3rd party wireless cards

Are there any drivers for wireless cards from a 3rd party, say netgear, had one laying around, tried to use it, I did try orangeware.com, but that didnt work, software did, hardware didnt, any Ideas?
my mobo has no provisions for airport.

Got an 802.11g PCMCIA card from MacWireless.com for my Ti Powerbook G4. Works fine; no problems with either Tiger or Leopard.
Per instructions, I started by removing the Airport 802.11b card that came with the G4. MacWireless accepted it for a rebate, which made the new card free. Easier than selling the Airport myself.

  • Any 3rd party wireless cards that fit in Airport slot?

    Hi,
I was wondering if there was a third party wireless card (preferebly N) that would fit inside an imac g4 airport card slot? I already have a usb solution but I would prefer and intergrated solution that fit inside the airport slot, as USB ports are sparse on the machine (3). The reason im asking is because the original extreme cards are hard to find as they arent made any more and they go for upwards of $30 for a used one and thats just for G.
    Any suggestion?

Your question is really more about the iMac G4 and it's capabilities. You might get a faster answer if you post in the iMac G4 Forum under the wireless and networking discussions.

  • How to control an Apple Base Station with 3rd-party wireless card?

I recently upgraded my early 2004 Power Mac G5 2GHz DP to the 802.11n standard using a Newertechnology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b Wireless PCI Adapter to communicate with my new "n"-standard 2TB Time Capsule. My G5 shipped with an 802.11g-standard Airport Card which I disconnected when I installed the PCI card to avoid hardware conflicts. The new n-standard wireless set-up works without a problem, but having lost the Apple Airport Card, I no longer have the ability to control/manipulate the Timecapsule via the third-party card e.g. I cannot connect/disconnect my internet connection or otherwise troubleshoot the base station.
So, the question is, how can control an Apple base station with a third-party wireless card? As it stands now, I must boot up my laptop just to see if I have a connection.
    My thanks in advance,
    T. North
    Brussels, Belgium

Thanks for the assistance. Yes, I can indeed administer the Time Capsule from inside the Airport Utility, but I am still unable to connect or disconnect the Internet connection like you can with an Airport card (using the Airport drop-down menu.) If my ISP signal drops for whatever reason (which is does often) I have to boot up my laptop just to reconnect. Is there some feature within the Airport Utility that permits one to connect/disconnect the signal? If there is, I haven't found it yet.

  • Can I create a LaunchDaemon for my 3rd-party wireless card?

    Hi there,
I wanted to get .11n wireless on my old Power Mac G5 (Quad 2.5) so I bought a third-party PCI-E card. It works fine, however it's not AirPort compatible, and so at present I have to run it from my Login Items, which in turn means the network isn't available until I login. It uses an application called RALink Wireless Utility.
Does anyone know if there is a way of creating a custom Launch Daemon/Agent for the Wireless Utility app so that I can get it to connect to the wireless network from the login screen? If that is not possible I could get the computer to login automatically on my account, but ideally it would be good to have the launchd option...
    Thanks!

  • Third party Wireless Card on a Power Mac G5, bipro 1.8 GHz

Does anyone has a definite answer whether or not a TrendNet 403 PI+ PCI card would work or not along with my G5 bipro 1.8 Ghz (beginning 05- OS 10.3.9) ?
I have the same card installed on my B&W, which is recognized as an airport extreme card.
Installed into the G5, it is recognized by the hardware :
System Profiler says on Airport Card "Wireless Card Type : Third Party Wireless Card", but "Current Wireless Network : wireless network not available"
I have the 5 bars on airport icon, but they are grey
When I go to Other network and give the name of my network, it keep saying : "There was an error joining the Airport network".
Any clue why it works into my W&B (G4- 400 Mhz) and not into the G5 ?
    Thank's for any advice

  • Help With Third Party Wireless Cards

Hello, I am needing some help with third party wireless cards. I have purchased and installed the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card into my G4. From what ive seen on the discussions page here, this card is known to work with the G4s in place of the more expensive Airport Extreme card. The only problem is that my G4 doesnt even recognize that the card is in the PCI slot. Ive tryed the other PCI slots and still nothing. Previously, i have tried using a belkin and a d-link card that have been known to work in the G4s as well, and had the same problem. I am 100% sure that the card is seated correctly, and cant think of any other reason why it shouldnt detect that something is in the slot. If anyone can inform me what im doing wrong, or has any info on how to get it working, that would be great. Thanks for your time,

Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   2 gb ram, 200 gb hd, dual display

Yes, i run Digidesigns audio editing program called Protools on my Mac. It uses a PCI card to import mic/line audio signals into the program from the hardware interface. I tried moving the Digidesign card and putting the wireless card in the same slot, and still nothing, although the Digidesign card works fine in the other slots. Each time i moved the Digidesign card, it showed up in the different slots, although the ones that were open did not show up at all. Only the PCI slots that are in use show up in ASP on my machine. I have the FW-800 version of the G4, so im not sure if that makes any difference. I have never erased the PRAM before, would you be able to give me directions on how to do that? Thanks a ton for your help. =)

  • 3rd party capture cards

I just got a new Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro to use with FCE, but it appears that FCE doesn't support any 3rd party capture cards.... or am I just not looking in the right place ?

You're correct. FCE does not support third party capture cards. You need FCP for that.

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or 8800 GT now.

Upgrade OS X to Snow Leopard and replace the GPU with Apple's ATI 5770.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • New 10.3.x Airport update and 3rd party PCI cards

    Apples new update states:
"This update resolves AirPort compatibility issues with certain third party 802.11 cards and access points for OS X 10.3.3 through 10.3.9."
Well, any one have the guts to try it yet? I am sick of having my G4 out of date. The last two times I have tried to update it I could not get the PCI wireless card to work and had to roll back to 10.3.7 (?) versions. Very frustrating.
I will try again, but only when I know I have a day up my sleeve to roll it back. Any reports of success or failure would be appreciated.
    Doug

    Thanks Henry.
Fingers crossed that it will work in my case!
Maybe this time I will clone my system and try the upgrade on the clone! Just have to see if I can dig up the disk space....

  • 3rd Party RAID Card options - must make a decision

I've been on the Mac with NLE for high end corporate work since early 90's but only now moving from a 10 bit uncompressed SD edit suite to FCP and I need your valued feedback for a Mac Pro arriving soon. I've spent hours poring over all forums, Apple and otherwise, to select the right raid solution. The situation is that we will edit NTSC into 2009 and make the transition to HD later in the year. So, the initial set-up will be three 1 TB Seagate 7200.11's with a 320GB for O/S (and perhaps more in optical bay for scratch, etc.) I prefer to install the three video drives internally and go with a hardware driven card (Raid 5) that also provides support for external drives if we add later. Caldigit's is the only card that appears to cover all the misc. requirements but the forums list issues with 3rd party storage vs Caldigit's box. Other cards have pros and cons so I'm asking you to tell me what is working in your shop and also whether I should just purchase a 3rd party external enclosure and set up the Seagates there. If so, card recommendation is also critical.

    Hi,
I find installing a RAID 5 inside the Mac Pro has too many limitations. I would rather keep the boot drive in its own internal bay and be able to mount a boot camp disk or other backup disks internally when needed.
A better solution for most users is to mount the RAID 5 externally. The FirmTek SeriTek/5PM enclosure and the HighPoint RocketRAID 2314 combination provides a high quality external RAID 5 solution that is quiet, fast and dependable. You can learn more about it here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/5pm/
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-5pm/

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NAXGIU/arizomacinusergr
There are other solutions that work well too. However, the controllers tend to be much more expensive. RAID 5 users looking for a quality solution at a very reasonable price will find the SeriTek/5PM and RR2314 combination works well.
If you don't mind paying more the Areca ARC-1680ix-12 SAS controller reviewed by AMUG is another high performance option that works well with SATA direct connect enclosures. You can read more about it here:

  • 3rd party N card for a G5 Power Mac?

    Hi all!
I am considering buying a wireless card for my G5 Power Mac. My base station is only a .11g, but I figure I might upgrade somewhere down the line, so I might as well get a .11n card for the Mac if I go this route. As near as I can tell, Apple does not sell .11n Airport Extreme cards for the G5s, and probably doesn't intend to, yes? So, can I plug a standard 802.11n PC card into one of my G5 slots and have it work fine? Does anyone have a recommendation of brand for same?
    Thanks in advance!

