3GS stuck in headset mode (no ringtone & sounds)

Hi,
at first: I never jailbreaked my phone and i take a lot of care of my device.
But today i made two calls and i didn't hear the called persons.
Then i tried to raise the volume with the volume buttons but it was at full volume showing:
Volume (headset)
I never use a headset, but now i know my phone thinks a headset is attached and deactivates the internal speaker.
I searched for the original iphone headphones and plugged them in and out, but still stuck in headset mode. Rebooted several times and controlled the headphone jack for dirt inside, but problem still persists.
Now i powered down the 3GS an waited for an hour and after reboot the headset mode is gone and internal speaker is working again immediately.
My questions:
- Why did this happen?
- Is it a known hardware bug? If so, will it happen again, so i should take it better to warranty repair?
br Pappl

One cause of this is lint stuck in the headphone jack causing a short. Plugging the headphones in and out merely pushes the lint further down. Next time this happens(hopefully it won't happen again), try cleaning the headphone jack with compressed air first. There is no bug regarding this, and most likely won't happen again.

  • IPhone still stuck in headset mode? Try this.

So your iPhone is stuck in headset mode. No sound from earhole speaker, no sound from external speaker unles you use speaker mode during a call. When you change volume, the volume icon says ringer(headphones) even though no headphones are plugged in. Every time you plug in your headphones, the ipod function starts playing songs, and stops when you unplug.
You've tried cleaning the jack. You've looked at previous posts in this forum, and at the knowledgebase.

None of these suggestions have helped, and you don't want to hard reset your phone. This is what i think worked for me.
    1. Plug in headset when iPhone is locked.
    2. Hold down the power button so that the "slide to power off" bar appears.
    3. Remove the headphones.
    4. Push the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the screen.
    5. Go to the phonepad and see if pressing the buttons now produces sound.
(It's possible that I've forgotten something that I did, so the next time my phone locks, I'll try the same method again and update this post. Unless someone else is having the problem and wants to verify.)

The root cause is either the presence of lint/dust in the switch or the inadequate resilience of the spring.
Nod, that's the cause of a similar problem, and cleaning the jack tends to help. My problem is a software problem, though, so cleaning and repeatedly inserting the headphones won't help.
With the problem I have, the iphone responds to the headphones being inserted or removed, so it knows they're there (or not there) but it fails to switch the speaker output.

  • Samsung Trance stuck in headset mode

My Samsung trance has no sound when I don't have headphones plugged in and when I open a text message, it automatically initiates an outgoing call to the message sender.

        Hi candace_marie18.
I'm sorry to learn your Samsung Trance is having issues with being stuck in headset mode, as well as it placing calls automatically to people when you open your texts. Let's see what we can do. How long have you had your phone? When did this start happening? Has it been dropped or exposed to liquid at all? You can try removing battery for 30 seconds and restart to see if it fixes issues. Otherwise, as archeryhunter1993 mentioned, you can try a Master Reset.
    * From the main screen, press OK to choose Menu.
    * Select Settings & Tools then press OK.
    * Select Phone Settings then press OK.
    * Select Security then press OK.
    * Enter the Phone Lock Code (default is the last 4 digits of the phone number) then press OK.
    * Select Restore Phone then press OK.
    * Select Yes then press OK.
    * Press OK.
    * Enter the handset lock code (default is the last 4 digits of the phone number) then press OK.
I trust this information is helpful.

  • Iphone 3gs stuck in recovery mode, will not restore or update error 36

As the title states, I have a 3gs stuck in recovery mode.  Sort of worked earlier today, been having trouble with the battery draining fast/not holding charge goes into recovery mode on its own at times.  Have been able to force it out of recovery in the past but now it is just showing a USB cable going into an iTunes logo.  I can't get it to restore/update and before it got stuck it would not update or restore either.  Before you ask, I have no idea what iOS I have, this **** thing didn't start messing up until I plugged it into my computer.

Update:  I have uninstalled and re-downloaded iTunes, Tried with a different computer, tried with a different iTunes account.  None of these did anything for me.  I have no idea what to do next, nearest apple store is more than an hour away.

  • Ipad mini (1st. gen)  stuck in headset mode

AFTER UPDATING TO IOS 8 NOW BOTH OF MY MINI IPADS (1ST GEN) ARE STUCK ON HEADSET MODE... HELP!!!!!

