3rd party USB cable

Just a note to be careful with 3rd party USB cables and the iPad. I have one that works fine with an older iPod, but causes serious issues when used with my iPad. It causes disconnects during syncing and even causes several restarts of my iPad.
Definitely stick with the original cable.

Not surprising as the dock connector changed after the early iPods. Your iPod could easily be one from the older dock pinout. If it isn't then something strange is going on.
Definitely stick with the original cable.
While it is always good to be careful it is likely not really necessary if your cable is relatively new. I have a mix of cables from by 3G, 3GS, iP4, iPad, and various 3rd party cables. All work interchangeably.

  • My MBP shut off after plugging in 3rd party USB and won't start up again

After I plugged in my phone to my MBP with a 3rd party USB cable it shut off and it never turned back on. I read online to wait it out and let the battery die and then plug the MagSafe charger back in. I waited about 24 hours and it still won't turn on. Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?

    Try resetting SMC first:

"Should I remove the battery and re-insert it?"
If the SMC reset doesn't help then that's the way that the SMC was reset when you could remove the battery. We've had luck unplugging power adapter and the battery, pressing the power key and replugging the battery after a few minutes.
Late 2011 Macbook Pro refuses to boot. SMC reset doesn't work
"Thanks for your help. Disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for minutes rather than seconds did the trick. I was able to then reset the SMC and it's fine now. Ordered a new internal battery as the one in use is 3 years old now. Maybe that will help."

  • Banjaxed by 3rd Party Synch Cable or is there hope?

I gave my old 2nd Generation iPod Nano to a nephew who had an old 1st gen iPod. He had a 3rd party usb connection/synch cable. We connected the Nano and its tiny screen flashed something about unable to synch using a firewire cable. We disconnected it and tried to use my cable. Now, no matter what cable we use, the Mac does not recognize the Nano.
I took the Nano back home. Tried it on my Mac with no success. My Mac recognizes my iPhone and other iPod using the same cable without a problem. I tried connecting it to a PC and Windows flashes up a warning saying there is an error with this USB device. I suspect I corrupted the iPod OS or the thing.
I tried resetting it by holding down MENU and SELECT. It reboots dutifully but still isn't recognized anywhere.
I tried putting it into disk mode by holding down MENU and SELECT then quickly holding down SELECT and PLAY/PAUSE. It enters disk mode without a problem but still will not be recognized by Mac or PC.
With exception to being recognized so it can synch or, in my case, BE RESTORED, it seemingly works just fine. It charges, it does everything. It has always been well cared for and is in PERFECT condition... not a blemish or scratch on this sucker. I would hate to have to toss it.
Is there anything an end user can do to force it into something like an iPhone's restore mode? I think it just needs to be lobotomized unless I really did banjax its circuits with that 3rd party synch cable.
    Help?!

Usually, in these cases the iPod does need to be restored. And it is best to have your music backed up on something (like an external hard drive or even burned to a data CD). It seems to me that when programs other than iTunes are continually used to put songs onto the iPod, the iPod starts to run into problems.

  • Airport card vs ethernet vs 3rd party usb adapter.

Hello, I hope someone here can help. I have a G4 tower 8493 and purchased Airport Extreme so I can connect an iPad. After reading tons of support questions it looks like I have 3 options. Purchase an airport card and give up some speed, connect G4 directly to airport exteme with ethernet or purchase a 3rd party usb adapter.
First - are those options correct?
    Second - which is better/stable?
Third - if ehernet is chosen, what exactly would I buy and where would this cable go?
Thanks so much in advance, I really have no idea what I should do.

    Hello,
The Airport 802.11b card & the USB Wifi adapter limited by USB1.1 speeds will have about the same theoretical limit of speed, but I get far better range & speed using the USB adapters, & the USB adapters can do WPA2, which Airport cannot.

Another option is a PCI card, more expensive, but more speed...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/N80211PCI/
Not sure if this cheaper one works on G4s, I'd ask them...

You have a built-in Ethernet port, but make sure it works before going that route.
I'd chose the USB Wifi myself.

  • Connecting my iPhone 4S with 3rd party composite cable; error "accessory not supported by iphone".  Sound comes through and it charges but NO Video???

Connecting my iPhone 4S with 3rd party composite cable; error "accessory not supported by iphone".  Sound comes through and it charges but NO Video???  I have verified the cable, I can play video with sound from iPod Nano 4th gen.

composite don't support mirror so it will only display on the tv when the app being used support tvout option
the build in video app does so it should display on the tv at least my composite cable does with my iphone4
the audio always works it's pretty much works like a headset

  • 3rd party USB mouse won't work with G4 iBook 10.3.9

3rd party USB mouse (see specs below)won't work with G4 iBook 10.3.9.
    http://www.inland-products.com/singleproduct.asp?search=usb&partnum=07340-SpecR
I notice the specs say this mouse works with windows(no mention of Mac) yet the guy where I bought it assured me it would work fine with a Mac. The keyboard/mouse preferences shows a muouse but there is no movement or response from mouse. I would assume it was not reading it if not from appearance of "mouse" preference. I also have intalled UBBoverdrive in hopes that that might help but device/mouse menue does not appear to support mouse.
Is there a way to get this to work or should I just return it to the vendor?
Can anyone suggest a good CHEAP 3n button mouse for Mac?

