4.3.2 Upgrade Killed International Roaming

I just upgraded my iPhone 4 to 4.3.2, and it will not connect to GSM networks outside the U.S. (my phone was working on AT&T, but I've been through Japan and Korea today and it won't roam anywhere).
I've played all the idiotic iPhone reset games (power, airplane mode on/off, reset network settings, etc), without any luck.  The phone just displays "No Service".
If I attempt to select a carrier, it will display the two local carriers after "Searching...", but as soon as you specifically select one instead of leaving the phone in "Automatic", it will display a message that the signal was lost and return to "No
Has anyone else hit this problem or found a solution?  I've seen a few message boards where people are downgrading to version 4.2 and getting roaming back, but I don't have a copy on my Mac and would have to try to backup/downgrade/restore while traveling which I'd prefer to do as a last resort...

My comment in the original post was slightly inaccurate in as much as I stated that my iPad had not been jail broken and this was the issue. I'd forgotten that I had jailbroke the iPad back in IOS 3.1.2 but did a restore the next day after realising that there was little in the jailbreak for me.
A few other posts here indicated that Tinyumberella had an option to go through Cydia when upgrading which i had to uncheck and away it went.
Hope this helps.

  • Iphone international roaming

I have the original iphone and have used it extensively internationally since Dec. 07. It has worked fine everywhere I have been: Europe, Middle East, North Africa. Until last week when I upgraded to 2.0 software. I was in the US when I upgraded and everything seemed fine. I arrived in Bahrain on July 22 and have been unable to connect to a carrier. In settings, it searches for and finds carriers. But when I try to select any of them, I get a message: "Your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in settings." But, of course, you cannot. You get the same message for which ever carrier you choose. If I leave it in automatic, it does not search for or connect to any carrier. I have since been to 2 other countries where I previously had no problems, but I get the same result. My iphone is useless. ATT does not have a clue. Is this problem related to the software upgrade? I have restored the original several times to no avail. Is there any way to go back to the old software?

ATT - if you use iPhone in the US - is an arrogant and ugly company. They did not let me activate the international roaming. Security issues, your phone is less than 3 months old - they say. They gave me all sorts of 800 numbers to go around it but none of their employees were authorized (or competent at all). I forgot the problem (which should not be even an issue) and went to Paris where I noticed that phone did not work. I called them from my latop via Skype but ran into a wall again because my phone is (still) less then 3 months old.
I just hate Apple not to teaming up with T-Mobile. ATT is a sleazy, arrogant operation. Well, I saved about $ 300 by not using the phone.

  • Q10 and international roaming

I am traveling to India and use active synch on my Q10 device.
Others in my company have traveled internationally and have issues receiving e-mail.
The device is configured for international roaming and use.
We verified with our carrier that there are no bandwidth or usage restrictions on the account.
I am using BB 10 OS and release 10.1.0.2030.
I am looking for a solution so I can pass this along to my other colleagues that want to upgrade their devices.
While travellng next week, I am willing to try different settings to have this work like other smart devices (IOS, Android)
Does anyone know of a pending OS upgrade to solve this?  I am willing to participate in beta testing while in India.

Our SIM cards are active internationally.  The intent is to not require the users to change their sim cards when they move from country to country.  They need to have the same phone number regardless of where they are travelling.
I am using the US ATT sim card in india.  It founnd a local carrier when turned on after our flight.
There is no specific carrier.  I've seen the carrier change from Vodaphone, to IDEA, Reliance, Tata depending where I travel in india.  This is not an issue when using older version of BB.
When walking through the airport in Mumbai yesterday (Saturday night Mumbai time), the device searched for a carrier and then services were lost.  I had to power down the device and removed the battery and sim card.  Both were put back in and the device started working properly after the restart.  So far, the phone is synching OK.  The real test will be tomorrow when I start receiving more e-mail.
There are no error messages that display on the phone.
Both the Network Subset and Service provider are unlocked.

  • IPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail

*iPhone 4 - 4.2 upgrade killed visual voicemail*
Ok, I upgraded to 4.2 and deleted all previous backups, so I know I'm screwed untill the next update.
I've synced, backed up, restored from backup and still no "Visual Voicemail".
My voicemail only works if I restore the phone to original settings. But if I do that, I loose important data in my apps. As soon as I "Restore From Backup" I loose my "Visual Voicemail".
If I reset my voicemail password with AT&T, I get the screen to set up a new password and greeting in Visual Voicemail. When I go through these steps I get the spinning wheel "Saving".
It never saves, and I get an alert that says it can't connect to voicemail.
I can set up voicemail by dialing "1", but then all I see is a blank screen in my "Visual Voicemail".
I've also tried a full reset of my voicemail with AT&T.
I even got a new SIM card. That didn't work.
Can anybody figure this one out???
    -Thanks

Well, thats the first time I've been told that after a week of phone calls. Maybe it's possible.
I forgot to backup my phone before I upgraded to 4.2. Oops!
When I noticed my Visual Voicemail was gone I tried to backup but ran out of memory.
So I deleted previous backups to make more room. It backed up fine after that.
I don't think it ran out of memory during the update, but maybe it did.
    Crap!

  • Should I upgrade the internal hdd on my 2008 8.1 iMac or use an external drive?

I have an external hdd right now it is a 500gb go seagate goflex with a number of iTunes folders that I put on from my windows pc. I just received this 2008 2.4ghz core 2 duo 8.1 iMac and tried to import the files. The internal hdd is only 250gb so they would not fit, when I tried to get iTunes to run from the external drive it would but I would have to manually open each artist then album then song I wanted in the Finder for it to play. The songs do not show up automatically in iTunes, even though I think I followed all of the instructions for external hdd support. I was going to buy a new iMac and have the genius set it up, but now I think I am going to upgrade the RAM myself and am deciding wether or not I should also replace the internal hdd to 2TB or just get an external hdd so when I get a new iMac, maybe next year, I could still use it. However, I don't want to get another, larger external hdd if I'm going to have a hard time transferring all of my media to iTunes. Can I pay to have an apple genius do this at the store? I just upgraded the operating system to Snow Leopard and am waiting to upgrade RAM before moving to Mountain Lion. I just want my iTunes to sync up, at this point I will do just about anything, short of buying a new Mac. Thanks for any help.

You can keep your iTunes collection on an external drive.  You can also keep just bulky items that you may not want to see often such as movies and just keep smaller items on the internal drive.  This split option is more tricky but there are several ways to do it.
If all you have is a modest music collection, you can manage with an internal drive.  Most modern media collections with huge movies files fast outpace even larger internal hard drives and you will have to resort to an external drive.  Your computer dating from 2008 is (according to Apple's coproration standards) on its way to becoming a museum piece (hey, I still use a 10 year old computer, but Apple gave up hope for me years ago).  I would not upgrade the internal drive.   That will cost you a lot  and be tricky to take with you to your next computer. An external drive you can just plug into a new computer.
Some of the issues you are encountering are because you do not yet know how to properly manage and transfer iTunes files.  We can help you, or you can pay somebody a lot of money to do this for you on a regular basis.
Your GoFlex drive was used with Windows. Macs and Windows use different drive formats.  If you are now using Mac-only then you will need to reformat the drive (you will need to store all those files elsewhere while you are doing this).
Do not buy just one external drive.  When that drive fails (oh, and believe me, it will) your whole collection will be lost.  Some of it you may be able to download again from Apple, but Apple does not "store" your iTunes collection, it is up to you to ensure its safety.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the internal Hard disk drive on the iMac

Is it possible to upgrade the internal Hard disk drive on the iMac?

Yes but it's definitely not advised. If you have a machine newer than 2009 Apple uses drives that have integrated heat sensors. This makes upgrading much more difficult but not impossible. If you have a machine still under warranty then definitely DO NOT do this yourself as you may void the warranty not to mention it isn't for the faint of heart. Take the machine to an AASP to have the work done, you will need to find one in your area willing to do so.
If you are considering a new machine then simply buy the configuation you need.

I would like to make one static copy of Firefox, so I can restore it if I have a hard drive crash, or if I want to upgrade my internal disk, or if I want to have a duplicate on another replacement computer.

