I have an old i-pod touch running 4.2.1 for my 5 year old and I can't find any apps. Any suggestions for finding older apps for him?

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

One of your kids made an in app purchase that you did not know about. Some apps include in app purchase and games do this quite often. The game itself is free, but you might have to purchase additional items to enhance the game or to unlock certain levels.
You can prevent this from happening in Settings>General>Restrictions>In App Purchases>Off.

Kids' apps bought from IPad , including some free ones to try out, all lost sound recently. These worked fine before since We got them. Couldn't work out the reasons. We have tried reset, restore the IPad and reinstalled these apps but still without success in solving the sound issue. We tried YouTube to see if the sound issue is ipad issue and it youtube works fine and it has sound.
We also doubt it could be the apps issue. because If it is only a few apps lost the sound, it seems maybe it is the relevant apps issue. But when there are so many apps all lost sound, it seems to indicate a problem other than just individual apps. What could it be? Please share your experience and way to solve it if you can. Much appreciated.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. You can turn on Ask to Buy to require approval for purchases initiated by any family member who is under 18 years old.*

Tap Settings > iCloud > Family, and tap your family member's name.
Turn on Ask to Buy.
OS X Yosemite
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Click Manage Family and select your family member's name.
Select Ask to Buy.
Ask to Buy is enabled by default for any children under 13 years old, and can be enabled during the setup process for any children 13-17 years old.* You can't turn on Ask to Buy for adults.
If you don't wish to be billed for purchases initiated by a specific adult family member, you can remove that family member from the family group.
*Ages may vary by country or region.
Family Sharing requires a personal Apple ID signed in to iCloud and iTunes. My 3 year old has downloaded a £70 app can I get my money back? He has somehow purchased, 'vault of gems' on Mini Pets. It seems unbelievable that an upgrade to a kids app is £70!!! I suppose this is how these robbers make money.. Any help appreciated.

My 3 year old and I downloaded, 'mini pets'. app. Whilst playing he managed to purchase a 'vault of gems' for a staggering £70!!!!
Can we get our money back? I can't believe there was no security or the iTunes password to submit and how is an app upgrade £70 these people are rob dogs.

Apple allows apps to list themselves as "Free" if the initial download is free, even if the app has kid-oriented inducements for costly in-app purchases. The in-app purchases are almost always ridiculous, over-priced game accessories, of which your example of "vault of gems for £70" is right up there. It is way too caveat emptor for my taste, but each consumer can form their own opinion on that.
To Apple's credit, they have a good record of granting refunds providing you explain the extenuating circumstances (purchase by a minor) and only ask once. Contact iTunes Customer Service.
And immediately, you need to place restrictions on the devices. The restrictions are off by default (caveat emptor!), so you need to take action to place them. See this document: iOS: Understanding Restrictions

Ios 7 kids apps parental gate/permission

I'm developing an app for kids for ios and android.
After uploading to appStore, my app was reviewed and i recieved the following message:
Apps primarily intended for use by kids under 13 must get parental permission
or use a parental gate before allowing the user to link out of the app or engage in commerce
How can i add this parental gate to my app?
I saw some examples online (very few) for other developing languages, of a pop-up with a password, but nothing came up for air.

We have used a couple of techniques. One is to put up a set of numbers and ask the user to type a sequence of four numbers, which we show as words (the keys are just the numbers). That has been approved in a few apps.
The other technique we used hasn’t been submitted to the app store yet, I don’t think, shows a “parents” button that you have to drag into a corner as indicated by some text that briefly appears when you touch the button.
So, a parental gate can be anything you like, it just has to present a question that is hard to guess what the answer is, you need to be able to read and understand some instructions, and the hope is that very young kids won’t guess what to do.

Multiple iphones and unwanted kids apps

We are a multiple iphone/ipod touch family that all share the same apple account and the same computer to sync them. That works great and any app that we purchase can be shared among the rest. The problem is that my son gets a LOT of apps and when he syncs they get added to the library. The next time I sync I get 2 or 3 screens worth of apps added to my iphone automatically. I have to go through and uncheck them all in itunes and then resync.
Is there any way to set it so that new apps are unchecked by default and I have to manually check the ones that I want?

No, there is not. By default, each phone synced to that library gets all the new apps.

How to manage my kids apps on different devices when they dont have an Apple ID

I have been using my apple id to download apps, games etc... for my sons ipod touch. Hes not old enough to have his own id and now it looks like a credit card is required anyways? Whats the deal with that? I want to be able to keep my sons games and apps off of our ipad and visa versa when I sync each of the devices. I have him set up on our imac with his own login, but what's the best way for me to keep our apps, movies and music separate if I have to use my apple id to download for both devices?

Recently purchased Touch 5G and want to give my old Touch to my grandson who is five. Anyone aware of any games that work on v. 4.2.1 that I can add to the old Touch? Looked in the app store and the ones I tried wouldn't download because they won't work on this older version.

Don't select them to sync. It will only sync what you tell it to.
Open itunes, plug in iphone, go to each tab and select whatever you like, sync.

How do I transfer apps from one ipad to another

Let me start off by saying that itunes confuses the crap out of me. I am a moderately saavy tech person and even spent a morning watching youtube tutorials a while back and still I can barely figure what to do in itunes. I get by.
So, my son had an ipad and we have bought an app through the app store that was around 30$. It was an educational thing, so an important one. Got him a new ipad yesterday and now I need that old app to be transferred onto the new ipad. Called the app company who said I needed to do it through itunes. So I hooked up the old ipad to my computer, it opens up itunes and asks if I want to update. I figure yes. Start the update. Says it will take 6 hours. Cancel the update. I click on the ipad icon in the top left and see at the bottom of the next screen, a sync option. I figure, ok, I need to sync this so that the app is now on my computer so I can then transfer it to the new ipad, right? I sync. I unplug the old and plug in the new ipad. I sync again, thinking, ok, now it should be there, right? Nope. I check the app list....it's not there. 5 dozen other stupid kid apps making food and hairstyles...no educational app. I plug the old one back in...this is useless. I can't figure out how to see the educational app on the old ipad through my computer....

Syncing copies content from your computer's iTunes to the device.
If the app is still in the store then you should be able to redownload it directly on the new iPad via the Purchased tab in its App Store app.
Or, to copy the app from the old iPad (and other any other download that's only on the iPad) connect it to your computer's iTunes and use the File > Devices >Transfer Purchases menu option to copy it over :
To sync it to the new iPad, connect it and select it in iTunes, and select its Apps tab e.g. (if using the current version of iTunes)
On the right-hand side of the screen find that app in the listbox of apps and click the 'Install' button next to it, and then click the apply/sync button bottom right to install it onto the iPad.

We just got a second iPad. Previously our single iPad was registered under my Apple ID. My wife downloaded lots of apps for the kids on our old iPad. Now I want to associate the old iPad with my wife's Apple ID, but be able to keep all the kids apps on it that were previously purchased under my apple ID. I don't really want any of the kids apps on the new iPad - especially since I will usually have it with me at work. Is there any way to do this?

You can't associate purchased apps with another Apple ID. The apps are tied to the ID that was used to purchase them.
If you sign in on the iPad with the ID that purchased the apps - then you can download them again using the ID that is associated with those purchases.
