3rd gen User Interface

[This is a slightly toned down and otherwise amended version of a review I posted elsewhere earlier today.]
The new iPod was my first specialised MP3 player purchase, last night. Considering the allegedly superior User Interface design of Mac products, I’m not really that impressed.
Most of the music I listen to is classical, and the whole MP3 industry needs to sort out some fundamental naming problems for classical tracks. For a 2CD-box containing one Mahler symphony, I have two “Albums”, one for “GustavMahler; Symphonie No. 2; Abbado, Chicago SO”, the other for “Mah; Sym 2; Abbado, Chicago SO”.
First requirement: a relational database with a single ID for each composer, work, conductor, orchestra, etc. etc. Preferably with each work categorised as Symphony, String Quartet, Opera, etc. and the ability to have a number and/or name for each - so that “Manfred Symphony”, “Symphony No. 6″, and “Symphony No. 6 (’Pathetique’)” are all possible. Major benefit: only one person has to know how to spell “Shostakovich”. Ideally, each language gets its own versions of names for both people and works. I can amend the album titles in iTunes, but I have to do so once for each track (why, I have no idea - all tracks started with the same album title - what sort of lunatic would want to set different album titles per track?). Later loading up of a 4-disk boxed set of Beethoven quartets and a 2-CD of Verdi's Otello produced similar stupid title differences.
Second requirement: recognition of CDs 1 and 2 (and up...) as part of the same 'album'. I’m really looking forward to putting the Ring cycle on there.
Third requirement: a Work/Disc/track hierarchy, that deals with more than one work on the same CD and more than one CD for the same work. Then we can stop having those idiotic track titles like “Strauss (R), 4 Last Songs, Op. posth. - Im Abendrot” where everything except the song title is the same on 4 different tracks and there isn’t enough screen width to see the parts that are different. Oh, and then the addition of “Work” to the categories like “Album”, “Playlist” and so on.
The same kind of tripe is served up in Windows Media Player, but as I had to download a whole new 50 Mb app just to put CD tracks onto my iPod, Apple seem to have had the opportunity to do that “right thing” that you’re supposed to be experts at. Guys, you missed it!
Back in the user interface of the player itself, if I’m playing an album in that old fashioned “track 1, then track 2, then track 3″ way, I sometimes wonder what track’s coming up next. Finding out means MENU click, move down to Music, and select it, move to and select Albums. Now find the album that’s currently playing (for which you have to remember what it’s called - there’s nothing else to tell you which album is currently playing). Select it, find the little icon that shows which track is playing, and then read the line below. Then repeat most of this tedious operation backwards to return to where you were. Back in the stone age, you just picked up the record sleeve and looked. Even worse, someone at Apple decided to use a huge chunk of screen space for the album cover pic that I don’t bother downloading. “Next track: Ruhe, Meine Seele” - that’s all we need. Far more useful than a pic of a couple of quavers/eighth-notes.
The there's the joyous discovery that having not spotted the opportunity at some point in initial set-up, I'm stuck with that boring name "Owner's iPod" for the rest of the products life.

I apologise for that. Your conviction sounded so strong I thought it a shame to try to correct you.
To be a bit more helpful, you can select multiple tracks and set their album (along with various other properties) all at once. In the same way, you can set the "disc number" for the tracks so that multiple discs are seen as part of the same album.
You can also rename the iPod as you please (though I can't remember exactly how - try right-clicking/Cmd-clicking on the iPod's name), so you're not stuck with that silly name forever.

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • 3rd Gen Headphones with Remote + iPad

I bought a pair of the apple headphones with remote online. I think they are the 3rd gen version.
I can't get the remote to work with my iPad
Anyone know if these are incompatible for some reason?

Since other users are having a problem I would say there is either a problem with the iOS or that the headphones are not fully compatible with the iOS. I now of nothing you can really do.