The name of that mouse is deceiving. It is not a USB mouse it is a wireless mouse. Unfortunately without the proper OS X drivers for the USB/wireless adapter you won't be able to get that thing to work.
If you are looking for an inexpensive USB mouse, checkout the Kensington Mouse in a Box Optical.
Does your iBook have Bluetooth? If so take a look at the Kensington PilotMouse Mini Bluetooth Mouse. I have one of these and it works great.

  • Third party USB cable detected by IOS 7 update

Yesterday I had a working Ipad2 and foolishly I allowed it to update itself. Big mistake!
After all sorts of hangs, reboots etc I got it working again and then watched the battery drain before my eyes. Charged it overnight and after 12 hours it was at 75% and just about holding at that level. I have a third party USB cable and I borrowed my daughters OEM cable. When I plugged that in I could immediately see that it was charging normally BUT it also immediately disabled rotation and it is now stuck in landscape mode. I've tried switching the lock button to "Lock Rotation" and I see the icon on screen changing from locked to unlocked but it will not rotate. WHAT THE..............
Detecting that I am using a cable purchased from another source and deliberately disabling my property without my authority borders on the criminal.
Apple need to get it sorted.

I'm sure Apple would love for you (and everyone else) to use their cables...that's a given. But I seriously doubt that any kind of intentional "crippling" would be done to anyone's unit in some way because they used a third-party cable. Seems like the way it's setup now, if a third-party cable is detected, you'll get an on-screen message that the cable is detected as such and you may have issues when using it.
Try the cable again and if it faults the rotation function in the same way, then you can decide if you want to continue using the cable if it is indeed causing this same fault consistently. Otherwise, it could have just been a coincidence.

  • Can I use a USB camera with the 3rd party USB camera software and share screens?

I want to do more than just use a USB camera w/iChat (or ichatusb).  I also need to be able to initiate screen sharing between two computers.  Specifically, I will use iChat with an insight built in camera on my end, and the other person will be using an iMac G5 PPC using a USB camera and the 3rd party USB software for USB ichat support.
My question then is am I able to request screen sharing (taking over their screen) from my ichat/fw combo to their ichatusb/usb combo?
    thanks
    dc

    Hi,
The Cameras don't come into this at all.  (But iChat and OS versions do)
Each end needs iChat 4 or higher.
Go to the Video menu and Enable Screen Sharing (Selecting toggles a tick On and Off (Tick Present is ON) )
Highlight Buddy in list and use the Screen Sharing icon at the bottom of the list (interlinked rectangles).
The G5 could be on Leopard (iChat 4) and be using a  USB 1.1 camera that would need iUSBCam (formerly iChatUSBCam) as well as the Camera manufacturers Software.
iChat 3 (In Tiger OS 10.4.x) on the G5 with a USB 1.1 camera, Software and iUSBCam may well offer a Screen Sharing option (Or rather Desktop as Video Feed) in the iChat > Video Menu  and that will not work
However if the G5 has USB 2.0 ports (not the Keyboard additional ports) then if it is up to OS 10.4.9 it can use a UVC Camera for Video Chats  (UVC = USB Video Class No need for Additional Drivers) but Screen Sharing will still be an issue due to the iChat version.
IF the G5 is still on OS 10.4.x then you will have to use a third Party VNC app at both ends (And run a iChat Audio Chat along side)

  • Does the iPod Touch charge through 3rd party USB wall adapters?

My new iPod touch 16G does not show that it's charging when plugged into any of a number of third party USB wall adapters (a plug adapter that goes into a regular wall socket, with a USB port for the iPod cable).
I am using the same adapter that has happily charged my minis and nanos. The iPod charges happily on its host computer and also on another computer which does not have iTunes, via the CPU USB.
There is quite a lot of talk on the forums about this issue, but I have not seen a definitive answer, nor any comment from Apple.
    My questions are:
Does anyone have experience of this issue? If so, was it resolved by buying and using an Apple brand charging adapter?
Or are there people out there who exchanged an iPod touch with this issue and found that their replacement was OK in this respect?
    Any help is much appreciated.

This is the one that I have and it costs less than 5$:

For some reason the car charger doesnt charge my touch but the wall charger works fine.

