3GS will not backup due to corrupt backup

I PHONE 3GS , WINDOWS XP, ITUNES 10.2.2.
Hi, I am trying to backup my 3gs. I receive a error message saying i have a corrupt or not compatiable backup. I have deleted the previous backup through preferences and reinstalled itunes but i still cannot get a backup . Any ideas ??

Since you've deleted the sparse bundle associated with one Mac, then the other Mac's backups must be nearly filling the disk. Time Machine on one Mac will not delete old backups from a different Mac.
That leaves you with three unattractive alternatives:
Delete the other Mac's sparse bundle, too, so both can start fresh and on an equal footing.
Manually delete a lot of the other Mac's backups, via #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
Connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule and back one Mac up to it, instead of the TC's internal HD.
The third option may be best, depending on the size and use of the two Macs. They'll be contending for space, and if one is considerably larger than the other, and/or has more things added or changed, it's likely to take most of the available space.

  • Bought an album, but one song will not download due to "corrupt file".

I've tried closing out of iTunes.  I've shut down my mac.  I cannot get this flippin song downloaded, but the rest of the album downloaded fine.  What do I do now?

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • HT4759 IPhone will not backup

Iphone 4 will not backup to Icloud, just sits there

If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

Very easy. Make sure you have a fat battery charge, good Wifi, like at home- not a coffee shop! Go into Settings which is that box full of gears and the phone should be asking to update. You have Internet switched on, right? Tap the button and let it rip!
I've always updated by Wifi. Even installed iOS 6 that way on a 3GS. It's easy. Apple stuff does archival installs and reinstalls, meaning your files aren't disturbed. BUT! Set up that iCloud backup. Now. Don't tempt fate. I had my battered 3GS stolen last week and it was traumatic! iCloud restored98% of my data and the lost stuff is buried in iTunes; Nobody told me I could go to iCloud.com and check my backups. And I asked around Apple. But 4 and 5 iPhones are better and there's a manual backup button to get on the web and be sure it's all uploaded.
I prefer iCloud to iTunes, but two backups never hurt! And you need Tunes to offload and on load stuff.
Hope this helps. Ain't the Internet grand?

  • My mini ipad2 will not backup to cloud - not auto or manually and I have plenty of storage ??

my mini iPad 2 will not backup to iCloud storage ... Not auto or manually... I have a pard storage plan so I have plenty of room ... I get no messages except that backup could not be completed... Any suggestions anyone ?

Have you tried using another WiFi network? Or reset your router? Uplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again. Sometimes that can really work wonders.
You may also have a corrupt backup and deleting the current backup might help. I wouldn't delete the backup without backing up to iTunes first. If you don't use iTunes, that won't be an option, but it may come down to having to delete the backup anyway if nothing else will work.

  • Lost all my backups and TM will not backup.

I lost all my backups today. I have MacPro with data totalling about 900GB plus a laptop with 170GB on it backing up to a 1.5TB drive. There was about 2 months of backups so I had about 200 GB free on the TM drive. There is no issue with the laptop backup. All references from now are to the MacPro. I was using iMovie yesterday and converted a largish movie for speed adjustment. I noticed my available space on TM had dropped to about 100GB but didn't worry about it as I suspected there were some temp files or something from iMovie that were responsible and I would track them down later. Today I tried to convert a similar size movie and left it running while I was gone. When I came back TM said backup failed and TM widget said this......

    Starting standard backup

Backup Failed: unable to free 197.53 GB needed space
Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.
Stopping backupd to allow ejection of backup destination disk!
Now I only have the current backup and 1 earlier. I deleted from iMovie the offending movies and moved them to another unbacked up disc. I also removed all backups relating to the movies in TM.
TM now says I only have 76GB available and will not backup.
Get info on the TM disc says 76GB available. Get info on the Backups.backupdb folder says its size is 2.21TB!!!!!
Any suggestions? I guess I've lost all my older backups but is the current backup salvageable (and trustworthy) or should I move the laptop backup to another drive and start the TM disc from scratch for the MacPro? Can I then just move the laptop sparse image back to the TM disc and the laptop will pick up where it left off?
I will wear starting the MacPro backup from scratch if necessary but don't want to screw the laptop backup as it's my wife's and she's overseas.
Sorry for the long post but wanted to try to be clear.
I just tried to repair the disc in disc utility as suggested to someone in another post but it said error - could not unmount disc.

