3rd Gen Black Macbook Freezing...

Hey all,
I finally got my brand new black macbook and love it! The only problem is that I've been having it freeze up a lot. It seems to be in conjunction with internet programs because it has only happened with Firefox (only a couple times) and everytime with any Torrent client. I've tried Transmission, Azureus, Bit Torrent, Tomato. What usually happens is that everything is fine and then out of no where the pinwheel shows up and I can either force quit but still have the program registered in the dock and no other program will open, or not even be able to force quit causing me to need to Command-Ctrl-Power for a forced restart (even this hasn't worked everytime). My macbook is brand new and I've done the hardware tests that came with the OS X and also the one that came with APP. Any help is greatly appreciated because I want this to work better than a windows comp, but so far no luck!

Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps internet connection.

Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers  like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps.

  • My Black MacBook freezes

My Black MacBook freezes a lot. For example, it cannot install the Leopard DVD with all languages, it freezes before the end (mouse and keys does not work, even the progress bar stops moving), I had to install only English and HP printer drives to get it done.
It freezes when I try to restore the Time Machine backup (same as described above). I really do not know what to do.
I took it to an authorized support here in Brazil, but they changed the memory and the problem was not solved.
    Can anyone (please) help me?
It seems that the CPU is overheating, but the support said it is not...

I changed the logic board of my MacBook and it is working now.

  • 3rd Gen Lock Ups / Freezes during everyday use

My 3rd Gen Click Wheel iPod has developed a freeze issue, where I'll be playing a song and suddenly the ipod locks up and none of the controls respond.
To try and fix this I've restored the ipod, zero formatted the drive (disk utility says all is fine) and then put 2gb of music on it to test.
I still get the same issue arising pretty much every time I use it now. Luckily, more often and not the click wheel doesn't respond, but the buttons at least do and I can re-boot the ipod to get it to respond. When I get totally locked out, I have to wait until it goes into sleep of drains the battery.
Battery life is still good as this is a late 3rd gen model. What gives? This happens to songs encoded by the latest version of itunes as well as older versions. The software is up to date to correct 'bug fixes', but is there a way of forcing the ipod to upgrade its software in case the ipod software has become trashed?
    Any help/suggestions please.

Well no answers but looks like it could possibly be a disk fragmentation issue. Diskwarrior showed 77% fragmentation of the iPod. Once I set it to work, the iPod changes tracks much more quickly.
    Hopefully that's sorted it...

  • IPod Touch 3rd Gen 32GB Constantly Freezing

I've had my 32gb 3rd Gen ipod touch since Nov 2009 and for about five months now it's constantly freezing up.
It's random when it does it and will freeze up regardless of software updates or resets.
I'm running 4.3.5 and have wiped it clean numerous times using itunes but it still does it.
We have an iphone and ipod classic and have never had a problem with either of those.
    Can anyone assist?
I was thinking of taking back to apple via a store but other than charge the repair cost of £110.00 I've seen on the apple UK website what else could they do?
    Many thanks,
    Will

That what I fear, but as it started just out of the twelve month warranty and has become steadily worse until it's been practically unusable for the last three months it leaves a very bitter taste.
Only because I'm used to doing it I'm resetting back to factory settings as I type.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Reapply thermal paste? Last gen black MacBook fans running.

    Hi.
I have a black MacBook (MacBook4,1) that seems to get pretty hot sometimes. It happens even when I'm not running Illustrator, Aperture, or Photoshop. It can also happen when I visit a site without flash.
I had to replace the top case last year because someone poured water into the keyboard.
I'm thinking I may have ruptured or otherwise unseated the heatsinks, which may have displaced some of the thermal paste's contact with the heatsink. The computer was purchased in early 2008, so it's kind of old.
Would it benefit me to replace the thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink? How much of a pain is it to do that?

My computer is a bit older than yours and I have never seen that problem with this machine.
Have you checked Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) to see if any processes are using more than 30% of your CPU?

