant thereof, does not appear anywhere on the shipping box. The return address on the box says exactly the following:
Returns Center
3837 Bay Lake Trail , Suite 115
North Las Vegas, Nevada 89030
USA
No mention of any company. Don't know whether it is from Amazon or Apple, or somewhere else?
Why "Returns Center"? I did not return one of these, and it is supposed to be a new item.
I used to think Amazon was a very reliable company. Not so sure now.
Does anyone here recognize that Nevada address? Is it perhaps an Apple address, the same address I would have received an Apple refurb from, if I had ordered a refurb from Apple?
The product appears new, but refurbs can look new. It may work fine. Yet, I do not want to pay for a new item, and receive a refurb instead, that I could have bought for less money.
Packaging--inside that unmarked shipping box--a cute plastic container holding the Itouch. That container certainly looks authentic. But I wonder--if I bought an Itouch in an Apple or other store--does one buy it directly in that plastic container, or is that container inside a product box? (No product box in this case--just the plastic container inside the unmarked shipping box.)
Is there a way I can tell if it is a refurb--such as from the serial number? (I could give that here if requested.) The container also says model A1367, and MC544LL/A?
Any clues? If it is a refurb, that Amazon is selling as new, I will return it and buy one elsewhere, and make a major complaint to Amazon. I don't like such deception. (Of course, I do not know anything for sure now. But that shipping box sure looks suspicious to me.)

Yes, the box was sealed, and there are no scratches or anything, the product appears to be new.
Refujbs or returned items can appear as if new though. And not so hard to seal a box.
That shipping box just seemed suspicious to me. No company name at all on it, and that return address to "Returns Center".

Connect your 3GS in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to reset the passcode during this process:
iOS: Unable to update or restore and iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

For me, I don't let fear stop me from these types of opportunities. With that being said, I can say that all of my BestBuy, RadioShack, and Wirefly contracts were actual verbatim contracts from Sprint, Alltel, and Verizon and the deal with Wal-Mart is the same verbatim contract as Verizon's with the only exception being that the Iphone 4 is $52 less at Wal-Mart.
I hope this information helps people out there and I hope some people will go to Wal-Mart or Sam's Club instead of Apple or the Verizon store to buy their Iphone 4.

Glad you do your research before purchasing, as a lot of people don't. And then they come on here and complain that they got "scammed" by 3rd party retailers and say it's Verizon's fault. But those are the people who don't actually read what they sign.
I think those 3rd party deals are great if you're willing to go outside Verizon and you know what you're getting into. I believe it's Amazon.com that has the stipulation of not being able to change anything on your account for 181 days after upgrading - that can be a deal breaker for some people.
