3rd gen ipod doesn't open itunes

The unit is recognized by the computer but it says the driver is corrupt or missing. The fix for that is supposed to be downloading the current version of itunes - which I am already running but I did this anyway. What should i do next??
The ipod works fine for listening and I usually charge it with a wall plug. I was trying to add music this time.

Don't know if it still helps for you, but I formatted my ipod.. First I deleted every itunes file from my pc, then installed Itunes 7.7.1 and then i formatted my ipod. I did loose all the files on my Ipod, but at least now Itunes reconizes it again.
Good luck!

  • 3rd gen iPod not seen by iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista

3rd gen iPod and iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista
Used to be flawless. I'd drop the iPod on the dock, Windows would
make that sound of a device attaching, my iPod would appear in iTunes
    and the updating would happen.
Then after going out of town for a weekend (for a funeral), I come back, and my iTunes doesn't see the iPod. I do all the things Apple support and this group has suggested in the past (uninstall/install/reformat iPod/clear registry). It works again! Hooray.
Last night, I plug in the iPod, and iTunes doesn't see the iPod---AGAIN.
I repeat the process above, but this time it doesn't work.
Now, I put the iPod on the dock, Windows beeps, the iPod displays "Do
not connect" but the iPod doesn't appear in iTunes. Eventually the
iPod display will change to a plain old charging display.
    Any ideas?

If you are connecting using USB (and it has the click-wheel ), it's probably a 4th gen iPod...
Not that it matters in this case. The most likely cause is the hard drive has become faulty. It may have worked when you reformatted the iPod the first time because any bad sectors were mapped out. If the drive has too many bad sectors (or has developed some other problems), reformatting will no longer work.
You can run some internal iPod tests using Diagnostic Mode. Use this handy guide to see how to put your iPod into this mode.

  • 3rd gen iPod doesn't transfer playlists

    Hi everyone,
3rd gen 20gb with 2.3 software hasn't been taking any of the playlists.
I too had the earlier problem where the "software too old" issue kept popping up, but that's apparently been resolved.
    I'm using 10.4 and itunes 6.01.
Can the 2.3 software support the Folders/Nested Folders in iTunes? I'm wondering if that could have anything to do with it, but at this point I'd rather confirm that with you guys rather than deleting or renaming a ton of playlists.
    Thanks as always.

You might want to try running diagnostics on your iPod.
To do this: reset the iPod. When the Apple logo appears, hold down the >>, << and center buttons until you hear a "squeak" followed by the Apple logo backwards.
Use the >> and << keys to choose HDD SCAN. That test will take 15 to 30 minutes. If more than an hour passes, it's likely your hard drive is dead.
If the test gives you a "HDD PASS", your hard drive is most likely okay. If it gives you a "HDD FAIL", your hard drive is dead.

  • 3rd gen Ipod doesn't mount

My 3rd Generation 40 gig Ipod will not mount on my G5 Power PC or in iTunes. My 40 gig 3rd generation will mount on my G4 Powerbook with the same system software and iTunes version 7.0.2 that is installed on my PowerPC G5. I have used disk utility, rebooted my Ipod and done everything but reinstall iTunes which I would rather not do for obvious reasons. Any help anyone?

All of this was great, but a first and very basic step, connectivity is missing from Apple's FAQs. After spending several hours following Apple's steps, my iPod still doesn't show up in the Finder, in iTunes or System Profiler. I have two 3rd generation fireWire cords, a PowerMac Dual 867 G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9. This problem started when when switched to iTunes 7.0.2. I never connected the iPod to iTunes 7.0.1 (which wasn't out all that long). I have two other FireWire appliances, external CD-RW and iSight camera. Both appear in theh System Profiler when I plug them in to the computer. The issue is connections. We should always start troubleshooting with a connection test. The iPod ReSets, but cannot be Restored. Why? No connectivity. It does recharge. If the system can sense the iPod enough to recharge, it should sense the iPod in the System Profiler using the FireWire search. Not much help, but a curious predicament for an iPod that is working perfectly fine. I just can't update my music.

I have a 3rd gen Ipod touch. When I connect it to my Macbook pro to sync it with itunes, it doesn't show up on iTunes. When I connect my iPhone 6 to my computer it syncs, backs up, ect. How do I make this older iPod show up on my iTunes?

    Hi ChristianHelpplz,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, but your iPhone 6 is working normally.
I recommend starting with these steps to troubleshoot your iPod touch and connection with your Mac:
    Check your USB connections
Unplug other USB devices from your Mac and try again.
    Try a different USB port.
    Try a different USB cable.
    Restart your device
Restart your iOS device or reset your iPod.
    Restart your Mac
Turn your Mac off and back on.
    Update your software
Check for software updates on your Mac.
    Check for an iTunes update.
    Check your security software
If you have security software installed, learn how to resolve issues between iTunes and your security software.
    From:
If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support
If you've tried these steps and your iPod touch is still not recognized, try placing it into Recovery Mode next:

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • IPod 3rd Gen 30gb wont sync with iTunes, but works fine and shows up in windows explorer

Hi, My sister-in-laws ipod classic 3rd gen ipod is being wierd. Therres a few problems. First and foremost when we plug it into her windows XP laptop and open the latest version of itunes, which we uninstalled and reinstalled the message "The software required for this ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes to install the required software." which we allready did. I also did everything in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US but when i selected the usbappl file as the driver it didnt reconize it as a driver. I also ran itunes dianostics and restarted the apple mobile device service and fixed all other issues. The ipod shows up fine in the windows explorer any help is appreciated.