    Hi tchmielewski,
You should look into [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync Firefox Sync]. I think it will do everything that you are asking for. This will allow you to have all of your Firefox preferences and settings shared across multiple computers.
You could also create a backup on a USB drive in case of catastrophic failture. I would suggest that you back up your personal information and bookmarks using the article [[Backing up your information]].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

    Hello,
Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Yes. Leopard can damage hardware. See my long-winded post here.
It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.
    option-apple-O-F
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

  • Using Whatsapp  to call incurred international roaming charges

Please permit me to introduce myself
    Account Number: [removed]
    Executive summary:
I used an Iphone App called Whatsapp that allows users to exchange online messages and even calling. I used that app to make an app to app call to a friend in India.
And I was shocked to see that Verizon has billed all the talk time to international roaming and the bill is a HUGE amount close to $775
    Issue in detail
    Total minutes talked - 296
Billed - $775+ (at international roaming rate $2.30/minute)
    Please consider the following facts
-I used Whatsapp to talk to Iphone app to app call
-I had called same Whatsapp number in india
-A few times all happened with in a month/same billing cycle
-First time it happened in my history with Verizon
-I don't have  international plan so I did not know my cell phone can make international calls through Verizon (Have never made one via cell phone/verizon)
-I have no way of knowing that this is being charged to my account until I see the bill (I saw and reported this within a week of the ebill date)
-The app clearly says this //Using WhatsApp while your phone is connected to Wi-Fi should not incur charges from your carrier. Please note that some Wi-Fi networks may have charges or usage fees.//
    http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/iphone/20970433
Please consider the following as a LOYAL verizon customer
    - 15 year LOYAL verizon mobile customer (customer since 2000 since I landed in the US)
    - Never left Verizon , not even once
    - Always paid my bill on time (automatic payments)
    - Have converted MANY customers from other carriers to Verizon
In this background I would humbly request you to put yourself in my shoes and see this issue as a mistake/software glitch which I had no way of knowing until I see the bill.
I request you to do the needful to see it as what it is , a mistake , that was not done by me but a software of which I have no knowledge of.
Being a long standing LOYAL Verizon customer , I beseech you to do the right thing and reverse all the charges related this incident.
Following is the log of my efforts to work with Verizon customer support
Dates called April 5th 1 hr
    April 6 - 4 hrs
    Ian did the right thing
He converted the calls to regular international long distance from 2.39/min to 29 cents a minute , convenience plan.
I agreed and he said its waiting on supervisor's approval which is 24 hrs.
I called again April 7 I was told it might take 48 to 42 hrs
I called again on April 10 and I was told the supervisor did not approve.
I spoke to many and finally reached Ms.Brooke  who introduced herself as the top most supervisor in the building (Employee [removed],Kentucky call center)
Personal information removed as required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service

    Hi JJKAY,
The EXACT same thing took place for my wife. She used the WhatsApp to make calls and it ended up going to a number in Turkey. Verizon sent NO Alerts at all that this would be International charge OUTSIDE of our International calling plan.
My wife made calls using the SAME app to Mexico and it went through without charges.
We have also been customer for numerous years.
I called Verizon to see how this occurred and got the technical folks, who first told me as they told you, they could change to the Global plan and then pay a reduced $/min. However, then the supervisor stepped in and would not approve.
Verizon seems to think they have no responsibility to send ALERTS or allow for ALERTS when it goes well beyond the ordinary.
Did you get Verizon to provide a credit as a customer?
I would like to know, as I am about to switch and then make this a case of Verizon and show how much they care about customer retention. Thanks in advance.

  • Will Time Machine (TM) reset my backups if I upgrade my internal HD ???

    Hi everyone,
I am upgrading my internal HD (160GB HD) on my MBP to a larger one (WD 320GB HD). However, I will be upgrading it while having my system cloned; for this reason, I would like to know, if and when I connect my computer to the TM HD, I will be risking to lose any of my previous backups? Or, will TM recognize my system because I had it upgraded from a clone? Does it make any difference if I backup my information and instal the system from the beginning (Mac OS X DVDs), I mean to TM previous backups?
Any help will be truly appreciated.

