4.0.3 update killed my Safari
I did the download on the Safari 4 update 4.0.3 and now Safari won't even open. It will only open about half way then go no further. If I do a force quit it tells me Safari (not responding) so that I have to make it stop or it simply keeps spinning the wheels.
What gives?
After the update I shut down, restarted then did a Disk Utility permissions, shut down, restarted and now this. I should have know NOT to do the update as the last one took forever to get things working.
How can I get Safari 3 back?
PS...Using Camino to even post this.
I had the same problem with the same error message, I think it's the 3rd party plug-in Safari Adblock that was causing my problem.
I followed the instructions on Apple Support about what to do if Safari won't launch to diagnose the problem. I have now got it working. Here is the link to the article "Mac OS X 10.5: What you can do if Safari quits unexpectedly" at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594 .
First I tried moving the files in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins without success, however when I tried moving the files in /Library/Input Managers I got Safari working again. I had 1Password, Glims and Safari Ad Block folders in there. I have added back the 1Password and Glims folder so it looks like it's the Safari AdBlock Input Manager that is causing the problem. I haven't added it back in yet to confirm it's the offending Input Manager.

Since Safari update, ichat, itunes, safari and update don't work.
I've got a weird one . . .
I ran the software update this morning for the new Safari, as well as iTunes. At the end of the download, I got an error message saying iTunes worked, but the Safari update was not successful. It then made me restart. After restart, software update refuses to open, as do Safari, mail, iChat, and iTunes. Third party programs run fine, as do iCal, iPhoto, etc. Firefox works fine. I downloaded the Safari update package off Apple's site via Firefox, but the package "unexpectedly quits." I'm thinking the failed update screwed everything up, but if I can't open a package installer OR the software update program, how the heck am I supposed to fix it?
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on a Powerbook G4.Not so weird, Travis.
It is happening to many of us. G5 tower 10.4.11
So the update killed iChat, Mail, itunes, safari, dictionary any apple installer, software update, as well as programs like cocktail, onyx and many others too numerous to name here.
My update didn't have an error message.
Here is what I have done:
Dumped all the prefs, tried to find corrupted fonts=none, cleaned font cache, repaired permissions (I always do this before I install any apple stuff), repaired disk, did that from the main drive and from a laptop with the G5 as a target disk. Made new users=nothing.
Started in safe mode and used terminal to fsk the HD.
NOw I will try to install safari from the laptop to see if safari is the rascal.
Disappointed in the whole thing, basically I am stuck with no mail, no apple Tv, and although there are work arounds, this is not what I need, Thanks Apple! -
I downloaded an update for my Safari web browser to "snow leopard". When I click on the .dmg file, a window opens up with a .pkg file but when I click on the .pkg file I get a prompt saying that it doesn't know what program to open it with.
I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.

Latest Acrobat X Update Killed Com1
The latest Acrobat X update killed my Com1 port. Yes, I still use Com1 to communicate with my ham radio. So if any Adobe guy is reading the discussions in this form, please fix this bug. BTW, why do I have to call tech support, why can't I send you guys an e-mail.
. . . JohnBTo correct the port problem of Adobe PDF Printer after the application of A10.0.1 patch kindly follow the below steps (they require Admin privileges):
1. Go to Devices and Printers.
2. Right Click on the Adobe PDF printer and click on Remove Device (Win 7). This will delete the Adobe PDF printer.
3. Go to Programs and Features (Win 7)
4. Select Adobe Acrobat X Pro or Standard and click on Change
5. Select Repair and follow instructions to complete repair
6. After the repair is done you will have correct settings of Adobe PDF printer and also Adobe Acrobat version 10.0.1. -
MacOS X 10.4.9 Update Killed My Mac!
Today I tried to install the 10.4.9 update.
Something went wrong when installing the update and I got an error message saying that the installation was unsuccessful.
After restart my mac got stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and a wheel spinning forever.
Fortunately I fixed the issue: http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.htmlMost likely, you could have avoided this problem if
you had followed Apple’s instructions for properly
installing software updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software
updates
Note that Apple doesn’t mention anywhere the need to
repair permissions either before or after installing
a system update, not even for troubleshooting system
update issues. It’s the disk itself (i.e. the
filesystem) that should be verified/repaired
before installing anything. Note also that no
applications should be running while installing the
update and that you may experience unexpected results
if you have third-party system software modifications
(not normal applications) installed.
I have to call complete and utter BS on this. I have been a mac user for more than 3 years. I have updated the day of almost every major update since 10.3.1 and 10.4.9 is by far the most problem prone thing I have ever seen apple put out. I have never once had a single issue where my mac would not boot after the install of an update. Now I have updated both my MacBook and Intel Mac Mini and both were dead in the water after the install. A different software suite is on both systems, and there is no "intrusive" 3rd party software that should cause any trouble. Thanks to the instructions above I was able to get back on-line and running 10.4.9, but something really needs to be done about these issues. -
When I try to do an update of iTunes/Safari/Qtime, I get an "invalid signature" message on my PC (XP SP3).
You probably have run out of space, I would delete (or move to an external drive) things that aren't being used as much.

