3rd Generation ipod - Folder with exclamation icon

I have had a 3rd generation 20g ipod for a number of years. Recently I switched it on and it showed the folder and exclamation icon and the device was frozen. I have been on every site and carried out every listed procedure but the device remains frozen. I have removed the battery and hard disk but when reconnected the problem still remains. Under Mycomputer the computer is not seeing the ipod so I cannot reformat it. I recently took the hard disk to a specialist and his device could see and read and play music files from the hard disk. Even when the hard disk is disconnected the ipod shows the folder and exclamation mark. Have I a problem with the Firmware and if so can it be shocked out of its current seizure! Is there any point formatting the disk separately and then reconnecting in the ipod. Running out of options starting to get desparate

That topic linked above that was posted here also includes some interesting advice: bang the right side of your iPod firmly against your hand or a desk. Try it out, because that worked for people on here!

3rd Generation iPod continually shows apple icon, it does not mount and cannot be seen via disk utility - despite being reset, recharged (on dock but doesn't show charge icon just the apple), cables tested/exchanged, battery swapped out with another. Let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try again.
If still not successful that indicates an hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It is also a problem with POP3, not just IMAP. This seems to be widespread. My MAC Mail was working fine until the 10.10.1 update. Geek Squad Agents spent almost 8 hours trying to figure this out and get me up and running again. They did EVERYTHING! And I do mean EVERYTHING (a shout out to them for going above and beyond with this!) Nothing worked. It seems that no changes were made to MAC MAIL in the upgrade and it is still the version used in Mavericks. It also seems that it is NOT compatible with the 10.10.1 upgrade and therefore the PLIST file becomes corrupt even with a re-build (we re-built mine 2 times). They recommended a complete reinstall of 10.10.1, but due to the holiday selling season I'm going to wait until JAN to take my computer in to Best Buy for this. I'm also hoping that Apple will send out an update fixing this issue before then. In the mean time, they have installed Mozilla Thunderbird (a free open source mail app) so that I can send and receive email via my computer!
Apple will need to fix this but until them I'm recommending anyone with this problem try a complete reinstall or use another email application on their computer.

I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

This actually removed the Safari icon off my itouch and still wifi is completely grayed-out. Has Apple removed the wifi capabilities to force the purchase of new items?

Folder with exclamation point on ipod - freezes if trying to restore

i have quite a peculiar problem with my ipod 5th gen video. i just got it in the mail yesterday and tried to make it work. when i started it up, there was a folder with an exclamation point on it. so i installed the software from the cd and plugged it in, the ipod starts charging but nothing else happens.
so i started reading all the help files on the support page, and tried everything, from reinstalling the software, to running the ipod in diskmode.
everytime the ipod is recognized by either the update software or windows as a drive, it freezes. so i reset it, try again and the **** thing freezes again
i am at a loss here, it ***** that a lot of people here seem to have the same problem and that apple does nothing at all...
well i' will wait 2 days for an answer on here and then send it in to be replaced

Connecting ipod to computer causes folder with exclamation point

Alright, my ipod works fine until I plug it into my computer, at which point itunes and possibly the whole computer will freeze up for a good 10 minutes, and the computer will try to recognize the device. The computer recognizes the device, and tries to autoplay it, however trying to open the ipod or perform any action on it (e.g. format it) will cause my computer and explorer.exe to freeze
I followed the directives here, http://www.zolved.com/guruconnect/showexchange/1086/It_has_the_folder_with_the_exclamation_point_on_the_screen_,
which told me to uninstall itunes, restart, clear the temp files, and then reinstall. This worked for a few hours and I was updating my ipod. It was taking forever to sync, and when I manually switched off my monitor to go to bed I heard the series of beeps indicating a device had been removed. I found the error had reared its ugly head.
Once the folder with exclamation point appears, the ipod will continually reset itself. 5 or 6 resets later, the ipod will function normally again until I plug it in to the computer, and the cycle starts over again.
What I have tried:
Restoring - as I said fixed until I plug into my computer
Formatting - "
Using it on my brother's Mac- it will recognize the ipod, and say it needs to be restored, however cannot restore it due to a 1419 (I think) error. After formatting it on the mac, it worked fine until plugged into the pc.
Im fairly sure that the problem lies with somethingon my computer. Does anyone have any idea what the culprit could be? Any help would be much appreciated, this finnicky ipod is making me want to tear my hair out!

I notice your sig says you have a Sony Vaio. The Sony Media Watcher program is known to cause conflicts of deleting itunes libraries - not your specific problem, I understand, but I wonder if this is some new fun feature that is somehow related?
If you have ever run the Sony media software, it is "watching" the itunes folders. Try telling it not to watch the itunes folder temporarily and see if things work better. Or even uninstall it, considering Sony came out with that fab rootkit ; 0

iOS 5 is compatible with a 3G (as well as 4G) iPod. However, if you are stuck with 4.2.1 that indicates that you really have a 2G iPod. those can only go to 4.1.2. See:

3rd generation iPod with Apple Universal Dock?

I have a 3rd generation iPod, the one with touch buttons (not touch screen). The new Apple Universal Dock will run with that iPod model? I know that I won't be able to see videos on a TV because my iPod doesn't play video, but should I'll be able to charge it and sync it with the computer and connect it to the hifi stereo? The Apple Remote could run as well?

I don't see why it wouldn't, unless its for some reason imcompatible with FireWire.
The Apple Store doesn't list it on the compatible iPods list, but I believe that is for 2 reasons: 1) They want you to buy a new, video-capable iPod and 2) It doesn't come with a dock adaptor designed to fit the 3rd gen.

Have you tried connecting the device to iTunes in recovery mode and restoring it? See this article for instructions on getting your iPod into recovery mode.

Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.
Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
I personally havent looked for any clones of Words With Friends, but I bet you can find something.

All you have to do is connect the iPod to our computer and update via iTunes. You do not have to seperately erase and restore the iPod. That is done automatically as part of the update process.
To update see:
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
You need iTunes 10.5 or later on the computer. Y will go to iOS 5.1.1. the last update fopr the 3G
