3rd Gen 40GB iPod click-wheel is seen by windows, but not Mac

I just dusted off my old iPod after nearly a year of no use and coulfn't get it to be seen on my MacBook Air with iTunes 7.7. I tried it on my homebuilt PC running Win XP with iTunes 7.7 and it mounted just fine. I did a software update on it, plugged it in overnight to give it a full charge, then tried it on the Mac again. Still no dice. No crash or hang, just as if it didn't exist. But it (the Mac & iTunes)see my wife's and my iPhone just fine. I double-checked and it still shows up and works normally on the PC. I don't want to do a reset if I can avoid, as I have some music on the iPod that isn't on the Mac. It is on the PC, but, it's a hassle to get it across.

I have a similar problem. I have not used my iPod in a few years. I recently bought a mac. The iPod syncs fine on the windows, but is completely unrecognized by my MacBook Air. I had to buy a USB connector because my iPod had only a firewire cable. Perhaps that's the issue? Disk Utility doe not recognize it. ITunes does not recognize it. In disk mode the screen still reads "OK to disconnect" after I plug it in. Any ideas? (I followed the Rs on the Windows where it's working fine...)
I am abandoning my PC altogether and I am becoming addicted to podcasts. Getting this to work with my MacBook Air would satisfy my new addiction.
Thanks,
T

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iPod losing connection to computer

I have a 3rd Gen 40GB iPod that I have replaced the battery in (a long time ago) and it has been working fine for a long time. Recently, in the past month, I haven't been able to use my iPod because when I connect it to the computer via Firewire, the iPod loads and is mounted on the desktop, but then it disconnects itself from the computer. Thats followed by a "Device Removed Improperly" warning. If I fiddle around with the dock connector, I can get it to load again, but then the same thing happens.
Also, I cannot seem to get it to charge in my car anymore. If I fiddle around with the dock connector, it will start to charge then it will stop.
Does this sound like the dock connector issue?
Things I've tried - various firewire / USB2 ports and cables.
If it is a dock connector issue, is there a way to manually fix that by opening it up? Or must apple fix it?

having moved through the apple world of ipods and shuffles and phones and laptops, i have just found in moving my lovely 3rd gen (20?gb) ipod during our move. however i now have a macbook pro, and although my lovely 3rd gen ipod is playing and works, it is NOT syncing to my laptop. and i've discovered there are loads at itunes songs that i didn't back up and transfer through generations. so///
here's what happens (and i've done the reset of holding down the buttons until the apple appears).
nothing on my laptop. nothing. at all. but the ipod looks like it is receiving a charge... but it is not on seen on my desktop, not in itunes.
    help anyone? thanks.

  • When I click on "App Store", the loader gets stuck on "Contacting iTunes Store..." I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else.

I can click on the "iPod Click Wheel Games" and it works, but NOTHING else. Any suggestions?

I was having this problem. The settings on my wireless router was set to hide my IP address so it wouldn't connect. When I changed that, I connected no problem. While this is annoying since I don't want my IP address to be out there, I just switch my router when I need to connect to the App/iTunes Store. Hope this helps. It worked for me.

  • My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • 2nd gen shuffle seen by windows, but not by itunes on other computers

    Hi Everyone..
Im trying to help a friend out, I suspect his 2nd gen shuffle is hosed, but thought I'd confirm with others.
He's had itunes and this shuffle for a while.. worked ok.  Stored it for a year or so, and now found that when we plug it into his laptop, Windows XP will see it as a usb drive (and I can transfer files onto it as a flash drive), but itunes doesnt see it.
In mucking around with it for some time, I finally installed a fresh copy of Itunes over the existing one and when it restarted I was told the shuffle was in Recovery mode.. so I reset it from within itunes.  Upon restarting, itunes again doesnt see it.  I then downloaded the reset utility and tried that, again, doesnt see it.
I installed itunes on my win7 desktop, my wifes 1st gen ipod touch is seen a-ok, but my friends shuffle is not.. again, I can use it as a flash drive on the win7 computer, but itunes does nothing.
    Is the shuffle toast?
    thanks,
    cakes..

Not looking good if you ask me especially since the problem was persistent across two different PCs and the reset utility did not help.

  • Bug/Solution: iPod seen by Windows but not by iTunes

(apologies if this has already been reported)
So I had the problem where iPod would show up in Windows as a drive letter, but iTunes wouldn't see it at all. I had followed all the instructions in this article to no avail:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
And then I tried something which ended up working. This may be somewhat of an edge case scenario, but it's possible others may hit it:
My OS is installed on the D: drive, instead of normally on C:. Also, there was nothing assigned to C:. So when the iPod was plugged in, Windows gave it C:. As I said, iTunes would not recognize the device at all.
On a whim, I reassigned some other USB device to C: so that the iPod would be forced to a different drive letter (I think it was G). Lo and behold, iTunes recognized the iPod just fine.
I didn't do any other testing on it, but it seems if iPod's drive letter < OS letter, iTunes won't see it(?)
Anyway, hope this helps someone else.<br>
    30gb   Windows XP

Thanks a lot, I must have spent close to 15 hours trying to figure out why my ipod didn't work with my re-installed windows. It turned out my windows was on drive H:, and the ipod was being mounted to drive C:. I switched the ipod to drive I:, and it finally worked! The following instructions may help if your computer sees your ipod in windows explorer (My computer) but not in iTunes, and the ipod is mounted on a drive letter lower than the operating system.
To switch your Ipod to a different drive letter:
    1. Connect your ipod to the desired usb 2.0 port.
    2. Go to the start menu and click "Control Panel".
    3. If you are in "Category view" (check the upper left where it says "Switch to classic view") switch to classic view.
    4. Double-Click "administrative tools".
    5. Double-Click "computer management".
    6. Under "storage" on the left, click "Disk Management", and wait for it to connect to the logical disk managament service.
    7. Your Ipod should show up in "volume" column; RIGHT click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." from the pop-up menu.
    8. Click on the "Change..." button.
    9. Select a different drive letter from the pull down menu. (Pick a drive letter higher than the one your operating system .ie Windows XP.. is installed on. For example if Windows is on drive D:, then pick a drive letter E: or higher.)
    10. Click "Ok"
    11. Click "Yes"
    12. Restart the computer, and see if your Ipod will connect to iTunes!