I lost all my backups today.
Doesn't sound like it... sounds like you simply can't back up any further. You can still enter Time Machine to restore files, right?
I have MacPro with data totalling about 900GB plus a laptop with 170GB on it backing up to a 1.5TB drive.
Well, there's your problem. Time Machine needs +at a minimum+ 2-3 times more space than what is being backed up. You say you have 1070 GB (about 1.04 TB) being backed up, but you've only given Time Machine 1.5 TB to work with. You need a backup drive that is at least 2-3 TB in size!
Also, if this is your only backup, you're making a huge mistake. You should always have a minimum of 2 backups. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for more information on backing up. You may also want to look at some of the user contributed tips at the top of the [Leopard Time Machine forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1227]. Those will all apply to Snow Leopard as well.
One other question: you say you're backing up two machines onto one drive. How are you doing this? Time Machine tends not to play well with others... meaning that, since it tries to use every bit of space on the backup drive, trying to use that drive for something else (including a second machine's backup) tends to result in problems. The exception is, I believe, if you have hooked it up to an AirPort base station and are using it like a Time Capsule, in which case Time Machine will expect to share the space with other backups.
I just tried to repair the disc in disc utility as suggested to someone in another post but it said error - could not unmount disc.
Was there a backup going on at the time? Was it connected to the computer you were running Disk Utility on, or to a different computer or a base station? You can't repair a drive that is in use or being accessed remotely. If all else fails, connect it to one of your machines and boot that machine from the Mac OS X install disk, then run Disk Utility from there.

  • Time Machine will not backup Time Capsule drive

I was filling up my time capsule so I bought a new 2GB drive for my backups. It is attached as an air disk on the Time Capsule as I also use it to backup other computers in the house.
My problem is that I am now using the HDD in the time capsule for my iTunes and iPhoto library, so that they can also be shared, but they are not being backed up by TM.
I have checked my excluded drives list and the Time Capsule drive isn't in there.
Any ideas/help/advice on how to get the time capsule backed up too?

Sorry, but Time Machine will not backup a network drive (i.e. TC's HDD or any USB HDD attached to the TC). It can backup TO a NAS such as TC or a USB HDD attached to the TC. You can transfer your music to another external HDD that is connected directly to a Leopard-loaded Mac and TM can backup that up to TC/HDD attached to a TC.

  • Time machine will not backup but does restore

My Time machine will not backup, but will restore from prior backups - the last made three months ago (end of January).  Can anyone help?  When trying to run a backup the screen shows:
Select Disc (which I have already done)
704 GB of 1 TB available
    Oldest backup: none
    A continuosly revolving progress bar
    "Preparing Backup"
Note that when I run Time Machine in order to restore, all backups prior to Jan 30th are there.

    Mickmannock wrote:
I followed the proceedure described to delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.  However I note that there are very many versions of this file in other locations.
There shouldn't be.  Delete any others.
Make sure the one you deleted was in your top-level /Library folder (not the Library folder inside your home folder).  If you got the right one, when you went back to the Time Machine Preferences window, it should not have shown your TM drive or anything else.
I am running Parallels 8 and windows 7 in a Virtual machine, but these do not appear to have created problems in the past - over two years now.
You probably should exclude the VM files from Time Machine backups.  That shouldn't be the cause of much of this problem, but may be a problem in the future.  The reason is, to OSX, a VM file is one huge file -- if anything at all is changed, TM considers the whole thing changed, and will back it up again, taking time and lots of space on your backup disk.
Have you Verified your internal HD, and Repaired any other disks being backed-up, and your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting?
What are you backing-up to (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?

  • IPhone will not backup or delete Photo stream

So, this all started because I was trying to update my phone with to the iOS 7.1.2 but I wanted backup my phone to iTunes first. It would give me an error that it could not backup because of some unknown error. I thought maybe it was my pictures. I had over 5,000 pics from over the years. So I copied all of the pics to my computer then deleted them off my phone. Then I noticed that my photo stream still had pictures. I turned photo stream off in my settings and it asked me if I wanted to deleted all. I clicked delete. The pictures are still in My Photo Stream album on my phone and now I cant even access the album to manually delete them. It force closes every time I click on the Photo Stream album. All I really want to do is back up my phone. I have the iPhone 5S 32GB. It will not backup to the cloud either. I have tried to reset the lockdown folder, deleted all previous backups on my computer, deleted all photo stream pics on my computer and other devices.  Let me know if there are any solutions other than restoring my phone to factory settings.

I have deleted all photo stream photos on my computer and other devices.
You only need to delete them in one place because they are only in one place.
The Photo Stream cache on your iPhone has not been cleared.
    Quit the Photos app.
Double tap Home then swipe up on all icons (to close them all).
    Then reset the iPhone.
Press & hold both Home & Power until you see the Apple logo (about 10 seconds).
Now go back to Settings > Photos and see if you can turn Photo Stream On then Off.

My iPhone 4S will not backup to iCloud. My husband has the iPhone 4 and has no proleg with backups. Any suggestions?

You need to have your phone plugged in and on wifi for automatic backups to take place.   Also, you must not be out of your 5GB free space on your iCloud account.
If it is hanging up, delete the existing backup and then try to start again.