I had the exact same problem with my iPhone a few months ago. I was in the middle of an update and it told me to connect to iTunes while it was already connected, but then stayed frozen. I tried restoring, removing the sim card, reinstalling iTunes, using a different computer, everything. Unfortunately you'll probably have to take it to the Apple store like I did. They wiped out my phone and fixed the problem in about 2 seconds, but they did it in the back room so I have no idea what they actually did. Probably worked their Mac Genius magic or something. Sorry :\

  • N97 stuck in headset mode

I connected my phone up to my stereo via the headphone jack. And when I unplugged it, it didn't register this. Now it's stuck in headset mode with the little headphone icon in the top right. I can't answer any calls as it sends it through to the headphones and I can't bluetooth music to my car either.
I have tried switching off and then on again, and tried connecting the headphones that came with it in the hope that when I unplugged them it would fix itself. On a separate issue I can't connect it to my pc so I can't back anything up, to do a hard re-set.
    Any suggestions?

Mine is doing exactly the same thing.
The only way for me to get rid of the headphones mode is to turn it off and turn it back on again then when it asks 'Select accessory', I press 'Cancel'. And even tho it is not yet in headphone mode if I try to put on the FM Transmitter it says 'Unable to activate FM transmitter while enhancement is connected'.
Since nobody replied to my thread I am just hanging out till the firmware v12.0.024 update is available before I take it back to the store.

  • E61 stuck in headset mode

My boss's E61 is stuck in headset mode (happened during a call when no headset was plugged in). I've tried toggling every option on and off but it is still there. I've plugged in and out headsets but this mode is still stuck.
This set is still using 1.x firmware.
Do you think it is hardware problem (connectors short circuited internally) or a software bug?

    Hi wiilstay
If you back up all data first, you could always try updating the software using NSU which will return everything to factory settings. This will eliminate any possible software
    problem!

  • IPhone 3gs stuck in recovery mode, firmware iO 5

My iPhone is stuck in recovery mode. I have a 3gs, firmware 5.0.
Before I tried to restore it, my iPhone would randomly shut off, turn back on, and display a notification that said "Activation Required." Now, sometimes my phone would shut off again and return to it's previous working state. However, this time it did not. I put the phone into recovery mode and tried restoring it on my Acer Aspire 1 with Windows 7. iTunes put the phone through the various stages of restoration; Extracting Software, Preparing iPhone for Restore, Restoring Software, Verifying Restore, Restoring Firmware. After all of this, a nice little error message pops up that reads, "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (1)."
After this little mishap occured four more times, I decided to click "More Information," and was promptly brought to the help page set up here. I proceeded to troubleshoot by updating to the latest version of iTunes, updating my security, restarting my computer, and so forth until all the necessary precautions were performed. Now it was back to iTunes to try my luck at getting my life back.
To my delight, I found that this time the restoration process took upwards of forty minutes to complete. However, to my despair, a nice little error message popped up that read, "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (-1)." Ah, a different error message! i thought, feeling as if there was hope in fixing my phone. I clicked "More Information" and skimmed through the specific error messages, looking for that lucky -1. Nothing.
I need help. I have attempted to restore my phone a dozen times since this occurence, and I'm growing tired of going through the same process over and over and getting the same result. My phone is stuck in recovery mode now. I've tried restoring the phone on 2 different computers, to find out if, in fact, the problem was my iPhone and not my computer.
Some important information you may need to know in order to help me solve my problem:
    iPhone 3gs
    Running iOS 5.0
    Using iTunes 10.5
On an Acer Aspire One Netbook
    Running Windows 7
All security updates installed as of November 7, 2011
Also iTunes 10.5 on Acer Aspire 57354774 laptop
    Running Windows 7
Reply ASAP with a solution please!

  • IPhone 3GS stuck in recovery mode while updating to iOS 6.1

Hello there, I was updating my iPhone 3GS(New Bootrom) from iOS6.0 to iOS 6.1. While it was updating, iTunes suddenly ends up saying error and now my iPhone is stuck in recovery mode loop. I've tried DFU mode on my iPhone and try to kick it out by using TinyUmbrella but the computer doesn't reconize it. And when it was on recovery, iTunes doesn't reconize too, a window pops up and says i have to install 'Apple Mobile Device'. I've re-install and install iTunes a couple of times and nothing is working. Switching on and off the iPhone doesn't work too. Please, someone help me with this problem! I really do not know what to do! Please reply this As Soon As Possible!

