3TB drive only showing up as 746.5 gb on mac osx 10.5.8

Trying to add Segate Barracuda 7200 3TB 64MB SATA drive. Drive is used in a USB dock.
Mac Pro Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
Any suggestions?

A drive that does not show BOTH its Make & Model and an appropriate non-zero size/capacity cannot be initialized or repaired in its current state. (Off by up to ten percent is still acceptable, because ways of measuring drive sizes vary.)
If it is in an external enclosure, this may be the fault of the enclosure.
If it is direct-connected inside your Mac, the drive has died.

  • 3TB Drive Only Shows Up on My Mac as 750GB

I have a new Western Digital 3TB drive that I am using as an external drive in a NexStar Hard Drive Dock  to connect to my computer. I formatted it in Disk Utility but it only shows up as 746.5 GB and not the full 3TB. I formatted it through Guid Partition but the info says there is 0 partition. I don't actually need a partition, I am trying to use it as backup and copy about 2.5TB of files onto it.I have a Macbook Pro and am running Mac OS 10.5.8
    Any help?

It could be what Kappy said, though these specifications say up to 3 TB: http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/295
If you do not have that exact same model (NST-D100SU) its capacity may be less.

  • 3TB drive only shows as 746.52GB in Windows XP.

I just purchased a 3TB Descktop Drive (DT01ACA300) because on the box it says it works with Window XP. However, when I installed the drive as a Data Drive (not the boot drive), booted the system & looked in the drive manager, it shows that the 3TB drive is only 746.52GB.
When I go into my BIOS the drive shows up as 3000GB (3TB), so the BIOS sees it correclty. Other Hard Drive manufactureres supply software with their drives so that they work correctly with Windows XP. I assumed that would be the case when I bought this drive.
Does anyone know what I need to do to get this drive to work correctly in Windows XP or how I get support from Toshiba???

Windows XP does not support either large drives or those with advanced-format technology. See KB2581408 and KB2510009. Your drive is both.
This Paragon utility should overcome the problem when it's a data drive.

  • Apple RAID Card and 3TB Drives only show 2.2 TB

I tried a 3TB Seagate Barracuda XT drive in the July 2010 Mac Pro (and a Jan 2008 Mac Pro) on the RAID Card that came with the machines (so one is the RAID Card now shipping) and both show a maximum of 2.2 TB with a 3TB drive.
I'm curious if anyone else has tried this with different results. Any luck in getting the RAID Card to see the full 3TB in the drives?
By the way, without the RAID Card, the Mac (OS 10.6.4) sees the full 3TB, but not with it.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Okay. Seems Apple didn't plan for or certify 3TB.
However, Apple doesn't support using 3rd party drives. Some do, and in some situations, drives you would think work don't, or they work but only briefly.
When I said read FAQ I was thinking of all the points like this:
Question: *Which drives does Apple support for the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card?*
Answer: Only Apple SATA drives and Promise 450GB SAS Drive modules sold through the Apple Store are supported for use with the Mac Pro RAID Card (Early 2009) and the Xserve RAID Card (Early 2009).
Apple 300GB SAS Drive modules are supported with the Mac Pro RAID Card (Late 2007) and Xserve RAID Card (Early 2007).
Drives must be either all Serial ATA (SATA) or all Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives. SSD drive modules are not recommended for the Apple RAID Card because these drives use their own on-disk cache and cannot take advantage of the protection provided by the battery-backed cache on the RAID card.

  • How can I download a driver for a Brother printer DCP-J411ODW for Mac OSX 10.9.1?

How can I download a driver for a Brother printer DCP-J411ODW for Mac OSX 10.9.1? I go to the right place on the Brother website and instead of downloading a driver it says there is a problem. Also something I did download and stuff on the CD provided with the printer is for a PC not a MAc. Help please.

OK, connecting a Wi-Fi printer is a 2 step process.
    Connect printer to your network
Have computer to "see" printer on the network.
Follow Apple's steps for connecting a Wi-Fi printer in Printing in OS X. Read the article in it's entirety before installing.

  • 3TB Hard drive only shows 746Gb (Server 2003)

I was trying to set up the 3TB drive as a mirror for a 2TB drive. It was just fine (showed all 3TB) and when I tried to create a new partition, mirror wasn't an available option.
I didn't understand why, so I tried converting back to basic disk and to MBR (in desperation) and then the drive started only showing as 746.39GB.
Does anyone know how I might get it to show all 3TB again? I tried uninstalling the disk from device manager and reinitializing. I tried "CLEAN" from the diskpart tool, but nothing. It always comes back as 746Gb.
If I can't get it to mirror, I don't guess it matter, so if anyone has any input on that too, it would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    1. Convert it to GPT instead of MBR and see the result.
    2. If issue still exists, it could be a hardware related issue. You could try to contact hard disk manufacturer for a firmware update which should able to resolve the issue.

Does the Dual 800 G4 Quicksilver have a problem with hard drives over 128G??

