3rd Gen iPod refusing to update

Ok, here's whats happened, any help would be most appreciated.
I have a 3Rd Gen Ipod, and after updating to iTunes 7, it got completely wiped of nearly 4000 songs. I tried to update it several times with iTunes and it basically refused to do anything, and kept freezing my computer, and coming up with the message "The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive I: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." Very frustrating
I have since restored it many times and retried updating, again no joy. I then formatted it via windows (twice now) on the advice from the nice lady on the Apple Tech Support line. And have even changed the drive letter from I to J.
Now at least it will let me add music to it, but it won't let me put any more than 1.22Gb onto it. If i try and put just one more song on it freezes and either comes up with "unknown error occured (-53) " or unknown error occured (-124)
Also i have tried various USB connections etc, but none of it has made a difference.
I'm a bit loathed to give Apple £170 for a service when i could just buy a new iPod for not much more. So does anyone have some advice re the above problem?

bump....
sorry does anyone have any ideas?

  • 3rd gen iPod won't update or restore with iTunes 7

Ok, so my iPod has been kinda messed up for a while... it's getting a little older, and the battery is pretty much shot. During my last attempt at getting the iPod to sync with iTunes (a few weeks ago), I somehow managed to get it into disk mode, and I don't know how to undo it.
Ok so that's one problem, but I don't know if that's affecting my iPod now or not.
I have just recently--within the last couple of days--started trying again to fix my iPod. I've been looking at the support site, following any instructions I can find, and to no avail. Unfortunately, the time I decided to start working on my iPod was the same time the iTunes update came out, and from what I hear, people have been having many problems with iTunes 7 and iPod updater 2.0.
I hook my iPod up to my computer, iTunes recognizes it--which is an improvement over the last version of iTunes, which didn't know my iPod existed--and the first time, it tells me the iPod is corrupted and need to be updated or restored. So I hit ok, then click "restore." It goes through the motions of restoring, then tells me it has restored, that it will then restart, and then show up on the "sources" list in iTunes, but it never shows up. The iPod itself says "OK to disconnect," and shows NO sign of restarting. I disconnect and reconnect my iPod, and then iTunes tells me the iPod is in "recovery mode" and needs to be restored. Same deal. Says it's restoring but nada. Now it does that same thing everytime I connect it.
Is it just that my iPod is completely shot? Or is it because I'm trying to update it with a shotty version of iTunes? I'm stuck. Can someone PLEASE help me?!

Well, stopping the iPodservice didn't make any difference. Apparently the iPod is so shot that iPodservice wasn't doing anything anyway, so it formatted fine even with iPodservice running.
So here's the deal. I have been able to format my iPod. I've already done that. It's completely erased, formatted, redone, everything. But it will not restore in iTunes. Using iTunes 7, it shows up in the source list, but iTunes says it has found an iPod in recovery mode that needs to be restored. So then I click restore and it says it has restored, but it doesn't do anything. Just goes to an OK to disconnect screen. Unfortunately, I don't know if this is just an iTunes 7 issue or not, because my iPod doesn't even show up in any other version of iTunes.
I tried many different things... when I restart my iPod and it isn't connected, it goes to the Apple, but then it comes up with the folder and exclamation mark icon, while the disk is whirring away. When I restart it while it is connected, it restarts, and iTunes says the same thing about the iPod in recovery mode.
I tried putting the iPod into diagnostic mode, as is suggested in the intermediate steps in one of the posts, but because I can't even restart the iPod, I can't put it into diagnostic mode.
I even tried what appeared to be the miracle fix for everyone's iPods--hitting it on the desk on its upper right corner. No such luck. I think my iPod is shot... and I just realized how much it costs to send yours in and get a replacement refurbished iPod... It's just not worth it... but then again, it seems like it's probably not worth it to get a new iPod now, either, since none of the software seems to be working correctly, and since I seem to have bad luck with electronics... maybe I'll wait until Microsoft comes out with their new media player... I should definitely be looking into something other than an iPod, since they obviously suck right now.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

  • 3rd Gen Ipod touch 5.1.1 update grays out wifi

After updating my 3rd Gen ipod touch, I can no longer use wifi. The wifi box is grayed out. I have reset the network connection settings, and have reset the ipod back to factory settings and still nothing. I see that this has happened to lots of iphone users but havent heard much about ipod touch. I wont even think about updating my iphone until a bug fix comes out. So far Apple is saying it is a hardware issue, but theres no way. No way thousands of people are having a hardware issue just after a software update. Can anyone help?
Also now only about 20% of my songs will load on the ipod and the screen is frozen. Great

One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • Updating iTunes to 11.0.4, Will my 3rd gen iPod touch work fine on it with version 4.3.1

Well I received a free iPhone 4 but to use it with my iTunes I need to update iTunes to 11.0.4.  Was just wondering if I would have any problems using my 3rd gen iPod touch with 4.3.1 on the newest iTunes.  Thanks in advance.

    You should have no problems.

  • When i try to update software for my 3rd Gen iPod Touch to version 5 i get the message 'This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version'. My Mac OS is 10.4.11. How can I update the iPod software?

The later iOSs requires at least OSX 10.5.8 for the Mac.  You need iTunes 10.5 but 10.4.11 only goes to 9.x.. 10.5.8 is a paid upgrade.
Are you sure that you have a 3G iPod?  If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G and those can only go to 4.2.1 (also requires 10.5.8 or later). A 32 GB can be either  2G or 3G. To identify yours:

  • Security Update 2008-006 broke Firewire mounting of 3rd Gen iPod

Updated overnight on my PowerBook G4. This morning my 3rd Gen iPod won't mount on the desktop. It will charge but not mount. Used my wife's USB dock connector and it mounted. I am upset. This is how I transfer files from home Mac to work Mac. Any suggestions?

First thing to do is reset the FW chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac) & remove the battery. Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive.
Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the battery, plug the power cord back in & start up the Mac. Now plug in the iPod and see if your FW ports work any better.
    Best of luck!

  • Need help updating a 3rd Gen iPod Touch....

I have a 3rd Gen iPod Touch running iOS4.1. I have an iMac G5 running OSX10.4.11. The iTunes version is 9.2.1. When I connect my iPod to my iMac and click 'Update' in iTunes it simply states 'You have the latest version of iTunes 9.2.1'. How can I update my iPod?

You need to update the OSX on your computer. Going higher that 4.1 requires iTunes 10 or higher. iTunes 10 requires OSX 10.5.8 or higher.

  • HT5457 why dont you update the 3rd gen ipod touch to iOS 6?

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch and don't have the money to get a newer ipod so why cant you make iOS 6 available for 3rd gen ipod touches?

    1) You are not talking to Apple here.  We are users just like you.
    2) The 3rd gen iPod does not have the hardware to be able to use iOS 6
    3) As of now, almost all available apps will also run on iOS 5.
