4.2 Windows reporting free space incorrectly

I "upgraded" to 4.2 now my Windows Vista 64bit is reporting a 52.5 GB iPad.
I purchased a 32 GB iPad.... Why is it reporting as 52.5GB total capacity?
I have not yet tried other computers. I have a screen shot but I do not see how I can post it here.

HI,
Restart your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
And restart your PC.
After you have restarted both, connect the iPad to the PC, launch iTunes. Select Summary in the menu. Hopefully the capacity will read correctly now.

  • Difference in reporting free space on my drive

    Hi all,
I have a macbook pro 2011 running Lion on a 500GB HDD. I am having a small issue in reading how much free space do I have on my hard drive.
The status bar in the Finder window reports:
    DiskUtility.app reports:
I don't have any partitions on the hard drive (other than what Lion creates on it's own) and "Macintosh HD" is the only drive I have. I do use time machine and I have already disabled local backups but the difference in free space stays. I am just not sure what is causing this huge difference. If it was a couple of GBs I'd happily ignore but this is more than 80GB.
    Any idea?

    malikons wrote:
the next day Finder synced with DiskUtility automagically. I think it takes time to remove the local backups.
Yes, especially on a busy system, and if there were a lot of files involved.
I rebooted my macbook into recovery mode and fixed the hard drive errors. So, I believe, fixing the HDD errors and disabling local backups eventually fixed the issue.
Yup, directory errors can cause all sorts of weirdness.

  • Determine Drive Info From Crystal Reports - Free Space & Drive Size

I am looking for a way to determine drive information in crystal reports.
I know you can report on files and directories but I'm looking to report:
    Drive Size
    Free Space
Is it possible to use Visual Basic or Crystal commands to provide this info?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Please re-post if this is still an issue to the Legacy Application Development SDKs Forum or purchase a case and have a dedicated support engineer work with you directly
No, Crystal Reports does not have any system API's. Search VB help file for more info on accessing drive space info.

  • Tiger reporting hard drive free space incorrectly.

A client of mine has an iMac G5 running Tiger. For some reason it is reporting the free drive space as incorrect.

    This may happen sometimes if:
    1. You use Carbon Copy Cloner and force quit a clone before it is finished. It will leave something behind in Finder's Go menu -> Go to Folder -> Enter in the field:
    /Volumes/
    and click on Go.
    2. This may happen if you have an old version of the MacAlly iShock drivers. There was a situation where its logfiles would suddenly grow exponentially.
Those are two things I'm aware that leave behind huge piles of debris that don't clean up after a restart.
Burning CDs and DVDs if interrupted may leave behind large temporary files, though I don't know where that would be, and typically when you restart the computer that clears up.
It may be possible that your client accidently hit the Duplicate keyboard shortcut (command-D) while having a very large folder selected, thus actually making himself twice as big a folder somewhere. Use the program Whatsize to determine where the largest data source is:

  • Time Machine incorrectly reporting free space

I'm seeing this on Mavericks (retina MBP, 500GB SSD about 60% utilized) .
I've got a AFP network share that I copied a clean 800GB sparesebundle to. I use Disk Utility to mount and verify it, and it says, 650MB used, which means it's essentially 99% empty.
I unmount and attempt a backup with this disk. Almost immediately Time Machine reports that only 97GB free of the 800GB disk and can't continue because it needs ~275GB (a first time backup).
I unmount and remount it with Disk Utility and sure enough, it says it only has 97GB free. I re-run repair and the disk then reports 640MB used again. No matter what, Time Machine reports that only 98GB is free even immediately after I repair and even erase the Time Machine disk!
    This is repeatable and reproducable.
    The sparsebundle was created with:
hdiutil create -size 800g -type SPARSEBUNDLE -nospotlight -volname "Backup of My Mac" -fs "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" -verbose [myhostname[.sparsebundle
rsync'd to the remote linux server that us running netatalk3 to share that volume.
I am mounting it as afp://mylinuxbox/TimeMachineBackup
This all works, disk utility recognizeses and validates the disk.
    Freshly erased:
    641MB used, ~840GB available.
I unmount the disk and the sparsebundle.
    I attemped a backup:
I go to Disk utility, mount the disk and it reports:
I repair the disk, says its ok and the disk space returns to "normal". I can repeat this process endlessly to the same result. No matter what I try (erasing, new sparsebundle, etc) TM always says it's on;y ~90GB free.