That is a limitation of the Built-in Bus on the Mac you specified. Details in this article:

  • Why does my Lexar USB drive ONLY show in Disk Utilities?

I have read other questions about disk drives NOT showing up on Desktop. I do have external disks checked in preferences AND when I go to save an excel file it shows the drive as an option to save to. I have files on it, WHY CAN I NOT ACCESS IT!?
Whether it is simple or not, I'm not figuring it out please help!

Disk Utility can sometimes see external drives that don't register on the Desktop. This can also apply to damaged USB drives.
Have you tried this? In Disk Utility, click on (highlight)  the Lexmar USB drive listed on the left side, then on the toolbar click the icon, Mount. With a bit of luck this may now show on the Desktop.

  • Wd 3tb harddrive only shows 800gb

Just bought a GREEN Western Digital internal hard drive. Stuck it in an enclosure and connected to my iMac (Lion OS X) via firewire. Computer said it could not be read. Asked me if I wanted to format it. It said yes... took me to Disk Utility which shows only 801.57 GB. I tried formatting it several ways... still/always 801.57GB.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    BDAqua,
I hit solved on your last comment because I think you were right about my initial question.
I'm still testing.  It goes slowly because I do a lot of work on the machine and don't want to conduct large file copy tests while using the computer for other things... every time a copy goes badly, I end up restarting the mac.
The cable swap did nothing... but weirdly, I swapped which USB socket on my mac I used and had the first successful transfer of a large file since I initially moved the drives. I'll be doing another large file transfer tonight or tomorrow and if that one works well, then it is either the usb port or some intermittent problem in the drive itself.
I did read somewhere that this drive needs to be plugged directly into a computer, not linked via a hub. So maybe somehow one of the usb ports on the mac is not as good as the other. Sounds sketchy, but we'll see.
Thanks for the help on this.

  • Hard drive only shows 32gb

    Hi,
I own a HP Pavilion dv6830us laptop w/ Windows Vista Home Premium purchased a couple years ago.  The original WD25--BEVS hard drive failed.  I purchased a WD Scorpio Black 500GB WD5000BPKT to replace.  Installed both recovery discs purchased from HP.  Upon entering Windows after the recovery, a window popped up and said "Unrecoverable Error Has Occured" and prompted me to shut off the laptop.  This would happen every time I restarted the computer.  Eventually I realized it was the HP File Based Installer program that was causing this, so I managed to get to msconfig before the message popped up, and disable it from the startup.  Now I am left with a Windows install with absolutely no additional software on it.
That said, I was frustrated but content with just re-installing everything.  Then I discovered that Windows shows the hard drive as 32 gigs, with less than a gig free.  I downloaded the BIOS update from HP.  Then I downloaded the Western Digital Diagnostics software, and under the Physical Drive box, it recognizes the model and its potential capacity (500gb).  Under the Logical Drive box, it shows File System NFTS, total space 34.37gb, and 1.05 gb free space.
I would like to know how to solve this issue, as this whole process has taken over 2 months and honestly it's been a nightmare.  If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be thankful.
    This question was solved.

The following Microsoft link should help, please remember when extending a partition make sure you have a backup of all your programs and data first.  There is always the chance that something could fail and with it being your primary drive you could lose everything.
This link is for Win7 but it is very similar to what you would do with Vista:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/how-do-i-extend-the-volume-of...
The below instructions are in the link provided and is the info from it that you will need.
Extending Windows 7 Partitions or Volumes
This section will show you have to extend a Windows volume. In order to do this we must open the Disk Management tool where we can resize our volumes. The following steps will walk you through this process.
Click on the Start Menu button in the lower left of your desktop and then click on the Control Panel menu option.
When the Control Panel opens, click on the System and Maintenance category.
When the System and Maintenance category opens, scroll down and click on Administrative Tools.
Double-click on the Computer Management icon. The Computer Management console will now be open. Towards the bottom you will see a category called Storage and underneath that category will be the Disk Management icon as shown below.
Click once on the Disk Management icon and you will now be in the Disk Management utility as shown in the figure below. From this utility you can see all the partitions on your computer and format, delete, create, expand, or resize them. For this tutorial, I am going to expand the E: partition so that it uses up the rest of the available space on Disk 1.
To expand the partition, you simply need to right click on the partition you want to work with and select the Extend option. In this example, I right click on the E: partition and in the menu that comes up I select Extend.
A wizard screen will appear as shown below. Press the Next button to continue.
A new screen, shown below, will appear that allows you to select the available free space on your local drives that you can use to extend the space of the selected partition. It is important to note that Windows 7 allows you to extend a volume using free space on the same drive as well as other drives. I strongly suggest that you do not extend a volume on one disk with free space from another. This is because if one of the drives has a hardware failure, then all the data on that volume will be deleted. Instead only use the free space on a drive that contains the volume you are extending
As discussed in step 5, for this tutorial we are going to expand my 8 GB partition (E: drive) to the full size of Disk 1 using all of its available space. As Disk 1 is the only available free space on my computer, windows 7 will automatically select it as shown in the image above and use the maximum amount available to extend the partition. If there were other drives with free space they would be shown under the Available selection. If you want to extend the volume by a lower amount you can change it in the Select the amount of space in MB: field. Otherwise we press the Next button.
You will now be presented with a confirmation screen. If you are sure you want to extend the volume, press the Finish button. Otherwise, press the Back button to make changes or the Cancel button to cancel this operation.
When Windows 7 has completed extending the volume, you will be back at the Disk Management screen where you will see the volume you extended with the new size. An example of this is shown below.
At this point you can close the Computer Management window as your task is complete.
    Hope this information is helpful.
Let me know if this worked.

