4:3 event in a 16:9 project

On a recent trip, I recorded using a digital video camera (4:3) and my iphone 4 (widescreen).
I imported the videos from both, and created a 16:9 project. In the events pane, the 4:3 videos have black lines on the left and right, but when I drag them to the 16:9 project, they zoom in to fill the screen in the project.
I would like to keep the black lines on the left and right, but I haven't found a way to do that. Is there a way? If so, how?

Open the Clip Inspector to the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tab and select FIT.

  • How do you scan events to import to a project?

The biggest issue for me now is that the role of projects and events is conflated.
iMovie '11 allowed you to create projects that were independent of any event. Then you could easily scan the events via thumbnails to find the appropriate clips to drag into your project.
Now, there is no distinction. You have to choose an event when you open a project, or import a file into the project. Basically, there are no more project files. Instead, what you have is an event editor.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to make iMovie 10 (sic) as functional as the previous version?
The first clue for me should have been when the sequel to iMovie '11 was called iMovie 10. It really seems like a step backwards.

  • How to move Event (not necessarily connected to Projects ) and projects to new external drive

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and iMovie11 9.0.4 have a had very stressful time trying to clear down the Movies folder from my internal drive and get it across to a new external hard drive, as my 700gb drive on my 2009 iMac is practically full. I have taken a full back-up and also created a new 1.5 TB partition on the external drive. However I do not know how to get the Events and Projects across, and for iMovie to know that every thing is now on the new drive.
Initially I copied the 2 folders using finder, which seemingly worked but then I discovered that iMovie did not display the the new events, so I deleted the 2 folders from the external drive and tried manually moving the events in iMovie. This was very slow, with lots of spinning wheels and eventually iMovie crashed. So I moved the new Event copies I did manage to create into trash, but still iMovie was crashing.
I then, thinking something had become corrupted, I  tried to restore the Events folder and Projects folder from my backup, but that did not work as I got a message saying the there was not enough space to do the copies (why does it need extra space as I assume it would be overwriting the existing folders ?). So in desperation I did some forum searching and ended up deleting the com.apple.iApps.plist. Now iMovie seems to be working fine, and is displaying al the events from my internal drive (I have ejected all other drives), and I am back to square one (hopefully), however for some reason the 'month' folders I had previously created in each Event 'Year' have disappeared and all the, for example 2013 events, are now under the 2013 folder with no Month sub folders( I assume this is something to do with the preferences I had deleted ?)
I am hoping someone can direct me on the right path for getting the Events (not all of which are used in Projects) and Projects across to the new external drive, so I can free up space on the internal drive (and install Mountain Lion - my end goal).
I have been  trying to do all this since 0600 this morning, so if anyome can help it would be very much appreciated.
Jim (now grabbing a much needed beer !)

Do the external drive show up in iMovie 11?? I just drag and drop in iMovie and don't touch it or change in finder.

  • Movie Clips in Event Library not Recognized By Project Library

I downloaded Photos but when working on a project in iMovie 9 my iPhoto videos were not found.  However if I revert to using iPhoto I regain my ability to move selected photos into my iMovie project so for now I will simply not use Photos.  However I still have a problem.  The movie clips in the projects in my Project Library don't find the clips in the Event Library in the iPhoto Videos folder.  I see either:  "This clip's media file is not currently available" or "Source clip is missing."  Is there some way to refresh iMovie?  Fortunately the projects shared to iTunes are still intact.

Many who post here use Preference Manager from DIgital Rebellion to trash preferences. It's reliable and the price is right – free.
I assume you've tried different events on different drives and the no-playback problem persists.
And just out of curiosity, can you play clips in a project timeline or if you open the clip in its own time line? And does the skimmer skim?

  • No sound in imovie events but there is in projects

I recently imported a lot of video to an external hard drive.  When I try and play the video in events, there is no sound.  When I drag it up to a project, there is sound.  What's up with that?!

Is the external drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Formats such as FAT32 and NTFS will not work properly (if at all) with iMovie. Also, external FireWire drives generally work more efficiently than USB drives when editing in iMovie.
If the drive is not formatted correctly, you will have to backup the files elsewhere, then reformat using Disk Utility.
To check the format, in Finder right-click (or control-click) on the name of the drive (left hand column) and select Get Info. In the panel that opens you will see the format.
Of course, formatting may not be the problem, given that you can at least see the video in the Event, plus get sound and video in the Project (which may be on your internal drive). But worth checking!

  • Why wont the images of my events show up in my project???