Actually, I can shorten this down to just:
Mount TimeMachineBackup disk, it reports ~95GB free.
Repair it, it reports 800+GB free
    Unmount it
Remount it, it again reports ~95GB free.
    Rinse. Repeat.

  • FREE SPACE Inconsistency

    Hi,
I am using the following SQL to report on free space from a production database and it has reported free space incorrectly two days in a row even though nothing was deleted
    SELECT NVL(b.tablespace_name, NVL(a.tablespace_name,'UNKNOWN')) "Tablespace",
    ROUND(Mbytes_alloc,0) "Allocated MB",
    ROUND(Mbytes_alloc-NVL(Mbytes_free,0),0) "Used MB",
    ROUND(NVL(Mbytes_free,0),0) "Free MB",
    ROUND( ((Mbytes_alloc-NVL(Mbytes_free,0))/Mbytes_alloc * 100 ),2) "% Used",
    ROUND(Mbytes_maxalloc,0) "Max Allocated MB"
    FROM
    (SELECT SUM(bytes)/1024/1024 Mbytes_free,
    MAX(bytes) /1024/1024 largest,
    tablespace_name
    FROM sys.dba_free_space
    GROUP BY tablespace_name
    ) a,
    (SELECT SUM(bytes)/1024/1024 Mbytes_alloc,

    tablespace_name,
    COUNT(*) data_files
    FROM sys.dba_data_files
    GROUP BY tablespace_name
    )b
    WHERE a.tablespace_name (+) = b.tablespace_name
    ORDER BY 5 DESC;
On the Thursday, running the script reported the USERS tablespace as:
    Thursday:
    allocated mb: 44266
    used mb:     43977
    free mb: 289
    % Used: 99.35%
    maxsize mb: 69632
    On Friday, the script reported:
    allocated mb: 44266
    used mb: 43412
    free mb: 854
    % Used: 98.07%
    maxsize mb: 69632
Why is it reporting a difference in FREE MB over two days when nothing has been deleted?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

You can prove no objects have been deleted by 1 - implementing auditing on tables and indexes so that all create, drops, and alters will be logged and available via the dba_audit_trail and associated views or 2 - You can take a snapshot of the objects assigned to the tablespace, store it in a table, and then the next day compare the contents of dba_segmetns verse the snapshot displaying any dropped or new objects. You could also capture size changes allowing you to show where free changes came from and also where free extents were consumed.
I think DDL auditing is the best approach and that most all DDL should be audited on production databases. You should not be creating and dropping tables as part of normal production processing. I am not a big fan of DML auditing. However I have seen developers who write code that creates and drops tables. Generally I get the drop and create replaced with a call to a truncate procedure.
You customer may not trust the audit results so you may want to set up auditing and perform option 2 as proof. Once you have proved your point then all you should need going forward is auditing; however, you may find running a option 2 process that tracks object extent changes useful as a space management tool especially if you do not have the EM Diagnostic and Performance Pack licenses so you cannot access the AWR (10g+).

  • "Not enough free space" for my music. But there is.

Long time iPod/iPhone user here, but first time encountering this.
Until now I've always had iPods with sufficient memory to hold my entire music library, but this time (to save money) I bought the 16GB iPhone 4S and for the first time I'm having to pick and choose what I want to carry around with me. So I created a playlist in iTunes and have selected to only sync that playlist.
But here's an oddity: the capacity bar on the screen in iTunes suggests I can put that playlist on with 1.43GB to spare. But when I try to sync the iPhone it tells me ther's not enough space. See screenshot below.
    Any ideas?
Posted to both iPhone and iTunes forums.

Hmm, changing the drive letter usually works if the ipod is reporting available space incorrectly.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493
+iTunes and Windows Explorer report the wrong amount of available space on iPod.+
Your music library portion might only have 20GB, but what about podcasts, music, & photos? That could be the other 20GB it is saying it doesn't have room for.
Try syncing selected playlists and get it down to under 40 GB. You're right, you can't ignore it, but you can work around it.

