3gs sluggish

My iPhone 3GS is becoming incredible sluggish, is this a common issue that can be resolved or is it just the way it is?
my iOS is 4.3.2 - I have around 10gb free also.
It's driving me insane.

i've had the same problem with my 3G since i updated the software about 2 weeks ago.
just about everything is slower, but pathetically slow google maps in particular. it was bad enough slow before... but now it's just brutal.

  • Is your 3GS sluggish and jerky on 4.2.1?

How's your phone performance on 4.2.1? When I open apps or folders, the screen doesn't open smoothly. It's jerky and stutters. Sometimes games pause for a tenth of a second or so. It's not silky smooth like it was on 3.1.3. I was hoping the 4.2.1 upgrade would fix this, but it doesn't.
Is your 3GS silky smooth on 4.2.1, or does it stutter and pause?

I suspect a glitch in your OS. Every 3GS I've updated runs smoother & snapier. My suggestion would be to restore your phone as a "new" device in iTunes(not from backup), followed by syncing your content back to your phone. You will lose all saved data on your phone. Doing this will rule out any problems with the OS. If you decide to give this a go, first find & delete all the .ipsw files on your computer. There should only be one, but delete all that you find. You will have to turn show all hidden files & folders on to see them. The .ipsw is located here:
    OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    7 & Vista: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
This will force iTunes to re-download a new copy of the OS.

  • IPhone 3Gs map erratic, sluggish, confused

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone 3Gs phone. My previous 3G phone was bullet proof and the map function worked great. The new phone's map function is sluggish and when it finds me, it routinely things I am about a quarter to a half a mile away from the correct location. I returned a phone to the apple store for this very problem and the replacement does the same thing. Does anyone know how to reset the software completely. My GPS navagon software is useless now. The compass function does work.

Have you tried to restore the iPhone?
You can restore the iPhone and set it up as a new device. That would erase everything on the iPhone and put it back to the state it was when you got it out of the box.

  • IOS 5 very sluggish on 3GS

I updated to iOS 5 on my iPhone 3GS with no installation issues that many have mentioned.
However, I am finding that apps launch VERY slowly on the new OS.  Even if I just try to open Settings, I stare at a blank screen for 15 seconds.  Now, if I close Settings and relaunch, it is nice and fast.
Games that use GameCenter are extremely sluggish for the first 10-15 seconds, then they work normally (actually, they are very peppy even compared to iOS 4).
Tiny Tower is a perfect example.  If the phone even sleeps for a moment, the app turns very stuttery until I am welcomed back to GameCetner.  Then it blazes.
Finally, many of my apps crash when I first launch them.  If I launch them again, they work fine.  If I kill the app, put the phone to sleep then wake it, the app has a 50% chance of crashing the next time I launch it.
If others with a 3GS are experiencing these sorts of issues, then I'm sure a patch (or app patches) will fix it.  If I'm the only one, then I'm a bit scared that Apple has turned my phone into a snail.  The thing that really worries me is that the early reports are that there have been no issues like this with 3GS.

Same here. Really sloooow. I'll try a full restore, but I don't have high hopes. It feels like every data access is really slow. Things like loading an album cover use to be snappy, now I have to wait a few seconds to see the cover after a new song starts.

  • Angry Birds sluggish on 3GS

    Hey
Noticed that Angry Birds is quite sluggish on my 3GS and its quite annoying to play, affects playing really
I've got nothing else running in background and I've tried a hard reset and it's still the same
It ran better on my iPod 3G
    Any suggestions?

There's nothing you can do except for buying a newer iDevice. Angry Birds also ran terribly on my old iPhone 3G. Although the 3GS has the same video chip as the iPhone 4, it has a much slower CPU and half the ram. Besides trying a full restore and setting up the phone as new there's nothing else that might be able to help. As newer apps come out and old ones updated you will notice that most will become noticeably sluggish on your phone. On my 3G everything from Facebook to the new York times became unbearable slow to the point where I just went out and bought a 4S.

  • Is iOS 4.3.1 still sluggish on iPhone 3Gs?

    Can anyone please confirm?

Well I'm still testing, but so far still looks crap to me.
It seems the opening animation is still horrible, but on most apps the second time you open an app (if it is already loaded) its smooth. This tells me when you first hit an app that it's loading is interfering with the animation. (never did this before 4.3)
The ipod app is still glitchy animation wise, and settings still has a second or so pause before appearing.
The camera app openeing speed seems to have improved a little though, but the double tap to reveal background tasks is totally inconsistant. (pause before doing anything, then glitchy crappy animation on screen move up).
Ultimately, I think that this is just a case of apple dumping the 3gs, and 'pushing' people to get a more powerful iphone (4 or even 5 later this year). The update doesn't even mention 3gs stability in the release notes, so Apple either basically have their head in the sand, or as I expect, just don't give a crap.
Will test some more, but this isn't looking good.