  • 1st gen Black MacBook - airport issues

I have a June 2006 Black MacBook that I recently upgraded to 10.5.6. Since then, I have had very poor airport connectivity. Where I once had excellent WiFi, I now have none. What the heck is going on?? I often must sit adjacent to the signal source in order to connect...even 10 feet of merely air space will cause my WiFi to fail. What's the point!

    HI,
Your Airport preference files might be corrupted as a result of the upgrade to 10.5.6.
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your MacBook. See if that makes a difference in the signal, of not...
Are you using an Airport Extreme Base Station? Airport Express? If so, try resettting.

  • HT1551 Apple TV 3rd gen black screen

    ATV 3 has black screen
Earlier today, I watched a show on Netfix and later did AirPlay from my MBP.  Ready to watch a show and now have a Black Screen.  Followed instructions to unplug and then plug back in after 5-seconds.  An Apple Logo appears for a few seconds then back to the Black Screen. Try holding down the Menu on the remote and the indicator light goes out then comes back on when I release.  Same with the Select button.  When pressing the Play/Pause button, the indictor on the ATV3 goes out and stays out.  Pressing the select button, the ATV3 indicator comes back on.
Unplugging for > 30-seconds, same systems.
Switching the TV to my S-Video input, I can see what my DVD player and the DVD that is in it.   Yes my TV is back on HDMI2 and that it is the correct port for the Apple TV 3.
    I give up for tonight.
iPad 2, iPhone 4, and MacBook Pro AirPlay are not working with the Apple TV.  I tried them also but what I really want is to watch Netflix.

You may need to grab a micro usb cable and restore in iTunes

  • IPad 3rd Gen - Black screen - HELP!

My elderly neighbour asked me to look at his iPad, as I work for myself fixing PC's, and obviously know all about iPads too!
The iPad is a 3rd generation 32Gb and it appeared not to be working with just a black screen.
I have had it on charge overnight although there were no indications on screen of it charging etc.
I attempted a reset by holding the 'Power' and 'Home' buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds.  The Apple log appears on screen and after around 25 seconds goes brighter.  However after less than 10 seconds of this brighter logo the Apple logo disappears and we are back to the black screen.  Nothing else appears on the screen.
I have tried connecting it to iTunes running on my PC,  It has never been attached to my PC before. The PC knows it is attached and I get the following message from iTunes:  "iTunes could not connect to the iPad "iPad" because it is locked with a passcode.  You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes." - I obviously can't do that as the screen is black.  Again, nothing appears on the iPad screen.  So I can't reset the iPad via iTunes or from its own internal menu.
I seem to remember that there is a way to do a 'factory reset' without iTunes, by using a combination of keys but I can't find reference to that now.
Any ideas?  Please??????  While I still have a little hair!  :-)

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has never been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
Since the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Can't pair Apple Tv 3rd gen to MacBook Pro

I just purchased an Apple TV and it won't pair with my MacBook Pro.
I use OSX 10.9 for the MBP and version 6.0.1 for the Apple TV so I believe all is up to date.
The problem is that my computer recognizes the signal from Apple TV but Apple TV keeps searching and the BlueTooth keyboard doesn't appear so I can't type the code to pair Apple TV with MBP.

    No, they simply did not.
Bluetooth on the ATV is for pairing a Bluetooth keyboard.  The Mac is not a Bluetooth keyboard, although it may use one.
Bluetooth can also be used by an iOS device to enable setting up the ATV on a Wi-Fi network, making the process a little simpler, this requires 6.0 or later on the ATV and iOS7 or later on the iOS device.
ATV's do not pair with computers.  They can share the iTunes library on a PC or MAC when the computer is powered on, iTunes is running, and HomeSharing is turned on.

  • Upgrading Black MacBook from 1st to 3rd gen?

