3rd Gen iPod only charges when plugged into computer

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out with this. My trusty 3rd Generation iPod has never had any problems until just recently. Whenever I plug in my iPod to my computer, it just charges and doesn't even spin the hard drive as if it was connecting to the computer. I'd love to just reformat the stupid thing but I can't as the computer can't find it. I've reinstalled iTunes several times, uninstalled the firewire card drivers and let Windows reinstall them, but it still doesn't show up. Any ideas on what to do? And yes, I read the "iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows" help article, and it was of no use to me.

I still would not rule out a bad connection cable but it may be the dock connection on the iPod. I would try connecting the iPod to another computer(i.e: take it to the nearest Apple Store).

I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out with this. My trusty 3rd Generation iPod has never had any problems until just recently. Whenever I plug in my iPod to my Powerbook, it just charges and doesn't even spin the hard drive as if it was connecting to the computer. I'd love to just reformat the stupid thing but I can't as the computer can't find it. And I just bought a brand new Apple iPod Dock-Firewire cable, and nothing new is happening. Still charging but not loading. I've even tried plugging it into my PC in hopes of having it ask me to reformat it, but no luck their either.

  • My iPod only works when plugged into a wall socket!

Anyone know why my iPOD only works when plugged into a wall outlet? I tried it on the Bose docking station and also my MacBook and it won't work!
    Any ideas??

Sounds like a dead battery.  You can have Apple swap out the battery for a flat fee or you can send it to a third party service center to have them do the same for job a little less.

  • IPhone will not charge when plugged into computer

My phone was not working, and so I took it to the apple store nearby. Here were the problems:
-error message saying "this device not made to work with iPhone"
-would not charge when plugged into computer OR wall charger
-person on other end of phone calls said i sounded really far away and had trouble hearing me
-when i shut it off, it restarts itself immediately
-cant do a manual reset holding the power and center buttons at same time
-when plugged into the computer, mouse freezes, and a message appears saying ""power surge on hub port A usb device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port."
At the genuis bar they told me they cant help me cause that little water damage indicator inside the headphone hole is pink instead of white! I have never ever ever ever ever EVER gotten my phone directly wet. The only thing i could think of was the humidity in the bathroom when I'm taking a shower, and using the timer to use hair remover on my legs lol. But i think this is totally unfair, they wont repair my phone, or even really look at it because of this supposed water damage. My phone has worked fine up to this point, and the thing that happened that started all of this is when i dropped it about a foot off the ground in a DRY parking lot.
Is there any way they will replace my iphone at no charge?

Well don't give up try again maybe your luck will change when you go back up there, let somebody else look at your phone not the same person that told you that.I would get a second and a 3rd option about my phone. When you go back don't even tell them what somebody already told you up there ones.
And after the 3rd time I'll ask them well can they send your phone off to be fixed,It might not be nothing wrong with your phone it might be just they eyes playing tricks on them.Cause I promise you I know my phone had gotten some water in it cause I was sitting on the porch one day me and about 6 other people one of my cousin came out and through a bucket of water at my brother and I was sitting right on the side of him.And when I say my phone look like I than gave it a bath witch when they did that I had already had call the Apple store and told them something was wrong with my phone. And they had gave me appt to come up there,so I went to the Apple store I wanted say two day's latter after I made the appt to let them see my phone but my cousin and brother was playing with that water the day before I had to go so I guess that's why I was mad cause I was going to get other phone the next day after apple look at my old phone. So even with all that they still gave me other phone and I don't see how I didn't have no water in my phone cause of how much water they had through on my phone.
I guess I was luck cause if they would have told me that I would have freaked out so badly. And the reason why cause I wouldn't had my phone for five days and for them to tell me they couldn't do something oh yea they would have done something cause I would have went to jail that day for tearing up something in the store that worth my 400 and something dollars I spent on my phone and it would have bent one of them computer that would have bent history.
But I'M telling you,you going to be okay don't give up.Make you other appt and see what they say.

  • How come my Ipod Touch will only charge when plugged into a computer and not a docking station or wall socket?

My IPhone works with both the charging USB cable as well as the wall socket and docking station.  Additionally, my IPod used to charge using both the wall socket plug in and the docking station.  My IPod will stay play music when plugged into the docking station, but won't charge.  Further, when I plug my IPod into my computer all it will do is charge and is not recognized by ITunes.  I have done both a soft and hard reset.

If the iPhone has no problem with the same cable then

  • How to recover music? iPod only works when plugged into wall outlet

My iPod is probably 5 years old or so. It's been acting up for a while and I stupidly, did not back it up.
The battery was replaced this weekend so it works when plugged into the wall. It will not power on or do anything when not plugged into the wall. When plugged into the wall charger, it can turn on and says it is charging. It can be used then but as soon as it is unplugged, it's dead.
When it is plugged into the computer, it says "Charging. Please wait...". There isn't enough power from my laptop to power the iPod, so my computer doesn't even recognize it. It does not show up in iTunes.
On the brightside, I have a new iPod classic waiting to be used. However, I would VERY much like to get my 90gb+ off of my old iPod first. Is there a way to do this?
I'm at a loss. Some of the files are on there are not anywhere else. I have a few songs by a friend who lost them on their own computer.
Any help would be very appreciated!

Bump. Is there no way to solve this?

  • IPod only works while plugged into computer!

