That's why it's important to have a back up of all your music.
Have you seen this?

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't charge with USB connector - Is that normal?

I have the above iPod, and I noticed that when I tried to plug it in to charge it with a newer USB connector it will not charge. It will however, let me update my iTunes music. Is this normal for an older iPod?

I believe that is correct. That iPod was often called the iPod with 'dock connector', and as this chart shows, won't charge via USB.

  • 3rd gen ipod won't connect with firewire.

3rd gen ipod won't connect to itunes with firewire. USB connects rarely but drains battery quickly. I've rebooted the ipod and computer and updated itunes. No effect. Any remedies besides buying a new ipod.

Answer to Question 1: - I connected the iPod with the USB, went to Disk Utility and erased the iPod. Now the iPod works with USB.
Question 2 is still unanswered. Ideas?

  • Dock for 3rd Gen. iPod Won't Work w/ 5th Gen. iPod?

I have a third generation (G3) iPod, which came with a docking station and an iPod-to-firewire cable. I also have a fifth generation (G5) iPod, which did not come with a docking station, but did come with an iPod-to-USB cable.
I can charge the G3 iPod using the dock and the firewire cable, but the G5 iPod won't charge using that same dock, nor will iTunes recognize the G5 iPod. Even if I plug the USB cable into the dock instead of the firewire one, it won't charge or get recognized.
Am I doing something wrong, do I need a different cable, or do I need to get one of the new docking stations? If the latter, will that docking station work with both my G3 and my G5 iPods?
    - Keith

Yes, the universal dock with work with the 3rd generation iPod--you can check the specs through the Apple Store's product description page. I also know that you can't charge the 5th Gen iPod using the 3rd Gen firewire cable + adapter (I asked about that at the Apple Store today).
What I'd like to know more about is why the 3rd Gen Dock isn't compatible with the 5th Gen iPod even if you use the USB connector. So this is "helpful" but I'm echoing your question about the dock: Why Dock 3 work with iPod 5?

  • 3rd Gen Ipod won't sync with Itunes since upgrade to Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard and since then my trusty 3rd Gen Ipod will not sync with iTunes (9.0.3). It mounts in Finder, but does not appear in iTunes. The iPod will still charge, but it constantly displays the "Do Not Disconnect" message until manually ejected.
    Any help gratefully received.

  • Is a 3rd gen ipod supposed to charge from computer?

I just bought a ipod off ebay, it is a 15gb 3rd gen ipod with touch wheel, but when I plug it into my computer, My computer recognizes it and everything, it just doesn't charge. I have a cigarett charger, and it charges it fine. I updated it to the newest version, and it still doesn't charge, is there any way i can fix that without the restore, since i have music i still haven't transfered, because it keeps dying when plugged into my computer?

Okay. I was reading the USB does not provide power, not that the 3G iPod does not accept power thru USB.
But I must also admit, I forgot the little fact that it's FW charge only.

  • My 5th Gen. iPod won't charge

I recently got my iPod replaced when the screen was cracked. So I got a brand new one and a yesterday it wouldn't charge. It worked fine for about a month. I didn't get a new cable, I kept the one I had that worked fine. I plug it in and it just won't charge. I tried other sources like my iPod speaker that also worked fine before. It even plays music through it, which means I know it's connected, but it's not charging! I really do not think that it's the cables. Please help!

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • 3rd gen ipod won't sync with itunes 10.2.2

iTunes 10.2.2 will not recognize my 40gb 3rd generation iPod when connected via firewire. I tried connecting via USB but the iPod shuts down and disconnects after a few seconds. This is frustrating because I had no issues using firewire before upgrading to 10.2.2. Can anyone help with this issue?

  • 3rd Gen Ipod Will Not Charge on Wall Charger

    I have a 3rd Generation non- click-wheel Ipod.
    Stock Cords
    Never opened up
    Dock
No way of charging it on my computer (usb 1.1 and 4 pin firewire)
I recently bought a wall charger, and I plug it in, and nothing happens. I am really anxious to use my ipod (I got it used) but I can't charge it. I have put it on a firewire and I has charged that way. But I have never charged it via usb or through my charger. Is my USB cord broken or is it my Wall charger (or possibly the ipod)? Any help or other ways to charge it under $40 USD would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

If your iPod is (dock connector) it will not charge over USB2. Charging this unit requries a built in 6 pins firewire port or the firewire iPod Power adapter

  • So my 3rd gen iPod won't turn on.

Hey there. A few months ago I reformatted my computer, but couldn't reinstall Windows XP on it because I couldn't find the disc, so I put Linux on it instead. That was back in July, and my iPod was working fine then, but yesterday I decided to try and put new music on it using a program called Banshee. It got all my new music on my iPod fine (it didn't update my playlists for some reason, though), and I used it for a few hours with no issues.
And then today when I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't let me access the menu at all. This has happened twice before, and I've been able to fix it by letting it die or plugging it into my computer. So I plugged it into my computer this time, but Banshee didn't recognize it. I ejected it and tried to turn it on, but all I get now is the Apple logo for a few moments, and if it isn't plugged in I get a low battery warning, and if it IS plugged in, it just shows the logo for a few moments, goes blank for a second, shows the logo again, wash, rinse, repeat.
Any solutions? I've tried resetting it already. That didn't help at all. It's old so it isn't covered by warranty anymore, and I don't have the money to send it in for repairs. :/

Ah, I actually don't have a firewire port. My computer was built by my brother-in-law and he never put one in. I always use a wall adapter to charge my iPod.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't mount via firewire - any ideas?

