3rd gen ipod not connecting

Once again (after an itunes update) my ipod won't connect. Itunes doesn't load and I can't put new stuff on my ipod. Very annoying indeed. It was fixed the last time but since the newest software update there's been no news. Apple seem to be getting a bit slapdash. A FIX NOW PLEASE!

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router. Yes do this
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • 3rd gen iPod not recognized when using Firewire

The 3rd gen iPod only charges via FireWire. Given the lousy battery life provided by the device, I need to be able to sync using the Firewire port of my Macbook (Home) or my Macbook Pro (work). The device is not recognized by iTunes (or in general, no notices are given that would indicate that the device is connected). I have:
    - Restored the device via USB
    - Restored it to be Apple format (it was previously Windows format)
    - Confirmed that it DOES work with USB - but that's not what I want
    - Tried this on 2 laptops
    - Confirmed that charging via Firewire DOES work - so I'm assuming that the cable works as well
Is there a diagnostic application that will tell me the status of the on-board firewire port?

I luckily still had a PC around. I was able to reset it on the PC, then reformat on the Mac.

  • 3rd gen iPod not seen by iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista

3rd gen iPod and iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Vista
Used to be flawless. I'd drop the iPod on the dock, Windows would
make that sound of a device attaching, my iPod would appear in iTunes
    and the updating would happen.
Then after going out of town for a weekend (for a funeral), I come back, and my iTunes doesn't see the iPod. I do all the things Apple support and this group has suggested in the past (uninstall/install/reformat iPod/clear registry). It works again! Hooray.
Last night, I plug in the iPod, and iTunes doesn't see the iPod---AGAIN.
I repeat the process above, but this time it doesn't work.
Now, I put the iPod on the dock, Windows beeps, the iPod displays "Do
not connect" but the iPod doesn't appear in iTunes. Eventually the
iPod display will change to a plain old charging display.
    Any ideas?

If you are connecting using USB (and it has the click-wheel ), it's probably a 4th gen iPod...
Not that it matters in this case. The most likely cause is the hard drive has become faulty. It may have worked when you reformatted the iPod the first time because any bad sectors were mapped out. If the drive has too many bad sectors (or has developed some other problems), reformatting will no longer work.
You can run some internal iPod tests using Diagnostic Mode. Use this handy guide to see how to put your iPod into this mode.

  • 3rd gen ipod not detected by mac or pc

Hi, I used my friends laptop all summer with my old 3rd gen ipod and everything was fine... now I'm home and I try to sync it to my dual 1.42 ghz g4 and iTunes wont detect it and the disk doesn't appear on my desktop.
I went into device manager and it is identified under the firewire tab but other than that theres no indication that it is connected to my computer . The Disk utility doesn't detect it either.
So i try my PC notebook and it is recognized as a removable disk in my computer, though I cannot open it and when i try to right click to reformat I my computer stops responding and I have to force quit. very rarely It reaches the format option but when i try to do it it says "disk cannot be formatted".
I've downgraded itunes to the one on the cd, ive reinstalled itunes, and nothing seems to change it. I just need it to show on device manager and I think I will be ok.
The ipod itself works like a champ...the music from my friends laptop plays fine on it, but there just seems to be an issue with connecting it to another computer so i can restore it... any tips?

Have you run Disk First Aid on it? In the Applications Folder, Utilities, Disk Utility
If the System Profiler can find the device, Disk Utility usually can, too. If Disk Utility finds something wrong, run the repair a couple times, even if DFA says it can't fix it.
    Good luck

  • 3rd gen iPod not showing up on iBook G3

Hey everybody...many thanks in advance for your input.
So recently my iPod has stopped mounting on my desktop and stopped updating from iTunes. The disk profiler and disk utility do not recognize that it is attached, even when it is in disk mode. I have tried restoring it and restarting it to no avail. I have shut down the computer, unplugged it, let it rest, and restarted...that hasn't worked.
The iPod does mount on other macs...it worked fine on my mother's eMac and even on the apple store computer i brought it into for repair. So I have no idea what is going on with my firewire port. The port is still working, because when I plug it in the battery charges, but my library doesn't upload, and the device doesn't mount. Please help!

I am having the same problem. I have a 3rd generation iPod and a 733 Mhz G4 Quicksilver with OS X 10.4.3. The problem only exists over Firewire and only on my computer. The ipod will work with other computers over firewire and it will work over my computer with USB. However, since I don't have USB 2 and 3rd generation iPods can't charge over USB, this makes updating my ipod very difficult. I have tried the following things to no avail:
•Resetting iPod by holding down Menu/Play simultaneously
    •Resetting iPod into disk mode
    •Restoring iPod (via USB connection)
•Shutting down the computer, unplugging all cables and waiting (this actually worked once, momentarily. The problem immediately returned).
•Reinstalling my firewire .kext files from the OS X 10.4.3 combo updater (using a program called Pacifist) and restarting the computer.
•Resetting the PRAM on my computer
Any other ideas? This seems to be an issue potentially affecting thousands of people.
As for RassCQ, sorry, I have no solution for you, but maybe someone else does?

