3rd Refurbished iPod to die since January...

Back in December by iPod 30gig Video (which I had NEVER had a problem with) died, and since it wasn't under warranty (and I hadn't bought Applecare) I decided to replace it with a refurbished one (and yes, I bought AppleCare this time!).
I bought my refurbished ipod online and it worked just like a new one...for a week. One day I went to plug it into my JBL On Tour and it froze. I tried everything on the website but nothing worked, so I sent it in for a replacement. This replacement (refurb #2) never even started out of the box. It was dead from the get go, so I sent it back for (another) replacement.
I have had refurb #3 for about a month now, but today I decided I'd better plug it into my computer for a little updating (it's been several weeks...I've been charging it in the car) and it froze, displayed the VERY LOW BATTERY screen and is now completely dead.
So am I cursed or something? I keep going over my ipod routine, thinking of what could cause these to keep dying. I ruled out the JBL speakers, and it's not my USB ports, and it's doubtful that it is my cables (I still have my old USB cable so I've tried both). Could it be my FM Tuner/charger for the car? I'm not having any trouble listening to the ipod in the car, or when I get to work, it just seems like when I later plug it in to my computer to sync up. Also, this last time the ipod cable was hooked up to a USB hub (which I realize is a no no) but I then tried the regular ports and still I get nothing. Does anyone have any ideas??? I hate to get a 4th refurbished ipod only to kill it too! Also, could it be because the ipods are refurbished?

Sounds like what happened to me with my old 3rd generation iPod. I went through I would have to say 6 iPods over the course of one year. I had originally bought the 3rd gen iPod refurbished from the online Apple Store. Plugged it in, synced all my music, and ejected it. Second time I plugged it in, the computer wouldn't recognize the iPod at all. The "Do Not Disconnect" screen would not even appear. So I sent the iPod in. Same exact thing happened. Sent it in again. Same thing. Then, a new Apple Store opened near me, so I took it there. Got the iPod replaced, but yet again it had a different problem, (can't remember what exactly it was) and again, I got it replaced for free. The last time I took it to the Apple Store, they told me that since I'd been having so many problems with that generation iPod, they would give me a brand new 80gb iPod in replacement for my 40gb 3rd generation iPod. Who would argue for that?
If there's an Apple Store near you, I'd recommend you go there instead of sending the iPod in. You have someone to talk to about the iPod, and instant gratification with a new one ;] .

  • RDS data display and 3rd gen iPod nano

Will RDS data be displayed for compatibile stations when using the Radio remote with 3rd gen iPod nano?

Since the iPod radio remote isn't compatible with the 3rd gen nano, the answer is probably no.
I've found that the radio/remote often does work with iPods that are not listed as compatible, but that some of the features (such as RDS) do not or at least if they do work, they're pretty hit and miss.

    Hi,
I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard and since then my trusty 3rd Gen Ipod will not sync with iTunes (9.0.3). It mounts in Finder, but does not appear in iTunes. The iPod will still charge, but it constantly displays the "Do Not Disconnect" message until manually ejected.

  • I just bought a refurbished Ipod 3rd generation 8 gigs, but when I enter the serial number into Apple's site, it shows up as a 2nd generation. Is this normal?

    I bought a refurbished Ipod touch, 3rd gen(link: http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FC086LL/A?mco=MjI4NjY2MTE)
The home button broke on me, so while setting up servicing for it, when I entered the serial number into the Apple site, my supposedly "3rd gen" Ipod showed up as a 2nd gen. Is this normal? And if not, what can I do about it?

There are no 3rd gen 8GB models.  They did not make them.

I feel your pain, but honestly, Apple won't life a finger to help you.

  • Wanting to buy a refurbished Ipod Nano 3rd generation....Good or Bad

I had purchased the 2nd generation Ipod Nano (display unit) though never played, but when I got it home and synced music onto it the music showed up in the Ipod when connected to the computer thru the USB cable, but once I would unplug the unit from the computer, the Ipod wouldn't even power up. So, I took it back - now I need to replace that one for my daughter. I can't seem to find the 2nd generation Nano's anywhere, but on the Apple website, they have the 3rd generation Ipod Nano silver on clearance but like title states it is REFURBISHED, is this good or bad? I need to know asap, so that other arrangements can be made, just in case I need to look further on Ebay or other forums that list items for sale. Thanks, And I hope to hear from someone real soon. Melissa

Apple's refurbished stuff is supposed to be very good.
Although I have not purchased any of it myself, I know people who have who have all been very happy with it.
Question. Is your iPod still under the 1 year warranty? If so, you can send it in for service.

Refurbished iPod touch 3rd gen won't start.  Just got it today to replace my broken one. It freezes at the screen with the apple logo, then flashes off and tries to restart again. Help!

I have tried holding the power home button but all that does is turn it off. When I try to start it again it goes into the same loop.

