4:3 being cropped in Projects

Hello,
I have a full frame ( 4:3 ) video on my hard drive, when I import it into iMovie it is being stretched into 16:9, but when I add it to a project iMovie '09 it is being cropped.
How do I get it into its correct aspect ratio?
Cheers

I've struggled in general with aspect ratios, and I'm no expert - but seeing no other proposals here I'll venture out...
First - I'll presume the iMovie Project is set as 4x3 (sorry - have to ask).
I've an indirect thing you might try. I've found that various tools I use output video files with aspect ratios that iMovie of FCE treat as 16x9, even though the input and intent is 4x3. Recently, I was using JES Deinterlacer to deinterlace content, and found that its output was reliably treated as 4x3 by iMovie '09. In that case, I was using the "Export to Quicktime" setting, and choosing size as "NTSC 720x480 4:3.
Perhaps this tool properly "sets" the aspect ratio with the file and would meet your needs. JES does allow you to set the Project tab to "Bare" - meaning no processing, so perhaps there is a very low-intrusion way to use to tool to pass through your video and hopefully end up with video that is treated as 4x3.

  • HDV video being cropped in timeline

I captured video in HDV, cut it into clips and when I drag them into the timeline they appear to be cropped on playback.  It looks as if the 1440x1080 HDV frames are being cropped into 720x480 frames when they go into the timeline rather than being converted down to the smaller size.  How do I keep the full frames in the edited movie. I've searched around for problems in settings but haven't been able to find out much.  I'm a fairly experienced PC user but pretty much of a newby to Premiere.  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums.
It sounds like you have created a standard-definition sequence.
Create a new sequence and choose a high-definition preset. Now when you put your clips on the timeline they will be correct.
One other possibility is that you have your Program Monitor magnification set to something other than "Fit". Have a look at the drop-down list just below the Program Monitor.

  • Images being cropped with camera motion

not sure how to explain this, but as i progress in a video clip, the images become gradually cropped as the camera is moving. Best way to explain it is by showing a clip:
    http://spencerwsmith.com/video/tree%20sweep02%20090219b-sm.mov
The camera is moving as the tree branches grow. Notice how the branch starts getting cropped on the right and left, then eventually disappears.

    hi,
hard to say what's going on without seeing how the project is built, but it looks like the the layers are getting clipped in z space. It happens in my projects, that layers can get clipped in 3D space, when adding a filter or adding new elements to a layer. I find that often flattening a layer into 2D space will fix it. Note that you can still get 3Dness out of it by dropping a flattened 2d layer into a new layer and enabling 3D for that.

  • Printing is not WYSIWYG; photo is being cropped

When my wife prints from iPhoto with the desired target of a 4X6 print, she finds that iPhoto is cropping the photo around the entire perimeter. She showed me: (1) the photo in iPhoto; (2) the preview of the print (which crops it some); (3) and then the final print (which crops it even more).
She is printing borderless. So the resolution of the print is actually larger than would be if no cropping were taking place.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this or where I can get help? (I've considered purchasing Aperture, but it seems to be an expensive printing solution. I'm not sure whether it would fix the issue.)
    Thank you.
    --Griff

<your Kodak cameras most likely takes photos in a 4x3 ratio and to print that photo in a 4x6 ratio something is going to cropped - it is not Mac vs PC, iPhoto vs some other program ->
    HI LN,
    Thanks for your reply.
(Please understand as I explain further I am not making this a battle of which is better: pc or Mac. I love my new MacBook and happy to be learning the Apply way!!)
I trust you are right about the ratio--it is not something of which I am knowledgeable. What I do know is that with my Sony, Kodak and Canon digital cameras, I take pics at either the highest or 2nd highest resolution, download to my pc computer and then use either Picasa, the Windows print function or Adobe Elements. All 3 of these allow me simply to print my picture as a 4x6 without losing the tops of the picture (which matters mostly on close ups). As I mentioned earlier even on the pc, if I chose the borderless option I do lose some of the tops of the picture. With iPhoto though when I try to print a 4x6 I lose quite a bit more of the top of the picture. I lose the same amount whether I chose borderless or with a border on my Mac.
With Mac being known for being more user friendly than pc's, it seems odd to me that I am having difficulty with this common printing task.

  • Avi being cropped on FCP6 timeline

    Hi,
I'm using FCP 6. I've imported an avi into the project and dragged it onto the timeline. It is cropping the bottom of the picture off. Does anyone know what the problem is? the sequence is set to DV-PAL anamorphic. The aspect ratio of the footage, I was told, is the same as the timeline.
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it- the client wants this project imminently.
    Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your input Brian.
The frames size turns out to be 720x405.
My boss says that the client doesn't want it this afternoon after all so it's not quite as urgent. She's put me onto a different project so I can't do the conversion to quicktime yet. If the avi is cropped on the timeline, will it still be cropped if I convert it to quicktime, or will it adjust it?
    Cheers.

  • Imported AVI Being Cropped/Resized.  Why?

I'm importing an AVI into Premiere Pro 7.0.
When I play it in the project window, it looks fine.
When I move it to the timeline and play it in the sequence/monitor, it get's cropped or resized.
It doesn't matter if I have it zoomed to fit, 50%, 100%, or anything else.
I can't seem to find anything in the preferences (or anywhere) that will allow me to stop
    it from doing this automatically.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Take a look at this ARTICLE, as it will get you started on the right path with file formats, and also offer tips on getting all of the useful data from the files that you Import. Based on the above discussion, this will prove very useful to you, when establishing the settings for your Project.
You want your Project settings to match your Assets. You can alter things when you Export.

  • Video edges being cropped unintentionally

When adding an imovie event to a new project, the video frame size is being changed. I don't think it's the aspect ratio. All the edges are being cut off in the project view even though the event view is correct... not good for a school choir video! I don't want to exclude any of the students.

