3rd Gen booting issues - board grinding

I have a barrage of booting issues.  After reconnecting the battery, I get apple logo> file/exclamation logo> then a loud clicking sound which can only be dampened by disconnecting the battery.  At first I though maybe it was the drive, but I still get the sound with the drive detatched.  I can reset fine, but will not go into diagnostics.  Also, no trace of mounting.
It was working fine until I went in to jiggle the display cable as I was getting intermittent display.  Maybe I f'ed up the logic board somehow?
Anyone out there slept with enough ipods to throw me a bone?

So,after using a firewire enabled PC to discover that my cord was okay and that my ports were not working not matter what was plugged in...I did something simple.I unplugged the iMac fr about 10 minutes. So,I guess all I needed was a Mac reset, either way it worked and maybe this will help someone later. Thanks to everyone who at least read the post;)!
Now I have to get back to my Halloween playlist.

  • HT1600 Apple TV 3rd Gen Netflix issues

We have recently purchased an apple TV 3rd gen and Netflix worked for about a week and has not since.  All updates are in.... can anyone suggest what needs to be done?  We bought it for Netflix and not any better than the WD or Boxee we tried....so far.

    Just found this:
    http://m.techcrunch.com/2013/09/22/apple-tv-6-0-update-pulled-after-users-report -bricking-other-issues/
I will consider myself lucky that it didn't update yet. I will just wait patiently till the bugs are worked out.

  • Ipod touch 3rd gen software issue????

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch which is currently on software version 4.2.1.
Everytime I try to download a new app it comes up on the ipod and on computer if trying to do it through that, that the the app "requires software version IOS 4.3" or this "app is incompatible with the ipod", i have gone through itunes to try and update software but it states that the current software 4.2.1 is the most recent. It also went through a backup stage and randomly restored the settings and i've lost everything.
It still wont give me an option to update the software therefore resulting in me not being able to install new apps
    All help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

It sounds like you actually have a 2nd gen iPod Touch. If so, the last iOS level that supportsit is 4.2.2.
What is the model number on the back of your iPod?
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • HT4972 ipod touch 3rd gen update issues

I have an ipod touch 3rd gen and i can not get it to update. when i try it goes through the motions of downloading the update and then after a little while it says error that it can not be updated... any thoughts on what to do?

Which version of iOS do you currently have on your iPod? I know the sign off for your discussion says iOS 4.3.3, but I don't know if you entered that information or it was automatically generated.
What capacity is your iPod - how many GB?

  • Ipod 3rd gen notes issue

Oh my gosh i cannot figure out how to put notes onto my iPod and you say that you do, could you possibly tell me how? There isn't even a notes section on my iTunes when i plug in my iPod.

  • HT1555 Apple TV (3rd Gen) Pairing issue

I have long since lost the original Apple TV remote that came in the box and finally got around to buying a new one. I attempted to read the instructions, but the instructions aren't clear or easy to read- everything is made short and sweet but doesn't provide the key points I need. How do I pair the new remote to the Apple TV when it's off and there is no access to the original remote?
    Someone help.

That is literally what the instructions said and it isn't doing jack squat... I don't have the gas money to get to an apple store to have someone there work on it themselves. I wish there was something as symple as the "Sync" button but, everyone has to make it more complicated, don't they?
Need I remind you the Apple TV it's self isn't even on- there's no way to turn it on without the remote.

  • Does 4.3.3 will give my 3rd gen iPod issues or it will be smooth as 3.1.3?

I want to update my iPod to 4.3.3 but I need to know if the multitasking and all other features will make my device slow or if will remain smooth as 3.1.3.

Other users have said it slowed down their iPods. Are you sure you have a 3G iPod?  If it is 8 or 16 Gb it is a 2G that can only go to 4.2.1. See:

  • Ipod 3rd Gen battery charge issue

I have various 3rd gen ipod's and logic boards. parts n pieces etc. here is my issue.... i recently purchased a new battery for 1 of these 3rd gen ipods to repair. when i first plugged everything in and connected usb cable ipod fired up no problems but the battery was not showing any charge. i even tested battery as it was charging with a multi meter. the voltage was slowly discharging. Now... i disconnected the battery and plugged it into a 2nd gen ipod mini and did the same thing. The battery showed a slow charge as tested with the meter. once the battery charged to full 3.7v i then put it back into the 3rd gen and powered it on only to the same effect with no battery charge indication and also a slow drain with the meter test. i've tried this on 3 or 4 different 3rd gen logic boards that i have and with the same results. I'm confused *** is goin on here. any replies please. thanks.