  • I was given a ipod nano i think it's a 3rd gen. i have windows vista and when i plug it in my computer says there are no drivers for it.... help

I was given an older ipod nano, i think it's a 3rd gen 8gb... i have searched the iternet for help and have had no luck. when i connect the ipods to my computer i tells me the usd device is not recognized. i have tried to reset it and it still gives me the samething notice. i have even uninstalled my itunes and updated to the newest itunes available and still no luck. i can not find updats for drivers. i have windows vista.. can anyone help?

Installing the latest version of iTunes should provide the "drivers."
It was definitely working properly for the person who gave it to you?  Is that person a Mac user?
I would try the following.  Shut down (power off) your computer.  Use this procedure to reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
(It's the part that says How to reset an iPod with a Click Wheel.)
Disconnect ALL USB devices and peripherals (including hubs) from computer, except for standared mouse and keyboard.  Start up computer that way.  Run iTunes.  Connect iPod to a USB port that is directly on the computer.

  • How do I make a folder in iOS4 for Ipod Touch 3rd Gen 32gb?

How do I create a folder to place apps in? I just upgraded my Ipod Touch 3rd gen, 32gb to iOS4 and I don't know how or where I go to create a folder.
The update also said I could have a home screen wallpaper. (Does this mean behind the apps?) If it does, how do I set it?

Folders: press and hold an app icon until they start to wiggle. Then drag the icon onto another icon and a folder will be created.
For Wallpapers: Go to settings>general>wallpaper>choose picture>then you can set as lockscreen, homescreen(yes behind apps), or both.

  • 3rd gen iPod nano is not correctly recognized on new Windows 7 iTunes

Moved my iTunes library from old PC to new Win7 PC via direct iTunes folder copy.
    Looked ok
but when I connect my 3rd Gen Nanos, I get dire warnings that I have to authorize new PC with my son's AppleID not mine (was originally his iPod but long since factory reset and reloaded) or else iTunes will delete purchased songs. (The new PC is authorized for my Apple Id).
I have 2 of these iPods and the other one was never my son's so I don't know why it also thinks it needs his id.
When we check my son's account and look at devices, the iPods are not listed. (maybe only newer iOS devices are listed?) So I can't "remove" the iPods from that account via the iTunes Store account profile.
yes, I have tried reinstalling iTunes and wiping the registry - no luck.  If I "cancel" when the dire warnings come up instead of authorizing using my son's account, then the iPod is not recognized at all by iTunes (does appear as external drive in Windows) and I have to reinstall .... again.
    My questions are:
    1) do the old iPods themselves some how store the original Apple ID they were associated with?
    2) If so, how can I reset to use my Apple ID?
        Will "factory reset" work?
What I don't want is to reset and then find out I can't reload using current iTunes library associated with current Apple ID
    3)  I don't think this will solve the problem but: in iTunes, can I separately sign in  with both IDs and authorize the computer with both IDs? Can a single instance/install/library of iTunes use 2 different AppleIDs? (there are not 2 users on this PC - just 1. So just 1 iTunes instance, just 1 library)
    More details:
    I tried:
If I authorize the new PC for my son's account which the ipod and Itunes seems to want, then when the iPods are connected, all the song's listed in the library in main/right pane are greyed out and can't be selected.  I don't recall this being a problem on the old PC so something seems wrong.
    I am concerned that:
If I give up and authorize this PC for both Apple Id's,  then what?  If I buy something new from iTunes (using, can I sync it to the iPod?

Never mind, I think. I think I figured it out. There was 1 song (out of > 900!) that somehow had been purchased with the other ID - I have no idea how. Once I deleted that song, it stopped asking.
There may be something with the newest iTunes version too. I didn't think in older versions that the "On this iPod" list of songs was greyed out. But at least it syncs ok.

  • Can I access my USB drive connected to 3rd Gen Extreme via the internet?

After reading the features of current Airport Extremes, it seems that one can acces their USB connected hard drive via the internet. Is this true and does that feature also exist on 3rd Gen extremes as well? If so, how do I access it via the internet?

Yes and yes. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip.

