3rd party RAM opposed to the RAM sold by Apple

I'm looking to upgrade my RAM to 4GB and I've seen the $300 RAM sold by Apple and other RAMs for like $45-$60 everywhere else. My question is: Why the big price difference? I was doing a little research and I read that with the aluminum Macbooks, anything but the RAM Apple sells will lock up you computer and lead to constant crashes. Is this true, or can I save my $215 and get the 3rd party upgrade?

just be careful when installing your new ram if you're not all too familiar with hardware installation.
1. ground ground ground. ground yourself before touching the inside of your macbook and before handling the ram sticks. if you're not aware, you can bond yourself by touching any bare metal surface on the macbook.
2. use a static free surface or use an insulating mat.
3. handle the ram by the edges of the circuit board and avoid touching the chips or contact edge.
4. observe the ram already in the macbook before removing... specifically take note of the depth the contact edge is inserted into the slot. when you install the new ram, make sure they are fully seated based on your observation of the old ram.
i cant stress this enough, as most of the problems previously stated and the "symptoms" sound more like fried ram than incompatible ram. this is likely due to people not bonding themselves and accidentally zapping their new ram due to improper handling. granted, there's a lot of cases of poor quality ram causing some peoples' problems, but i'm willing to bet a significant ratio are due to careless or improper handling.
if vendors like crucial, ramjet, and OWC were selling large batches of questionable ram, i'm sure they wouldnt sacrifice their reputation by continuing to sell product known to be bad. just stick with a reputable vendor and you'll be fine.
i read all the same info as you did, and i purchased my upgrade from ramjet based on their claim that they test their ram in the actual computers and not on just a test bench. sure, i was already skeptical of most peoples' claims of "bad ram" but i chose to CYA at the same time and my upgrade has gone just fine.
and no, i dont fear that "it'll go bad after a few weeks" because that's not how memory works. for those that had that happen to them, it's because they zapped their ram due to poor grounding/bonding practices.

Update: Ooof. Having QuickTime Player open while doing a RAM preview makes the RAM preview stutter. Regarding QT player, it is open with a reference movie that is not called upon by After Effects. I have not had a QT in my project since this problem arose a few weeks ago, just PNG sequences and .AIFs.
Multiprocessing is enabled with 4GB ram assigned to each thread, leaving 10 processers avilable for other applications.
I did just see 83% of my 96GB of ram "in use" while AE was divvying up tasks between processors on a failed PNG render. Quit, trashed cache files, and now it's rendering using 6% of RAM.
Happy to start a new thread... what would I call it?

  • How to include 3rd party jar package in the native code aiming to generate ane for android

in my native java code,i need to reference a class in another jar package.Simply to say,i want to make use of member functions of a class of some jar package A in the call function of the native class which have implemented the FREFunction class. To generate the native extension, native java code needs to be compiled to a jar package B.i have tried serveral methods to compile jar package A into B.Howerver my flex project failed to proceed when calling function of package A in the call function of native java code.To be sure of the correctness of the package A and B,i referenced them in a java project with main function and succeeded. at the same time my other call functions of classes impemented FREFunction work well,Then, why did i fail referencing package A?
in the discussion http://forums.adobe.com/message/3965757, i found the same problem, but i was unable to get a workaround, can anybody give me same help?

Standard Java does not support jars within other jars.
Either re-architect your stuff so jars in jars is eliminated, or write a custom classloader that can load from them, or look into 3rd-party solutions, which you can find by searching the net and these forums.

  • No photos in Photostream, but 3rd party apps show that the photos are there

I am having a problem, not sure where to post it. Here is what is happening:
    1. Take a photo with iPhone 4
    2. Syncs to great up until last night
    3. Last night I brought a photo into Nik's Snapseed app on my iPad (import from Photostream)
    4. Now, my synced Photostream shows up on my Iphone 4, iPhoto, but the Photostream album on my iPad shows no photos.
    5. However, the photos are there on the iPad, because if I use a photo editor app and import (again, like Snapseed), the photos are there and I can import. But the Apple's Photo app the album shows no photos.
Very strange....I think this has to be a bug.
Apple really needs to think about real use of Photostream. The concept is great...but I have to admit it is buggy. Adobe Carousel app, when it is released, looks ideal.
Apple, why can we not delete 1 photo (rather than the whole Photostream)?
Apple, is this a bug that we cannot import into other apps because it then blanks out our Photostream?
Apple, why do new photos from my Camera app go to my camera roll and Photostream...workflow of editing and sharing photos is very messy this way with duplicate photos.
I am not sure how I am suppose to get my photostream to show up again on my iPad. I have tried resetting my photostream, hard reset my iPad, nothing works.