  • R&R v4.31 & free space

Greetings! I've been using Rescue & Recovery v4.31 with my X220T successfully for a while. It stopped backing up last night & even the manual trigger this morning didn't work. While looking through the log file in c:\swshare there are entries that seem to state the cause of error:
    Sat Mar 03 11:04:21 2012 RescueRecovery: Backup failed. Free Space High=0x0000010A Low=0x66652000.
Interesting enough the X220T has a 320GB drive & the external drive R&R is backing up to is a 2TB drive that has about 1.01TB free.
So is something reporting the free space incorrectly? Or is the problem elsewhere?
    Thank you for your suggestions!

    someotherguy,
I'm current away from homebase so I can't get listing from "view all backups" but I hadn't changed the default so I thought it was set at 5. I know I may have missed some but I have it scheduled to backup every weekend (overnight). I think the merge was fine b/c I saw these entry when the backup were *supposedly* successful (on couple occassions I went through a restore of a file as backup is only good if one can actually restore <g>):
    Sat Feb 25 01:46:11 2012 RescueRecovery: Running: C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\br_funcs.exe merge destination="G:\RRbackups\SZ\81240DD79951CB11-9B6ACD7F807BD70D" drive=C: pw=0 uuid=0 level=2

In retrospect now I understand that 'merge' was the root cause last year too as incrementing that max number was the temp workaround.
When I get back to homebase I'll get the list of backups kept by R&R. Looking again at the rr log it seems like I restarted on Nov. 19th after the prior incident & did backups on the following dates: 11/26, 12/3, 12/10, 12/18, 12/25, 12/31, 1/8, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/17, 2/25, 3/2 (failure starts).
If zipping up the *whole* swshare will still help to uncover why the backups get corrupt (leading to merge failure) please let me know. If there are no PII in that directory then I can zip the folder & put in dropbox.
Thank you for your continued help!

  • Free space of mdf and ldf does not match with database free space

In SSMS i saw file size related properties and found below details for one database. Here values does not match with other properties. Here size of the mdf, ldf and total size matches with other values under each window. But Available free space of mdf and ldf
if added then it does not equal to Available free space shown in shrink database window and free space shown in database properties. This is true for any database. Why is it so? Please can anyone explain the logic behind this?
    Under database properties:
    Size: 91.31 MB
    Space available:13.40 MB
    Under database file properites:
    mdf size:17 MB
    ldf size:75 MB
    under shrink database:
    currently allocated size:91.31 MB
    Available free space:13.40 MB
    under shrink file-for data file:
    currently allocated size:16.38 MB
    Available free space:12.63 MB
    under shrink file-for log file:
    currently allocated size:74.94 MB
    Available free space:55.62 MB

    Hi,
Database properties and database shrink show the total (log+data) values. Others show the individual sizes, log and data separately.
    I hope it helps.

This does not answer my question. If you add allocated space of mdf and ldf it equals to database allocated size. But i am asking why this ldf and mdf free space together(when added 55.62+12.63 ) does not equal to database free space?

  • Doubt in considering temp tablespace's free space

    Hi All,
    Database: oracle 11.2
    Operating System: AIX
I want to know how much free space available in my temp tablespace
    I ran below scripts
    select sum((bytes_free)/1024/1024/1024) GB from v$temp_space_header
    +52.904296875+
    select (tablespace_size)/1024/1024/1024 tablespace_size_in_gb,
    +(allocated_space)/1024/1024/1024 allocated_space_in_gb,+
    +(free_space)/1024/1024/1024 free_space_in_gb+
    from dba_temp_free_space
    tablespace_size_in_gb: 98.9990234375
    allocated_space_in_gb: 46.0947265625
    free_space_in_gb:151.81640625
So my doubt is which one from above two script gives actual free space information ?
Also in dba_temp_free_space view why free space size > tablespace size ?

