3GS switching itself off

Hi everybody,
I am having a problem with my 3GS where it keeps turning itself off. I have read a few other topics on this subject and know that a few other people have had the same problem and that it seems to be a hardware fault.
My question is, I am in the UK on O2 and wanted to know if it is best to go back to the O2 shop or the Apple store? I am worried that if I take it back to O2, they will send it off to repair and I will get back the same phone, with the same fault, plus lots of scratches to the case.
I have heard other people say that they took it into the Apple store and got it changed there and then. Is there much truth in this?
Thanks for any advice.

when you sync your iPhone with iTunes, it first automatically runs a backup and creates a backup:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Then it syncs the iPhone with iTunes, which handles music, videos, apps, etc.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
once you sync it (which they recommend doing before going), take it to the Apple Store, and if they replace your iPhone, all you'll need to do is bring it home, restore from the backup you previously made, and sync your phone. It's basically a two step process that can take an hour or so depending on how much stuff you have on the iPhone, but is relatively painless.
hope that helps!

  • My 3gs keeps switching itself off and when i turn it on, the date is set to 1st January 1970

I Have an Iphone 3gs that keeps switching itself off and when i turn it on, the date is set to 1st January 1970 :S   ... many software resets and updates won't do any good .. repaired at the manufacturer twice for the same, and works till it happens again on it's own. When it was repaired, the fix was mentioned as a reset done for the device. I have a friend who is alse havng same issue.
can someone tell what is the reset that can be done to tr and do it from my end plzzz?

Sounds like the battery is dead.  Bu try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iPOd
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem your battery is very likely dead.  An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ive had my iphone 4s since 10th april and on three seperate occassions its switched itself off completely (whilst having battery) it then wont work for around 2 days, this is very annoying and I dont know what to do as its been out for around 12hours now

I don't know why my phone keeps switching itself off, I've never dropped it, had water damage nor any other damage to it. Ive had it for around 5 months or so now and it just likes to switch itself off for around 30-40 hours then work again as though nothing happened. Although this is great as it will eventually work its  very frustrating not knowing if it will switch on again.. at the minute my phone hasnt worked for about 10-12 hours. I went in to the apple shop and they said they couldnt see me for over a week as they were fully booked, I understand that theyre busy but surely they can't expect me to go without a phone/alarm/email for that time when I am paying for it. Does anyone have any help/advice they can offer? Thanks

    Standard troubleshooting...
    1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
    2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    3. Remove apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Swipe up on the app preview card
    - Press the home button when done.
    4. If still a problem restore with your backup.
    5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
    6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

  • ICloud drive keeps switching itself off on my iPad 2

I have a MBP and an iMac = both on Yosemite and both working with iCloud drive OK.
But I cannot get this to work on iPad 2 with IOS 8 - with either Pages or Keynote.  It keeps telling me to set up iCloud - which I do as per instructions - but it sends me round in the same circles!
This is driving me crazy and has wasted hours!  I have signed in and out of iCloud several times and enabled iCloud Drive.  Then also down to Pages app and checked on for 'use iCloud'  Somehow - this switches itself off again after a few seconds!  How does this happen?
Why does it not stay on????????
While it is 'on' - Every time I try to use the Pages app I cannot see my iCloud drive documents - and when I try and save it then tells me to set up iCloud!
This is useless to me if it will not work as advertised!

I suggest that you do a update or reinstall of the phone software via the Update Service program. www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice
Hopefully will that solve your problem.
If you get the option to update I suggest that you select to update and also factory reset the phone.
If you only get the option to reinstall you already have the latest version, this will automatically result in a master reset too.