Help! My 2Gb iPod nano went through the washing machine, and after a few days of drying out, it only works while plugged into the computer. As soon as I take it out, the screen goes blank. I can access all my music, podcasts and photos while it's plugged in. I have tried the 5 Rs to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?

I also sent my nano through the wash and I found that if you get an ac adapter and plug it in for a few hours you will have battery life. This made me very happy however I have noticed that I can not turn the ipod off unless the hold button is on. Battery life is also not as long but long enough for me. Hope this helps

  • IPod Touch not recognized by iTunes and not charging when plugged into computer

I plugged in my iPod touch to my Mac computer. My iPod doesn't charge and iTunes isn't recognizing it. I have turned my iPod on/off, I have reset it, I have the newest version of iTunes, and I restarted my computer. Nothing has helped. What do I do?

Did it sync to the computer before?
What model iPod do you have and what iOS is installed?
Your post states that your have OSX 10.4.11. If you updated the iOS on your iPod on another computer your computer may not recognize the iPod.  The newer iOS require 10.5.8 or higher.

  • Ipod locks up when plugged into computer

I just downloaded itunes 7. And my video ipod came up on the desktop and in itunes as usual. Then I updated my ipod with the latest software and from now on whenever I plug it into my computer it instantly locks up and is not recognized by my computer. Suggestions?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm having a very similar problem. Upon first connecting (after iTunes 7 update) my iPod to my Windows notebook, it prompted me to update my iPod. So of course I said ok.... While trying to update the iPod it (the iPod) frooze and didn't install the update. I found a workaround to trick to to install. (Tell it to update it, disconnect for a few seconds and reconnect, it won't freeze and will restart and install the update.)
Anyhow, now that the iPod has been updated to 1.2 software, I get artifacts on the screen (blocks & lines of various colors) and eventually it freezes up. I thought I'd try to restore the iPod, however, doing so did NOT really help. I still get the screwed up screen and frozen iPod! Although, it didn't freeze when it was updating the iPod with all my content (had prior to restoring).
Not sure what Apple did, but they sure messed this one up!!
EDIT: I found this post, which describes exactly what I've been dealing with... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=637616&tstart=0

  • I have had my ipad for 6 months. We had a power failure and ever since my ipad will not charge with the wall adapter that came with it.  It will SLOWLY charge when plugged into computer port. Can anyone help me resolve this?

I have had my iPad for 6 months.  We recently had a power outage and my iPad was plugged in with the adapter that came with it.  Since then I can not charge iPad with adapter, however I can charge it SLOWLY on my computer.  Do you think the adapter got fried?  Also do you HAVE to have iTunes with an iPad, they were charging me alot of fees for games I did not download NOR give my password to have them downloaded so I cancelled iTunes because fo too many fees. Could this have anyting to do with the battery not charging?

Since then I can not charge iPad with adapter, however I can charge it SLOWLY on my computer.
Well, something's definitely wrong if it won't charge from a wall outlet. Make an appointment at a Genius Bar or take it to an Apple certified repair provider.

  • 7th gen Nano only works when plugged in, turns off when  unplugged... battery is fully charged.

7th gen Nano only works when plugged into computer, as soon as I unplug it shuts off (it was ejected from iTunes). Battery is fully charged.  Have already done a restore in iTunes and checked for updated software.

    Hello there, DizDude.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good recommendations for troubleshooting battery issues with the 7th generation iPod Nano:
iPod nano (7th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4433
    Particularly this section:
    Battery life appears short
Learn how to conserve battery life.
Ensure that the latest software is installed on the iPod.
When charging, use the cable that came with iPod nano (7th generation) and leave the device connected until it is fully charged.
Note: If you are charging using your computer, don't connect iPod nano (7th generation) to your keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPod nano (7th generation) is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPod nano (7th generation) battery may drain.
When you are done using the iPod nano, verify that:
The Radio application is off (tap the button)
Music is paused (tap the button in the iPod application or disconnect the earphones)
There is no active Pedometer session (tap the Stop button in the Fitness application)
Dimming the screen is another way to extend battery life on iPod nano. Go to Settings > General > Brightness and restore the brightness to the default, or drag the slider to the left to lower the default screen brightness.
Playing tracks with EQ requires your iPod processor to consume more energy than playing tracks without EQ, because the EQ information is not encoded in the song. To prolong battery life, turn EQ off if you don't use it. Go to Settings > Music > EQ and select Off from the list. Note, however, that if you've added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you'll need to set EQ to Flat to have the effect of Off, because iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact.
Try restoring iPod nano (7th generation) by connecting it to iTunes and clicking Restore.
    Test the battery life.
    Issue not resolved
If the issue is still not resolved, please read this information on servicing your iPod.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • 3rd gen iPod not recognized when using Firewire

The 3rd gen iPod only charges via FireWire. Given the lousy battery life provided by the device, I need to be able to sync using the Firewire port of my Macbook (Home) or my Macbook Pro (work). The device is not recognized by iTunes (or in general, no notices are given that would indicate that the device is connected). I have:
    - Restored the device via USB
    - Restored it to be Apple format (it was previously Windows format)
    - Confirmed that it DOES work with USB - but that's not what I want
    - Tried this on 2 laptops
    - Confirmed that charging via Firewire DOES work - so I'm assuming that the cable works as well
Is there a diagnostic application that will tell me the status of the on-board firewire port?

I luckily still had a PC around. I was able to reset it on the PC, then reformat on the Mac.