v$temp_space_header shows you how big the temp tablespace has got since the database was restarted. It doesn't give you the current free/used space.
See the link for dba_temp_free_space, but I think it may be the way it reports free space which is why you're seeing it as more than the actual tablespace. As you can see form the description "space that is currently allocated and available for resuse" is calculated for both allocated space and free space.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28320/statviews_5056.htm
    >
ALLOCATED_SPACE = space that is currently allocated and used + space that is currently allocated and available for reuse
FREE_SPACE = space that is currently allocated and available for reuse + space that is currently unallocated>
I use the below script which I've plagiarised from somewhere ages ago to get the used/free temp space.
    SELECT   A.tablespace_name tablespace, D.mb_total,
             SUM (A.used_blocks * D.block_size) / 1024 / 1024 mb_used,
             D.mb_total - SUM (A.used_blocks * D.block_size) / 1024 / 1024 mb_free
    FROM     v$sort_segment A,
             SELECT   B.name, C.block_size, SUM (C.bytes) / 1024 / 1024 mb_total
             FROM     v$tablespace B, v$tempfile C
             WHERE    B.ts#= C.ts#
             GROUP BY B.name, C.block_size
             ) D
    WHERE    A.tablespace_name = D.name
    GROUP by A.tablespace_name, D.mb_total;

  • Hard Disk free space dissapears and reappears

    Hi There,
Lately I've been noticing some very strange fluctuations in the reported "free space" on my HD. I let the disk get quite full (~1GB free or so) and then starting backing up and transferring data to my external HD. But when I started deleting these items the free space on the Hard Disk didn't increase. Then, one week later, it spontaneously goes from 2GB free to 13GB free (which I assume is the right ballpark).
Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

Your diagnostic priority, in order, is Disk Utility (Repair Permissions and Repair Disk), then Disk Warrior (a much more powerful version of the Repair Disk function in Disk Utility).
Mac Janitor is not really going to help much here. Many Mac users turn to Mac Janitor in a knee-jerk way, like the old "rebuilding the desktop" on OS 9, but if your problem is loss of gigabytes of disk space, there is simply no way the plain text logs maintained by MacJanitor can expand to gigabytes in size unless they are writing to the logs constantly without a break.
Part of your free space fluctuation may be explained by the automatic virtual memory swap file management does, as VM swap files come and go. The less RAM you have, especially under 1GB, the more likely you have VM swap files building up. When you have more than 10GB disk space free, the swap file movements aren't too noticeable. When you get down below 5GB free, swap files take up proportionally more of your free space and have a much higher chance of destabilizing the machine.

  • HT1338 My mac Mini shows full hard disk when it is not really full. Shows some free space upon start up that gradually disappears without doing anything with the Mac.

My Mac shows a full hard disk even though the disk is not full. There are several GB of unused space if I add the sizes of all the folders in the disk. Under the disk info window the free space shrinks to zero after a short period of time. It shows more space upon restart, but then it shrinks eventually to zero space available. is there a way to solve this?

OmniDisksweeper can help you find what's hogging your disk space.

  • Incorrect free space reported on FAT32 USB drive

I'm suspecting this is an issue deeper than Finder, but here we go:
I have an 80GB external drive that connects via USB and is formatted FAT32 (for compatibility with my Windows machine and PS3, so this can't change, unfortunately).
The other day, I noticed Finder reporting that only 15GB were available, which didn't seem right. After doing some checks, it is indeed wrong: I've only used 15GB. I've confirmed this with three different tools: Finder itself (using "get info"), the command 'du -csh' while in the drive's directory in /Volumes, and OmniDiskSweeper. All of them agree: only 15GB have been used, on an 80GB drive. Yet it still say it's 15GB free.
So I did a bit more checking. Figuring that I might not have partitioned it correctly, I had a look in fdisk, and the partition spans the whole drive. 'df -h' reports that the partition is 74GB in total, which sounds about right. But df also shows only 15GB remaining. Weird.
Wondering if I'd done an unsafe unmounting, I ran fsck on it, but that turned up nothing (I was hoping for orphaned inodes, but zilch). I know about the 4GB filesize limit on FAT32, and none of my files approach that (the largest being 3GB). I've done some searching online, and haven't found anything useful.
So, anyone heard of anything like this, or have any suggestions that I haven't tried, that aren't "use HFS+ or some other better fs"?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I tried as you suggested (only I made several 4GB files, due to the FAT32 filesize limit). Whenever I encountered the supposed maximum, if I made a file slightly larger than the remaining space (my a megabyte or so), the remaining space would increase by 3GB. After doing this a few times, I tried deleting them (about 25GB-worth), and the free space went back to 15.03GB, as it was before.
    Strange...
