3rd-party MagSafe adapter almost caught fire!

OK, long story short, I was using my 13-inch MacBook just fine. I have been using this 3rd-party power adapter for a month or two after the original stopped working:
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/lovemacs_2219_691224488
Things were still going fine, until suddenly just a little while before I began typing this, I noticed the green LED blinking yellow and smoke coming from it! Of course I panicked, shut off the power to the strip it was connected to, unplugged it and pulled out the power cord. The MacBook itself is OK, and the MagSafe port on it looks fine. The MagSafe connector itself looks fine; no frays on the wire, no burn marks on the connector itself, etc.; but now I'm afraid to re-plug it in (this might be the safest option.)
Any recommendations? Should I take my MacBook to an Apple Store? Or should I just go and buy a "real" 60w MagSafe power adapter?

buy an Apple branded adapter, you can often find them used on eBay etc..  3rd party adapters tend to be of less quality.  Lesson learned.

  • Power adapter almost caught fire today, what should I expect from Apple??

I had been having some little niggles with my adaptor over the last week or two. It started of with the cable being lose, and dropping the charge at the slightest movement, this was rather irritating, as I no battery, due to the recall. The problem continued and got worse. For the last few days, the charger has failed to work at all at some times, and at others, the power has been flickering on and off.
But today, I picked up the charger, and it started sparking, with smoke coming out of it!!
    I imediatly unplugged it.
Considering this computer is only 1 year old, I am very angered at having a, quite frankly, rather dangerous and unusable charger. And since I have about 40mins left till my laptop is unusable, I need a new charger, quick!
I hope Apple will replace my charger, free of charge (pardon the pun) as it is unreasonable for the charger to last this long. I am unsure if I am still covered by my warrenty, I bought the laptop about a year ago.
I will be a VERY angry customer if Apple does not fix the problem!!
Take this as a warning - the Powerbook power adaptors can become dangerous!

Whilst browsing, I came across this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2569334&#2569334
I have been having the same problems, and that could have been the cause of my charger shorting and almost cathing fire - be warned!

  • 3rd Party AC-Adapter Question

I bought a 3rd Party AC-Adapter for my iPhone and I have a quick question.
I know the iPhone is required to charge w5 volts and not more, but it says on the box that the *Output DC* is 12V, but it also says 5V DC (regulated). Is this okay? Can I trust it to charge my iPhone? Will it affect the battery meter in anyway?

Apple was very slow to license its proprietary MagSafe connector to other manufacturers, though it appears they've finally done so now. For the longest time, it was just impossible to find anyone selling third-party MagSafe adapters, and those who did were clearly buying Apple adapters at full price and cutting the plugs off them. It made their products exorbitantly expensive. That's no longer the case; you can find junk MagSafe adapters online now for less than $25. I wouldn't buy one, but you may want to consider that option.

  • 3rd Party SCORM Adapter

I'm wondering if anyone has implemented a 3rd party SCORM adapter with OLM? We have run into performance issues with the integrated SCORM Adapters ability to stream voice. Our courses are currently created with UPK - with voice - and are VERY large in size. Unfortunatley, UPK only supports WAV files at this time which is unfortunately a very large voice file with minimal to no compression.
We are experiencing tremendous slowdown deliverying this content with our existing OLM infrastructure. We had an OLM Architect completely review our implementation to assure accurate configuration and the result was that all was configured correctly - but the SCORM adapter doesn't efficiently stream the voice. Our experience has shown that each page takes approximately 175Kbp per page to bring down the voice (this compares to a 28Kbp voice call)....you can see the HUGE difference. '
Before I start researching other adapters for OLM - interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this same problem and potential resolutions.
NOTE: We are currently deployed with a single content server accessed over the WAN but are heavily considering local content servers...the issue becomes accurate replication and assuring every content server has the same "instance of the truth"....we would be deploying 18 content servers worldwide so I think you can see the concern here.
Of course and easy solution is no voice....but not the desired outcome.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Lisa

    Lisa,
The SCORM Adapter has nothing to do with it. The SCORM adapter is simply an HTML frameset surrounding the content. The issue sounds like the content server machine more than anything else.