Kernel updates kill my luks encrypted system
All right, this is weird. I have a 64bit system with encrypted root, home and swap partitions. To setup I followed the wiki here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LUKS
My swap is encrypted like described here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LU … sk_support
Since the updates to kernel 3.1 each new kernel update kills my system. Pacman says while upgrading

So the generation of the initramfs seems to be ok.
But when I reboot this box, I get:
running hook [openswap]
device /dev/sda4 doesn't exist or access denied
running hook [resume]
waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/swapDevice
waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/mapper/root
root device /dev/mapper/root doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: unable to determine major/minor number of root device /dev/mapper/root
/dev/sda4 is my swap partition. Then I get dropped to a recovery shell which I can't use because my (usb) keyboard is not working.
Now the funny part. I start the box from a install cd and chroot into the existing installation. I do a
mkinitcpio -p linux
The initramfs is regenerated and it works again! What the hell is pacman doing other than regenerate the initramfs with my presets?

Last edited by Harey (2011-11-12 16:10:48)New kernel 3.1.1 did it again. My system hangs in initramfs after the reboot. Same as before: a simple rebuild without any changes fixed the boot process. This time I was able to backup the 'bad' initramfs before chrooting in and rebuilding.
it is very funny to see the content of the 'bad' initramfs image - it is nearly empty!

For some reason the initramfs built by pacman is missing all modules. To say it again, nothing changed, simple rebuilt by mkinitcpio -p linux!
This seems to be a bad bug...

I have an iPhone 4S with sprint. I had to replace my phone after the new update killed my wifi button and wouldn't let me turn my phone off. Since I've had my new phone, I haven't been getting 3G. I have tried resetting my networks, Turing airplane mode off/on and restarting my phone. Nothing seems to work. Any info on what I should do next would be great.
If you have set this phone up, then there would not necessarily be a solution here until you have been verify with the provider that everything is provisioned correctly on their end. Since the 3G comes from your cellular provider, if the settings are correct on the phone, then you should work with the carrier next.

10.5.8 Update Killed Mac Pro
I was prompted to apply updates for MacOS & Safari. 10.5.8 was the OS patch version. Dialogue to proceed and then status dialogue cam up with message 'Running Update Scripts' or words to that effect, and a progress bar, it sat at about 25% for over an hour, not budging, appeared to be hung. I powered off the LT, and when I powered back up I get what looks like a stack trace with errors(grey screen) and a message in the center of screen saying I need to hit the reset or power button to restart the machine. Of course when I do so the same thing happens. I sure hope there's a way to rescue this thing, it's a BUSINESS TOOL! I have a pretty recent Time Machine backup, but I don't know if that includes a system image, and besides it's on a USB drive, and the machine doesn't look like it's getting out of Run level 0, not getting very far at all into the boot sequence.
I've just had a very similar experience. Got prompted to do the 10.5.8 update, which downloaded fine. The reboot happened, and the progress bar ran to about 25% and stopped.
I gave it a ton of time ... went to a movie and came back, and it was still at 25%. So I did a forced restart, and it came up in a kernel panic that said the CPU and kernel were mismatched. Did all the standard tricks: unplugged the power cord for a while, reseated the graphics cards, drives and memory.
But here's the weird part: it won't boot from a Leopard CD either. I get the same error messages when that happens.
Any ideas?

Latest snow leopard update kills my browsers
Snow Leopard was running great until I downloaded the most recent update. Now Safari sometimes won't download pages (I get the ..can't connect.. message) unless I repeatedly reload. Then I may get a page with what looks like CSS code. Firefox does the same. I reinstalled the original OS disk but the problem is still there.
HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
For Safari...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
bpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If nothing above has helped, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.

I have a Mac 10.6.8 which on the last Adobe Flash update killed my sound.
I know nothing of computers - it is a glorified typewriter to me, so please advise how to remedy this in simple terms.
Technical terms are the death for me!Hi,
Could you please let us know some more details?
Please go to the following page and let us know the Flash Player version and browser you use: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html#main_Find_the_Flash_ Player_version_installed_on_your_machine
Do you mean to say you don't hear any sound at all?

Updated Lion an Safari won't open
Updated Lion an Safari won't open
Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects the type of hardware you're using and your version of OS X, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A statement such as "it doesn't work" conveys no information. If it did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead." Include the complete text of any error messages you saw and where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever. Also include the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any relevant information, but it didn't help, include details.
Post in the appropriate discussion area. Usually that means the area for the type of Mac you're using, if the problem is hardware-related, or for the OS X version you’re running, if it’s more software-related. Some other Apple technologies, including Safari, have their own discussion areas.