  • IPhone 3GS becomes sluggish after a few hours

    Hi,
have my 3GS since one month now (it's a week 31) and now experiencing the problem that after some hours of usage/standby the iPhone becomes slugglish. This means that i.e. after pressing the home button to wake it up from standby it takes the phone about five seconds to turn the screen on. Using the iPhone is much more slower as well. When putting the iPhone back to sleep mode it will again take about five seconds when waking it up the next time.
I can fix this by rebooting the phone and the system will stay fine for about 24 hours. Then the error comes back. Having this since two days now. There was no software installed or updated since then.
    Anyone experiencing similar issues?
    Thanks

Thanks. However, I have never done so in the past and did not experience the problem.
BTW: Maybe other users are having the same problem as well, just found his here on the board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147538&tstart=0
...and in another forum: http://modmyi.com/forums/general-iphone-chat/674171-home-button-lockscreen-delay .html
At least the ones from the other forum are having problems with connecting to wifi in those situations as well.

  • IPhone 3GS battery issue + sluggish

I've had this phone for probably around 18 months now, and it's in a state of permanent frustration for me.
Apart from it being as sluggish as anything - which I'm sorry I don't care what new technology these Apple guys want to orgasmically claim to be amazing, it doesn't work as intended.
But the worse thing is I could be at anything between 40% and 70% battery charge left and it will just turn itself off.  When I try and turn it on again it says there is no battery left and I need to charge.
Then after about 2 minutes on charge it shows the battery charge where it was at before it switched itself off.
Anybody hear of anything like this?

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are:
Power your iPhone off and on.
An iPhone reset, whichis done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
If no change after the last step, your iPhone has a hardware problem.
If one of these steps resolves the problem with your iPhone powering off when the battery level is between 40 and 70%, the next thing to do is re-calibrate the battery level indicator. This is done by fully charging the battery followed by using your iPhone until the battery is depleted with your iPhone powering off when the battery is depleted. Connect your iPhone to a power source and leve it connected to the power source until the battery is fully charged.

  • Appstore sluggish, iPhone 3gs very sluggish overall after update to os5. Are there any fixes?

My phone is almost useless after the upgrade to os5. Lost apps cause it didn't back up properly. The keyboard is unresonsive, app store work half way, internet is very slow using wifi withhighspeed cable. How soon will os5.1come out? Seems that 5 is very buggy. Is there any way to go back to os4?

I am also facing the same probem, suggestion/help needed. My iPhone3GS become very slow and all the apps are not responding after updated IOS 6.1.3

  • 3gs unbearable slow and very buggy/crashing after upgrading to iOS4

I have a iPhone 3GS with the most up to date OS (iOS4). Ever since I upgraded to this operating system I have noticed a VERY significant slow down in everything. messages takes ages to open even when "fast app switching". Sometimes up to 10 seconds. Also Ive noticed that my iPod app occasionally skips on songs similar to what CD players used to do when you knock them. I attribute this again to the sluggishness of iOS4. Typing in iOS4 very often results in me typing the message then waiting for 30seconds or more for the phone to register what i typed.
Then loading some apps will take much longer than before and a lot of times (like the farmville app) will load for 20 seconds then crash and take me back to the home screen. (I usually reopen the app and it works the second time)
Then the more annoying part is that my phone frequently freezes up and will either take a minute to unfreeze or about twice a day actually crash and restart the phone. This sort of thing has never happened before with iPhone OS 3. Occasionally that OS would hiccup but it was always speedy.
Ive done the hard reset many times with no improvement. Even tried double resetting (hard resetting twice in a row). Ive also restored my phone to factory settings and wiped it clean twice to see if that would fix it but it didnt.
There is no way it should be this terrible. Apple usually makes amazing products so I cant believe iOS4 has been this bad. Im seriously considering downgrading back to iPhone OS3. At least then it was usable.
If there is anyone out there who knows how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it.

