3rd & 4th monitors for fcp setup using an Imac?

I'd be quite interested to hear about other users who have managed to configure their workstation with 3 or 4 monitors using an Imac (or any mac that doesn't have expansion slots)
What additional hardware you have considered and/or purchased. What sort of additional demands on your system as a result of the expanded desktop?etc

  • Suggestion for a Video Monitor For FCP

I am looking for a video monitor to use with FCP. The Sony PVM-14L2 13" has been recommended. Is anyone familiar with this monitor or do you have a monitor which is working well for you that you would recommend.
    1) Should I be looking for anything key features not listed below?
    2) Will I need any other hook ups to make this work with my system?
(Right now I am using a JVC SR-VS30U Dual Deck. A firewire from the computer to the deck and component from the deck to to t.v. the deck also has s-video)
    3) When I move into High Definition will this monitor work?
Key Features of the Sony PVM-14L2 13"
    Variety of Input Options
The monitor accepts composite, S-video, component and RGB signals standard without options. Serial Digital signals can be viewed with the optional
(with audio) or BKM-120D (without embedded audio). Even
, Sony's version of Fire Wire can be displayed with the optional BKM-155DV board.
    Beam Current Feedback Feature
In studio environments, monitors tend to be left on for long periods. This practice leads to white-balance drift and unstable color reproduction. The Beam-Current Feedback circuit corrects for drift over long-term usage of the monitor.
    Professional Set-up Features
Calibrating monitors assures that each display is showing correct colors which will match any other correctly calibrated display. The PVM-14L2 has set-up functions like Blue-Gun, H/V Delay, and selectable color temperature for these critical calibrations.

Sounds like a great choice as long as the size works for you. A small truly high-res monitor is much more useful than a big impressive soft one for analysis monitoring.
    1) I don't think you need anything else unless the JVC thing doesn't work out. In that case you can try your camcorder, or a capture device such as ADS Pyro, Matrox MXO, or one of the Aja or Decklink cards. Depends...
    2) JVC SR-VS30U - I don't know, there are a lot of devices that won't simply pass FireWire through, including many or most DVD recorders. Your best bet is to try it and monitor it on whatever you have.
If you're on NTSC you'll have to pay attention to the black setup. Many consumer digital devices these days won't put in the 7.5IRE setup for North America.
That's OK as long as you aren't using it to do analog conversions. If you can get FCP bars through the thing and set the monitor up properly to them, you should be OK. I'm sure the monitor can be set to 0IRE in menus if need be.
    3) It won't show you an HD signal. If you're using the MXO it will give you a realtime SD downconvert to monitor. But that monitor won't display anything but NTSC and PAL. If it did I would probably say that 13" is too small.

  • External monitor for FCP

I am looking into purchasing an external monitor for my iMac. The primary use would be to monitor the output of what I am editing in FCP, rather than have it be a secondary monitor (for dual screen editing). Currently my setup is an old 13" tv connected through a canopus converter, but I would like to purchase a flat screen and I am trying to figure out if I need to buy a flatscreen TV or just a flatscreen computer monitor. Hopefully this makes some sense--let me know if I can get away with the monitor instead of a tv!!

    Kim -
What does the canopus converter offer for outs? Composite? Component? HDMI?
You are on the right track. How important is it for you to have the BEST, most 'true' picture to view?
I'm gonna hang out a few people here...
Some folks insist on running their audio thru crappy speakers just so they can make sure the audio sounds good on run of the mill TVs -- YET insist on having only the finest high quality broadcast adjustable with isolatable blue gun fancy production monitor to CC their media.
    I say hogwash! (kinda)
Yes, you want a production monitor (for a number of reasons) to best set your broadcast luma/chroma. But are you broadcasting? Don't get something fancy if all you have coming out of the canopus is composite... I'd worry about getting the finest product with what you have first. Then worry about a new mac with a professional video card with a professional product with a professional monitor (audio AND video) setup.
    Help?

