3Tb hard drive ,WD3003FZEX -00Z4SAO Black is only showin as 801Gb

Hi.
HP Pavilion p6360uk desktop pc, windows 7 64bit-up to date,
ms-7613 (Iona) motherboard bios updated
existing Hard Drive-WD15EADS-65P8BX 1,TB working fine,
Intel (R) ICH8R 5 Series/3400 SATA RAID Controler
Installed new 3Tb hard drive ,WD3003FZEX -00Z4SAO Black .BIOS only showing as 801Gb.
Any Help,Please!

The simple solution is to install a 2TB drive. Otherwise please the following articles.
1) Beyond 2.1 GB and the UEFI BIOS
2) The GPT format and using 3TB as data drives only
3) How to know if my computer is using EFI/UEFI or BIOS firmware interface

  • 3TB Hard drive only shows 746Gb (Server 2003)

I was trying to set up the 3TB drive as a mirror for a 2TB drive. It was just fine (showed all 3TB) and when I tried to create a new partition, mirror wasn't an available option.
I didn't understand why, so I tried converting back to basic disk and to MBR (in desperation) and then the drive started only showing as 746.39GB.
Does anyone know how I might get it to show all 3TB again? I tried uninstalling the disk from device manager and reinitializing. I tried "CLEAN" from the diskpart tool, but nothing. It always comes back as 746Gb.
If I can't get it to mirror, I don't guess it matter, so if anyone has any input on that too, it would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    1. Convert it to GPT instead of MBR and see the result.
    2. If issue still exists, it could be a hardware related issue. You could try to contact hard disk manufacturer for a firmware update which should able to resolve the issue.

  • Is a WD My Book Studio Desktop 3TB Hard Drive - FW 400/800, USB 2.0, Apple Time Machine Ready external hard drive bootable with my Powerbook G4 12" PPC 10.5.8?

    Sirs or madams,
Is my Powerbook G4 12” PPC 10.5.8 'bootable' with a Western Digital My Book Studio Desktop 3TB Hard Drive - FW 400/800, USB 2.0, Apple Time Machine Ready external hard drive? Western Digital says officially no, but that it MIGHT be. I primarily live in China and bought a datastorage.com.cn Clearlight s400+ external hard drive enclosure with a 320GB disk drive a few years ago in China. My computer 'boots' fine from it, but since I got it in China all the paperwork, etc. is in Chinese; my Chinese isn't quite sufficient enough yet to read it. But there are references to something called "SATA", whatever that is.
My level of computer 'under the hood' knowledge is extremely low. I've been told that SATA has some relationship as to whether or not an external hard drive will boot a computer via the Firewire connection, something relating to 'interface', which I assume is how separate electronic gadgets work, or don't work, with each other.
I frankly don't care much for computers, the internet, or their related gadgets such as all these fancy phones. I longingly reminisce about the days when there were no such things. I use a computer & the internet because I have to, and unfortunately unlike a car where one doesn't have to have 'under the hood' knowledge to operate it, just knowledge of the steering wheel, brake, gas, etc., one seemingly must know a ridiculously great amount of 'under the hood' knowledge, including jargon, to operate computers.
So, please try to respond accordingly; thank you.
If this particular external hard drive won't, for certain, be bootable with my computer, can you advise as to what readily available brand/model would be in the 3TB range for a similar price, roughly $150ish??
    Thank you very much.

    Mr. BGreg,
Thank you very much. "...under the covers...". I think you meant "under the hood", as in a car. I suppose "under the covers" would be man/woman interfacing, which I am familiar with!
Actually, I'm back in the US now for a few months. I looked at the OWC web site, but only cusorily so far. I'll contact them; they appear knowledgeable about Apple computers.
As to what you wrote about Western Digital's cases, I certainly wouldn't want a poor case. In China I had over time gotten 3 different external drive cases, 3 different Chinese brands, and separately bought Hitachi brand disk drives that 'simply' plugged into the cases. The drives are roughly 80GB 120GB and 320GB. The two larger ones are in cases that have Firewire plugs/jacks, which are bootable with my computer.
So my understanding, as you wrote, has been that my Powerbook will boot from an external hard drive, provided it connects via Firewire, and the disk drive itself is 'normally' formatted with however my computer's own disk drive is formatted, (HFS OS extended (journaled) or some such??). So I was left wondering why Western Digital would indicate that even though their such-and-so external hard drive case/drive was Firewire capable, that they would then say it would not be bootable with my Apple PPC computer......
Well, anyway, since you indicated Western Digital's case quality is suspect, then I'll try OWC and disregard Western Digital.
Naturally, OWC should be able to address this, but your thoughts are also welcome. You mentioned the OWC cases are good with Apples. Would the disk drives OWC supplied with the cases also be of relatively dependable quality?? From my so far only cursory look at their web site they appear to have various options, including case only options where I could insert my own or their own drives. These sorts of options seem preferable, also along with quality components.
My Powerbook has been in use since 2004. In China I put in a 1.25 memory 'chip' in the bottom and installed the 10.5.8 operating system, which I understand are the maximum workable with my Powerbook. When I inquired with Chinese friends if my 1.33 GHz processor could be taken out and a more powerful one put in, they said it wasn't feasible because in my particular computer my processor was, as I recall them saying, soldered/'permanently' connected with the 'motherboard', that it would just be easier to get a new computer.
I would be with them and they would nonchalantly open it completely up showing me all its tightly arranged 'innards' while at least giving it a good internal dust/dirt clean job for cheap lunch and a beer (& so much dirt/dust/lint there was!)...these are the same folks who build the things of course...fast moving hands with tiny screws flying everywhere, but everything 100% all back in place when finished.
My Chinese friends also said that nowadays Apples are not as well built as when my Powerbook was built, that nowadays an Apple's life expectancy was considerably lower, so I fear that when I get a new computer that, though it will be more up-to-date and powerful, etc., it most probably won't last near as long as my Powerbook has. They also said that in an older computer the fan was often the first component to go bad, and if a new one couldn't be easily found, as they said was my case, then you're just left with having to get an entirely new computer.  Part of why I dislike electronic computer gadgets generally is that they are obsolete so quickly.
So, anyway, thanks very much for your information.

