3rd generation not charging connected to USB

My 3rd generation not charging when connected to the USB2 / firewire port. Does this imply the battery is dead ? It does change with the AC adaptor but seems to die pretty quickly afterwards.

Neil,
Are you sure that the 3G iPod can charge via the USB?
When your computer shuts down, the FW and USB ports shut down and, if your iPod is connected, the iPod battery will drain. There are a few things you can try:
reset, several times
update the firmware
calibrate the battery and the battery meter

I got the ipod about 4 years ago and now it doesnt charge any more. If I want to charge it I have to push up or down but I only did that once because I dont want to damage it any more. Also awhile ago There was a little piece that came out of the charging spot in the ipod. Could I just get it repaired or something. If someone could help me that would be great.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" Maverick issue!

Ever since we updated to mavericks our deployment of 60 iPad's flashes "iPad not charging Connect to a power adapter or a USB port on this mac to charge" on the screen every time one is plugged in. It is a false alarm because the iPad does in fact trickle charge and it does update the device like it is supposed to. At this point it's more of an annoyance then an actual problem. However I would like it to stop popping up every time one is plugged in.
Does anybody have any ideas to stop it?

Your computer USB port typically provides only 2.5W of power. iPads require 10-12W of charging power. That's why you get the "Not Charging" message. However, the iPad is charging, but much slower. There's no way to stop it.

  • IPod 3 rd generation not charging

I have an iPod 3rd generation it charges with a power charger but not with the special cord for iPod in my car?
    Any ideas?

Is it a third gen "classic" iPod with a "touch" wheel (not click wheel) and four touch buttons (that glow orange) in a row between the wheel and screen?
If it is, that iPod is designed to use a FireWire connection.  It does not change from a USB connection, like later iPods.  Therefore, my guess for why charging in the car does not work is that the "special cord" is only supplying power to the "pins" in the dock connector for USB charging, not FireWire charging.

My iPod was working fine and then my oldest son put in a flash drive to download some music and now my iPod will not connect to iTunes.
Doublechecking something. Are you still back at SP2 for your XP? Or do you have SP3 in place?

  • My iPad air will not charge connected to my monitor or my computer. Why?

My iPad air will not charge connected to my monitor or my computer. Why?

Short answer:  Computer USB ports don't deliver as much power as the power adapter that comes with the iPad.
    Details:
Full size iPads come with either a 10W or 12W power adapter.  The mini comes with a 5W power adapter.
See iPhone, iPad, iPod: Using iPad Power Adapters
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327
    USB ports on computers deliver 2.5W (USB 2, 500mA x 5v) or 4.5W (USB 3, 900mA x 5v).
Newer Macs with high power ports can deliver 5.5W (1100mA x 5v).
See Apple Computers and Displays: Powering peripherals through USB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049
If you connect your (full size) iPad to a computer USB port, it may charge slowly, but since it's getting less than half the normal charging power, it may say "not charging".  It may charge slowly or it may not depending on use (screen brightness, processor load, etc.).  If you really want to charge it from the computer, put the iPad to sleep.
The best charging solution is to use the Power Adapter that came with the iPad.

  • Iphone 4S will not charge, error that USB device not working, found any suggestions?

iphone 4S will not charge, error that USB device not working, found any suggestions?

    Hello Chambless,
The troubleshooting steps below can help get your iPhone to charge.
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

  • My iPhone 3G charges with a charger, but not when connected via USB to my computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it.

Hello, my iPhone charges when I charge it with the wall plug but not when connected to a computer via USB and my iTunes doesn't recognize my iPhone either. iTunes recognizes my iPod and iPad just fine. I have been to Apple iPhone support page and I have restarted my iPhone, the computer, tried different USB ports, etc. I have also tried my iPhone on different macs even with different versions of iTunes and no luck. This all started when I was cleaning out some lint from the usb connector, could I have damaged some part of the docking connection? But why does it charge with a wall plug then?

I fixed the problem. When I was trying to clean the connector of the iPhone I must have bent some pins. I have straightened them to the best of my ability and now it syncs. If your iPhone charges, but doesn't sync, most likely you have a similar problem, because the iPhone doesn't need all of its pins to charge, but it does need all of them to sync.

  • 3rd generation not syncing

I just got a 3rd generation iPod, and it's not syncing with my computer. The usb I'm using is from my old 4th generation iPod. The iPod is fully charged, and makes a whirring sound when I plug it in, but it's not showing up on the computer as plugged in.
    dell inspiron 6400   Windows XP

That's the problem. 3rd generation iPods used a different type of connection developed by Apple called Firewire. Data transfer speeds between USB2 and Firewire were similiar but Firewire is a more reliable connection than USB2 and it was easier to diagnose than USB2. Come 5th generation iPods, Apple dropped Firewire in favor of USB2. 4th generation iPods can use Firewire, too. To answer your question, you need to get a PCI firewire card for your computer in order to use the 3rd gen iPod. The Adaptec 4300 is the recommended card for the iPod.

  • Ipod 1st generation not charging

    Hi,
I've an ipod shuffle (1st generation) that is not charging, the shuffle is seen by my system and I was able to update it 1.1.4 firmware version today( I also restored it), but when the shuffle is connected to the high-power USB port it lights with the amber light to indicate that it's charging. However it never turns green and on removing it after >4hrs there is no activity from it and the battery indicator light does not light. It is out of warranty now so I was thinking of replacing the battery myself, however the fact that it's not charging at all would give me doubts that it may not be the battery and might be related to the circuit board.
    Anybody seen this symptom before?
    Paddy

  • IPod touch 4th Generation not charging.

I have had my iPod touch 4th Generation for 3 weeks, after having to buy a new one because i was refused by anyone to have my old iPod 4th Generation fixed as its screen wouldn't work
Anyway, last night my iPod was charging fine when i went to sleep, but after i went to sleep it had obviously stopped charging during the night as it had red battery
I have tried charging it in the computer, docking station and a plug in the wall but neither of them work, i have even tried changing the USB cable and nothing will work
Any ideas of how to fix this? I've seen many complaints on here about it but no one knows how its happened to their iPod because it just happens
My iPod is now completely off because it wont charge and the battery is dead so i cant get onto my iPod to do anything
    Help please?

See the not charging topic of:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
Also look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bend or corroded contacts, foreign material and crack or broken plastic.
