3rd gen iPod will not complete the RESTORE process with new Hard Drive

I have an 3rd gen iPod and I have replaced the hard drive with a newer MK2006GAL. The drive formats fine with a USB cable, formating Mac OS Extended Journaled. It will not complete a "restore" when connected via FireWire in iTunes or with any ipod updater utility. this happens on any mac (we have several). It will not even see the iPod updater when connected via USB and it says MUST CONNECT WITH A FIREWIRE CABLE. It will not format with Disk Utility when connected with the Apple FireWire cable only USB. This is the second new hard drive I have tried. I thought the first "replacement drive" was bad. Turns out it must be something else. Does this sound like a bad battery or motherboard or bad FireWire cable to you? The connectors look fine (under magnification). other problems, while this iPod will not Restore properly, it also will not turn off.
Would like to know if anyone else has seen this trouble.

Hmm now getting this message.
"The ipod "ipod" could not be restored.An Unknown Error occured (1429)".
It still will not format. Does anyone know what a 1429 error is?

I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
Any help is appreciated.

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
      left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
      the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
      the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
           because it is three times faster than wireless.

IMovie 9.0.7 will not complete the update either with the download dmg file from the apple site or from the OS software update. I would appreciate some advice.

When installing the new update 9.0.7 to iMovie either via a dmg file or from the software updater the install will not complete the installation. Try this.
After signing into the Mac App Store (MAS) with your iTunes Apple ID, look at the Purchased page. You should see the three bundled iLife apps listed with Accept buttons. After you have accepted them and Apple has verified that they came on a new Mac and assigned them to your Apple ID and iTunes/MAS account, you should be able to update them.

ITunes will not finish the restoring process for my iPhone 4s

So I have been trying to restore my iPhone 4s but iTunes will not finish the process. I have the latest versions in both my phone, iTunes and windows updates... I have restarted the iPhone, the comoputer and iTunes... I'm at a lost on what to do. The phone screen has the plug going toward the iTunes icon but when I do connect it to iTunes it does not restore. iTunes goes through the motions until it gets to "preparing iPHone to restore" after that it just kind of stays there for about half an hour and then it shoot out an error 2003 saying the iTunes couldnt' finish the process... I have all of my firewalls off too... Any suggestions?

I'd possibly say to check USB connections. Maybe another cable.
All else fails, you might try to restore on another computer.

External drive not showing up - which disk initialization method will NOT erase the data on that external hard drive?

as thousands of other users, my WD Passport drive worked like a charm until yesterday and now it wont show on any computer, but does show in the Disk management and when plugged in , the Disk Management offers two ways of initialization : MBR and GPT
i dont understand any of that and want to know if any of those two methods will make the disk initialize wITHOUT loosing the data on the drive?
i looked on so many forums and some people say that it will and others that it will not erase the data.
can you please tell me what is correct?? also a suggestion is to add some more wording to that initializaiton dialog box so that we can know what initialization does and doesnt

Try connecting it to a different computer to see if you can access the data, under no circumstances should you Initialize the drive as all existing data will be lost.
If you still can't access your files, then remove the drive from the case and connect it via an extra SATA cable and power connector (you usually need a desktop PC in order to do this if the drive is a 3.5 inch model, a 2.5in drive will fit into a laptop
if you have a spare slot).

Restoring computer with new hard drive & Logic Board using Time Machine

My MBPro totally crashed and just got it back from Apple with a new hard drive, logic board, optical super drive, one new 1GB ram chip, and a new video display panel. My questions are two fold, first, have I had so much replaced on this machine that I need to use Migration Assistant instead of Time Machine to restore it?
Second, If I am suppose to be using Time Machine, I'm having no success! My TM backups were done on a network drive via Airport Extreme with a HD attached to it. Through the Snow Leopard disk utility, I can access the partition with the backup on it, but then it hangs on "opening TM backup". After about a half hour, I had to do a hard shut down (no other option). I did this several times, same result. So the question is;
Can I plug the HD directly into my MBPro and restore it that way? I'm not sure if I can do this as I know the backups are different for hard wired and networked drives.
Or can I use an ethernet cable and plug Airport Extreme with the external drive attached into my laptop?

no. you can do a full system restore from TM using the restore utility on the snow leopard DVD.

no, this is not how you should do it. connect the AEBS by ethernet. then boot from the snow leopard dvd and use "restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu. it will let you find the backup on the network and do a full system restore from it.

I have a 3rd Generation non- click-wheel Ipod.

Dock
No way of charging it on my computer (usb 1.1 and 4 pin firewire)
I recently bought a wall charger, and I plug it in, and nothing happens. I am really anxious to use my ipod (I got it used) but I can't charge it. I have put it on a firewire and I has charged that way. But I have never charged it via usb or through my charger. Is my USB cord broken or is it my Wall charger (or possibly the ipod)? Any help or other ways to charge it under $40 USD would be appreciated.

If your iPod is (dock connector) it will not charge over USB2. Charging this unit requries a built in 6 pins firewire port or the firewire iPod Power adapter

Bring up the disk utility with new hard drive

My hard drive died, completely dead! I have a Macbook Pro 15" i core 5 and I just installed a new drive. I have my macbook backed up to a WD My Book Live. Is there a command option that i can use to tell my macbook to load from a back up? I also have a Snow Leopard CD i bought recently but it won't boot from that. It looks like it does, it shows on the start up screen when i press the option key but i selected it, nothing really happened. I just heard it spinning for a little bit.

If you created a Time Machine backup from Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you created a bootable clone of any Mac OS X version, connect the drive containing it and restart the computer with the Option key held down.
If you can't boot the computer from the backup, you'll need to use a Mac OS X install DVD or Apple's Internet Recovery system(on eligible Macs, press the Option, Command, and R keys at startup) to restore it, and if needed, install an OS.

3rd gen Ipod will not connect to wifi

It says "unable to join the network ___". I have connected to this network before, a million times. It will connect for 2 seconds then not work.

As long as you are 100% positive you are entering the password in correctly, try resetting your router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds. It wouldn't hurt to also reset your network settings on your iPod Touch. To do this, head to Settings -> General -> Reset -> and tap Reset Networking Settings.

Time Machine will not delete the oldest backup when external hard drive is full

I may not understand this timemachine thing, but....
I have macbook pro, 15", mid 2011, mountain lion......I have a WD Passport Studio I have ben using to back up with time machine periodically. I tried to back up today and it says i do not have enough room on my external drive. I tought the time machine automatically deletes the oldest back up?

I agree with Linc's response but you also have to realize that it will keep the oldest backup and start removing snapshots if it can.
It is my undestanding that time machine does what is called a full backup the first time and then the snapshots done after that are changes since the first backup. I'm not sure if time machine then does periodic backups or just snapshots.
