3rd party N card for a G5 Power Mac?

Hi all!
I am considering buying a wireless card for my G5 Power Mac. My base station is only a .11g, but I figure I might upgrade somewhere down the line, so I might as well get a .11n card for the Mac if I go this route. As near as I can tell, Apple does not sell .11n Airport Extreme cards for the G5s, and probably doesn't intend to, yes? So, can I plug a standard 802.11n PC card into one of my G5 slots and have it work fine? Does anyone have a recommendation of brand for same?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have a source.
I just walk into a computer store, in England I use Maplin for example. I goto the networking section pick up a card that is say £6 for a PCI gigabit card. I look through the plastic sleeve inside the box and can see RTL printed on the chip. So I know its a realtek chipset.
But here ya go when I googled for 'cheap NIC card' I found
Gigabit Card $9
100baseT card $3
As it has a realtek chipset it should work on your mac with no extra drivers to install.

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or 8800 GT now.
I'm looking at used ones now and wondering if 3rd party cards with those chipset above will work or,
if it has to be exactly Nvidia Geforce cards.
    Can anyone help, please?
    Thanks! ^^

Upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard and replace the GPU with Apple's ATI 5770.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Best AGP graphics card for 1st gen Power Mac G5?

    I have a dual 2Ghz 1st generation Power Mac G5 (AGP Graphics).
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO SE 256mb, but in my view it's not fast enough for sane Aperture use.
What do you recommend? I was looking at the ATI 800 XT, but surely there are newer and better ones.
Also, Is there a 850 XT onsale or was it only ever 'build to order'? I can't find it on ATI's website, they only have the 800 XT.
    Thanks

The 800xt is available from the apple store and I believe from ATI directly. Surf on over to barefeats.com and check out their performance tests on core image functions and various video cards, the 800 holds its own even with newer cards like the nvidia 7800 available as a bto in the newer G5's. The reason I believe that the 800xt is the end of the road for us AGP G5 owners is that even if we modded a newer card to work (as some out there are doing) there is a limit on the throughput, and the extra capacity goes unused. Getting the 800xt will get you through to the next generation of Powermacs-guess they will drop the power part-perhaps MacTowers-where PCI express will open up the options to whatever the PC community is putting out, with the exception of driver support I guess. But the 800 is good enough combined with 2 or more gigs of memory, and perhaps at somepoint, you might consider a RAID solution if you want to squeeze another year or so out without upgrading.

  • Best video card for Aperture with Power Mac G5

Any suggestions for a good video card to use with a 2.0 GHz dual processor G5 (AGP video). The current card is an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with 64 MB of VRAM and the performance isn't fast enough to use Aperture for image edits -- sorts and metadata updates work well enough, but something like cropping is too slow to be workable.

I looked long and hard for this card, and after waiting for months to get one, it finally arrived...DOA. I sent it back for exchange, and they had no more in stock, so my money was refunded. I looked again, and luckily found another one at a different retailer. It arrived and worked for about a month before artifacts started showing up. I sent it back to ATI for repair on December 4, and I still haven't gotten a replacement. The latest run of X800 cards that were retooled for ROHS compliance are crap. There are so many defective ones coming to their repair facility that repairs/replacements are taking more than 10 weeks.
That being said, the difference it makes in Aperture over the 9600 is significant, but not earth-shattering. For RAW images, it won't make performance great, but it will at least be tolerable compared to what it is now. There's no other video card upgrade for an AGP G5 that is worth pursuing. Still, it's a rather expensive card at about $300, and considering the quality issues and how difficult they are to find, I'd say it's not worth the hassle. Save up for a new Mac instead. One of the new Mac Pros, even the 4-core model with the Radeon HD 2600 XT, is blazingly fast in Aperture compared to a maxed-out G5.

  • Adding third party video card to P700 - no power connectors? New Power Supply Question...

    Hello,
I have a new P700 30A90012US with a 650W PSU and that didn't come with a video card. I am planning to use it as a DAW and for occasional gaming via a dual boot.
I wanted to put in a third party video card like a nVidea 970 but there aren't ANY connectors for video cards that I can find inside. The monitor I have is a 3440x1440 monitor. I have ordered a second 2609 Processor and RAM from Lenovo and have the following questions:
Once I install the second processor, how much wattage for a video card is available to me?
I understand that the 3rd party video card isn't supported but how do I attach power to it?
If it is required that I have to replace the 650 power supply with an 850, does it come with the required cable? I only see a 4 pin connector on the mobo that is unused (and I believe it is for additional hdd)
I tried searching but I am at a loss.
    Thanks,

Your config isn't really power hungry (and the 85W CPUs help a lot).  Though technically outside of the official spec, I think you could easily go to a 225W card for graphics if you had the connectors available to support it.  I'll double check the current when I get a chance, but it's probably really low risk if you want to convert your single 6-pin connector to dual 6-pin or a single 8-pin (via a dongle) to get to 225W TDP if you wanted to.
The PSU design is very modular, but unfortunately it's the aux power cable drops that kept it from being an easy field upgradable part.  I always recommend that people buy the larger PSU if they ever think they'll be doing any upgrades in the future just to make sure they are covered.
And like I said if you're comfortable working inside the system, it's not impossible to upgrade that cable drop on your own if you want to go up to the 850W.  You'd have to get the cable and PSU, but after that it would require removing the motherboard and PSU, cutting some cable ties and routing the new cable, then getting everything routed correctly such that the motherboard reinstalls cleanly.