  • 3rd gen ipod not charging

    Hi-
Hoping for help...and hoping that Ipod isn't dead and needing to be replaced. Noticed that ipod wasn't charging in dock connector at work, nor would it charge if directly connected to adapter despite battery icon appearing. I had 2nd AC adapter at home and plugged it in, little charging icon appeared and I thought all was well until I went to use it this AM and there's very little battery there (about half and less if I start to use it) after an overnight charge. I've already done the reset and it made no difference. So, do iPods have a shelf life? I do live near a store but is this something that would cost a lot to repair and hence cheaper to simply buy a new iPod? Any sugggestions are much appreciated!

It can be a bit intimidating to open your iPod, though it is rather difficult to hurt it. If you're not feeling very confident you can 1) have a friend do it or 2) go to the Apple store and pay a bit extra. I don't know if they can do the replacement in-store (though I assume they will).
Can't hurt to stop by though

Never mind, I think. I think I figured it out. There was 1 song (out of > 900!) that somehow had been purchased with the other ID - I have no idea how. Once I deleted that song, it stopped asking.
There may be something with the newest iTunes version too. I didn't think in older versions that the "On this iPod" list of songs was greyed out. But at least it syncs ok.

Hi. My ipod touch (3rd gen) will not turn off or resond to anything and will not connect to a computer. the screen will not go into sleep mode and i dont know what to do. help?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My iPod touch 3rd gen is not updating to the latest software, iTunes keeps saying that there was a problem connecting to the update server...

I don't think I ever registered my 3rd gen iPod. I was never able to update it past its original software because iTunes could never recognize it. Unfortunately, my wife had installed data on it (old & recently purchased) so I've been very hesitant to "Restore" it. I recently plugged it into my laptop & it prompted me to install the iOS 5.0.1 software, but after multiple attempts to do so iTunes keeps giving me the same error message "update  install failed. Connection to the update software server has timed out". How do I update the software without losing all my wife's data?

If you already have iOS5.0, Go to settings-general-software update, scroll to the bottom and hit download and install and this should update it without the computer. Then when you connect the iPod to iTunes, it should say 5.0.1. If this doesn't work, DON'T ERASE IT. Just bring it in to Apple. I had the same issue trying to update to 5.0.  and eventually I got it to work after waiting for a little while. Good luck!

    Hi ChristianHelpplz,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, but your iPhone 6 is working normally.
I recommend starting with these steps to troubleshoot your iPod touch and connection with your Mac:
    Check your USB connections
Unplug other USB devices from your Mac and try again.
    Try a different USB port.
    Try a different USB cable.
    Restart your device
Restart your iOS device or reset your iPod.
    Restart your Mac
Turn your Mac off and back on.
    Update your software
Check for software updates on your Mac.
    Check for an iTunes update.
    Check your security software
If you have security software installed, learn how to resolve issues between iTunes and your security software.

If you've tried these steps and your iPod touch is still not recognized, try placing it into Recovery Mode next:

  • TS1410 My ipod nano 3rd gen. is not recognized by my computer or itunes.  Support page does not help.

My macbook is not recognizing my 3rd gen. ipod nano after I reset the ipod.  THe finder not itunes recognizes it.  Can someone help?

If you have not already, disconnect the iPod and restart your Mac.  Do this to Reset the iPod.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
Once the Mac restarts, run iTunes and connect the iPod.
If that does not help, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
then, connect it to the Mac running iTunes.  It's possible that iTunes will tell you that you need to Restore the iPod.

  • I am unable to connect my 3rd gen iPod to my Windows 7 Laptop or iTunes

Once again, Apple support Communities creates a new question instead of letting me search within iPod touch for my own research.
For the past six months I have been unable to sync my iPod to iTunes.
The 3rd Gen iPod Touch will not connect to Windows 7 and not recognized by iTunes 11.1.1.11.
I have data/info on my iPod that I prefer not to compromise by doing a hard reset.
I have confirmed that my iPod nano does sync with iTunes on my Win7 Machine. So I'm pretty certain my cable is working ok.
I've heard that I can somehow sync via wifi, but I'm still not sure if that means I can backup my Notes, Contacts and other data without the use of applications like MS Office/Outlook etc.
Thankfully, or detrimentally, I've been able to go for the last few years without changing the 10k songs on my iPod touch. But over the last six months, I've finally started getting bored with the existing songs. Hence the need to solve the non-syncing issue. And I don't like going blindly forward without a backup. My battery and home button have become glitchy and I'm concerned I may lose the unit completely one day soon.
If anyone reading this has any experience with a similar issue, or could offer advice, workaround, or solution, I would be greatly appreciative. And I hope to assist others as I learn more through solving my Apple issues.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    The Ipod works fine.
Battery charges regularly with the occasional glitch.
    Running iTunes 11.1.1.11
I figured a Nano would probably connect in a simpler way than the touch, but only have a couple computers and cables to test.
I've reinstalled iTunes, but not the full suite, and not all traces. I will attempt this, but I suspect its related to my touch. I was able to connect other iphones to my itunes without issue, using the same cable.