  • After creating a new login (bought computer used) and deleting the old one the 500gb hard drive only shows up as 320gb.

So I've just purchased a mid 2011 Macbook Pro 13" used via eBay. Was advertised as having 500gb hard drive and 6gb ram. I checked the ram and it was all legit, checked the hd capacity and it was all correct as well. So I made a new login for myself and deleted the previous owner's. Now my hard drive shows up as 320gb. Even in disk utility and terminal.

One more place to look is SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE>SERIAL-ATA.  If it says 320, you have a 320GB HDD which I suspect it probably will.  They are easy to replace.
    Ciao.

  • FW Drive Only Shows Up in Disk Utility

    Hey All,
We've got a Granite Digital Firewire Drive that we use for nightly backups (with a fantastic piece of software called Deja Vu). To assure we don't confuse the backup drive for the regular drive while working, I changed the permission of the drive so that we could not read or write. In days gone by, doing so would present the user with a "you do not have access" message if you tried to access the Firewire hard drive from the Finder. But now, the drive is completely invisible in the GUI, and the only way I can eject properly it is through Disk Utility. The nightly backup appears to still be running as scheduled, but whether there's anything actually on the drive, I have no idea because I can't see it. More importantly, if and when we need that backup, I can't figure out how to access it, outside of using Disk Utility's 'Restore' feature and copy the (hopefully there) contents to another drive.
We're running Mac OS X 10.4.3 on all systems, and I have tried mounting the drive attached to other computers (a Dual 2Ghz Powermac G5 and a Dual 1Ghz Powemac G4). Thanks!

  • My HD-EG5 hard drive only shows me 99 mb of blank space after installing the App lock feature. ??

Upon installing the HD-EG5 500gig Hard Drive & installing the app lock feature, I was prompted to unplug & replug the drive in. When I did all that showed up was a 99 mb section called App unlock. After checking the drive at the most basic level, I can see the other 460+ gig using external software but it cannot be seen when you plug the drive into a USB port.

    Travis,
I suggest that you format the hard drive in FAT32 format to resolve the issue.

  • Two SATA Hard Drives, Main Drive only shows up in Bios if PC is off

I am having a devil of a problem.  My main hard drive is a SATA Seagate 500GB, my other HD is a STAT 80GB that I use for a scratch drive for Photoshop.  When I boot from the PC being off, the MB recognizes my Seagate 500 Sata HD.  When I reboot, it cannot find the 500 GB and I get the NTLDR is Missing message that system files aren't found.  This occurs no matter how often I reboot.

  • 160GB Native Hard Drive Only Showing 78GB

Hey all I hope someone can help because this is driving me nuts
I had a Macbook I got in 2008 and at some point (( while the computer was still in warrenty )) the hard drive dropped to 80GB's so I decided to upgrade it thinking I origionally only had 80GB
So I have had this hard drive ever since that is meant to be 160GB but is currently only 80GB ish
I have tried loading it through a PC, formatting it through the PC
Tried multiple times to run error checker through Disk Utility on the Mac
It is really bugging me because this is a really handy little hard drive to have around, what am I to do? please help
    Thank you

When I received a second-hand MacBook a few years ago, the hard drive appeared to be an 80GB but really was twice that size. I sought to repair the situation as I've done on dozens of other older Macs over the past decade or so, but found it rather odd when I found out indirectly it was also a much larger size drive.
Turns out I had to reformat the disk using the booted version of Disk Utility in order to get the full capacity restored for the OS X to use. And in this instance, the issue was determined by me to have been due to a previous owner having incorrectly deleted the partition they'd created in OS X to boot into Windows. The BootCamp software had been used, and that would've been required to be used again to correctly remove the partition, in this instance. I didn't have it.
And if you do replace the hard drive to get a better larger faster one, also acquire an external enclosure for the one in the Mac now. It may be repaired through software, or it may have sector damage that is beyond help through use of Disk Utility; but there are third-party utilities, at retail, for technical repairs.
The error checking and repairs in Disk Utility won't do much unless the system is not running on the drive; so by booting from the install DVD (or a external clone, or backup, or recovery partition, etc) and unmounting the computer's drive, it could be repaired by that utility. If you make a bootable system clone, be sure to test the viability of a clone (should start the computer easily) before an attempt to secure erase + reformat a HDD.
