4.1 update completely screwed my proximity sensor

I have an iPhone 4 and never suffered any issue with the proximity sensor.
After the 4.1 update the behavior is totally random. I make several calls and I saw
the screen turn on and off permanently with the phone a half an inch of my head.
I also noted that the apparently solution implemented by Apple to solve this issue
is add some delay in the operation of the sensor. I see that the response is slow.
Any one with this problem too?
Thanks!

Test 3 is the main test, simply because it is fairly consistent and is one of the quickest ways to get the worst results. The other tests are essentially variations, such as the one where it shows the problem even if you don't move it fast after the screen comes on.
You're the first one to provide feedback with something besides 4.1 so I really appreciate it.
Okay, so it turns off between 1.25 and 1.5. Almost every test I've done or I've seen reported with 4.1 has it turn off at 2 inches. I have had as high as 2.5 once and been a bit below 2 a couple times. If I ever got down to 1.5, it was only once.
This fits various comments made when the phone first came out - that the screen lights up sooner than prior phones and I think your numbers match some of those reports.
For this part of the test, if you haven't upgraded yet, I would just say run it a few more times from scratch - I don't even know if that OS does a reset if pulled far away for a few seconds, though I suspect it does. The repetition helps us recognize if one try is giving unusual results.
You said you dropped the card and that the screen reactivated at 5/8". Did you just do that once? Or, after it lit up again, did you drop it again and see if it kept getting lower? This is what I did on my video - I could keep getting it lower and lower, at least to a certain point.
Also, when you raise it and the screen comes on, you could also slowly put it back down to see where it is before turning OFF again. I suspect that if it turned on at 5/8" that it will stay on down below a half inch. That is, ultimately, the critical figure.
If you really want to take the time, you could also just try making some regular call and see if it acts up (I find I need to turn the brightness up all the way to really see it without having to make a special effort to look out of the corner of my eye).
But some people won't have the problem affect them in normal use right away (some almost never). So, unfortunately, a limited testing time on real calls only tells us anything if it is so bad for you that it hits you right away!
When you do upgrade, same tests so we can see how the numbers change. Assuming you aren't one of those who have it get worse, I would expect that your starting distances are higher and, maybe, it either takes more up and down action to get it as low or it never gets as low - or both. Knowing how low you can get it now is really important for comparison later.
Of course, once updated, you have the experience in the real world on every call you make thereafter for that part.
Now, I really hope you don't start with a working phone (from the numbers you gave so far, I would say it isn't) and then, after 4.1, have it stop working right.
But if that happens, the data you can then give from this test will be the most important we could have at this point.
Thanks.

  • HT5815 The update completely screwed up my computer! Now it won't start-up - it only goes into Terminal then shuts down. After three tries Techtool Pro opens in e-disk mode to repair the problem (which it can't find a solution). Great Apple - thanks !

Has this affected anyone else ?

Now is there a chance you could find another moment to explain WHY TTP is such a problem ?  I've used it for more than 10 years and it's only been an asset.
I realize you considered my response unhelpful, but my answer remains unchanged: uninstall it.
You explained that your Mac was unable to start. In that case the Apple Support article is the appropriate place to begin troubleshooting.
You also asked if anyone else had been similarly affected. Lacking an overwhelming response from a representative sample of millions of Mac users running the latest OS X release, any premise that the update caused this problem must be logically flawed. On the other hand OS X updates will very frequently reveal incompatibilities with third party software, especially those that modify the Mac's operating system. Techtool Pro is one of many that do.
TTP is also unnecessary in that it conveys no benefit. An example is the following: http://www.micromat.com/support-45/knowledgebase/ttp7kb/techtool-pro-has-found-b ad-blocks-what-do-i-do7
Solution: erase the volume, if it happens again replace the drive. Really?
TTP and similar utilities may be used to "repair" a damaged HD for the purposes of extracting whatever data remains intact, after an irretrievable data loss event has already occurred. Your very complaint illustrated that it was unable to do that. Conclusion: it's worthless.
... I decided to run the Mac Pro in Target Disk mode and run Disk Utility from my laptop on the suspect disk - it repaired (or so it says) the disk and now I'm copying ("restoring") all contents onto another disk that I can run further tests on later.
To be clear, Apple's Disk Utility accomplished what TTP could not.
Most likely, your HD is already in a failed state, so I don't recommend relying upon it. I do recommend that you extract its data, then replace the drive.
A failed HD will fail again, every time. Hard disks are cheap, and backups are essential. Having a reliable backup strategy makes events like this a non-event. If you want to keep the HD in service despite these cautions, I recommend you erase it as recommended by Micromat, do not reinstall TTP, and if it fails again replace it - also as recommended by Micromat.
I maintain many Macs for many people and have done so for many years. None of them have TTP or any similarly clever utilities installed. It's your Mac, do with it what you will, but if you choose to install such junk you own the consequences, which may be that it trashes your Mac.