You probably are using image stabilization, which works by zooming in. You can turn it off by selecting a clip, opening the clip inspector, and unchecking stabilization. You could also move the stabilization slider to a lower level of zoom and still get some benefit from the stabilization.

  • Dual-Screen (LCD TV) Is Being Cropped

Well, I've got my iMac plugged into a 32" LCD TV (I figured this would go in the forum for Mac OS X 10.5 instead of iMac, since it seems to be a software issue), and I've got the resolution set to 1920x1080 (although changing it to anything else doesn't fix the issue, anyway), and the screen gets slightly cropped.
Let me explain a bit more... Say I'm watching a video. On my main iMac screen, fullscreen, the character in-frame may have his whole head in the frame. Once I bring it over to my TV, it cuts off part of the top and bottom... It just crops it right off.
I've tried very hard to fix this... If anybody could help me out, I would be incredibly appreciative.
    Thanks!
(Side note: I've checked... On the TV, I can't find anything that lets me resize the picture.)

I already tried turning off Overscan, but it just made the screen surrounded by a black box.
But, I've actually just now noticed on my remote a "Screen Mode" button (haven't looked at the remote in ages -- I've just been looking through the preferences in the TV), which I can set to "Zoom" to compensate for most of it, but it zooms a bit too much and it gets cropped again.
Now, it's not quite as bad as it was, so that is helpful, but there still is a bit of a crop.
It's fine with most things... It's hardly ever noticeable. But, when I use things like Boxy, it's pretty evident (because of controls on the sides of the screen and graphics on the top).
If this is the best I can get, it's still better than where I started, and for that I thank you, but I would like to know if I could eliminate it altogether (maybe like, an option in OS X that lets me manually resize that screen or something).
    Thanks

  • Video in 16:9 Motion menu preview being cropped

I can't find any discussion on this but am maybe asking the wrong question.
How do I get the 16:9 preview buttons on a 16:9 motion menu to play without cropping the top and bottom of the source clip? I don't understand why a 16:9 clip doesn't fill a 16:9 preview window- and can't find any setting which fixes this.
    4:3 preview windows play fine.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks, Steve

I'm not sure that you're describing what's happening well. Can you describe what you're doing in a little more detail? Or could it be you're actually doing letterboxing, not 16:9?

  • 1280x720 video being cropped down to 1248x702 for no reason

I've been using Compressor to batch export a large number of long lecture videos. My settings are:
    Format: QT
    Width: 1280
    Height: 720
    Pixel aspect ratio: Square
    Crop: None
    Padding: None
    Frame rate: 29.97
    Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On

    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 90
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
    Fast Start: on
The first 15 times or so, it worked wonderfully, but the past 3 or 4 times I've tried it, the right and bottom sides of the video are cropped down to 1248x702. I tried trashing all the compressor preference files per
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888
Reinstalling Compressor requires getting my office's IT department involved, which I'm not going to do. When I export a single video straight out of Final Cut Pro with the same settings, it works fine. I'm running all the latest versions of everything.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Final Cut can't handle the large batch exports I need to do, so I need to get Compressor working again.

    It's probably this:

  • Why is this drop shadow being cropped? IDCS4ME WinXPSP3

    Hi,
I cannot figure out why this drop shadow is getting cropped.
Attached is a CS4 file with an embedded graphic. A drop shadow is applied. When this file is exported to PDF ("press quality"), the drop shadow is getting cropped, as you will see on the PDF attached. Why oh why?
    All help welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Ariel

Thank  you all. It is weird. I'm still not sure if it's a corrupt Photoshop file or an InDesign bug, or a user error?
Anyway, adding spread did help, but at the cost of slightly changing the quality of the shadow. I couldn't get a vector mask to help (I just added a "show all" mask). But cropping the top-right corner as Peter Spier suggested works and is the least invasive treatment.
I've got 3 more similar characters on the original page, all created by the same person with the same workflow, and none of them display this problem.
    Thanks again,
    Ariel

  • Yes or No: Can I print 4x6 photos without them being cropped by HP?

Many posts complaining of the same -
HP all-in-ones are cropping 2-3mm on all edges in order to fit 4x6 photo paper.
    Simple question:
Yes or No.  Is there a solution or setting to fix this?
I'm not looking for workaround such as printing my photos on 8.5x11 and then trimming them myself.
    That's just lame.
HP!  Are there any plans to fix this design flaw?
    Thank you.

    Yes.

  • Creating card, how to stop photos being cropped

I am trying to create a simple card wioth one photo. I want the whole photo but every them crops it. I have changed the proportions of the image to suit the proportions of the card. Anyone know a way around this?

I'm not really sure about what you're doing; it is something I've not done before and I don't use iPhoto. But my assumption is that the place for inserting the image is a mask. If so, click on the image you inserted and a slider should appear. Adjust the slider so the image fits completely.
I hope that helps. I'm answering blindly.

  • Some of my photos have a disconnected link after being cropped on iPhoto

I am an editor of a art/lit magazine. We take pictures of the art work, upload them to iPhoto, crop/edit them, and then move them into Indesign. Most of the pictures work when we do that, but for five of them, it doesn't. We upload those, crop them, and then when we go back to the picture, it just turns black when we try to do anything with it. We've tried to retake the pictures, but each time the same thing keeps happening after we edit it. I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this, or if we are doing something wrong. It only does it for certain pictures of the same artwork, so we have no idea what is wrong.
    *PLEASE HELP:)*

    Reply to Terence Devlin:
There really is not anything different with the pictures. We will take a picture of the same piece of art mulitple times, and all the pictures of the same piece of art work don't work.
It only messes up after we crop it.
We tried the backup and rebuild, but it didn't work.
    Thank you though!