  • Airport card vs ethernet vs 3rd party usb adapter.

Hello, I hope someone here can help. I have a G4 tower 8493 and purchased Airport Extreme so I can connect an iPad. After reading tons of support questions it looks like I have 3 options. Purchase an airport card and give up some speed, connect G4 directly to airport exteme with ethernet or purchase a 3rd party usb adapter.
First - are those options correct?
    Second - which is better/stable?
Third - if ehernet is chosen, what exactly would I buy and where would this cable go?
Thanks so much in advance, I really have no idea what I should do.

    Hello,
The Airport 802.11b card & the USB Wifi adapter limited by USB1.1 speeds will have about the same theoretical limit of speed, but I get far better range & speed using the USB adapters, & the USB adapters can do WPA2, which Airport cannot.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/MXP2802GU2/
Another option is a PCI card, more expensive, but more speed...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/N80211PCI/
Not sure if this cheaper one works on G4s, I'd ask them...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
You have a built-in Ethernet port, but make sure it works before going that route.
I'd chose the USB Wifi myself.

  • 3rd-party AC adapter for Powerbook and Macbook?

Looking into buying an AC adapter to keep at a 3rd location I'm spending a lot of time at. My current Powerbook won't live forever, so I'll probably be getting a Macbook (Pro) in a future that's nearer and nearer, and thus it'd be great if I could feed a future laptop off the same adapter. There are lots of adapters to work with whole collections of laptops, but for now I haven't found a single one that comes with the connectors for both a Powerbook and a Macbook. Are these models that different in their power requirements?

Apple was very slow to license its proprietary MagSafe connector to other manufacturers, though it appears they've finally done so now. For the longest time, it was just impossible to find anyone selling third-party MagSafe adapters, and those who did were clearly buying Apple adapters at full price and cutting the plugs off them. • 3rd Party Power Adapter that works properly?

My original Apple power adapter has failed like many others do prematurely - the cord breaks down where it enters the block. I bought a 3rd party adapter from ebay (a Delta electronics one, in white and wearing official Apple markings) Although it is a 65w, when my 15" PB battery flattened, and went to sleep, the power adapter failed to start it up again until the battery had had chance to recharge some. So, this adapter is no good, and is going back to the seller. Does anyone know of a cheaper (Apple's own is ridiculously expensive at nearly £60) adapter that really does work with the PowerBook? By "work" I mean will it start up the machine from flat-battery-induced sleep.
Many thanks - if not, it looks like I'll have to pay for another Apple-Short-Life Charger!
    Cheers

I have used three different adaptors, other than Apple's. Unless you are lucky, I suspect you will get what you pay for. Try:
    http://www.psaparts.co.uk/ (1)
http://www.laptopshop.co.uk (2) I addition I have used Kensingtons fancy brick. Note they have adaptors for aircraft etc so make sure you get the right one.
I have just got and started using a 90W device from "(2)" I like having the spare power and that you can buy extra tips. For 90W and changeable tips (only one supplied as standard) the basic price of £45 plus VAT seems OK. They have smaller power devices.
The adaptor from "(1)" also has spare capacity and kept a Titanium (I know it needs less) alive for days. I have never had to start from a completely dead battery but the power is there with both.
The best supply I have is a Sagem powering my fax. It has been on for two years. I am reconciled to all these supplementary heating devices. My fridge does the same.

  • How do I get a 3rd party WiFi adapter to be recognized as default WiFi?

I have a really great USB WiFi adapter that unfortunately does function the same as the PCI-e WiFi adapter. Essentially I have to connect to networks with the software that came with the adapter (which is really good) and I cannot use the status bar WiFi icon. This isn't much of an issue but unfortunately this means that AirDrop does not recognize this device either. I must turn on the PCI-e adapter (which is practically broken) to use AirDrop. Is there a way that I can make my USB adapter (Alfa AWUS036NHR using Realtek RTL8192C chipset) act as an integrated adapter?
    I realize that
    defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
will get AirDrop to work on all interfaces, but I'm really wondering if I can make Mac accept my adapter as "WiFi" under networks

Something.....a Mac or PC will need to have a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed on the computer.
Perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule by powering it off for a few minutes. Then, hold in the reset button first and keep holding for an additional 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Time Capsule. Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for  the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open up AirPort Utility on the computer, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to type in a device name and password that you want to use for the Time Capsule, set Time Zone, etc.
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab
Hold down the option or Alt key while you click on the Wireless Mode setting box
Select the Join a wireless network setting
Select the name of the wireless network
Enter the password for the wireless network
    Verify the password
Click Update to save the settings
Note....everything here assumes that the router that provides the wireless network is using WPA2 Personal security, which is the default setting for the Time Capsule.