  • External Monitor as Preview Monitor for FCP 7

    Hey guys,
I recently purchased a ViewSonic monitor for use with monitoring my output from FCP. I've hooked it up but it doesn't seem to be working.
The ViewSonic has DVI and VGA outputs. I can go straight to the Mac no problem through DVI, but that just gives me an extended desktop.
I have a Scan Converter that is plugged into firewire to the Mac, and then VGA to the Monitor. I thought it would be that simple, but I guess not???
If anyone has any insight it would be really appreciated! Thanks!

to preview from FCP you need an NTSC or PAL LCD or CRT colour monitor, not a computer monitor. You will need a digitising card for SDI or analogue output from the Mac: http://blackmagic-design.com/products/decklink/
or a camera or deck with Firewire if you need to use a Firewire connection.
The manual explains in detail how to set this up.

  • My wife and I share the same iTunes account.  How can I setup a separate account for her iPhone using my iMac?

My wife and I share the same iTunes account. How do I setup a separate account for her? Can I do it using my iMac?
    Thanks

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

  • Dual Displays Plus a Preview Monitor for FCP Supported?

Hello! I have the iMac 20" and do video editing. Beyond using a second display for an extended desktop, is it possible to have an additional monitor/TV for the preview while editing or for playback?
    Thanks!
iMac (early 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also Running Windows XP Pro SP2

Here is my own answer, check out the Matrox MXO, it is a great add-on for the iMacs.

  • Preview monitor for FCP

I have two 20" cinema displays powered by an ATI 1900 display card and would like to have a third monitor for preview. Can I put in another display card and route the realtime display to this card and monitor?
If this is possible what recommendation would you suggest
for a good single panel display card?
    Mac Pro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can add an ATI Radeon X1900 XT
    <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=22 0D662A&nplm=MA631Z%2FA>
    or NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=20 858E48&nplm=MA567Z%2FA>
ATI Radeon X1900 XTs have to go in slot one or two (covering slot three as well).
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GTs can go in any slot.
If you are going to use one 1900 and one 7300, put the 1900 in slot one, and the 7300 in slot four. Set the PCI-Express bus to x16 x1 x1 x8.
    If you use two 1900s, set the PCI-Express to x8 x8 x1 x8.

  • Create Photoshop CS4 graphics for FCP 7 use-- confusion

Still confused about creating graphics in Photoshop for import to FCP.
Been reading up on the fcp7 and cs4 changes regarding this.
Back in the day, one made larger PS files( 720x540) and scaled them down in Photoshop
to 720x480 BEFORE importing to FCP to use in a DV -NTSC sequence.
But with cs3/cs4 film/video new file template presets, do we still need to do this resizing/ change of pixel aspect ratio in PS?
Also, now with the PAR change from Adobe in cs4 and FCP adjusting their PAR,
do we need to change PARS in photoshop anymore, or on older (cs3) ps files?
Chris Meyer wrote a recent article titled "PAR for the Course" at
    http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/cmgkeyframes/story/par_for_thecourse/P2/
which mentions creating PS files at a totally different size:
" ...the preferred solution - create a Production Aperture square pixel image of
    720x534 (the new square pixel preset in CS4 - not 720x540). "
So00 does this mean ignore the photoshop template preset sizes and make 720x5334 masters to squeeze down pre fcp import?
It would be great to get this straightened out--
as you know, there is a lot of conflicting info out there!
Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to share.

    Thanks for posting the information.

  • External Monitor for Macbook Pro (Use for Audio)

    Hey
Well I have a Macbook Pro and am looking to get an extra monitor because I am an Audio Production major and need the space.
I'm looking for about 20-22 inch range and maybe one that swivels so it is horizontal or vertical.
Please let me know what you think.
    Thanks
    Ryan

Be very careful what you buy, and if at all possible test it with the computer before you buy it. A few times. These things just stop detecting external monitors for no reason sometimes, as well as just refusing to ever detect certain monitors.
Maybe someone here has a set-up that's working for them, that's your safest option.