Exactly the same problem here too. Its bug, because I see my photostream with a 3rd party app like PS Express.

Usually commercials without value are removed automatically from here. If someone is looking solutions, it is ok to offer 3rd party & add on solutions also.
I just wonder, why it's so important for you, to get people to buy sw and use add on applications. Those will cause more or less proplems anyway.
    Hi turo,
back on the original debat about our E90.
    HW = E90
    SW = 3rd party product
Integration and "out of the box" usage is not part of that "professionnal smartphone" like it is distributed today !
Do you aleady count the huge number of hours spent on that E90 to make it a real professionnal tool ?
As so oftenly written, trying hardly to find, test, install, remove, 3rd party products just to have, or trying to have what E90 has benn created dor is simply not acceptable.
Now, we are just waiting for a FW upgrade that will, maybe, solve few problems.
For me, 3rd party products are workaround but for sure not a solution !
3rd party products add new functionality but also an errors source layer.

  • 3rd party software installed on the Palm

I have a Palm Treo 755p. Which has three different 3rd party software install on it. The 3rd party software consist of UptoDate, Documents to Go, Intellsync. At any time one of these third party applications will reboot the just touching/clicking on anything within the 3rd party application. My short term solution has been to just reinstall the application but now I am wondering if its something bigger like the Palm cannot handle all three 3rd party applications.

  • Crashing after RAM upgrade - really the RAM?

I upgraded my mid 2010 iMac with this RAM http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004TQH6U8/ref=ox_ya_os_product
It is supposed to be compatible and the iMac reads it and reports 12Gb.
The first lot started crashing my iMac when I processed RAW files with Canon Digital Photo Professional. My assumption was that the memory was bad and that it couldn't handle a resource intensive task like image processing...because the Mac wasn't crashing otherwise. When I tried to run Rember, it just crashed the Mac.
I got a replacement set and it's crashed when I tried to convert a RAW file! It doesn't crash it when just viewing the files. So now I'm thinking it may not actually be the RAM. I'm going to apply the update to the Canon software to see if that makes a difference, but I wondered what other steps I should be taking to address the situation. Thing is, the Mac didn't crash when converting RAW files with the original 4Gb of RAM. Could it be the way memory is allocated or something?
    Thanking you in anticipation.

Crucial is usually good for Apple products. They have this System Scanner which will check out your system and tell you exactly what ram to get.
OWC's Apple Mac Memory and service is  also good.

  • IMac (2008) OS10.6.8 - Main menu freezes when running more than one application at a time.  Apple and 3rd party applications - all freeze the main menu.  Safe mode seems to work OK. Tried repairing permissions - didn't work.

For the past 60 days I've experienced Main Menu freeze when running more than one application at a time.  iPhoto, Preview, Text Edit, Epson Scan, Firefox and Thunderbird are the apps I use almost daily.  No matter what I do, when more than one is running they will freeze the Main Menu (top of the screen).  I've tried booting is Safe Mode and I don't seem to have a problem.  I've tried several suggestions from repairing permission (DiskUtility) to eliminating specifis login items.  Nothing works. I've posted this issue on the Apple forum several times and no one else has experienced this problem.  I hesitate to take my iMac to the Apple Store or a private Apple repair service until I've exhausted all of my options.  Do I have any more options?

Question:  Everytime an app crashes I have the option to report it to Apple - which I usually do.  But I've NEVER reported a Main Menu freeze because it never asks me to
There's really no need to submit to Apple, it's just a round file cabinet on the other end, especially with 10.6 or earlier.
This sure sounds like a resource problem...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Which 3rd party extensions are causing the problem?

I am having the page loading problem with Safari 5, and read the knowledge base article <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230> but was hoping we could start a working list of extensions KNOWN to cause problems with 5.0 so we can eliminate duplicated work. (and so I don't have to go through the pile on my computer

It would be a list that could change from day to day. Who can tell when software developers update their stuff?
You should be able to find them in one or either of these folders:
    Home/Library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/Library/Application Support
Close Safari and delete them, then restart Safari and it should be working normally. Alternatively drag them to the desktop and restart Safari. then add them back one at a time, restarting Safari every time, until you find the one (or more) causing the crash.
Check with the developers of the plug-ins in question for updates that are Safari 5 compliant.