If you restore your iPhone as a new phone (not from a backup), you will simply lose your SMS massages and some application data such as game high scores.
e-mail and wi-fi password information will have to be re-entered but apart from that you won't lose much else at all.
You simply have to sync your phone once you've restored it and all your contacts, calendar, music etc will be copied back over from iTunes

Lots of calls that people try to make to me never show up, and ones that do drop. It takes a few trys to get my calls to go out. Texts are the same way. Internet is sluggish and has trouble loading things without WIFI. My phone also has an overall sluggish-ness.

I tried again to restore last night. But now, restore wont complete. An error comes up after the firmware download to the phone. Now the phone is in recovery mode?

  • Trying to activate my 3GS and the phone will not recognise the sim and will not activate

    Help Please
I have changed my call plan with my service provider from contract to PAYG and have just tried to upgrade my 3Gs to IOS 5.0.1. I have purchase a iPhone 4 and was using the 3Gs as  back up.
I set the phone to factory restore as it was being sluggish and I felt a restore would be the best option. The restore went ahead but the phone will not accept that I have a valid sim in the phone and will not activate stating that the servers cannot activate the phone.
The sim is the new PAYG sim given to me by O2 and I had even arranged for the number to be transferred to the PAYG sim. I am at  a loss to understand what has happened as the sim will work fine in an old 8gb Iphone 2g and other mobiles. I have not kept the old contract sim so I am unable to insert that to see if that was the problem.
How can I get my 3Gs acitated and working? Do I need to contact O2 or take the phone to an Apple store. Any advice would be appreciated.

You need a valid micro-sim. to acivate.

  • Is iOS 4.3.1 on an iPhone 3GS slower than iOS 4.1?

I updated the version of iOS on my iPhone 3GS from 4.1 to 4.3.1 via restore. I didn't set up my iPhone as a new phone because I've never seen that as necessary (and I have a lot of settings and apps). Since I've updated, my iPhone seems noticeably more sluggish. Sometimes there's a bit of a lag in the animation as an app is launched, which isn't too bad, but in the camera app today, there was a very noticeable delay when trying to start a video (there has always been a rather noticeable delay in switching from camera to video mode): the video wouldn't start for a couple of seconds after pressing the red button.
Things seem fine after a double reset, but then gradually slow down again.
So is it iOS 4.3.1 that is slower, or is it something on my iPhone?
I have over a 100 apps with a lot of stored data, so I can't start again from scratch. I also would like to preserve app folder and icon locations.

One particular problem is that once an app is downloaded from the app store, the actual part of the process where the app icon says "Installing..." takes an insane amount of time.

  • Is it necessary to upgrade my standard iphone 3gs 4.1 to a higher version for a better outcome?

What i was wondering about is that do i need to update my 2yr old standard iphone 3gs ios 4.1 to a higher version
For me to get a much better performance?
It says in itunes, new versions are available to download like 4.2/4.3.3 and 4.3.5
The thing is i'm wanting to make this phone get much better performance on speed,
On loading items, downloading and power efficient compared to what i was getting
Right now with the current version ios.4.1 that i have..
Can someone please advice me what would be the best IOS format
For my iphone 3gs 4.1 to get much better performance than what i used to have..
Or do i stick to this old standard version because it best suits iphone 3gs black 16gb modem firmware 06.15.00??
    Guys need help on this..

Ios 5 on 3gs? I've read on forums that many users wanting to downgrade from ios 5 to their basic ios
Specially on 3gs because it doesnt pretty much suit 3gs phone itself, some get delay or sluggish. And they say it drains so much battery power
So how can it be efficient or get new features but sluggish...
I just need the basics, you know probably surf a alittle bit faster, if possibly get a little faster IOS for opening apps, maybe a little bit speed on typing..
Most impotartly,it should not affect my battery life or maybe not much or better yet get power efficient than the old version..
My friend told me 4.3.5 works fine for 3gs, a littlebit speed
Opening app & browsing and typing speed.. But barely last 6 straight hour of usage, just surfing the net no 3g.. No notication whatsoever.. No emails too.. Just for web search, and call and tx...
Well, i'll just gonna rely on asking others about what they think is best for 3gs..
This phone is important so changing it to the new ones like the powerful 4s was never an option..
I just need this phone to just get a little bit of intelligent..
    Influence me guys pls.

  • HT4623 what's the highest version of operating system that the 3gs can support?

I'd like to update my iphone 3gs, what's the latest ios version it can handle?

Thanks! I did a bit more investigating after posting and found the answer, appreciate your response though. Should I anticipate any issues? I'm using more as an itouch now since I've purchased the 4s as my primary phone. The 3gs was getting terribly sluggish. I hope this doesn't make it even worse.
