3rd generation 15GB ipod will not boot

My third(3rd) generation 15GB iPod (A1050) will not boot. First it felt like the battery was just dead. Resetting the iPod using menu+play for 6 seconds gives me the apple logo and then the battery w/triangle/exclamation point error. I tried a new battery but that didn't change anything. I tried charging it using AC and USB, but that didn't seem to help... I don't have a firewire cable so I can't try that.
Finally I tried to boot the iPod without the battery. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be able to do that. Well, this one doesn't so I'm not sure if I've exonerated the battery or if I just have a red herring.
Visual inpection of the inside looks like all the cables are connected firmly and I don't see any obvious broken solder joints.
Another point is that when I plug the iPod into my usb drive the WinXP machine doesn't see it. I use the same WinXP machine to synch with a 1 month old Nano so I know that usb port works and I do have itunes loaded.
Any advice on what I can try next?

I have had basically the exact same problem.
Question: I bought mine used off of Craigslist, and I think what the seller didn't mention is that this model comes with a Cradle or 'Dock' or whatever you call it. Did you buy yours used as well? I think we may need to look into buying a dock and being mad at whoever sold it to us without one.

  • 3rd Generation, 15g Ipod- Will Not Charge- HELP

I have a 3rd generation, 15g Ipod- I keep it for nostalgia purposes but I can't get it to charge.
    It has a new battery.
I'm extremely frustrated at my experience with Apple. Technology changes so fast (i've owned it 7years) that no one seems to know or care to assist me either at the Apple 800 number or in the Apple store.
I have the original Ipod but not the cradle or anything else that I can find. We have purchased so many Ipods over the years.
So I have been told that if the battery gets to low I must charge it with the a wall adaptor. So today I purchase a new wall adaptor but it won't charge the ipod. Plugging into my 2 year old Imac won't charge it either. Is there another way to charge the Ipod?
I just received it back with a new battery. It was 1/4 charged and Imac recognized it perfectly. I just think the battery got too low and needs to be charged another way. HEEEEEELPP!

    Hi,
I just think the battery got too low and needs to be charged another way. HEEEEEELPP!
No. You're lucky that the battery went for 7 years. They do not last forever.

  • After upgrading my MacBook Pro, my 3rd generation i-pad will not charge.  It says the accessory (the charger) may not be supported.

After upgrading my MacBook Pro, my 3rd generation i-pad will not charge.  The device says, "this accessory (the charger) may not be supported.  My i-phone 5 charged just fine.  Thanks.

    iPad: Charging the battery
    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • HT202118 my 3rd generation apple tv will not come on just a white flashing light my first generation one is working fine? tried unplugging it nothing, any help is much appreciated.

my 3rd Generation Apple TV will not come just a white flashing light i tried unplugging it for 30 seconds nothing tried the menu button and down arrow that did help as well and suggestion? Thank you I'm not very tech savvy.

Click on the blue link I gave.  You would need to hook it to a computer running iTunes using a microUSB lead.
If you have an Apple Store nearby take it there and see if they can sort it out.
It is possible the display resolution is wrong - you could try holding menu and up arrow on remote together for 6 seconds which will make it cycle display resolutions - but only if it is actually working but showing a black screen due to wrong resolution selected.

  • Why does my 3rd generation 8gb ipod touch not pick up on ios 5 update?

Why does my 3rd generation 8gb ipod touch not pick up on ios 5 update?

I know you are not apple though I believe I still have apoint. As you can see the release date for these two iPod touches is differentby about a year. My iPod was sold as an apple iPod touch 8 GB third generation, and as I can see from this page and many others have experienced this. I wouldcomplain to apple though there seems to be no actual way to do this withouthaving to fork out for additional support, which is unacceptable also my iPodwas bought form a reliable UK retailer. It is not just the seller who names itas a 3rd generation I have also included a print screen of a trade in offerfrom a large phone shop site:

  • IPod Touch 3rd Generation 32 GB will not charge, sync, nor turn on

I've had this iPod since about January/February 2010. I've had this issue ever since May 20th, 2012 .When I plug it into an adapter, it shows the very low battery red sign, and when it is plugged in, it shows that it is charging. However, when it reaches the silver apple logo when an iPod turns on, it is stuck on the logo, so it does not turn on. When I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it does not show up under the devices column. Therefore, I am not able to backup or update my data, which is my first priority. I really want to be able to backup my data. I've gone to numerous Apple Support Communites pages and numerous apple support pages, and none have helped me. i've tried to reset my iPod, but I do not want to restore it and go into recovery mode because I do not want to lose my data. The two problems I think that I have is either the battery has died and can no longer charge or the charging dock is somehow broken. I've already used different adapters and different computers to charge it from. I really do not want to buy a new iPod, and if so, I would like to backup my data first. My iPod has not been jailbroken. Any suggestions?

See my response to your other post. Double posting does not help.