That is a 4th gen iPod, and it should work with a USB port (or a FireWire port).
If you have not done a standard Restore on the iPod using iTunes, you may want to do that next.  The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  So, if the cause is related to software (or data corruption), and there is no hardware issue, a Restore should fix it.
WARNING:  The 4th gen iPod (when used on a USB port) will ask that you connect it to a USB power adapter as the last step in the Restore process.  These white square power adapters originally came with this model.  If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, you will not be able to complete the Restore, and the iPod will become non-functional.  So don't do it unless you have one.  A third-party power adapter may or may not work for this purpose.  The USB port on your computer does not work for this purpose.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't like my 3rd gen. iPod

Just got a new MacBook Pro (work-issue = no administrator password for me), which replaced a Titanium PowerBook. Tried to hook up and sync my 3rd gen. iPod for the first time, using the Firewire port of course. (Music library has already moved to new machine.)
The iPod doesn't seem to be seen by the MacBook Pro. It doesn't show up in the iTunes source list or on the desktop. The iPod goes into "Do Not Disconnect" mode, then it freezes.
I've seen other people posting with similar or same issues, but no resolution. What could be going on?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Update: I have discovered that if I connect the iPod to the Mac with the Firewire cable only, things work perfectly. If I connect thru the dock with the iPod sitting in it (like I was before), things go haywire.
So I guess the MacBook Pro likes my 3rd gen. iPod just fine. The iPod dock is what it doesn't like.
Weird. Thanks for all your thoughts.

  • Transferring iTunes store song to 3rd gen ipod

I just downloaded a song from the iTunes music store and then tried to transfer it to my husband's 3rd gen iPod. I received a message saying that I needed to d/l the newest iPod Updater software, which I installed. I received the same message when I tried to transfer the song again. I re-installed the software and received the same message again. I have purchased music from the iTunes music store and transferred it to this iPod in the past so I don't know what could be the problem. I would welcome any help anyone can offer. Thanks!

After installing the iPod software on your computer, open the most recent version of the iPod updater in your /Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater/ folder, and click the Update button when the iPod is connected to your machine. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update procedure.

  • I am unable to connect my 3rd gen iPod to my Windows 7 Laptop or iTunes

Once again, Apple support Communities creates a new question instead of letting me search within iPod touch for my own research.
For the past six months I have been unable to sync my iPod to iTunes.
The 3rd Gen iPod Touch will not connect to Windows 7 and not recognized by iTunes 11.1.1.11.
I have data/info on my iPod that I prefer not to compromise by doing a hard reset.
I have confirmed that my iPod nano does sync with iTunes on my Win7 Machine. So I'm pretty certain my cable is working ok.
I've heard that I can somehow sync via wifi, but I'm still not sure if that means I can backup my Notes, Contacts and other data without the use of applications like MS Office/Outlook etc.
Thankfully, or detrimentally, I've been able to go for the last few years without changing the 10k songs on my iPod touch. But over the last six months, I've finally started getting bored with the existing songs. Hence the need to solve the non-syncing issue. And I don't like going blindly forward without a backup. My battery and home button have become glitchy and I'm concerned I may lose the unit completely one day soon.
If anyone reading this has any experience with a similar issue, or could offer advice, workaround, or solution, I would be greatly appreciative. And I hope to assist others as I learn more through solving my Apple issues.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    The Ipod works fine.
Battery charges regularly with the occasional glitch.
    Running iTunes 11.1.1.11
I figured a Nano would probably connect in a simpler way than the touch, but only have a couple computers and cables to test.
I've reinstalled iTunes, but not the full suite, and not all traces. I will attempt this, but I suspect its related to my touch. I was able to connect other iphones to my itunes without issue, using the same cable.

Never mind, I think. I think I figured it out. There was 1 song (out of > 900!) that somehow had been purchased with the other ID - I have no idea how. Once I deleted that song, it stopped asking.
There may be something with the newest iTunes version too. I didn't think in older versions that the "On this iPod" list of songs was greyed out. But at least it syncs ok.

  • My 3rd gen ipod nano is not being read by itunes when I plug it into my mac laptop.  It says "no name" on the mac screen, I lost all my music on the ipod itself.

My 3rd gen iPod nano is not being read by my iTunes on my mac.  When going to sync, the mac screen says "no name". Also I believe I lost all the music on the iPod.  When turned on it says "Welcome" as if it is new.  I tried to copy all my music into the "no name" folder and then sync.  The iPod said it was "syncing".

So does iTunes see the iPod or not?  I couldn't quite understand from your post as you said it wasn't, but then said that the iPod was syncing...

  • Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?

Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?  I'm running iTunes on my MacBook with Mac OSX 10.6.8.  I've checked to make sure in iTunes that the Podcast Sync box is checked and it is.  I've tried checking communities and tried several suggestions and nothing seems to work for me.  Everything else syncs except Podcasts.  I can't figure it out. Any suggestions to get Podcasts syncing to my iPod Touch again?  Thanks!

One other step I've tried was removing and completely reinstalling the playlist to the iPod. That cleared up the problem for about two days.