I had a problem on the other side, the USB backup drive. TM re-started my backup from scratch after I moved the drive! Here's what happened:
Started with Time Machine backing up to USB hard drive connected directly to MacBook Pro. Had about three months of backups.
Moved USB hard drive to Airport Extreme as a network drive. Mounted drive to MacBook Pro. Since it still had the same name, Time Machine recognized it and started backing up to the drive in its new location (on AEBS).
In this scenario, I would have hoped that my backup would simply continue, but it started over on the day when I moved it to the AEBS!
BEING ABLE TO MOVE FROM USB TO WIRELESS WOULD BE SO GREAT:
For long backups I could connect it directly to my MacBook Pro. Or even take the drive with me while traveling (for backups/restore while away), then return to wireless backups when I get home.
Has anyone had a different experience?

  • Skype call to international roaming mobile

I am using Skype credit to call 61 Australian mobile phone currently in London. Does this incur an international roaming fee for the mobile, or is the cost completely with the Skype credit? The mobile is with Telstra.

    Hello,
If you use a cellphone to make calls which originate outside the country in which the cellphone is registered your carrier will likely charge roaming fees (in some cases these can be substantial). Check with your carrier.
TIME ZONE - US EASTERN. LOCATION - PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA.
I recommend that you always run the latest Skype version: Windows & Mac
If my advice helped to fix your issue please mark it as a solution to help others.
Please note that I generally don't respond to unsolicited Private Messages. Thank you.

  • Using Facetime internationally without international roaming fee?

I'd like to use Facetime internationally between two U.S. (AT&T) registered iPhones, but don't want to pay international roaming fees to make the initial contact call. Possible? Is there some way to establish a Facetime connection using Wi-Fi only?

    Hi...
It's all done via IP (TCP and UDP) layer.
I think it's done this way when you try to make a FaceTime call to one of your contacts:
    1) Tap the FaceTime button in contact and select the phone number of the other end
    2) It registers itself to Apple services with your phone number and IP associated (WiFi one)
    3) Query Apple service for IP address associated with phone number selected in step 1)
    4) If found, tries to make the FaceTime call between these two endpoints
Very roughly explained.. I didn't trace the whole process into much detail.
So answer for you is, you should not pay a cent(penny or whatewer) for FaceTime call.
    Hope I'm not wrong

  • International roaming

Which telco did you prefer to use to make or recieve call while abroad using your Blackberry?
Digi/Celcom/Maxis or any other mobile operator?
Can you guys share the cheapest rate and roaming experience? TQ!
Is data roam or communication is important for you? or is it both?

    Ridgebacks --
My SO and I have been AT&T/Cingular wireless customers for years. We travel out of country; destinations are generally Mexico, Canada and frequently China. We have experience with AT&T international roaming and Edge data international roaming plans. (We have an AT&T wireless card with data plan for our laptops for emergencies.)
SO has a Blackberry, which he relied on completely during a recent trip in China, when he spilled a Coke on his laptop inflight. The BB bundled data plan is more expensive than the iPhone plan, but it incorporates receipt of messages almost anywhere in the world. However, SO seldom uses his BB as a phone in China/Hong Kong, because AT&T roaming charges (phone) are high. He has a dedicated cell phone with a Hong Kong #.
As well, the wireless card is used out of country only in emergencies. Edge roaming rates do apply and are incredibly high, even in Mexico.
I doubt that AT&T will deviate very much from their historic billing policies for the iPhone. I have seen on some message boards that AT&T is offering an international data plan for use with the iPhone, but that one must purchase it for at least a year. There is no "purchase as needed monthly" option. I don't know what the rate is for that plan.
My suggestion, if you don't want to use airplane mode, is to turn your email accounts "off" under settings. That way, phone is functional, but the network won't download email. That's what I'll probably do next time I'm ooc.

Setting up and using International Roaming

I have paid for international travel pack but it is not working. My phone will only go into SOS mode. It is a telstra problem. Not phone problem. The apple shop has narrowed it down to this as.