After working for a brief spell when I first hooked it up, the progress bar would freeze while I was trying to copy files across to the HD. I unplugged, reset the iPod and tried it in my old clamshell iBook, where it worked fine again.
I tried resetting the PMU on the Macbook, but this only made things worse - the iPod now refuses to mount, despite still working fine on my old iBook. Tried resetting PRAM too but no difference.
Do I have a duff port? Or could it be an issue with 10.4.6 on the Macbook?

I tried a JVC digital handycam while on the phone to AppleCare, which it recognised in iChat, and showed a live picture in iMovie. I don't know how I would check for consistency with this device, but it seemed to be working ok.
I'm connecting via a dock but have also tried connecting direct - all official Apple cables. No difference.
I'm now noticing new behaviour. When I plug the iPod in it mounts very briefly, triggers iTunes, then unmounts. It stays charging from the Macbook's firewire port, but the 'do not disconnect' disappears and I can use it as if it was only connected to AC. This is reproducible, and is the same if I turn off the launch iTunes option.
Once again, it works flawlessly with the old iBook.
I'm almost tempted to go down to the Apple Store in Regent St. and plug my iPod into a Macbook there to rule out software - unless you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks for your continued support.

  • 3rd gen ipod won't power on   20gb

My son's Ipod has frozen, the screen doesn't even show that it's charging. He said the last thing he remembers is the screen froze with a song, but you could still change the song, it just wouldn't register on the screen. Then the battery died. I went to the apple site and did the turn it to hold and back again thing, and even tried to update it, but it still didn't work. Does anyone know of any other suggestions short of taking it to apple?

    Try these.
How to reset the iPod if it appears frozen or doesn't respond.
It may take quite a few attempts and is best done connected to power.
If this doesn't work, try restoring the iPod to factory settings.
Put the iPod into disk mode first.
    Putting iPod into disk mode.
Restoring erases the iPod hard drive, so you will need to reload your songs from iTunes.

  • 3rd gen iPod won't connect with firewire...how can I restore it?

As many others have had this problem, my iPod only charges when connected with firewire. When I connect with USB, it says "Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings"
When I try the iPod Software Updater, it says I need to connect via Firewire.
Question 1: Any ideas on how to restore the iPod?
Question 2: Any ideas on how to get the firewire functional again?
    Many thanks in advance

  • 3rd gen iPod won't update or restore with iTunes 7

Ok, so my iPod has been kinda messed up for a while... it's getting a little older, and the battery is pretty much shot. During my last attempt at getting the iPod to sync with iTunes (a few weeks ago), I somehow managed to get it into disk mode, and I don't know how to undo it.
Ok so that's one problem, but I don't know if that's affecting my iPod now or not.
I have just recently--within the last couple of days--started trying again to fix my iPod. I've been looking at the support site, following any instructions I can find, and to no avail. Unfortunately, the time I decided to start working on my iPod was the same time the iTunes update came out, and from what I hear, people have been having many problems with iTunes 7 and iPod updater 2.0.
I hook my iPod up to my computer, iTunes recognizes it--which is an improvement over the last version of iTunes, which didn't know my iPod existed--and the first time, it tells me the iPod is corrupted and need to be updated or restored. So I hit ok, then click "restore." It goes through the motions of restoring, then tells me it has restored, that it will then restart, and then show up on the "sources" list in iTunes, but it never shows up. The iPod itself says "OK to disconnect," and shows NO sign of restarting. I disconnect and reconnect my iPod, and then iTunes tells me the iPod is in "recovery mode" and needs to be restored. Same deal. Says it's restoring but nada. Now it does that same thing everytime I connect it.
Is it just that my iPod is completely shot? Or is it because I'm trying to update it with a shotty version of iTunes? I'm stuck. Can someone PLEASE help me?!

Well, stopping the iPodservice didn't make any difference. Apparently the iPod is so shot that iPodservice wasn't doing anything anyway, so it formatted fine even with iPodservice running.
So here's the deal. I have been able to format my iPod. I've already done that. It's completely erased, formatted, redone, everything. But it will not restore in iTunes. Using iTunes 7, it shows up in the source list, but iTunes says it has found an iPod in recovery mode that needs to be restored. So then I click restore and it says it has restored, but it doesn't do anything. Just goes to an OK to disconnect screen. Unfortunately, I don't know if this is just an iTunes 7 issue or not, because my iPod doesn't even show up in any other version of iTunes.
I tried many different things... when I restart my iPod and it isn't connected, it goes to the Apple, but then it comes up with the folder and exclamation mark icon, while the disk is whirring away. When I restart it while it is connected, it restarts, and iTunes says the same thing about the iPod in recovery mode.
I tried putting the iPod into diagnostic mode, as is suggested in the intermediate steps in one of the posts, but because I can't even restart the iPod, I can't put it into diagnostic mode.
I even tried what appeared to be the miracle fix for everyone's iPods--hitting it on the desk on its upper right corner. No such luck. I think my iPod is shot... and I just realized how much it costs to send yours in and get a replacement refurbished iPod... It's just not worth it... but then again, it seems like it's probably not worth it to get a new iPod now, either, since none of the software seems to be working correctly, and since I seem to have bad luck with electronics... maybe I'll wait until Microsoft comes out with their new media player... I should definitely be looking into something other than an iPod, since they obviously suck right now.