  • 3rd Party Charging Cable Does and Doesn't Work

    I've got:
    Apple Charger
    3 ft Apple Cable
    6 ft 3rd party cable
    MacBook Pro
My 6 ft cable & Apple charger has been charging my iPhone 5S for months.
The other day when I tried plugging it in, I got the "not official charger or cable" message on my phone and it would not charge.
Using the Apple cable, no problem.
Using the 6 ft cable with my MacBook, no problem.
So why does it now complain about using the 6 ft cable with my Apple charger? (Also tried another Apple charger, same result.)

    Hi,
Try a Reset... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
    Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds...
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the iPod On...
You may have to try this several times...

  • IPod 30GB will not work with 3rd party USB 2.0 PCI card

I've had an IOGear PCI USB 2.0 card (GIC220U-BIO) in my Sawtooth for some time now, and have been using it flawlessly with my Canon i860 printer, and Canon LiDE 30 Scanner.
Just recently I received a Video iPod (30GB) and wanted to take advantage the high speed USB bus offered on that card to sync my iPod. The problem is, when I plug in the iPod to the USB port on that card, I get the transparent gray box telling me that I need to restart my mac by pushing the reset switch, or holding the power button for several seconds (in other words, freezes).
The iPod works fine with the built-in USB ports (albeit slow), as well as the high speed port on my iBook G4. Why am I getting this error? There are no drivers or firmware updates for this PCI card available.
    Is there a solution?

Yes, use a different USB 2.0 PCI card, like from Sonnet. I use a Sonnet in a G5 and it works great. There are (at least) 2 USB chipsets and I find the TI ones are great and the other not so great.
The fact it works on 1.1 and the 2.0 on the G4 at least tells you it is not the iPod and a USB 2 card is $20 or $30 at the most.

  • External 3rd party USB DVD drive will not show up on my 2008 Macbook pro

I have a the new Macbook pro, when I connect my Liteon USB DVD drive it does not show up my Macbook pro. The only DVD drive showing up is the one on my Macbook pro. How do I make the 2nd DVD drive show up. I just need to 2nd drive to tranfers data from dvd to the external drive.

Hi, ipodtrip1. Nothing will appear on your MBP's desktop unless there is a disc in the drive. Does a disc in the drive not appear either?
If not, does System Profiler detect the drive as a connected device?
If you have another USB device you can connect to your computer, disconnect the optical drive and connect the other device. Does System Profiler detect that device?
If not, reset the System Management Controller, and see whether doing so reactivates your USB port.

  • 3rd party USB PCI card and Leopard

I installed a USB 2.0 Compusa Card in my Dual 867 Mac several Years ago, to get USB 2.0 speeds when i got a new Ipod. When 10.4, most t=of the time, early versions not included, I was unable to put the card computer to sleep and then be able to revive it. Leopard fixed that problem, but now the card is losing ports. It is a four port card, and the currently the two inner most ports are not working. The two outer ports are still working. I have had since prior to installing 10.5 my Iphone, Dock, A USB external Drive, for time machine, A USB hub, and my Keyboard attached to the USB 2.0 card. Now the drive disappeared and I am unable to retrieve. Anyone else having this Problem, has anyone had this problem and resolved it. Any help would be appreciated. I am contemplating a New PCI USb 2.0 card, but Not sure if it is the card or Leopard, as i have not had a any problems until 10.5 and 10.5.1 installations.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello.
I have a G4 Dual 1.42GHz (FW800) and an USB 2.0 PCI card (VIA chipset) and it also worked very fine under Tiger. Since this card is sold for the PC market it doesn't bring a driver for Mac OS X.
I went to the VIA site (http://www.via.com.tw/), there I could found they have another site with drivers for almost any OS. This is the address: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
Click on the Mac OS choice in the list and then in USB to get the driver. The driver version is 1.60 and it supports G4 systems ONLY and OS versions: MAC OS X 10.2.x, MAC OS X 10.3.x, MAC OS X 10.4.x. Nothing is said about MAC OS 10.5.x.
Unfortunately it doesn't work in my G4 with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I also tried to use the USB 2.0 PCI card before installing the driver to see if Apple could have done a driver of its own, but it also didn't work.
If your card has a VIA chipset I recommend you write an e-mail to VIA Technologies, Inc. and tell your problem and ask for the update. I did it too.
I hope they can work it out soon.

  • 3rd party video cable "Not designed for iPhone" message

Ok i got the original Apple Component Video Cable...works fine and everything...i went to a friends (he has the 3GS) house and we are going to use my iPhone 4 to watch NetFlix on the big screen...he has a RocketFish brand(looks a lot better than Apple ones)...i hooked it up and says "not designed for iPhone" but works perfectly and even better picture quality...
So Why do we get a message like that were its pretty much the same cable just different brand? Is there like a chip inside that says original apple product or something?

you know i wonder the same thing im guessing that its the pin layout that does it and not a chip but thats my guess...