  • I just installed a 3TB hard drive on an early 2008 mac pro and the system doesn't recognize the drive.  What now?

I just installed a 3TB hard drive on an early 2008 mac pro and it is not recognized/not visible.  What now?

If the drive is correctly installed on to the sled, and the mounting screws are snug, not tight, and the sled is inserted properly so that all the roof-tangs catch as the sled is inserted, failure to show up in Disk Utility means the drive is not useable.
A Bug in 10.8.4 and later precludes Disk Utility ERASE-ing large drives in Internal bays. Use PARTITION only, and create one new partition, GUID partition Map, Mac OS Extended (journaled) Volume.

  • Will k8n sli platinum support 3TB hard drives

    Folks,
will the k8n sli platinum motherboard support 3TB hard drives? I have a 3TB hard drive that displays as 746GB. Latest bios is on board and running win7 64bit.
    Many thanks
    Dave

in the BIOS it states 3TB under the hard drive section, however that might just mean it's reading the drives properties and not it's capabilities if you know what I mean.
In the motherboards raid setup only 746GB on each drive is available and within Windows only 746GB is available.
I've read somewhere that's it's got something to do with 32bit "storage" hardware systems only being able to address 2.2GB or close to that. I think I'm gonna have to upgrade.
    cheers
    Dave

  • 3TB hard drive

I have an interesting problem that I have searched a very long time for and have not yet found an answer..
I have a 3TB WD Elements drive, it works fine, loaded it with about 2.5tb worth of data.  Plugged it into my linksys E4200 router as a storage device, found out the router doesn't support 3TB (it only displayed as 746gb on the router).  So I safely
removed it from the router, then plugged it into back into my computer.  Now it says in windows that it is a 746gb drive.  In Disk management it says it is a 3tb hard drive, but windows explorer says it is 746gb.  So, I know the router didn't
reformat the drive to 746gb, so what is up with windows only showing it as a 746gb drive?
Ive reinstalled drivers for the drive, updated intel rapid storage, and messed with other random things but have not come up with a solution yet.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to reformat it because I have so much data on
there it that reformating would be last resort.

    You've
listed your rig- v. impressive but I understand nothing - presumably it's UEFI with GPT drives - making them bootable from said drive/s
The discussion in play is MBR - Its limitations and how to deploy excess from 2TB net (2.2TB gross)
If you require one Partition of 3 or 4 TB, then GPT on a MBR BIOS PC will do it, but you cannot Boot from it         However, 746GB or 1617GB
excess can be allocated with Seagate DiscWizard/Acronis True Image WD EXTENDED CAPACITY MANAGER, freely available for Seagate, Maxtor, WD Drives -WARNING - Do Not Attempt without FULL BACKUP (On another Physical Drive)
TIP - Your Restored O/S or the one's in situ will only see Extended Partition if DiscWizard/Acronis T.I. WD is installed - installs driver that makes this possible
    Useful Tools - WD Mybook USB3 2TB/3TB
                                                                  Seagate DiscWizard/Acronis True Image WD
BOOT CD (Created from within DiscWizard/ATI)     Parttition Mini Tool/Easus Partition manager (Have both, sometimes one will do what the other won't allow)
EasyBCD - essential for MultiBooting inc, Linux
    '"that
talks about a freeware, but then you are way off and in bad territory" thus speaks an officianado with many points to his name. The only risk you're taking is by not Backing Up - or Backing up on the Drive you're working on - Software supplied by Seagate
and WD, although free cannot be regarded as 'third party', Storage is their business and is very flexible - clear what you've backed up and where backups are stored
'Today's Third Party Software is tomorrow's Ist Party feature in an O/S'
    The
storage released in this way can only used as storage - create partition/s in normal way - NO Booting from this 'Drive' within a physical drive
Let me know, if there's anybody out there that needs an O/S Partition greater than > 2TB
    Second point:
    'I
have used old machines for NAS use fine. Linux and Windows can both be used.'
My question is were any of the NAS drive/s over 2TB net and did you plug them into a Router, which was
the scenario in play ? And what was the interface between NAS and PC, how fast did Linux and Windows boot from NAS compared to O/S on native SATA drive ?