    Hi guys!
I need some advice from you!
I've Got a Black MacBook (1st generation, CoreDuo 2 Ghz, HD 80 Gig, RAM 1.256 Gig), in 2 weeks the 1 year warranty will expire...
    a) should I buy the Apple Care Protection Plan to extend the warranty for 2 other years (that means 319 Eur, a little high price here in Italy)?
    b) should I trade my 1st gen Mac for the latest one (3rd gen, Black, CoreDuo2, HD 160 Gig, RAM 1 Gig, faster wi-fi and double layer DVD recorder): my Apple Store asks 460 Eur to make the deal...
    c) should I stay with my trusty 1st gen and not buy any warranty extension (maybe upgrading the HD to 160 Gig for about 120 Eur)? After all I never had any problem in this 1st year...
Any advice is appreciated: the temptation to make the jump to the new little jewel is very strong, but maybe it's better to wait for new models and upgraded OS X?
    Ciao!
    Sergio

Well, it's ultimately your choice what you do. You could...
    a. Purchase the Apple Care Protection extending your warranty another two years just in case something happens. I mean, that's all a warranty is, a little piece of mind for the just in case. You've done good so far (a whole year with NO issues), but there's always the unforseen issues.
    b. Trade up. The newer Macbooks are stocked with larger HDD, larger L2 cache (2mb vs 4mb), Superdrive capable of buring dual layer, and .16mhz faster than the previous models, and the new 802.11n wireless standard. Some people might say these improvements are worth the money, some don't. Again, totally up to you. If you like your MB, and have no issues, why rock the boat? But if you really want to rock the boat, dude - ROCK the boat! Go for the Macbook Pro. I would. But hey, that's just me.
    c. Buy a larger harddrive thus increasing your capacity. If you're gonna pop for a new HDD, get a HDD with fast RPM - something like 7200. I've even seen HDD with 10,000 RPMs! Not sure if they are compatible with the MB as I didn't research it in depth, but there's something to look at. Faster RPM HDD = faster access to the files stored on it.
So what does all this mean. Nothing. Because like I said earlier, it will ultimately be your own decision.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod Nano 3rd gen freezing/crashing on connect

    This is extremely frustrating.
My Nano (8gb, 3rd gen) recently started freezing whenever I connect it to the computer (iMac 20"). I have to reset it (lock on/off and depress menu/select simultaneously and hold for a few seconds).
I currently have iPod firmware (1.1.3) installed.
I was having no problems with it until recently - and here's what changed:
-I finally registered my iPod after being tired of seeing the screen pop up everytime I connected to iTunes.
-I upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (8.1).
Now, I don't know if either of these are coincidence or related to my crashing iPod... but it was interesting that I just registered the unit and started experiencing issues. Again, could be the iTunes software. Who knows. I surely don't.
I also noticed that the iPod (once reset and if not frozen) also will show connected only for a few seconds if iTunes is launched (suddenly the iPod shows on the desktop), indicates a sync is in progress, and then disconnects. Is this normal? This didn't do this before either.
I tried just about everything suggested on the forums to no avail (make sure you're not playing any tunes when connected, uncoil the cable, etc).
I know there are several posts on this issue, but I have yet to see one that resolves it adequately, or without having to sprinkle pixie dust and jump on one foot. I don't believe the cable has suddenly gone bad or is getting too many Gaussian rays from being coiled up. It's just too strange that this started happening when it did, when nothing else changed but what I stated.
Has this been fixed??? If not...
Apple - please fix it... *blowing out the candles*.

Hey- i was reading your post, after posting my problems. I had never had any probs w/ my iPod and not it's saying I have to restore to get my MacBook to recognize it. Here's the thing- I just did an iTunes upgrade also. Interesting... Did u find any "cure" for ur prob? If not, can I borrow some of that pixie dust? Please let me know what u did- I don't want to lose all my music!!!