  • 3rd party wifi adapter?

Hi everyone.  I have an old macbook pro which is still a great machine except the wifi doesn't work.  I've had it serviced and it's just non functional, period.   It still works wonderfully well when wired into ethernet port.  I have purchased a macbook air, but I'd still like to use my macbook pro wirelessly if possible.
Does anyone know of a usb/dongle type of product that I can plug in to connect the old girl wirelessly?  It's a Macbook Pro1,1, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, OS-X 10.6.8
    Thanks!

Any ideas? Picture shows InSSIDer not recognizing my USB Wi-Fi adapter and the Chromecast setup app not recognizing it either. However, it's setup correctly in Network Preferences and I have a full connection.

  • POWER ADAPTER HAS JUST CAUGHT FIRE!!!

While sitting using my 15' powerbook g4 i noticed a strange burning smell. At closing the screen i realized what it was, the power adapter had caught fire at the part where the cable enters the brick.
This could have been disastrous if i wasn't here when it happened. The adapter hasn't moved much in the 3 years I've had it, only 3 times i think so it couldn't be ware and tare.
Has anyone else come across this problem and have you had any luck getting a replacement from Apple? Typically my apple care has just ran out 2 weeks ago!!
    Owb

Same problem here, a few weeks ago. There was a burning smell, then smoke from the joint between the cable and the cable head (with the green/orange light on it). Called Apple, and the chap i got on the phone, when asked, stated no, they don't have any policies on their products catching fire once the 1 year warranty has passed. I rang again and got another chap who seemed a little less sure of himself, so I went at him a bit down the phone, and managed to get an engineer in Sweden?? Eventually they offered to replace the cable.
I guess if your prepared for the phone bills, just keep ringing and shouting until one of the goons on the other end will do something about it.

  • Recommendations for 3rd party AC adapters?

In the year that we've had this powerbook we've gone through 2 Apple brand AC adapters (one broke where the cord meets the brick - smoking! and the other one broke where the cord meets the notebook - sparking!) and we bought a 3rd party replacement from Other World Computing only to have the little pin fall off into the computer's charger port. Twice.
So I'm looking for a well-made (above all else) but hopefully cost effective 3rd party replacement adapter. Recommend away!

    Hi,
I got a the MCE PORTABLE AC POWER ADAPTER FOR POWERBOOK G4 in december to use with my 15" g4 1.67. Works great except for no color ring indicating charging it is white though, which matches the original color scheme and for $40 from clubmac.com, it proved to be one of the better deals around at the time I think.
    Good Luck!

  • Receiver Axis Adapter to 3rd party webservice

    Hi,
My scenario is ABAP Proxy --> PI --> 3rd party webservice using Soap Adapter with Axis protocal.
I'm getting the following error when attempting to post to the 3rd party web service:
nested exception is: java.net.SocketException: Connection timed out:could be due to invalid address
We do have to go through a proxy server to go outside the firewall.  I'm not sure if this may be the issue, but I don't even see where you can set this in the AXIS adapter.
Can anyone shed some light on the topic?
    Thanks and regards,
    Duke

Configured as stated below, and the issue was resolved.
How can I call some service over an HTTP proxy server?
The Axis's standard and adapter's HTTPSender and CommonsHTTPSender handlers recognize the java's standard network properties (http.proxyHost, http.proxyPort, http.nonProxyHosts) for HTTP proxy setting. Please check that these System properties are correctly set at the J2EE server's System properties page. For more information on how to set Java System properties, please refer to the J2EE server's documentation (SAP Note 710146 How to change J2EE Engine JVM Settings).
    Thanks and regards,

