3rd gen iPod touch, iOS 5.1.1.  Purchased music appears to be on device, cannot be played, cannot be deleted.  Not sure what I did.

3rd generation iPod touch with iOS 5.1.1.  This is now my daughter's iPod and apparently it had been set up to automatically sync new purchases, but the iTunes store and Match were turned off, so when I removed restrictions tonight to update some apps and reconfigure some stuff, a bunch of albums purchased in the last few months tried to syncrhonize to the device.  Somehow I eneded up removing the download option yet the album titles and songs appear in the music app.  How can I remove these "files"?  According to iTunes, they aren't on the device.  They do not play.  There are no pending downloads in iTunes store.
I am hopeful there is a solution short of restoring the device.  Since it's my daughter's iPod now (handed down) and she has her games with progress saved, any restore will erase her progress.
Thanks in advance.

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music (This delete all may not be applicale to iOS 5)
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
  - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?

Why won't iTunes 11.0.1 sync my Podcasts to my 3rd Gen iPod Touch on IOS 6.0.1?  I'm running iTunes on my MacBook with Mac OSX 10.6.8.  I've checked to make sure in iTunes that the Podcast Sync box is checked and it is.  I've tried checking communities and tried several suggestions and nothing seems to work for me.  Everything else syncs except Podcasts.  I can't figure it out. Any suggestions to get Podcasts syncing to my iPod Touch again?  Thanks!

One other step I've tried was removing and completely reinstalling the playlist to the iPod. That cleared up the problem for about two days.

  • HT5457 why dont you update the 3rd gen ipod touch to iOS 6?

I have a 3rd gen ipod touch and don't have the money to get a newer ipod so why cant you make iOS 6 available for 3rd gen ipod touches?

    1) You are not talking to Apple here.  We are users just like you.
    2) The 3rd gen iPod does not have the hardware to be able to use iOS 6
    3) As of now, almost all available apps will also run on iOS 5.

why does itunes say i have the latest version 4.2.1 (8c148) for my 3rd gen iPod touch when it should be iOS 5?

Be sure it is really a 3rd gen. Some people with 2nd gens were told they were 3rd gens.  Identifying iPod models or Look up specs by Serial Number. If it is a 2nd gen, then you can't upgrade.
IF IT REALLY IS A THIRD GEN iPod Touch, then you first need to upgrade to iTunes 10.5 in order to download iOS 5 because older versions of iTunes don't support and can't sync with iOS 5.

    Hi ChristianHelpplz,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes on your Mac, but your iPhone 6 is working normally.
I recommend starting with these steps to troubleshoot your iPod touch and connection with your Mac:
    Check your USB connections
Unplug other USB devices from your Mac and try again.
    Try a different USB port.
    Try a different USB cable.
    Restart your device
Restart your iOS device or reset your iPod.
    Restart your Mac
Turn your Mac off and back on.
    Update your software
Check for software updates on your Mac.
    Check for an iTunes update.
    Check your security software
If you have security software installed, learn how to resolve issues between iTunes and your security software.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable

I'm not sure if others have experienced the problem but I've been using iBooks and I'm finding that the device randomly resets while in use.

I've been trying to download Trenches II onto my 3rd gen ipod touch, but when I do it says that it's incompatable, the only problem is that I fufill all requirements (iOS 3.1 and 3rd gen ipod minimum)

Please check the model number on the back. If it is A1288, it is a 2nd gen unit.

  • Where can i find a list of games for a 3rd gen ipod touch

i got a second hand 3rd gen ipod touch for my daughter for xmas. All the games on the ipod wont let us download as they say the ipod is not new enough. Has anyone got any suggestions.

I suspect you really have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1. A 3G can go to 5.1.1

AirPring requires a 3G or later iPod.  Are you sure you have a 3G iPod?  A 2G iPod can only go to iOS 4.2.1 and that is what you say you have. If yours is an 8 or 16 GB one it is a 2G. A 32 GB can be either. See:

  • 3rd-Gen Ipod Touch Overheating All the Time!

I have a 3rd-Gen Ipod Touch, 32gb that I bought over a year ago. I've never had a problem with it before until about two weeks ago and it's concerning me quite a bit. Whenever I use it, within 5 minutes it becomes very hot, mostly on the bottom near where it charges. Within 10 minutes, the heat has spread throughout the whole device and has become so hot that I can no longer hold it. This happens all the time, not when it's charging. I'm worried that it will overheat to the point that I can no longer use it.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way that I can fix this? Do I have to have the battery replaced or something?
I appreciate any feedback, and thanks.

Sounds like a bad battery. Search ebay, there are people who provide the replacement service for as low as $19.