  • Issues with 3TB Hard Drives

    Hi,
For a video project we bought several 3TB files to archive video files.
We are using a MacPro 2008 and a new Macbook Pro 17'' to handle the files.
But today we found something weird.
The External 3TB hard drives - Freecom Quadro - work just fine.
The Internal 3TB WD Green Hard Drives (to back ups) when connect to a HD Dock - we tried several models from several brands including also quadro model from Freecom - only work if the Dock is connect through eSata to the computers (both Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro). If it's connected through USB or Firewire it doesn't work, ie, it asks to format the hard drive and can only format for a 800gb partition.
    Anybody nows why?
Any solution how to make the internal 3TB HD to be fully recognized by the Mac OS X system?
    Nuno

First we thought that us the USB/Firewire ports but not. The External 3TB Freecom HD works perfectly. It's just the internal hard drives + HD Dock that don't work through USB/Firewire (but work through eSATA).

  • IMac 27" late 2012 3TB hard drive bad blocks

    Hi Guys,
I just received the new iMac 27" late 2012 with 3TB hard drive and as soon as I run Drive Genius version 3.2.2 I saw that the drive has 8 bad blocks.
I tried to deleted the logical volume and reinstall the OS X 10.8.2 and after a scan I got the same 8 bad blocks. I give it another try and erase the entire 3 TB volu except the recovery partition and installed Mountain Lion and after running another Drive Genius SCAN for almost 12 hours I got 8 bad blocks again.
Called Apple Support and they are clueless about what is going on as they are not even aware that the late 2012 iMac 27" is not even in stores yet.
I was told that as long as I do not have errors within the OS X I should not worry about as he HDD is fine. I do not believe it since from my experience when you have a bad block you also have a physical damage on you disk surface.
I called Apple Support again and I was told to go to Genius Bar and have them to replace the HDD to a unit not even a week old. I think that I am going to return the unit, maybe I got a lemon and the unit got dropped during the shipping process or who knows.
I hope that this thread will help other owners to have them to run a check disk or scan disk just to make sure that they do not have a bad hard drive on their new iMac late 2012.
Again I have nothing against to anyone as I just hope that someone from Apple will find this thread and try to prevent this from happening to a large scale.
    Thank you.

Drive Genius will report bad blocks when none are present. It may even be responsible for disk corruption.
    See: DriveGenius = Problem
Get rid of Drive Genius. Do not install such junk on a Mac.

  • External hard drives suddenly changed to read only

Three of my external hard drives suddenly changed to read only. These hard drives have been working on my macbook pro for months. When I click on get info 'read only' shows up and there is no lock icon nor is there a window that shows name | permissions, also in disk utility the 'verify disk premissions', 'verify disk', 'repair disk', and 'repair disk premissions' buttons are ghosted and I can not select them. I have not made any changes to my computer and I have read many other posts and have not been able to find a solution.

About a hundred times with no luck. Some of my research is leading to Western Digital, there may be a problem with the drives' 'smartware' software. I've been using this drive for months and I never used the 'smartware', but I tried it anyway with no luck. I just remembered that four days ago I had this drive plugged this drive into an Iomega wireless storage device and it seemed to work fine. Now the wireless storage device can't find the drive at all. I just need to know if there is a way I can change the permissions back to read/write, otherwise I will have to buy another drive and transfer all the data to the new drive and re-formatt the wd drive.

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
    that leaves
    a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
    b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
    c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

    Hi Le Etta,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Take a look at the article below, it provides details and instructions for multiple ways of moving the music from an old computer to a new one.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    Method
    Considerations
    Home Sharing
The easiest option, as long as your new computer is already connected to the Internet.
    External drive
Requires additional hardware but backs up your iTunes library.
    Transferring purchases
Fastest, but only moves the content you purchased from the iTunes Store. Also requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod with the content on it.
    Windows Migration Assistant
Works best for migrating from an old PC to a new Mac, and transfers more than iTunes.

  • Can I use a 3TB Hard Drive in my iMac mid 2010 27" ?

I am updating my system with SSD and I want to replace the stock HD with a 3TB Hard Drive. It's an Hitachi HD.

Maybe...but the problem is heat.   You can always add it externally via Firewire using a Newertech Voyager.

3TB is no problem.. you will need to format it on the Mac HFS+ ie Mac OS extended journaled. Don't try using FAT32 etc for such a large drive.