  • Using 3rd Generation 15GB iPod With A New MacBook

I just found a 15GB 3rd generation click wheel iPod at a thrift store. It works - there's a tiny amount of juice left in it, so I can scroll through menus and so forth, but when I connect it to my MacBook 2.1 via the connector cable, something odd happens. I get the "Do Not Remove" symbol and text for a few seconds, then a blank screen, then the Apple logo for about fifteen seconds. The the "Do Not Remove" symbol, then the Apple logo, and so forth, repeating. The iPod hard drive is clicking all the while. And during the whole thing, the iPod isn't recognized by my MacBook - the icon doesn't appear on my hard drive, and it doesn't appear in the latest version of iTunes.
Do I need to be running an older version of iTunes, or have another type of connector cable?

A 3rd gen iPod needs to be connected by FireWire. It will not charge over USB (although it may connect over USB if the battery is fully charged). Therefore, your MacBook must have a FireWire port and you need to use a FireWire docking cable.
However, the clicking sound and the repeated Apple logo cycle may indicate that the iPod's hard drive is faulty.
You do not need an older version of iTunes. My 3G iPod works fine with the latest version of iTunes on my Intel iMac.

If the battery died then you will have to replace the battery and then see if you can get the data off the iPod. Otherwise you will have to try restoring the iPod and lose the data.
You can try a third-party place like the following.

You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • I have a iPod touch 3rd generation and it will not turn on or charge.

This iPod, when ever I turn it on all I get is the apple logo. Then about five minuts later, it tells me to plug it up, you know, the low battery simbole. But the kicker is that it is always pluged up when it is doing this! Can you tell me how to restor this iPod? I've tried force recovery but I discontinued it from my account. I've heard if you plug up to a computer it will charge better, didn't work. Thanks for helping me. Cameron44

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod will not boot up

Hi, I've been having a problem booting up my iPod, as in getting it to turn on, for about a week now. Everytime I go to use it, the apple logo flashes and I hear the battery starting to turn on; however, it abruptly stops, and the sad iPod face appears. Is my battery expired? Or is there something else wrong with the iPod? Thanks.

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? It may be of some help:iPod displays a sad iPod icon

  • Ipod will not boot

So I've recently been given an old Ipod and my friend used a mac to transfer files. I have a pc, so when I plugged in the ipod for the first time it told me I had to download the update to view my files. I download the newest updater and tell it to wipe my ipod in hopes that I will be able to acess it. After I wipe it it says to plug it into an ac outlet.
After I do this I get the apple screen and then a picture of the usb connection (other end of it that goes in the ipod)and an arrow pointing away from it.
I followed the directions exactly and am a very savy computer person so I am puzzled to what went wrong.
Could someone plz help me! Thank you very much.

Not sure what it meant by salvaged...but buying iPods from ebay since the 2nd gen nano's came out (and likely before) has been a "Do At Own Risk" situation. There have been numerous reports of fake iPods being sold. You may have been sold one that is a lemon. I would think they would have listed it as a warranty replaced iPod if that was what it was....salvaged makes me wonder if they attempted to fix it themselves.

  • 5th generation 16GB iPod will not sync with nike + can anyone help me?

after my nano was reseted due to bad functioning, i restore it and now  it can't  send information to nike + , all i now is that the runs are saved in the ipod nano
and when i try to connect to nike + it say the following: itunes could not connect to nike +The network connection timed out. make sure your network settings are correct and your network connections is active, then try again

Hmmm it won't let me check when it is CONNECTED to the puter.
What? So if you have your iPod plugged into iTunes and you click on it from under the Devices category in the left hand pane of iTunes you should be on the iPod's Summary tab. From there you can navigate to the Podcasts tab where you can set your iPod up to sync podcasts.
If you are unable to do so, it maybe a good idea to restore your iPod via iTunes. Then, upon setting it up, navigate to this same tab and set your iPod up to sync podcasts however you wish.
Here is more on syncing Podcasts to your iPod if need be.

  • Ipod will not turn on or charge

Hello there!! I've never done this before so hear it goes...
My ipod (5th generation video ipod) will not respond when I push any of the buttons.
    The hold button is off.
I've tried to reset it but the computer will not reconize it. All the software is up to date.
I would have gone thru all of the 5 R's if I could turn my ipod on.
I hooked my ipod on to the charger with no response.
This situation is sounding pretty hopeless. I hope someone can help and tell me otherwise?
    Help me pretty please??
    Thanks in advance...

    Try these.

My ipod will not let me use all but like 3 apps fully without closing me out of the app and i can only use safari or the app store for about 10 seconds without it shutting down the app. This has been happening for about 6 months after the upgrade to ios 4. Please help, should i take my ipod to an apple store?? It is a ipod 2nd generation itouch with ios 4.

We won't know until you try the procedure.   The reset will not affect the content of the iPod.
