4.0.5 Thrashing the hard disc

I start Safari and leave it sitting on about:blank. Do nothing. A few minutes later it starts thrashing away at my hard disc doing who knows what?! Close Safari and the thrashing immediately stops.
Needless to say I'm not letting it complete whatever it thinks its doing - I've let it run for 10 minutes and still it keeps accessing my hard disc.
Anyone know what it's doing and more importantly, how to stop it?
Thanks,
Geoff

OK it appears it's the "Fraudulent Site" checker (a.k.a. "Google Safe Browsing Service"). Whenever this is enabled ('Preferences' -> 'Security' -> 'Fraudulent sites') Safari thrashes away at my hard disc. Disable this and restart Safari and it doesn't happen.

Your content will only be where you put it.  It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone: File>Device>Transfer purchases.
You can import your pics taken with the iphone as you would with any digital camera.
You can e-mail the other pics to yourself, they will never be of the original quality.
You can out a unique contact and calendar entry on the computer.  You should get the option to merge the data when you sync.

I have scanned some black and white negatives into my computer(iMac) where they are stored on the hard disc as positives. When I import them into iPhoto to print they turn back into negatives. How do I turn them back into positives?

That's because you scanned them as B/W photos and iPhoto 08 doesn't support the grayscale color profile.  You can either rescan them as color photos or export them as originals out of iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and applhy this Automator application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB Profile, on them and then remimport into iPhoto. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar .  Be sure to read the warning on the website about not applying it on your only copies.

  • How can I save/write data on the hard disc of the Real-Time System?

I would like to acquire huge size of data via LabView Real-Time System.
Since data is so huge, I am now thinking that it might be good idea to
write/save data on the hard disc of the Real-Time System first and then
transfer the data file to a data processing PC using FTP etc.
If you know how to save/write data on the hard disc of the Real-Time System
(Ver. 7.1), please let me know.
    Thanks,

Just to add to Aitortxo's good answer,
Since you have only one Drive ( C:\) on your RT, just keep monitering the availible disc space.
After every few set of file writes keep transferring Backups delete these files, so that you  keep C:\ drive space for running your applications.

  • HT4859 how do i use the hard disc to store data

I find that my hard disc is huge but the Mac itself has a memory of 4 GB. I am new to Macs so this might be pretty basic... I used to just move items beween hard discs on my PC. Is there anyway to to do this on the Imac?

Nothing is held in RAM in the way you mean. We are dealing with three things here:
    1. Your Mac's Random Access Memory - this is only a working area, holding applications while they are running and files only while you are working with them: as it's not permanent you must save them to permanent storage:
    2. Your Mac's internal hard disk - usually called 'Macintosh HD' or something like that.
    3. It sounds as if you also have an external or secondary hard disk.
System files and applications will live on the internal hard disk, which is what you (usually) boot up from. Downloads go, basically, where you tell them to - the default is the Downloads folder in your Home Folder but you can perfectly well designate the external hard disk instead. You can save files to either disk, and you can copy files between them.

  • Erasing the hard disc completely

Before installing Leopard I would like to totally erase my emac hard disc to eliminate all traces of my current bank and money details. Does disc erase do this or can clever Norton or other software recover old data.
I also want to dispose of an early fruit flavoured imac OS8.6 and need to totally wipe the disc. Since the disc is not accessible as in a PC cabinet it is necessary to erase the disc electronically. Any advice please
    Richard

    Hey Richard,
I would like to totally erase my emac hard disc to eliminate all traces of my current bank and money details.
    Well check out this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303462
    I did this:
    "7-Pass Erase" option
Writes data over the entire disk seven times. This provides a highly secure erasure of disk data. A 7-Pass erase takes 7 times longer than a Zero Out Data erase."
It is supposed to meet DOD standards. On a 20 GB drive it took something like 8 hours. So 35 X??
Since the disc is not accessible as in a PC cabinet it is necessary to erase the disc electronically.
Well actually is is available but you have to remove the bottom and Faraday shield. However:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
That's the easiest way to do it.

  • System won't boot from the hard disc.

I can only find my install disk for 10.1.4 on my PBG4, but the operating system was 10.3.9
? Can I recover my files & operating system with the 10.1.4 CD & then download 10.3.9? (Assuming the 10.1.4 install is successful!)
    Hope someone can assist.
    Talkin tash

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
10.3.9 will only install on top of 10.3 retail if your Mac came with 10.1.4.
    10.3 retail looks like *
Unless the 10.1.4 disk includes hardware test or an Additional Applications installer, it isn't worth keeping. There is hardly anything compatible with 10.1.4 anymore.
No version of Mac OS X includes a true data recovery application, though their Disk Utility typically can restore images made as backup. Unfortunately 10.3.9 is already so far more advanced than 10.1.4, restoring an image may not be possible with the 10.1.4 installer. Why do you need to recover files? And what do you need to recover files from?

  • I changed the hard disc my library was stored on and iTunes cannot write to it

I recently replaced the HD my iTunes library was on from a 500GB to a 1 TB drive.  Although iTunes can see the media stored on the new drive and recognizes it as the drive containing my library, I cannot download my iTunes purchases to it.  It says I am not authorized to read or write to it.  In the drive properties, I am told I can both read and write.  How do I fix this problem?

Is the new HD formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)...

  • What sort of hard disc was in the Mac LC?

My old Mac LC won't boot - not surprising as it's been in the cupboard for years. I'd like a caddy to mount the hard disc to USB on my new Mac. Is this possible?

A little review of the startup sequence might be helpful.
The computer polls the devices connected to the motherboard to see what is there.  If it sees a system disk in the floppy drive, it will boot from that first.  If it sees a system disk on the hard drive it will start from that.  If it does not find a system folder it will show a question mark.  If you are not getting a question mark on the sreen, you have more serious issues.
If you lift the cover off the compter, you can listen to hear if the hard drive spins up.  If it does not spin up, you can drop the handle end of a screw driver on the round foil sticker that covers the center screw for the hard drive platters.  That may jar the platters and get some old lubricant to break loose.  This is a last ditch effort to get the platters spinning.  Use as a last resort.
The best thing to do before suspecting stuck platters is to test the drive bysticking the drive in another computer.  You can connect just the four wire power plug and turn the second computer on.
Lack of start up chimes is also not a sign of death.
Personally, I would take every connection apart and reconnect everything.  You may just have a bad connection that need the cleaning that occurs when disconnecting and reconnecting.  That goes for removing and reseating thejRAM, too.  Good luck.

  • Hard disc repair needed. how to start with the snow leopard dvd?

    Hi,
after a check with the apple hard disc program "festplattendienstprogramm" it found an error:
something like "invalid amount of file hard links". It suggests to boot from the installation dvd.
meanwhile I installed mac os lion, so I've got just the snow leopard dvd and tried to boot with holding down the C key before start up sound.
But the system always boots from the hard disc. Maybe it's a problem with the apple bluetooth keyboard?
holding down the c key didn't work (got the bt keyboard), and mac os lion is installed.
    Sincerely
    Sascha

    - the forum ate my post -
    Summarizing:
Backup any data that you do not have a backup of. Disk repairs are not guaranteed. They can fail or be unrepairable requiring formatting the drive and a clean installation.
Verify the smart status in disk utility. Highlight the drive. Read the status on the bottom of the window.
Off the top of my head, I don't know that there is a free utility to read the number of errors and how close it.
There is a utility called smartreporter that can help keep an eye on your hard drive.
There is no guarantee the drive is about to fail or keep going for years; but it is suspect you have to start from the install disc to attempt a repair. Could be due to improper shut down.

  • My iMac is running REALLY slow - could my hard disc be dying?

    I have a 27" iMac with a Core i7 chip and 8GB of RAM.
It has always worked really fast with absolutely everything I have tried with it.
It worked fast in Snow Leopard. I upgraded it to Lion in September and it still worked fast (though a tiny bit slower perhaps than Snow Leopard).
In the last week, the machine's speed has slowed to an absolute crawl and I am almost constantly getting the spinning beach ball.
By a crawl, I mean that opening iTunes can take five minutes. Opening the Applications folder inside Finder can take five minutes. During times of this slowness, the spinning beach ball animates and I can move the mouse cursor, but I cannot get any response from the machine.
The machine is so slow that it is basically unuseable - I cannot wait five minutes to open a document!
What is really odd is that the computer will be really slow for 4-5 minutes, and then for perhaps 40 seconds or so I will get maybe one minute where things work at normal speed, before the speed drops back to a crawl.
Even restarting the computer takes an age.
My theory is that something in the computer has malfunctioned - either the motherboard or the hard disc.
I have run a few disc utilities (Disk Utility, Apple Hardware Diagnostic, TechTool 5), and the SMART status of the hard disc appears to be good and all reports check back successfully - although they all take longer than I'd expect. Whether that means the hard disc is really fine or not, I'm not clear.
I had one other hard disc die on me once, and that just died and was gone, but if my hard disc is dying then the problem it is showing is intermittent, i.e. it is only working part of the time.
At present I am making a backup of the iMac hard disc by having booted the iMac in Firewire Target Disk mode and manually copying files across. However, so far it has only managed 1GB of about 432GB and is estimating that it will take 2 days to complete the task.
Has anybody got any advice - is the hard disc or the motherboard a likely culprit?
The machine is under warranty at least, but I can't figure out whether to drag the machine into an Apple Store, or to phone AppleCare and get them to pick it up. If the machine would be repaired while I waited at the Apple Store then that would be great but I doubt this would happen.
    Any advice?
P.S. I checked for runaway processes... nothing to find in Activity Monitor. CPU is about 5% max. Lots of free RAM. Hard disc is only half full.

How do you load lion onto an exteranl disk and boot from it as I would like to give that a try.
I presume its an external usb drive?
    thanks
    Hi,
I used an external hard disc - Western Digital MyBook 500GB drive.
All you do is run the Lion installer, which you can redownload from the Mac App Store if you've bought it. As part of the Lion installer it asks which drive you want to install to.
To save having to redownload the Lion installer every time, once the download has completed from the Mac App Store, but before you have run the installation process, you can extract the disc image and retain it for future use (if you don't extract the disc image, then it gets deleted at the end of the installation process and you'd have to redownload it again next time).

  • How to transfer my iTunes library from a hard disc to new computer?

Could anybody help me with this issue? I've tried everything I could without any succes...
My computer where I had my iTunes library (complete with many info and ratings) crashed and I lost all my archives. Luckly I had a copy of everything in an external hard disc. My iPod works fine with all the songs from that library. I bought a new computer, but now I cannot transfer the data of the library from the hard disc to the new computer.
I'd really appreciate if somebody could help me...
    Many thanks, Rui

Great! Very simple actually (once you know). The library is now corrected listed on iTunes, with my original playlists and the ratings.
But now how do I bring the music files? I've tried to import them from the hard disk, but iTunes didn't synchronize with the ones listed on the library, so there are duplicates of all songs and the ones I can play are not the ones on my playlists and with the ratings.
Do you have another brilliant solution?
    Thanks in advance