  • Recording 3rd party software synth with the synths interface open.

Just got ABL Pro, pretty cool. As you can see from the following screenshot it's like a vintage synth with all kinds of parameters, etc.

Is there a way to leave the ABL Pro interface open in GarageBand while recording so I can tweak the knobs in real time?

    You're right, that doesn't help me. =D
I'd be able to tweak this synth in real time while recording in Logic Express though right?
And then if I got an M-Audio Oxygen 49 controller keyboard to go with Logic, I'd be able to assign those knobs to the real knobs and sliders on the keyboard?

  • Can any 3rd party router piggyback to the black sky hub?

Hi all were having the sky fibre unlimited installed next week and today we have received the new Sky hub SR102 the black one in order to use the fibre optic from next week.  I have heard some bad and good reviews about this hub but one common concern i hear of is the wifi recetpion. My dad however uses the same SR102 and gets great reception from it. I have heard however that if i am to face this problem (hopefully not) i cna always buy another router and piggyback it to the sky hub via ethernet to boost the wifi coverage received. Does anyone know if i can use any router to do this with or does it have to have something specific with it being sky fibre im going to be used?. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you very much.

If you was to go down the route of having another router then you will need one that needs an Access Point mode. What this does is turn off the DHCP function (which assigns your devices an IP) and allows devices to connect into it, whilst the SR102 serves the IP addresses. What I would recommend is to invest in a Power over Ethernet Wireless Extender.Plug one adapter into the mains next to your SR102 and connect it to your router via ethernet. Plug the wireless adapter into the mains elsewhere (assuming where wireless is poor) and follow the instructions to connect over the power lines.  Google "PoE Wireless" or "power line wireless extender"

  • Lower RAM slot damage caused by 3rd party RAM?

I took my 1.33 ghz 15" powerbook G4 in to be repaired this past Friday. The lower RAM slot was not working (as a note, this slot contained the original RAM that came from Apple). Upon noticing that 256 megs I had in there was missing from system profiler, I removed the 3rd party 512 RAM and placed the 256 Apple RAM there, I placed the 512 meg card in the other slot, and then 512 megs were missing when I booted up. Clearly both sticks of RAM worked, the problem was the slot. I took it into Apple.
They called me today to tell me the system was repaired. They also told me something that I don't believe and don't even think is possible: The 3rd party RAM is what caused the problem. The reasons I don't believe this? I have never heard of faulty RAM breaking a RAM slot in my life, it just doesn't work. Also, the RAM worked in there for a long time prior to it not working. I have also heard of a system update which breaks the lower RAM slot, and Apple issuing a recall on a range of powerbooks as a result to replace the motherboard. True, my powerbook is not in the range of serial numbers, but I also know that there are many people who have this problem that are not in the range Apple has recalled.
The RAM was installed free of charge at the store I bought it from (a non-Apple mac store in Los Angeles). It was never removed until I noticed that the RAM was not being detected, and it was the slot, not the RAM that proved defective.
What do you guys think? Could that have legitimately been the problem? Or did Apple just not know what was wrong, fixed the board, and made that up in the hopes of getting me to buy some overpriced Apple RAM?

Hey, whatever mod deleted the reply to this and my subsequent reply to that, why don't you tell me an accurate response? Tell me exactly how working RAM could break the RAM slot it wasn't even plugged into.
Otherwise, Apple is telling a bunch of bull and refusing to admit to a product flaw. Why delete a post speculating on such an issue? All it does is lend credence to the speculation. I believe that it is the case all the more now that you have deleted the posts.

  • Should i buy 3rd party RAM

    Hey
The Macbook RAM on apples website is for £180 for 2GB ($212 if ur US)
But on CRUCIAL'S website they sell 2GB of RAM for only £30!!!!!!!!!!!! (or $60)
    Should i buy 3rd party
Is it safe for my machine, would apple recommend
    Would it void my warranty
    Thanks so much for help

You can use RAM bought from other sources than Apple. Crucial is very good RAM I prefer it myself and use it in my MacBook. It will not void your warranty. FYI the RAM Apple sells is not made by Apple it is made by a lot of the companies that have RAM for sell elsewhere. Crucial is owned by Micron which sells RAm to Apple.