  • IDOC as a receiver adapter in XI to 3rd party scenario

    Hi All,
I have an requirement to connect sap xi and 3rd party. the scenario as given below:
    sap ecc 6.0  --> sap xi --> 3rd party
Here ecc is sending an idoc to the 3rd party. The 3rd party is SAP certified and intelligent enough to receive and send idocs. Here I'm using a idoc adapter as a receiver adapter. In the receiver adapter I have to give a rfc destination and a port name.
My question is how to create a rfc destination for the 3rd party. and which port name we'll use in this case. Is the port name will be the 3rd party port name is yes then how I can create a port in the 3rd party system.
    Please help.
    Regards,
       Santosh

A communication channel with a receiver IDoc adapter can be created automatically for business systems that are defined in the System Landscape Directory. refer this link
    [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/42/d1a4d665c5574fa6e19784358ec948/frameset.htm]
You need to configure the receiver IDoc adapter to convert Integration Server contents from IDoc-XML to native IDoc format and to forward the IDocs to an SAP system .
you create a port and the rfc destination pointing to receiver in PI system
use tcode sm59 for creating rfc destination and IDX1 to create port and map it to  rfc destination.

  • 3rd party iPhone 5 adapter question

I recently bought the iPhone 5 from AT&T and while i was there they said something that if i were to used a 3rd party adapter to charge my phone, i would leave a electric stamp in the phone and would void out any warranty and the same thing for 3rd party cases.  Now to me, it sort of sounded like a crock to try to get me to buy thier marked up products but is there any truth to this?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok so let's work out how much I need to spend on adapters!
We have 3 iPhone 4's in the house which I would love to upgrade to iPhone 5's plus 1 ipod touch which again I would love to upgrade.
We have 1 speaker dock in the dining room, 1 in the living room and 2 upstairs! Now charging is not a problem cos I will get lightning cables with all the new devices!
All of my docks are on many occasions being used at once!
So I need £120 worth of adapters.... Which to be honest are a bit ugly and I'm not convinced will fit some of my devices!!!
I got about £400 quids worth of equiptment which is now redundant unless I spend another £120!!
I personally am only one of many whos is not happy with having to buy the adapter!
I understand the need to move with times and thik the cable is brilliant! But common I bet it only costs a fiver to make!!!

  • 3rd party adapter integration into XI

    Dear Experts
I wanted to know how 3rd party adapters are integrated into XI?

    Hi Dheer,
There many third party adapters available in market.
    One example is seeburger:
U need to follow the below steps for integration into XI:
For the same requirement you need to follow the below steps:
    1) First deploye the Std seeburger mapping provided by see burger on XI
    2) If you are using the AS2 adapter then you have to install the AS2 server on XI server.
    3) Once you install the std seeburger on SAP XI server you will see the AS2,X400,OFTPS,VAN adapter on XI ID.
    5) You need to call the std mapping in the adapter module which does the conversion from EDI to XML and XML to EDI.
if u need process then let me know I will send u the configuration threads which is required for integration.

    Brief about seeburger:
Seeburger adapters like OFTPS,AS2,X400 are used for B2B scenario where the file is coming through WAn network or mailbox. As XI dont have capability to convert the EDIFACT format file to XML the same work will be done by seeburger adapters.
The SEEBURGER Business Integration Converter (BIC) is an any-to-any format converter, used to translate EDI data and legacy data formats into XML and vice versa. It can also be used for complex, high performance XML-to-XML mappings or to interface to existing JDBC data sources.
    Supported EDI formats include:
    • ANSI
    • EDIFACT
    • INHOUSE
    • IDOC
    • XML Schema
    • XML DTD
    • CSV
    • Delimited Data
    • positional data
    • SWIFT
    • EANCOM
    and many more.
See for converting the EDI XML to EDI and XML-EDI you need to have a seeburger mapping program at the adapter module which does the conversion. For this module you need a BIC tool of seeburger which provides the different module program for EDI to XML and XML-EDI. This program needs to be deployed on XI and through adapter it has to be called for conversion.