  • 3rd party capture cards

I just got a new Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro to use with FCE, but it appears that FCE doesn't support any 3rd party capture cards.... or am I just not looking in the right place ?

You're correct. FCE does not support third party capture cards. You need FCP for that.

  • 3rd Party Email Application for CF

I know there are 3rd party email applications for CF ... Can
anyone point me to them and/or let me know if they have worked
better. I'm looking for more power with email (tracking, sending,
    routing, etc).
    Thanks,
    Joe

Yeah, that might be to much. Normally, CF will directly send
to your mailserver (usually IIS mail services) and if something
goes wrong your only options reside in looking at the CF logs if
you're logging mail. But I know there are some third party apps
that do more tracking/resending then send to your mail server (and
or better bulk mail processing). In your case you've just handled
it more complexly by using an Exchange Server. That will be
overkill for me plus a good amount of time learning and installing
    (not to mention price tag).

  • 3rd Party Plug-ins for Illustrator

EskoArtwork has a Dynamic Barcode 3rd party plug-in for Illustrator that is listed on the Adobe wesbiste for Illustrator CS6.  I puchased it and downloaded it but during the install I get a message saying it can't find a compatible Adobe Illustrator installation on my computer (I have CS6 installed).  Upon reading the information on EskoArtwork's package, it says it is only compatible with CS4, CS5 and CS5.5.  Is there a way to get this to work with CS6?  If not, I would suggest Adobe take it off their list of Plug-In's for CS6.
Also - if it is not compatible, does anyone know of a similar plug-in that would generate and insert bar codes into packaging designs?
    Thanks!

You'll probably need to ask EskoArtwork about this.
In past versions, I've been able to move plugins from the plugin directory for the old version to the new version, and often it worked.  (YMMV, it depends on changes in the SDK.) You might try creating empty directories for a CS5 version number to see if the installer will work.

    Hi Satya!
Like the default SAP backend UWL connectory your 3rd-party connector should make use of a PCD System Object. This system is a mere java component with nothing more than a portalapp.xml defining all the system properties.
Create a system in the portal system landscape based on the System PAR you depoyed.
For every UWL connector you create in portal you define a system alias. This alias has to match the one of your new system object.
And now for the sad part: I didn't find any clue yet about how to access the system from a custom UWL connector. The system alias is available in the method getItems(), but no hint whatsoever how to get the system object to the alias.
I'm still investigating this, since i'm exactly at this point.

  • Can I create a LaunchDaemon for my 3rd-party wireless card?

    Hi there,
I wanted to get .11n wireless on my old Power Mac G5 (Quad 2.5) so I bought a third-party PCI-E card. It works fine, however it's not AirPort compatible, and so at present I have to run it from my Login Items, which in turn means the network isn't available until I login. It uses an application called RALink Wireless Utility.
Does anyone know if there is a way of creating a custom Launch Daemon/Agent for the Wireless Utility app so that I can get it to connect to the wireless network from the login screen? If that is not possible I could get the computer to login automatically on my account, but ideally it would be good to have the launchd option...
    Thanks!

  • Retractable (3rd party?) headset for E51

    Hello,
I've recently acquired an E51 and today I excitedly(!) received a package from Germany containing some HDC-10 headsets with their 2.5mm plugs. I connected one to the E51 and got the message "Enhancement not supported".
For years I had an even older phone (6230i) that had the HS-10 headset and I naively thought that the HDC-10s would fit an E51 with its 2.5mm headset socket.
Does anyone know of a retractable headset that would fit the E51, perhaps even a 3rd party one? (I'm guessing this is unlikely due to the 2.5mm plug). Or whether by some miracle a firmware update would sort out the incompatibility problem?
I have to use a wired headset for all calls and these old retractable Nokia headsets worked a treat. Wires get impossibly tangled with e.g the HS-47 or similar. Mighty disappointing that the HDC-10 doesn't work in the E51 phone despite the obscure 2.5mm plug ... (I even had to order some rare remaining ones from another country!)
Many thanks in advance for any tips and pointers!

    Thanks again, Adrian.
I'm afraid I can't use a Bluetooth headset either as I'm sensitive to the radio waves from that as well ...
I was going to try update the firmware using Nokia Suite but it said it was going to back up the entire phone contents, including applications and several gigabytes of memory card space so I didn't go ahead with it yet -- I've installed various bits and bobs on the phone and I have to say I didn't feel too confident about Nokia's PC software actually restoring all my installations (after having spent most of an afternoon unsuccessfully trying to copy 20 saved SMS messages from the old phone to the new one*).
I have at least manage to find a new phone contract to include a bit more data at 33% a month cheaper than the old tariff. I'll have to give the tangled wire headset a go for the time being, or maybe I'll find something to wind the wire around and clip together. If it gets too much I can always go back to the ancient 6320i ..!
It seems there just simply isn't a market for retractable headsets. As mentioned in my other thread -- it amazes me that I've not personally met anyone else who is sensitive to mobile phone signals to the point of needing headsets -- also I was in a long post office queue about a month ago and there was a woman in front of me talking on her iPhone the whole time, and I was on the point of having to go to the back of the queue to get away from her and her phone ..!
Thanks for your help with all this!
Major digression so no-one should feel obliged to read it!
*(From PC Suite/Nokia Suite t's impossible to access the new phone's "My Folders" folder in the Text Messages system. You can only copy emails into "Drafts" via Nokia Suite or PC Suite and then it's impossible to move them from there either on the phone itself or via the PC, unless you send the text message to someone ... I gave up and sent them to another phone by SMS and then forwarded them on to the new phone ... sigh ...)