  • My iphone4 switches itself off and wont switch back on until its plugged into the mains

Hi there, can someone help me please!?
My iphone4 white had updated ios 4.3.3 and it randomly switches itself off, has anyone else had the same problem?
It just goes to black screen and I cant manually switch it back on, only when I connect it to the mains does it come back on.
What's also really strange is that once its reset from the mains it resets the date to 01/01/1970 and the time to 01:05?
Hopefully someone out there can help!? Mark

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

  • My iPad switches itself off when I'm on the Internet help

When I'm using my iPad on the net it switches itself off and I'm having to turn it back on again and out in my password I only want to use it properly

    Hi Lisah,
It sounds like you may have some corrupted files in the operating system -- when built-in apps and features like Camera and Siri malfunction, corrupted files are often the culprit.  There are a few things you can do to fix this -- first thing I'd recommend would be to back up your device to make sure you have all of your current data and settings saved.  Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
After backing up your data, try resetting all settings in Settings > General > Reset.  Try the camera and charger again to see if you still see the same strange behavior.  If so, there's likely a corrupted file in the iOS installation.  It's pretty easy to reinstall the operating system files to fix this -- you will need a computer with internet access.  Follow the steps in Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support to completely reinstall the iOS files and get a fresh, clean installation.
After using iTunes to restore the phone, go through the setup assistant on the phone and choose the option to Set up as a new iPhone.  Set it up as new and test the camera again -- if it works this time, that's a good sign!  After making sure it works properly, you can restore from the backup that created before doing all of the resets and restores.  This will bring your content and settings back to the phone.
    Good luck!

  • 6500 slide keeps switching itself off

Just got my shiny new 6500 slide which keeps switching itself off. The only way of switching it back on when this happens it to take the battery out, put it back in and then press the power button. It happens about once or twice a day and it seems to be when the phone is charging.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way of resetting the phone to prevent this happening?
I'd really like to fix it without the hassle of going back to the shop and trying to demonstrate a very unpredictable fault.

I would definately take your phone back and get it replaced. I had problems with my 6500 slide, every time i turned it on & off i would have to resest the time & date. I purchased my phone from an internet retailer and they exchanged it for a new one, so far i have had no problems...

  • 7380 keeps switching itself off

My 7380 keeps switching itself off - sometimes when its not being touched, sometimes when the controls are touched. It then won't turn back on. Taking the sim card out and putting it back on sometimes works, and the phone will restart, but not all the time. Does anyone else have similar problems?

I've had repeated problems with my 7380 doing the same thing. I received my first 7380 on 26th April and it only switched on twice before refusing to switch on at all. Orange replaced this phone and I received my second 7380 on 28th April.
On 9th June my phone started switching itself off. The problem's getting increasingly worse and now it doesn't stay on for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. So far I have been able to switch it back on again without too many problems. Orange have promised another replacement which will arrive tomorrow, but I'm extremely disappointed. If the next phone fails then I too will be demanding that Nokia replace it with a different model.

  • My i phone 4 keeps switching itself off

Does anyone have an issue where the I-phone 4 just switches itself off, and the only way to get it running again is to connect to the charger and switch it on , it then comes up with a message to say the battery level is it 30% ?

I have the same issue! In fact I posted this exact question!!
    Hugh Grest wrote previously:
    Hi,
My iPhone 4s 16GB is giving me a lot of issues with its battery as of late. Once the battery level reaches below about 30% the phone randomly turns itself off -- even if the battery level didn't reach zero. When I try to turn it back on, it just shows the out of charge symbol on the screen. When I plug it in however it turns itself back on immediately and shows the battery level it turned itself off on. I can then unplug it and continue to use it until the battery level drops to zero or the issue happens again.
Both my mom and my sister have the same model iPhone as me and do not have this issue. What should I do? (It has already been restored).
    Additional info:
    - My Phone is about 23months old
    - Running iOS 6.1.3
    - This issue has been happening for about 3 months or more
EDIT: Just upgraded to iOS 7... didn't help. Infact it made it worse! The phone battery now drains quicker which means the issue happens sooner!
    This is so annoying!

  • My G5 keeps switching itself off

I switch it on and then after about 3-5 mins it switches itself off.
    What gives?
    Andy

Look at Applications>Console and check your System log to see if there are any notations about shutting down after exceeding maximum temperatures. You might also like to run Apple Hardware Test to see if there are any problems with your power supply unit. If you have the first G5 model, the Rev A, you can check the LEDs http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908.

  • My iphone has switched itself off and will not turn on

Help!!!!, My I phone has switched itself off for no apparent reason today and now refuses to switch back on again!, hit has been working fine and is less than a year old.

Reset the iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 20 seconds (maybe longer) until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.  Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.