  • I just got the refurbished 3rd generation iPod touch and although I keep going to wallpaper and selecting a photo and "setting" it, it doesn't save. My background is still black. What do I do?

I've tried both settings>wallpaper to select a photo and also gone into my photos folder and pushing "set as wallpaper" so I don't know what to try next. I've also tried changing the background to one of the preloaded images and it still didn't work.

Yes, that's the 3rd-gen iPod. What version of iOS is on the iPod? Have you tried restarting it?

  • IPod mysteriously dying during sync

About a month ago, I received a 3rd gen refurbished iPod Touch 32gb as a replacement for my original faulty product. However, whenever I try to sync it to my computer, the iPod makes it about half-way through the sync process before suddenly shutting off and showing the Apple logo. No error report is given on iTunes. At this point, it begins a cycle of shutting off and then attempting to reboot every 10 seconds or so. Most of the time it will not let me put my iPod into recovery mode. Sometimes, my iPod will mysteriously recover for no apparent reason and then return to normal functionality, albeit without any songs or videos loaded onto the hard drive. Usually, however, I must leave my iPod unplugged and let the battery drain before it will be recognized in iTunes once again. However, usually the exact same cycle occurs when I attempt to resync. The problem never seems to be perfectly consistent--on some occasions I have encountered an error message when attempting to sync.
I am running iOS 4.2, OS X 10.6.5, and iTunes 10.1, and my original device had no problem syncing with iTunes. I have run through all of the troubleshooting options offered on Apple.com, scavenged trough many forums but still have not found any solutions to this problem. I even sent it in to Apple, but they said that there was no problem with the device. I guess it would make sense why they did not find an issue since it usually restores just fine. And now, of course, they want to charge me for a phone call. I am extremely frustrated since I have not had a fully operational product ever since I ordered my original device in July! Sorry, had to rant just a little bit...
    Somebody please help!

    Just an update:
I took the iPod to work where I have a much smaller library, about 5 GB (my iPod is an 80 GB model). I reset it and synced to the work computer and it worked. It seems that it can only handle a smaller database? I also ran some diagnostic tests ala
    http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
It won't pass the FW / USB detect test. Perhaps the unit is faulty. In any case, my next step is to try to return it for exchange at Best Buy, though it is 5 days over the 30 day period. How convenient! Nothing about this exprience has been convenient. They should call this thing the iClod.

  • Is a 3rd gen ipod supposed to charge from computer?

I just bought a ipod off ebay, it is a 15gb 3rd gen ipod with touch wheel, but when I plug it into my computer, My computer recognizes it and everything, it just doesn't charge. I have a cigarett charger, and it charges it fine. I updated it to the newest version, and it still doesn't charge, is there any way i can fix that without the restore, since i have music i still haven't transfered, because it keeps dying when plugged into my computer?

Okay. I was reading the USB does not provide power, not that the 3G iPod does not accept power thru USB.
But I must also admit, I forgot the little fact that it's FW charge only.

  • Replacing 32 gb 3rd gen iPod

Replacing an iPod touch. My refurbished iPod is broken. It's been broken since I got it, so it's not my fault. I've been to the genuis bar and it didn't help. I'm thinking of going again and asking for a replacement. Is there anyway I could upgrade it to the 4th gen. when I go without paying so much?

If they replace your 3rd gen under warranty, it will be with another 3rd gen. If you turn in an old iPod for recycling, Apple will give you 10% off the price of a new one. Apple doesn't offer any other trade in options. If you want a 4th gen, you'll have to pay for it.

  • Ipod randomly died and won't turn on again HELP!

The other day I was walking home and I looked down at my Ipod and the screen was slowly fading. Within about 30 seconds the screen completely faded to nothing yet the song kept playing. I let the song play to the end thinking the screen would come back and when the song stopped the Ipod was dead. No new song began playing and the Ipod is unresponsive. It won't even respond when it sits on the dock. I don't think it should be the battery since I just replaced the battery by myself about a month ago. This is a refurbished Ipod and replacing the battery is all I have done since its purchase in January. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! Has my crappy refurb-pod finally played its last song? It didn't even last 6 months....

Oh, I'm sorry about this. I didn't know I was supposed to do a follow-up like this. This is kind of embarrassing...
Anyway, like I said, I did find a way to fix it myself.
Um, and the mods or admins can go ahead and delete this topic if it needs to be.
    Thanks guys. :3

  • Refurbished ipod won't restore

I received a refurbished ipod to replace my old one, when the battery on my old one died (a 3rd generation). I followed the steps to set up my new ipod, installing the latest versions of itunes and ipod updater, then restarting my computer, and opening ipod updater. However, when I connect my ipod to the computer, supposedly the restore button on the ipod updater should become active, but it does not. I am not sure how to restore my ipod. I tried unsuccessfully to reset my ipod, but its screen remains blank. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Can you find another PC and do a Restore there, it is even better if you can find a Mac instead.
] Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