  • IPod is seen by Windows but not iTunes

Ever since upgrading to iTunes V7.x (currently the latest version 7.3) my iPod does not show up in iTunes. I can access the iPod from Windows and open folders etc. My iPod is connected via Firewire and has worked fine in all versions of iTunes until V7. I tried uninstalling iTunes several times and reinstalling V6, but the iPod does not appear in iTunes.
I've even tried using V6 to reset my iPod and then upgrade iTunes to V7, but I have the same problem.
Before I resort to reinstalling my Windows OS to get iTunes to recognize my iPod, I'd like to know if there is a way to troubleshoot the device from the Windows-side, since I can't use iTunes V7 to reset the device.
    I'm using a 15GB iPod
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • IPod is charging and recognised by windows, but not recognised by iTunes.

There was an error message but stupidly I did not read it, and it won't come up again. I've tried restarting my laptop, re-installing iTunes, restarting my iPod and all sorts.
The reason (I think) it stopped working was because I was trying to copy music from my iPod to my iTunes, and windows was not recognising it, so a friend suggested deleting and re installing the driver, which was successful. But when I then went on to iTunes, it came up with the error message saying something about the iPod no longer working with iTunes or something, and now won't recognise the iPod no matter what I seem to try.
Is there anything I can do without deleting all the music and resetting the iPod? Because the whole reason I was trying to do this was to back up the music so I could update to ios 5.1 or whatever it is, without losing all my music which I don't have on iTunes as it's a new laptop.
    Thank you.
    Ben x

    Try here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start with:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
It will not delete your library.

  • 40GB IPod Click Wheel Freezes iTunes When Connected - Please Help?!

I have only had my ipod 3 months and it was given to me as a present so the ipod thing is quite new to me.
Recently my ipod froze and after reseting as per instructions it showed a folder icon and apple support.com.
I turned the ipod back on after that to find all my music files gone, i tried connecting my ipod back to my lap top to download the music again but iTunes just freezes.
I have also placed my ipod in disk mode to completley restore it but i cannot do this if iTunes wont recoginze its there.
I am completely lost and gutted that after only 3 months i have lost faith in the ipod already and just listen to my music through my lap top at home now.
I left all my cd's back in england before i came to oz and have nothing to listen to in the car now.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks in advance

I guess nobody else has had this problem?
Does anybody know if you can e-mail apple direct to express how useless their services are or even to try to get an explanation from them of how to correct the problem before i throw their ipod in the bin?

  • IPod 40gig 4G seen in windows but not iTunes

So this ipod is a couple years old and has worked flawlessly. I've never had an issue with itunes until now. When I upgraded to version 7 I started seeing weird behavior. It would only find the ipod intermittently. Once it found it I restored it to factory settings with the newest update and it worked fine.
Then the newest update happened and suddenly I'm back to itunes not seeing the ipod. I've tired everything in the 5 step they tell you except reloading the ipod software. Which would be lovely to do but since its reintegrated in to itunes and itunes currently isn't finding the ipod... well you get the idea.
Sometimes iTunes will pause as if its finding it, but then wont find anything. Windows however has no issue finding the ipod regardless of if I have it plugged in with firewire or usb 2.
I've even reloaded my computer from scratch, and installed the newest itunes clean and still no difference. Again this didn't start happening until version 7 reared its ugly head.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • 3rd Generation 40GB iPod freezing when syncing

When I connect my 3rd Gen 40GB iPod to my computer everything goes fine (it starts charging, iTunes recognizes it). But then when it starts syncing my music, it freezes and makes this awful clicking, whurring, spinning sound and freezes both the iPod and iTunes.
Is there a way I can fix this or has my iPod finally just died??

Hard drive is going bad. Its lifetime is limited.

  • IPod Click Wheel Not Responding to Anything

I have the iPod click wheel 40 GB and it is not responding to anything. When I hit any of the buttons, an apple appears on the screen and then changes to a picture of an iPod with a sad face and an exclamation mark. This website also appears at the bottom. I have tried all of the five Rs and the iPod is not responding to anything. The battery will not even run out. What can I do?

try dropping it or hitting it. worked for me. i was about to buy a new one and i read a forum here that had many people posting that they just gave it a good whack and worked fine again.

  • Strange display when charging Gen. 4 Click-wheel iPod

This just began to happen. I'm original owner of my gen. 4 click-wheel iPod.
When I connect my iPod to my iMac to charge battery and update songs all works as usual until it is connected for an hour or so. They the display on the iPod shows a battery icon that looks as if it is 1/3 charged and a ! . What does the battery symbol and ! mean?
When I plug the ipod into a wall socket (Using the Apple connector and AC adapter that came with the ipod) it seems to charge just fine.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

I just had a power supply go dead on my iMac G5. See the thread here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1360445&tstart=0
I did also replace the internal back up battery inside myself. But once the Apple tech replaced the internal power supply (see above link) now my iPod charges just like new.