Just how its logic board is programmed I guess.
They make splitter cables which is a firewire and usb cable in 1, so if you have a wall charger you can charge and sync via USB at the same time.

  • Imessage and other Issues with 3rd Gen iPad

Hi there, just got a 3rd Gen iPad for the mrs and so far it's been great.
However, several rather annoying issues have developed and I can't seem to find the right trouble shooting for it, so I thought I'd try here.
    So here they are:
    iMessage & facetime don't work
Issue 1- Each time she uses her Apple ID log in for either feature a message "iMessage Activation: Could no sign in. Please check your network connection and try again". I've checked the network settings, I've reset them on the iPad and yet it seems to persist. Her appleID is valid as it works on her iPhone, which is using the same network/Wifi as the iPad, yet the iPad seems to decide it doesn't want to activate. I've signed in on my appleID and the same message seems to appear
Issue 2 - When using apps like Chrome a constant message will appear "Connect to iTunes to use push notifications" every time the app is open. This has been done, it's been backed up and it has connected to iTunes, yet these messages still pop up each time chrome is opened.

I also am having issues with my ipad mini as far as imessage . sometimes it works fine . Sometines I receive ok but it hangs on sending . i have tried everything . I think the apple server is a mess  Most times I can only send If i am replying to a message i received . If i try to start a message it hangs . No reason found

  • Cellular reconnectivity issues with 3rd Gen iPad 3G/4G/LTE

I've read a few other threads regarding a reconnection issue with the new (3rd Gen) iPad. I'm creating a discussion so people can put there thoughts here regarding the issues they are having with reconnection of cellular data connections.
I have AT&T 64B iPad Gen 3 with 4G/LTE. Black. Works just fine on wifi and my LTE screams at home and work. Faster than my cable at home. I have noticed something behavior regarding data connection when it's lost (like in a tunnel). I ride DC Metro to work and go through a few tunnels. Of course, my data connection drops in the tunnels. When I come back out the indicator on the iPad indicates 5 bars signal and LTE again. Problem is the data connection isn't there, no matter what app I try. I even get a popup window say my cellular data plan has not been activated (huh?). This isn't true since I am on, and have been using a plan. It does this whether it's 4G or LTE reconnection. Not sure about 3G because I haven't seen 3G icon popup on this iPad yet.
I'm thinking this may be an authentication issue? Else, why would it popup that warning? Anyway, all I do is is go into settings turn cellular data off and back on again and everything is fine.
I'm guessing that there could be a software fix for this in the future as there are quite a bunch of people having this problem with reconnection to cellular.
Please post your issues here in this discussion if you have this problem. Maybe we can figure something out.

I have the same iPad (3rd gen, 4G ATT, 64GB, Black).  When it arrived last Friday, everything seemed to work fine, except the cellular data connection.  It would constantly drop, and I had to toggle cellular data off and back on to get it back.  Also, I was getting really slow speeds (on cellular data only - wifi works fine).  I tried some simple fixes (restarting, resetting the network settings, restoring), but I kept having the problem.  I finally made an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they immediately gave me a new iPad, saying "it could be a bad antenna."  Here is the bad news.  Even with the replacement, the connection seems to drop less often, but it still drops. The part that concerns me most is that the data speeds on my iPad are considerably slower than on my iPhone 4S when I test them in the exact same spot (I use the Speed Test app).  So on my iphone, I get speeds around 3 Mbps, and on the iPad, I get speeds of less than 1Mbps.  I can't see any logical reason that the 3rd gen iPad would not get at least as good or better data speeds as an iPhone 4S.  The fact that I have now had two 3rd gen iPads with cellular data problems concerns me.  However, it is very hard to tell if this is a software, hardware, or network issue.  The fact that my iPhone is running the same update of iOS (5.1), and has no problems would seem to eliminate the software and network as causes, but I can't really be sure.  I am going to watch the posts in the support communities for another day or two and then head back to the Genius Bar.  Overall I love the new iPad, but this has been a real downer.

