3rd generation ipod wont sync with Itunes

My ipod is a 3rd generation and my software version is 1.1.3 (the newest available). It says that it is connected to itunes, starts to sync, but nothing happens. I have tried every step of the troubleshooting guide for my ipod 3rd generation. Now I just have an ipod with all of this memory space that won't sync. I did the last step which required me to restore to factory setting and still, nothing. Please help!

That is a 4th gen iPod, and it should work with a USB port (or a FireWire port).
If you have not done a standard Restore on the iPod using iTunes, you may want to do that next.  The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  So, if the cause is related to software (or data corruption), and there is no hardware issue, a Restore should fix it.
WARNING:  The 4th gen iPod (when used on a USB port) will ask that you connect it to a USB power adapter as the last step in the Restore process.  These white square power adapters originally came with this model.  If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, you will not be able to complete the Restore, and the iPod will become non-functional.  So don't do it unless you have one.  A third-party power adapter may or may not work for this purpose.  The USB port on your computer does not work for this purpose.

    Hey Biglou1,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your iPod nano(3rd generation) is not recognized in iTunes. The following troubleshooting assistant may provide a resolution:

  • Ipod touch 3rd generation does not sync with itunes 12

I upgraded iTunes to iTunes 12 and now my 3rd generation 64GB iPod Touch does not sync but 8 songs, even though the entire library is checked.  I had removed all songs to reorganize the iPod but afterwards I was no longer able to re-sync the iPod Touch.  A restore from previous was pointless because all the songs had already been removed.  I ended up restoring the iPod Touch to factory settings and I still cannot sync any songs.

Do the non-syncing songs play in iTunes on the computer?
What exactly happens when you try to sync?
Can you sync apps or photos to the iPod?

First and foremost when we plug it into her windows XP laptop and open the latest version of itunes, which we uninstalled and reinstalled the message "The software required for this ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes to install the required software." which we allready did. I also did everything in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US but when i selected the usbappl file as the driver it didnt reconize it as a driver. I also ran itunes dianostics and restarted the apple mobile device service and fixed all other issues. The ipod shows up fine in the windows explorer any help is appreciated.

Sumiko, I'd suggest you start a new topic with your issue (use the "Post a new topic" link at the top of each main topic page). It's generally better to ask a question as a new topic rather than as a reply in someone else's thread. It's more courteous to the original poster, and is more likely to get your question the attention it deserves.
    Regards.

  • IPod wont sync with iTunes. Error Message occurs.

I just updated to the latest version of iTunes and when i try to sync my iPod i get the message "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed properly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod software." I tried this and it would not redownload because i already have the newest version. I also tried doing what Apple reccomended by deleting itunes, afterwards itunes would not download so i did a system restore so now everytime i open up itunes "Windows has to configure iTunes." What can i do to fix this problem? It is really upsetting me.

In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

  • After restoring ipod nano it wont sync with itunes. states error 13019 occured

after restoring ipod nano it wont sync with itunes. states error 13019 occured

I seem to recall that another user has this problem and found that it was because of some corrupted music files they were trying to sync over.
Try syncing smaller bunches of tracks till you come upon the ones that cause the error. You should be able to find out which ones are causing the trouble this way.
The other user said they used something called MP3Diags. I cannot vouch for this software at all, I have never used it.
I did a quick search on "how to repair MP3 files on Mac" and also found this:
