4.1 - 5.1

Question

Why is this so difficult?
I want to migrate from 4.1 to 5.1. According to the docs, the only way to do it is to have the 5.1 running on the same machine as the 4.1. I intend to retire the machine the 4.1 is running on, all I want to do is migrate the data. Is there a way to move/migrate a 4.1 to 5.1 where they are running on different machines?
I tried to export the 4.1 data. It created a nice ldif file that contains all the data I need on the 5.1. I then asked the 5.1 to import the data and it said there were no records in the data file (according to the status logs) yet the file was complete and large.
What is the easiest way to do this?

that should not be a problem at all...
(assuming no schema changes between the 2)
install 5.1 on a seperate box.
do a db2ldif on the 4.1
do a ldif2db on the 5.1 (disable schema checking u can turn that on later...)
restart 5.1
set it up a 5.1 in 4.x compatability mode
ensure that you have the server to process reads/refer writes so all writes go to the 4.1 server
setup replication between the 4.1 and 5.1
ensure that all your clients are pointing to the 5.1 server
disable 4.1 (stop slapd)
change 5.1 to process reads and writes
diable compatability mode...
done