  • Continued Proximity Sensor Issue After 4.1 Upgrade

I was told by Apple Care and the Genius Bar that the proximity sensor issue was going to be resolved with the new 4.1 update. "This was after I exchanged the new IPhone 4 two times prior to the update. When the update arrived, it stated the items that would be resolved with the update which included the proximity sensor software fix. This update did not fix the issue and I exchanged my IPhone 4 for the third time with the same issue but slightly worse. Same issue exists with my cheek placing calls on hold, pressing numbers or even worst, placing them on speaker while having a private conversation. I have restored this phone and re-did everything from scratch and yet have the same issue. Is any one else having the same problems that I am facing, or have I just got four bad phones in a row? HELP.

Since I know for fact, it's possible to have a phone without PS issues, I would go to the Apple store, and get a replacement, but I wouldn't leave the store until you're sure the new phone doesn't have the same PS problems. Maybe the Apple Gods were smiling on me, but both my phones were bought on launch day and neither have suffered. 4.1 didn't have a negative effect. And I know people who did have the problem, which 4.1 resolved. You should have a phone that works too.......

  • Will the return policy be extended for the proximity sensor fix?

I've had a lot of problems with my new iphone, but the worst one is the proximity sensor. On 80% of my calls my cheek has accidentally muted, placed on hold, hung up on, called someone else, and/or started composing an email. The phone is unusable for me in this condition. If the proximity sensor gets fixed, I'd keep the phone. If it doesn't, then I can't keep it. My phone shipped on July 6. Will the proximity sensor fix be released before my 30 day return policy expires? Will the policy be extended until the fix comes out?

No one here knows any more than what was previously announced by Apple. We are just iPhone users like yourself - Apple doesn't officially participate in this forum.
A future software update to fix the proximity sensor problem was announced, but no date was mentioned. The 30 day return policy applies to all iPhones, for any reason. No extensions beyond 30 days have been announced.

  • How can i undo the latest ios7 software update for my iphone4? It completely screwed up my phone!

I updated my iPhone 4 a few days ago to the latest operating system, iOS7. I've always proceed with the operating system updates because I assumed there were security fixes included as well as other fixes that were supposed to make the system run better. I haven't had any significant problems with updates in the past, except for some minor differences in appearance that didn't bother me.  This time but the update appears to have completely screwed up my phone.
My first complaint is, where the **** did all of my apps go?? I paid for them, and now they're gone. Are they hiding in the iCloud? I had over 3 screens of apps, and now I've only got 1 screen.
My second complaint is, what was wrong with the appearance of the interface and icons in the previous version? The new system has gone with opaque pastel-colered icons that, frankly, I don't like as much as the icons in the previous system.  And why does there have to be a gray band on the bottom row of icons?
My third complaint is everthing else on the phone is screwed up. Nothing works like it did before. Most of the photos I had on my phone have disappeared (iCloud??) Granted, my complaints about the appearance may seem trivial, but this is really annoying.
Can I reverse the iOS7 "downgrade" and go back to the good old days with the previous version when everything worked just fine and I was able to access all of my apps?

  • Proximity sensor after 4.01 update...

How are other peoples experiences after the newest update, concerning the proximity sensor? If you were already having problem with the sensor, have they improved at all?
My experiences have not been good at all thus far. Same glitches as before.
Pretty disappointing. I'm going to call Apple tomorrow and see what they say. I've been putting off calling them, with the hope that this update would actually fix the issue (as stated by Jobs). Now I'm just hoping I didn't miss my window to return my phone (it's now been over 30 days). With this issue, my "phone" is truly unusable. Every other aspect of the iPhone 4 is absolutely astounding, and I love it. But the main feature of the device (the phone) is rendered broken as of right now, IMO.

Called Apple. The gentleman was very helpful and polite. Seemed very accepting of the problem and wanted to get it fixed for me. We scheduled a appointment for the Genius Bar at a Apple Retail Store. The Rep said that most likely the Genius Bar employees will find it to be defective hardware and will issue a new phone right then and there. I'm really hoping for a new phone (not refurb) without this issue.
The antenna issue I am able to "deal" with. But this proximity sensor stuff is a deal-breaker.