    Do you have a source.
I just walk into a computer store, in England I use Maplin for example. I goto the networking section pick up a card that is say £6 for a PCI gigabit card. I look through the plastic sleeve inside the box and can see RTL printed on the chip. So I know its a realtek chipset.
But here ya go when I googled for 'cheap NIC card' I found
    Gigabit Card $9
    100baseT card $3
As it has a realtek chipset it should work on your mac with no extra drivers to install.

  • How to upgrade driver/firmware for 3rd party airport card?

I have a Motorola WPCI810g wireless card that i have been using for over a year. Previously in Panther i tried to upgrade to Airport 4.2 to take advantage of WPA, but i ended up having to downgrade back to 4.1 because 4.2 left airport nonoperational. I have been on Tiger for quite a while and only recently noticed that i was automatically upgraded to Airport 4.2, however I do not have WPA as an encryption option (neither when joining, or creating a network). I can only assume it has to do with the firmware on the card but I cant figure out how to update it. I have tried to search these threads but the closest i can come is using Airport Admin Utility to upgrade the firmware on a base station.
    About Airport is such:
    Airport
    427.1.1
    Component Versions:
    Airport Menu Extra: 427.1.1
    Airport Framework: 429.6.0
    Airport Extreme Driver: 405.1.0
    Airport Admin Utility: 420.5.0
    Airport Setup Assistant: 420.6.0

yup, and this is what it says:
    AirPort Card Information:
    Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available
in addition, I found that I can choose WPA as an encryption if i select 'other' as the network. What I would really like to do is create a network with WPA, since i use this desktop to connect my ibook to the internet. so far nothing...

  • New MacBook attempting to connect to 3rd party wireless n router

I was wondering if anyone might have a few suggestions for me getting a MacBook 2.16 GHz running Mac OS X 10.5.1 connected to a third-party 802.11n wireless access point.
The router is a cheap AirLink 101 N router. I have no problems when the router is set to mixed g/b. I am
The issues start to arise when I start introducing n protocols. If I set the router to mixed g/b/n, I can connect and the network utility will show n speed, but I start having wireless network deafness. Seems connection is lost at times for a few minutes and then comes back. The speed of my network applications such as browsing also seems to slow down. Takes images longer to load. If I set the router to n only, I can never connect. I have tried disabling wireless security and that does not help. I have also tried all other security settings. I just can never connect. I haven't played with the other settings. I have a new iMac that when the router is set to n only will not connect either.
If anyone has suggestions, I would love to try them. I am seriously considering purchasing the AirPort Extreme N, but I don't like to give up on something when I am having problems.
    Thanks,

I'm using Netgear Rangemax DG834 which works great for a Macbook and a PC. Good range in a big house with thick walls and well into the garden. Setup and maintenance is simple.
Having some trouble getting the Macbook to hook up to the network automatically on startup, but that's a Mac not a router problem.
If you want to go for wireless printing then I'd use all Apple stuff as it seems easier to hang together - I've tried a couple of wireless printer servers which were expensive and generally useless.
    Cheers

  • Connecting to a 3rd party wireless system

I live in a community that provides a wifi for its residents. However I do not want to use the wifi directly, I would like to run it through my airport extreme. I do not want to use their open wifi for security reasons.
Is it possible to extend their wifi through my airport extreme or do I have to have it hardwired?
I try the option of extending a network and chose their wifi, but says it is not allowed to extend this network.
    brandon

    Heya,
To achieve what you're looking for you should set up the Airport Extreme to 'Join your existing wireless network'.
You should note that if you manage this, your connection between your Airport Extreme and your Mac/PC will be encrypted and private, but data travelling between your Extreme and the router that acts as a access point for the open wireless network will not be.
e.g. your on some site using your credit card details to buy something....
    CC = credit card details
    Encrypted Encrypted Encrypted UNEncrypted
CC --> MacBook --> Airport Extreme --> Their Open Access point --> The Internet
Although this may be negated using https or whatever but just be aware.
Also just FYI you have to have compatible 'wds' enabled routers to extend the network, which is why this isn't working with theres.
    Regards,
    John
