3TB internal drive only recognised as 2TB

I bought a 3.5" 3TB drive today in PC World to be used as a second, data only drive in my pc. When I installed it, it wasn't listed in explorer. So I had a look in Disk Management and although it was listed, it was showing as one ~2TB and one ~1TB partitions. Both partitions were showing as not allocated. Windows let me create an active partition on the 2TB partition, but wouldn't let me do anything with the other one. So I tried a partition manager and it wouldn't let me do anything with the 2nd partition either.
The pc has an intel DQ965GF LGA775 motherboard, running Windows 7 Ultimate x86. I've checked the motherboard manual and BIOS update revision notes and there isn't anything to suggest a 3TB drive wouldn't be supported.

I think you are on the wrong place here.
In such case I think you need some help from your PC manufacturer support and not from HDD manufacturer.
Toshiba offers own products but cannot support functionality on hundreds different systems out there.
Contact mainboard manufacturer support and ask if there is some limitation.

  • Want 1TB Windows partition on 3TB internal drive

I was able to successful finally get a Windows (Boot Camp) partition on my 3TB internal drive (see this thread), but it allocated 2TB to Windows. Loner T explained why this was, but said that it was possible to get 1TB for Mac OSX, 1TB for Windows, and the last 1TB as ColdStorage for Mac OSX. I would like to do this, if anyone (Loner T?) has the instructions).
Also is it possible to link the two Mac OSX partitions so that it looks and acts as a single drive. (I am assuming that ColdStorage does that by default, but if not, my question stands.)
Thanks in advance so any information anyone can provide.

  • 3TB Hard drive only shows 746Gb (Server 2003)

I was trying to set up the 3TB drive as a mirror for a 2TB drive. It was just fine (showed all 3TB) and when I tried to create a new partition, mirror wasn't an available option.
I didn't understand why, so I tried converting back to basic disk and to MBR (in desperation) and then the drive started only showing as 746.39GB.
Does anyone know how I might get it to show all 3TB again? I tried uninstalling the disk from device manager and reinitializing. I tried "CLEAN" from the diskpart tool, but nothing. It always comes back as 746Gb.
If I can't get it to mirror, I don't guess it matter, so if anyone has any input on that too, it would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    1. Convert it to GPT instead of MBR and see the result.
    2. If issue still exists, it could be a hardware related issue. You could try to contact hard disk manufacturer for a firmware update which should able to resolve the issue.

  • Cannot Partition 3TB Internal Drive for Bootcamp

I have read a number of threads and tried a number of things from various websites to get my iMac to use Bootcamp, but no luck. It was so easy with my MacBook Pro. :^/
The basic problem is that when I start with a single, internal 3TB drive with a brand, new clean install of Yosemite, I get the message:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
To get past this I go into Disk Utility and resize the partition from 3TB to 2TB. This allows me to get past this screen and have Boot Camp partition the drive. Note that it shows the drive as 2TB and I divide it equally with 1TB for Mac and 1TB for Windows.
In the Windows installer the first thing you notice is that there are five partitions, and that the Windows partition is 1.8 TB, it having grabbed the empty space for itself. It complains that it cannot use the partition as it uses the GPT Partition Style, so I click the Format option to have it format as NTFS. But it still complains that it cannot use the partition because of its style.
Going back into the Mac OS and using Disk Utility, I try and reformat the partition to ExFAT and it starts to, but fails indicating that it is not supported for Core Storage.
I have been through this cycle several times now. I thought the issue previously was because of an older version of OS X. I then upgraded and found the same issue. So in order to change the partition style I finally wiped the drive using Disk Utility from a bootable USB and reinstalled Yosemite cleanly.
If I missed a step or option somewhere I am willing to wipe the drive again. I just need to know what to change. Here is the current state of my drive:

This is an example if the partitions are
    GPT1 = MBR1 = EFI
    GPT2 = MBR2 = OSX
    GPT3 = MBR3 = Recovery HD
    GPT4 = MBR4 = BOOTCAMP.
You will need to pick the correct order based on how you format the 3TB disk. Any GPT entry beyond the 2TB address will not be a part of the MBR.
Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 6. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers.
    Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    P  (Print list of parts)
    R   (Recover)
    H (chooses Hybrid)
Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
    Y (Good for GRUB question)
    N (part 2 boot flag)
    N (part 3 boot flag)
Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    W  (Write the new MBR)
Y    (Yes! write the new MBR)
    Reboot
Here is an example of the Q&A (when using partitions 2 3 4) ...
Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y
Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)
Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N
Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)
Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N
Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)
Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): 07
Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

  • Why do the folders  on my external sparse drive only open in icon view?

Even though I select list view, the next time I open a folder it is always in icon view. The "view option"  in the View pulldown menu only shows a box for Always open in icon view and the "Use as Defaults" box is greyed out.  This problem does not exist on my iMac internal drive, only on the external drive on which I have created a sparse image for security purposes.

I followed exactly what you advised, and it all worked. I did convert the files first that were .AVI ---> .MP4 (the audio and video came out beautifully when viewed). I organized my files around a bit, and then I went into Itunes---> Preferences---> Advanced---> Changed where I want to grab my movies from. It keep all my previous music, tv, movies, podcasts files that I had in ITunes, and just "added" the new content without disrupting anything in my Itunes at all. I LOVED IT...so simple in the end.
The files did take a while to convert, but I only had to do the ones that I had that were labeled ".AVI". The program, HAND BRAKE, allowed me to set up a "batch" and I had them converting during the afternoon and into the evening.