Ok. I have spent the last 8 hours researching this problem and have the absolute 110% answer to everyone's problem with this issue.
Error 13 and 14 : Are checksum problems with the firmware image that is in the update package.
The update package is a .ipsw (IPod or IPhone SoftWare). This file is actually just a .zip renamed .ipsw.
The error is caused by a failure to download a crc-free version of the file. Not really sure why there are so many crc problems with the iphone updates, but Apple does not check the integrity of the update package before wiping your current version of IPhone software and that is why all IPhones that start an update with a bad update package end up in recovery mode. These errors are NOT related to the iTunes installation, antivirus software, or firewalls.
Recommendation : use a program like "Object Fix" (Freeware) to verify the integrity of the file prior to commencing with any new updates. You will have to keep trying to download it until you get a error free file. Once you have a CRC error free file this problem will go away. (I thought TCP/IP helped get rid of CRC errors.)
I had another problem and that was...
Error 1603 and 1604 : These are USB driver connectivity problems.
Recommendation : FULLY uninstall and re-install itunes software as stated in the Apple support documentation. Be sure to reboot between each step and these problems should clear themselves up. In addition, firewalls and anti-virus software may cause these errors as well.
Finally, shame on apple for not properly documenting their software so that end users do not have to decrypt their error messages with no true support to solve the issues. These are problems that enough people have had that there should be specific documentation on these problems.

  • 3GS stuck in recovery mode

I bought 16G 3GS last week. This morning I tried to update from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Phone is now stuck in recovery mode. I followed all the steps to fix it, diff PC, USB port, uninstall etc It still wont get out of recovery mode or update. Its now useless. Is anyone able to help me please? Tried calling Apple, HA! No one there

Hi Jim, thanks for your response. I have tried this. But the only thing the phone will display is the usb cable and the itunes icon, i hold down the off button etc, no slide comes up but it does turn off, when it restarts it goes straight to the usb & itunes icon again. Ive also tried holding down the home key and power button, it turns off, back on again, the apple comes up, I release them, and it goes back to the usb and itunes icon again. I followed all the steps in the apple (so called help) files, nothing. Cant even talk to anyone at apple, no online help available except from nice users like yourself. VERY slack Apple. I dont know what else to do. Are iPhones CRAP or am I just unlucky? Ive spent 6 hours following there crappy steps. Im goin nuts. Multi billion dollar companies screwin the little guy again! Any other suggestions I will try also. Thanks again for your response, anything else I can do? or maybe I am stuck with a paperweight too.

  • 3GS stuck in recovery mode after iOS 5 update

I just updated my iTunes to the latests update on my Dell. That wasn't the problem though. When i updated my 3gs, it got stuck in recovery mode and gave me an error code -1. No clue what this means and I desperately need help to get this fixed ASAP.

Mine did that as well, so I finally unplugged from computer. Then plugged back in and iTunes said it had discovered an iPhone in recovery mode did I want to restore from backup. I of course chose yes and it restored then updated right to iOS5. Hope it works for you like it did me.

  • Ringer stuck in headset mode

I've tried inserting and removing a headset, but it didn't fix the problem. I have never used a headset on this phone, so not sure how it got into headset mode. Any suggestions?

My husband's 4S just had the same issue.  I used a can of compressed air that I use for cleaning keyboards.  I gave it 3 shots of air and his sounds and ringer are back.

  • HT201263 iphone 3gs stuck in activation mode. Please help

Help! My old iphone 3gs is stuck in activation mode.  I contacted at&t to get the phone unlocked for sale.  I was told by representative during a chat session that the phone would become unlocked once I did a backup and restore with itunes on my computer.  I did this, then the phone was stuck in recovery mode.  Through itunes I got the phone out of recovery mode, now it is stuck in activation mode.  Any ideas?  The phone has never been jailbroken or unlocked in the past.  Please help.

Here's a troubleshooting guide for activation issues:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3424
If nothing works, try another computer, if still does not work, your iPhone may have a hardware failure.