  • 2008 MacBook freezing only when battery is attached

My 2008 black MacBook freezes when the battery is attached. If it is removed and ran on only AC power that machine works just fine. I have two of the exact same MacBooks (black, 2008) and have tried swapping batteries. According to system profiler they both are just fine. It seems to happen even if the machine isnt moved. The freezing is a hard freeze, that is, i cannot move my mouse or type and everything is just still. I have heard that some kind of ribbon wire could be the problem and people have said that putting a piece of paper on/around it can temporarily solve the problem. I am unsure of how to do this and am not even totally sure if this is whats wrong. Does anyone know of anywhere i can find good instructions for this? Will apple fix the problem? for free?
I have tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, both do not work. I have also erased the hard drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of snow leopard (i lost installation disc 2 of my original OS X cds, so apple told me to buy a new copy...over the phone that is). At any rate, the installation worked just fine and nothing has been installed or modified since. I really would like to fix this ASAP because I intend to give it to my girlfriend for our anniversary in a few days.
Please let me know if you have any input
    thanks
    Brandon

    First, try this:
    1. Shut down your MB
    2. Have ONLY the battery in it.
    3. Power your MB up & immediately take it into Safe Mode (after the startup chime, hold down one of the Shift keys until the login screens shows up. Let go of Shift. Log in. Let it finish booting. At the Desktop, do a few ordinary things on your MB (not all programs will function in SafeMode though).
    4. Report back here whether your MB freezes on battery-only power while it's in Safe Mode.
Second, download & install the iStat Menu utility.
After installing it, make notes of the MB's internal temperatures, particularly the 3 battery sensor temperatures when A) It's powered by only the adapter and then after a cooling down period, B) It's powered by only the battery.  The Battery Temperature reading in iStat should show right around 85-90 degrees.
Here's a screenshot of my own iStat, with the mouse arrow pointing at my MB's current battery temperature:
Also, need some answers to these Q's:
    1. What model is your MB?
Apple.com: "How to identify MacBook models"
EveryMac.com: "Lookup Mac Specs By Serial Number, Order, Model & EMC Number, Model ID"
    2. What version of OSX are you running in your MB?
    3. Did the frequency of the battery-only freezup problem develp slowly over time, freezing only every once in a while until now your MB freezes quite often, or did the problem just show up overnite -- yesterday, fine; today, freezing with only the battery in it?
    4. Did you do anything major as far as changes to your MB are concerned, or did anything happen to it? (dropped, keyboard spill, etc)
    This is an important one:
    5. If you were to start your Macbook up in the morning on battery only after it being shut down all night, and the MB is being used normally, how long in minutes does it take, on average, for the first freezeup to occur?
    6. When it is powered by battery only, and absolutely nothing has been done on it for quite a while after it's been turned on, & it's just sitting there with the screen open & the screensaver is running or the display is in sleep, does it freeze up?
    7. Compare the temperatures of the bottom of your MB between 15-20 minutes of Power Adapter only use, and 15-20 minutes of Battery only use, with a cooling down period in between the two tests. Is there a huge difference in the two temperatures, or not much difference?
    We'll get it.......
But I & other helpers who read your post just need more info from you before anyone can go any further with this.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't like my 3rd gen. iPod

Just got a new MacBook Pro (work-issue = no administrator password for me), which replaced a Titanium PowerBook. Tried to hook up and sync my 3rd gen. iPod for the first time, using the Firewire port of course. (Music library has already moved to new machine.)
The iPod doesn't seem to be seen by the MacBook Pro. It doesn't show up in the iTunes source list or on the desktop. The iPod goes into "Do Not Disconnect" mode, then it freezes.
I've seen other people posting with similar or same issues, but no resolution. What could be going on?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Update: I have discovered that if I connect the iPod to the Mac with the Firewire cable only, things work perfectly. If I connect thru the dock with the iPod sitting in it (like I was before), things go haywire.
So I guess the MacBook Pro likes my 3rd gen. iPod just fine. The iPod dock is what it doesn't like.
Weird. Thanks for all your thoughts.

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