Since whenever I open my Itunes, all the movies display well, and so my APPLE TV can now view all my "content" in Itunes. I thought I was going to have to return that APPLE TV since I couldn't figure a way around it, and all in all, it wasn't all that bad of a process to convert and then change file location in preferences.

  • 3TB boot drive, can only use 2TB. Cannot allocate space?

I have bought Sabertooth x79 motherboard, I installed 3 tb seagate drive in it, i was trying to install windows 7 64 bit on that drive but when i partition it there is 746.5 gb space is left unallocated, that space is useless even after complete windows
    isntallation.
I have tried on uefi only, uefi and legacy and legacy only but it didn't workout.
I was doing partition after converting hdd to gpt.
Thankyou in advance for your help

You must be using the UEFI mode of the system configuration BIOS.
The HDD must be a GPT disk, MBR is limited to the 2tb.
    See info @
http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1923415/install-windows-3tb-4tb-larger-hdd.html for the procedure.  There are many more examples on the internet.  Just search for
Install Windows on 3TB hard drive
You must also install from the DVD unless you do a special configuration of the USB Flash Drive for UEFI installation.  See info @
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/home_is_where_i_lay_my_head/archive/2012/10/02/how-to-install-windows-7-or-8-from-usb-using-uefi.aspx
You can also search the Microsoft website for links on install windows on 3tb hdd.
When I installed mine I let the Windows installation program do all the partitioning.

  • Two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine; only one backup deletes.

I'm using two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine and deleted some backups while in Time Machine. They deleted from drive A, but drive B still has the files. Is there a way to delete these? I tried unmounting drive A in Disk Utility but then I can't enter Time Machine.
I love the dual backups, but should I be able to do dual deletes of all backups? I don't see a way to accomplishg this except to force Time Machine to do a backup, then do that again so it switches drives, but that seems a bit convoluted.
If one of you guru types has an answer I'd be most interested.
    Thanks.

    Mac Pro 3.1 8 Core ML.3

You can manually deal with this by using the "Browse Other Backup Disks" function which is accessed via holding the opt/alt key and while selecting the TM icon in the menu bar.
You can then delete the instances of the desired files in each backup set.
Not elegant, but I wouldn't expect that this will be done automatically, as there are a lot of permutations of how you use multiple backup sets.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • Imac has 2tb internal drive, can i use a 2 tb external for TM?

I wiild like to use a 2 tb drive to backup my imac (2tb) with TM. Does time machine do a full disk backup or only the used memory? I haven't seen and drives larger than 2tb if this wont work.

TM as any other backup tool backs up used disk space, not the whole disk capacity. how much data do you have on the internal drive? note that TM drive should generally be at least two times bigger than the total amount of data you are backing up. you might want to look at a RAID array to use as a backup drive if you don't satisfy that ratio. or you can use a different backup solution which doesn't require as much space on the backup drive. see this post by kappy for options

  • Internal Drive 1TB or 2TB?

    Hi all,
My intent to have a 27" i7 2.93 paired with a FW800 Raid0 G-Raid 2TB drive for video editing and my photography work.
Internal drive will be used for the OS and Apps only
FW800 External drive will be used for lightroom catalog and files and video
Backup will be to a RAID1 NAS.
Question is should I buy the iMac with a 1TB or 2TB internal drive?
I'm sure 1TB is ample for OS and Apps, but I wondering is resell value and flexibility would justify the extra cost.
    Any comments appreciated.

    Hello P:
    Opinion….
but I wondering is resell value and flexibility would justify the extra cost.
I seriously doubt that resale would be affected. I don't see any "flexibility" benefit - based on your description of planned use.

  • Time machine only backs up one internal drive

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008 running 10.8.5 with 3 internal drives.  Time machine sucessfully backs up the 600GB boot drive but has stopped working with the all important 3TB Data drive (half full).  The remaining 4TB drive is for Time machine backups.  Only the boot drive now sucessfully gets backed up with Time machine backups but not the Data drive.
I have tried everything I can to try to get it to work again and here are some of my steps taken:
    - Checked to see if the Data drive has not bee excluded from Time machine backup options.  No it hasn't been excluded.
    - Check Smart Status on all drives - all good.
    - Use Disk Util to verify all my drives - all good, no errors.
    - Stop Time machine, formatted the Time machine backup drive and restarted Time machine.  Still not backing up my data drive.
    - Reset Time machine by following http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html   - Still no change.
    - Remove the Data drive from Spotlight indexing with Spotlight - privacy settings and then re-add it to Spotlight indexing - Now it does a full backup, but no more incremental backups are created when files on the Data drive are changed.  And the full backup of the Data drive disappears from the Time Machine backup a few days later!
The Time machine logs just shows - "Will copy (Zero KB) from Data".
I have tried to follow the troubleshooting hints on http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html but can't seem to find any other clues to help me with my problem.
Does anyone else see this before and have any suggestions?

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.