  • Safari issues, iPad 3rd gen iOS 5,1,1

Right, I bought an iPad 3rd gen and I've been having to reset it 2-3 times daily because of this issue.
When generally surfing the web, doesnt matter what sites it seems, safari just decides.
I'm not going to load the link you just clicked on :P
The site address changes, a small portion of the progress bar turns blue and nothing. It just freezes.
Nothing I've tried (clearing all caches etc) makes any difference, except a reset. Quite annoying.
I had no such issues on my iPad 2.
This issue doesnt appear to be limited to safari though. I've had problems with lovefilm and my speed test app as well so I'm guessing its a general wifi problem.
After safari froze I decided to check the speed of my connection. It didn't come back with a ping, I waited 10 mins still nothing.
At the same time my iPhone (4s) with the same app came back with a ping of  30ms and d/l speed of 15MB/s.
I'm now confused as to whether this is a software or hardware issue.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Swingflaps-
One thing you can try is to reset (reboot) your iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

  • IPod Touch (3rd Gen) won't boot unless usb powered

    Info:
iPod Touch (3rd Gen) 32 GB
    Latest Version available (5.1.1)
    Tried resetting settings
Tried hard reset (home button and power button at the same time until apple logo)
    Has a full charge
So basically any time I try to turn the iPod Touch on it will bring up a black screen for a second on the display, fail to boot up to the apple logo, and then shuts the display off.
I have done everything up to restoring it on iTunes as listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
The only problem is in the process of this occuring I have had a hard drive fail so my iPod Touch backups are more than likely lost without further analysis. So what would be the next best step? I assume refreshing it and backing up everything with a backup on my new hard drive under iTunes. Obviously, my computer would know anything about this iPod since I don't have its previous backups, but I should still be able to get the basics (music, videos, photos, etc) back thanks to default iCloud account right?
    Thank you for your time.
    Michael

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. Likely a bad battery

  • 3rd gen iPod touch lock button issues

Recently my 3rd gen iPod touch started giving me problems with the lock button.  If I press the lock button the screen will turn on and off rapidly and then the power off screen will come up.  It will just keep doing this over and over; I've tried to restore it but no luck there.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the switch needs to be replaced. You might try this until you get it serviced.

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iTunes Sync Issue

I have a 40GB 3rd Gen Click Wheel iPod that has functioned without a single issue since purchase in 2003. It has been a long while since I updated any of the music, so I plugged it into my computer using the firewire cable that it came with. The iPod will begin charging immediately, but when I open iTunes (latest 8.2 version) it will not recognize that there is an iPod connected. I've tried this on both my PC (XP) and my Powerbook (10.4) with the same results. I've tried the Menu/Play button reset, also putting it into Disk Mode. I would appreciate any info/suggestions, since I'm stuck with my playlist from 2005!

I'm having the same problem. Trying to use my old 3G 20 gig iPod to dedicate to my car stereo which has a usb port, supporting the iPod interface. Works fine via usb but wont charge. Is there an usb to firewire adapter so I can use my old firewire dock cable? Or is it a voltage issue? I hate when standards change. I understand that USB gives apple a greater potential market, but come on! The old stuff should still work!

  • 3rd Gen nano (RED) screen issue

I've just got my 3rd Gen nano (RED) but it seems that there is an issue with the backlight of the screen. Initially, when I tried to charge it with my MacBook with the USB cable, it didn't charge at all. I have to plug it into the power adapter to get it charging.
Also, I have to press the screen to get the backlight to "work" otherwise I can hardly make out what's on the screen.
What can this be? Also, is it a case of the iPod being fully drained of power? Please help! I'm getting this as a Christmas present for my girlfriend

To address the charging issue, make sure you are connecting the ipod to a high powered USB port (2.0) for it to properly charge on your computer. Often these ports are on the back of the computer, not on the front or the keyboard.
Yes, if your ipod is very low on battery charge the backlight will not come on.
Also, you should not have to touch the screen to turn on the backlight. In fact if it comes on when you touch the screen it is defective. It is only supposed to come on when you touch the clickwheel.
You should probably check to see what you have your backlight settings set to on the ipod. I have mine set to 10 seconds, so it comes on when I touch the click wheel and the light turns itself off after 10 seconds. If this is the behavior you see on your ipod, it is working fine. If you want to extend the time it stays on, you can set it to stay on longer under the settings. be advised the backlighting does use battery power, and your playlife may be affected by having the backlight on a lot.