  • Support for FCP 4.1 on iMac (Latest)

I have successfully loaded FCP 4.1 but when I go to start it it tells me "AGP graphics card" is missing. Do I have to upgrade FCP? I hope not as my pocket is empty just now.

The man in the apple store quite explicitly stated that my machine was the right one for FCP so heads are going to roll.
Just to check, did you tell him that you wanted to run Final Cut Pro 4? Or did you just ask about "Final Cut Pro" without specifying a version? I ask because your iMac will indeed run Final Cut Pro 5.1 or the new Final Cut Pro 6 (from Final Cut Studio 2), but FCP 5.0 and earlier are not supported on the Intel-based Macs at all. If you did indeed say FCP 4 when you asked, then you have a legitimate beef with the guy in the Store. But if you just asked about "Final Cut", then what he told you was correct, if not covering all possible cases.

  • HP DreamColor Monitor for FCP Color grading

Hello, apologies that I posted this question also on the beginners video forum.
I am about to get a new Mac Pro set up specifically for color grading as I am a cinematographer and need more control over small projects where there is no budget for color grading of images at professional post houses. My vendor suggests using the 24" HP DreamColor LP 2480zx monitor driven from a Black Magic Intensity Pro card using the HDMI output. I have read conflicting reports and read a huge amount on forums such as Creative Cow about this but still not convinced I can get full 30bit grading from a Mac OS X using this monitor. I am in Australia and most projects here are in PAL format in HD at 1080p25 or 50i. I use FCP 7.
    Any advice please?

are you saying I should look at Da Vinci Resolve to grade? Why?
It depends on whether you're a day-in and day-out business, and your preferred workflow. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. The Balckmagic-branded daVinci has a number of internal core processing advantages, a tracker that works, far superior color science, especially in secondary processing, but suffers from an old, "tape-to-tape" single-layer capability. However, it is truly "real-time", but that isn't as important to some.
The latest version of Resolve supports multiple-GPU processing on Mac, so the difference between the OSX offering and the much more expensive LInux may not be that great in actual performance. You can build a faster machine with more hardware.
The question... is it the software or controller that makes is (sic) so good? misses the point. Its a synergy of elements, just like good grading itself.

  • Setting up a second monitor for FCP

    Hi,
I'm editing on FCP 4 HD on an iMac G4. I'm about to start a new project which will have hours and hours of footage, so I'm going to need another monitor so I can have the Bins on one screen, so that I can see as much of the footage clips as possible.
I have a VGA cable and I just want to check that if I have another display, I'll be able to use it as a dual screen computer (ie like a pro editing setup) or will the new display just mirror what I have on my iMac. I really don't know how this works, so sorry if I sound naive!
    Thanks

well if the imac does have a place to plug a second monitor into. then yes you will be able to use it like you want. if it does mirror then just go into the display prefs and turn off mirroring. i didn't think those imacs had a VGA plug, but then i again i am not sure. so check that first.

  • Using MacBook Pro as a monitor for video camera using HDMI

I want to connect my Canon 70D to HDMI port on MacBook Pro so that I can use the MacBook Pro as a monitor while shooting video with the camera? AppleCare unable to provide a solution.  Is there a way to do this....and/or an app for that?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

  • 3 Monitors for FCP

I have ben searching for this answer and cannot find it so I will post here.
In my editing suite I have two side by side monitors but I want to ad a third just for the canvas playback. I used to work at a studio and we had the same set up but I don't know how it was done. We had the side by side monitors but we also had a widescreen tv monitor hooked up that payed whatever was in the canvas.
Anyone know how I would do that?
    Thanks!

I don't want to loose the canvas off my main editing monitor. The studio I worked in just had it set up so the monitor played the whatever was in the canvas on that monitor. It was nice to have the full size version there and it also was a nice preview to see what it would look like on a TV.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.