  • Can't update my iPod touch 3rd gen

So I have my 3rd gen iPod touch and i have tried to update it several times with errors telling me that iTunes timed out or with the 3091 error code (i think its the 3091 its the highest error code with 3000) and i have redownloaded itunes rebooted my computer used a different computer and i cant get it to update/ or even restore is there another way to get it to restore? I don't care if all my stuff gets deleted id rather have a fresh start anyway. I am at ios 4.3.5 and wanted to update it up to the new ios 5

You have a 2G iPod.  Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods.  When the 3G iPods were introduced, the 8GB 2G iPods were continued to be sold with the same updated iOS as the 3G ipods.  It is a common error to think that users purchased a 8GB 3G ipod.  Sorry.

I have an issue, running Windows XP and I don't have the location where the backup's are stored on my pc: Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\.  What I do have is the following: Documents and Settings\(username)\ there's a AppData folder followed by:\LocalLow\DataMngr\ .

I have tried removing itunes and all that is associated with it then reinstalling and I keep getting the same message.  I've reset my ipod thinking that would help but still, no backup.
In iTunes, Edit, Preference, Device there are no backups.

  • 3rd Gen Ipod touch 5.1.1 update grays out wifi

After updating my 3rd Gen ipod touch, I can no longer use wifi. The wifi box is grayed out. I have reset the network connection settings, and have reset the ipod back to factory settings and still nothing. I see that this has happened to lots of iphone users but havent heard much about ipod touch. I wont even think about updating my iphone until a bug fix comes out. So far Apple is saying it is a hardware issue, but theres no way. No way thousands of people are having a hardware issue just after a software update. Can anyone help?
Also now only about 20% of my songs will load on the ipod and the screen is frozen. Great

  • 3rd Gen Nano click wheel won't work in the car.  My OLD one worked, but this one doesn't.

I use a  PXDP iPod2Car iPod interface in my 02 Firebird.  My original, trusty 3rd gen. nano used to work perfectly.  It charged, and the steering wheel as well as main stereo controls operated it.  Something happened to it recently (my guess is the logic board went bad) and it does not come on at all, plugged in or not.  I actually have 2 more just like it that I was going to give away, but decided to keep.
Neither one of these will let me use the click wheel to scroll while plugged into the car - the old one did.
I can only change songs with the car's controls.
The only difference between these two and the old one, is that they have the HP logo on the back.  Are they later models, with perhaps different hardware?
Is there anything I can do about it?
Is there any hope for the old one?
I hate not being able to scroll at all!
    thanks in advance!

Contact PXDP.  They should know if their product is compatible with your iPod Nano.
Why won't my iPod play through my iPod speakers or car kit?

  • 3rd Gen 40GB iTunes Sync Issue

I have a 40GB 3rd Gen Click Wheel iPod that has functioned without a single issue since purchase in 2003. It has been a long while since I updated any of the music, so I plugged it into my computer using the firewire cable that it came with. The iPod will begin charging immediately, but when I open iTunes (latest 8.2 version) it will not recognize that there is an iPod connected. I've tried this on both my PC (XP) and my Powerbook (10.4) with the same results. I've tried the Menu/Play button reset, also putting it into Disk Mode. I would appreciate any info/suggestions, since I'm stuck with my playlist from 2005!

I'm having the same problem. Trying to use my old 3G 20 gig iPod to dedicate to my car stereo which has a usb port, supporting the iPod interface. Works fine via usb but wont charge. Is there an usb to firewire adapter so I can use my old firewire dock cable? Or is it a voltage issue? I hate when standards change. I understand that USB gives apple a greater potential market, but come on! The old stuff should still work!

  • Apple TV 3rd Gen no longer sees Airport Express 1st gen in Airplay after update

Apple TV 3rd gen was connected to AirPort Express 1st gen via WiFi, drove a video device via HDMI
and sent audio to the AirPort using Airplay and selecting the AirPort Express under Speakers.
I could adjust the volume with the AppleTV remote.
Apple TV was stored unused for a while.
After powering on yesterday, I ran the update.
Now Apple TV is connected to the Airport Express via WiFi
but Airport Express doesn't show in AirPlay settings.
I can still use AirPlay from my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
There are no updates available for the AirPort

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.