  • Proximity sensor doesn't work correctly after 4.3 update

The proximity sensor disables the screen when I place the phone near my face when in a call, that's fine.
However, it never re-enables it when I move it away. This happened prior to the 4.3 update, however I could press the home button and it would light the screen up.
That doesn't happen anymore, so I can not hang up a phone call once the screen goes off.
    This is a major defect

I have the same issue with a 2 month old Galaxy S4 and I noticed it after the last push from Verizon whihc may have been the 4.3 update. Proximity sensor won't light up the screen again when you move it away from your face.  Verizon told me to do a factory reset, Samsung told me to do a soft reset then clear the cache.  Did all and still have same problem. Had a call yesterday and person on other end did not hang up so I had no way to hand up on my end.  Am turning off the proximity senson durring calls for now but it will use up more of the battery with the screen lit more.  They need to fist it.

  • Proximity sensor stopped working after update

I updated to the new ios 7.1 and now my proximity sensor doesn't turn my screen off! So annoying while on the phone. Help!?

Remove any screen protectors or case on the device, does the problem continue?
If no screen protector/case or that does not resolve the issue, basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Graphics completely screwed up after 10.6.2 update

    Hi All,
I was using Numbers 08 earlier this evening and the graphics all looked fine. After allowing Software Update to install the 10.6.2 update tonight, and restart, I opened up Numbers to find that the graphics boxes, including pie charts, etc, are completely screwed up. And this is even true with the Apple templates in Numbers. With me doing nothing to them, the page looks nothing like the template sample should, or as displayed in the thumbnail window.
I restarted a second time to see if this might help, but it did not. Same results.
    Any thoughts???
    -Sol
    Anyone else seeing this.

    Hi Peggy,
Thanks for the reply and the suggestions. I did run 'Repair Permissions' but that had no effect on the issue. I did your suggestion of downloading the 10.6.2. 'Combo Update' from Apples download page, and that did indeed solve the problem. All Numbers graphics look normal again.
I'll keep that one in mind in the future.
    Thank You!
    -Sol

Does Apple even realize this 3.6 update has completely screwed up iChat and the ability to use the screen share feature????
After 40+ hours of trying to solve the problem, I finally confirmed 100% that this update is the issue, and fixed it by restoring to 3.5.3.

  • Verizon, please help! LG G2 proximity sensor bug!

Verizon, please help, the update that you required me to do on 09/23/14 has a huge bug in it and I am fearful it has not only screwed up my proximity sensor but who knows may even have compromised the security of the phone.  The proximity sensor does not respond in dimly lit rooms at all.  You have to trick it by slowly swiping your finger across it just to hang up a phone call.  The power off button does not respond unless you hold it down to do a soft reset.  The "knock-on" feature does not work in dimly lit rooms either.  This is so frustrating as it was working perfectly before the update.  Please either send a fix update or allow us to resort back to the old software.  This phone is less than a year old and I do pay for the warranty, however have been warned that all replacement phones are just "refurbished" phones that may have worse problems.
So, please VERIZON, step up and fix this issue.  I have been into your store to discuss with sales guy and he said he would not file a warranty claim just yet.   This is crap.....please advise.

If you repair your phone it is a refurb phone.

  • Proximity sensor reacting too close causing droppe...

I have two Nokia Lumia 800 phones and they react too close with proximity sensor causing screen to become active so when I am outdoors in brighter light calls are auto-dropped when my cheek touches the end call button on the screen. I have compared my two Nokias in Diagnostics and they react at exact same distance (around 3 cm) and I have also compared them side-by-side to another LG E900 Windows Phone in their diagnostics where it reacts 2 cm further away (around 5 cm). On the LG calls are never dropped by mistake. Would it be possible for you to change this distance in upcoming firmwares so calls are not dropped as easily?
If I am indoors in darker light or at night it is not common to see it, but during summer time and during more light it is more common I have noticed.
Workaround I have currently is to disable the screen auto on/off feature by pressing power button once after answering or calling. if you do this manually it is disabling proximity sensor screen on/off until you press the power button again.

I find it completely ludicrous that Apple can interject on this thread and say it's received too many posts and has to be shut down and a "new" thread started. Really now? Seriously? Couldn't they also simply pop in and post 'hi guys, we hear you and are working on it' ...or something to that effect? That's my main complaint really is the deafening silence. What they're basically telling us is to complain all we want, if we don't like the phone then return it for a refund ...that is if you still have your original defective phone, for all you that already swapped phones, you're beat and are stuck with our mistake for the next 2 years when you'll be upgrade eligible again. ...WOW, thanks for the statement without technically releasing one. ...I think we're all left in the dark because Apple really doesn't know what is going on with the sensor, they can't and or won't release a statement without getting the facts straight. ...but we all know one fact is straight...the sensor is dysfunctional and that alone deserves an acknowledgement. How are we to have faith in Apple to fix the issue when we're left to believe they don't think there is one.
...btw update on "my fix" ...deleting all your photos and putting the phone in your arm pit and then under your pillow is only a temporary solution, for mine sensor is on the fritz again. ...shaking my head, if only this were
    funny.