Every time i start up final cut pro x my current project is completely fine. After i start working on it and moving events around in the project all of the images in the events that i have put in my project don't show up, load or re appear at all. No idea why this is happening, i even tried freeing up hardware space and deleted alot of events in my event library, by the way i just bought final cut pro x and this happened within 2 days of using it, please someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried trashing the preferences?
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Serious problem: Imovie is working from the event but not from the project

    Hi,
Related to my other post, I have discovered that Imovie seems to be working fine in the event library, but not in the project library.
If I use the spacebar or play buttons in the event part, it shows the film in the right top screen or even in full screen mode.
But if I click on my project, nothing works anymore.

    Hi
Try to make a new User/account. Log into this. Have a re-try.
How does it work now ?
If OK. Go back to Your first account, Take move out iMovie pref file to the desktop
    Re.start iMovie.
    Works OK ?
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.

  • FCP X Events but no FCP X Projects

Can i create my own FCP X Projects file?  I'm new to FCP X and the training I'm on said i should have a project and events folder in but I've only seen the FCP X Events file.  I'm afraid that these folders may not be able to communicate properly?

What version are you using? Your training sounds out of date for recent versions.

  • How Can I Hide unneeded Event Files and Projects?

    Hi,
Each time I open FCP X I see the last project I was working on, as well as thumbnails from all of my events. Sometimes I see missmatched project files in the windows.
There are projects/Events that I do not want to have visible or accessible at all times.
Is there a way to Open One Event and only see the project clips from that event without the possibility of getting into other projects unless I specifically ask for them?
I like to keep my projects separate and am having a very difficult time staying focused when clips from other Events keep opening up.
In FCP 7 it was easy to close a prject and not have to have its clip files migrate into other work when unwanted.
    thanks in advance.
    christos

Just to add a comment to Tom Wolsky's Event Manager recommendation: one advantage EMX offers over manual reorganization is that it provides you with a way to step outside of FCP and see an overview of all the folders that are related to FCP. That includes mounted and unmounted HDDs, Projects and Events that are "not in use" (hidden) and those that are displayed within FCP. To someone who is organizationally-challenged (me) that alone was worth the price.

  • Is it possible to have more than one event/project in Imovie at the same time?

Let me see if I can shorten this. I am working on a project for a review. It's going to take quite awhile and I'm half way through it. However, I need to work on another project, one thats short and I can dish out fairly quickly. My problem is that I cannot start it without discarding my current project. Which I cannot do because I will lose a weeks worth of data. And I cannot save it because it will combine all the clips and I would have to re-split them (half a days progress).
So in short, is there a way to save my project as-is? Or possible create a new event and start a new project while maintaining my current work? Thank you for your help!

Version 10.0.3 is the latest version of iMovie. iMove '11 (as in 2011) is version 9.
iMovie saves your Projects automatically. So you can just choose to create a new Project. Your existing Projects will remain available for you to go back to whenever you like.
You can have as many Projects as you like. You don't need ot finish one before you begin another.
Post back if you have specific questions.

  • How do you move events and projects between Libraries in iMove 10

    I am running OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks) & iMovie 10.0.5.
I am trying to free up space on my internal 1TB hard drive and want to archive events and completed projects onto an external hard drive, which has a second iMove v10 Library on.  Under V9 of iMovie this function was easy, but I am struggling under V10.
What is the correct way to move events between libraries in iMovie.
When I attach the external drive containing my second iMovie Library, open it I can see all existing events stored (by move) under version 9 of iMovie.
Reading the Help (extract below) for this function it implies highlight the Event to move & then drag & drop into the second Library.
Shift+CMD with drag and drop onto the second library at the library name level will move Events that are not tied to a project, but for completed projects (Finalized under V9 or shared for example with iTunes in V10) it seems these can not be moved, the above function only copies them to the second library.
I have tried all different combinations of the Fn, Ctrl, Option CMD keys etc with and without SHIFT and the ones that work for this function only copy the event. I can not seem to get an event moved once attached to a project. File - Move Event will also move Events not tied to a completed project.
I have also tried copy to a second Library & then to delete the original events.  Again it appears you can not delete events tied to a Project.
What I have also not been able to find is how to move a finalised Project to another Library and then see if events attached to that project would then move.
I have been able to move Events not tied to a Project to the second Library, then create a new project within this Library.  This helps with all new projects & future import of Events. But does not help me free up current space by archiving.
    Extract from help
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library. The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip:  To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
             Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
Would appreciate any help on this matter.
    Thanks
    Colroy

Further to my original post below; I have done further analysis and it seams that if you have events tied to a project (mine are all finalised) you can not move events between Libraries.  However, events that are not tied to a project can be moved. Either by Shift CMD or by using File- Move event.
What I have not been able to find is how to move a finalised Project to another Library and then see if events attached to that project would then move.
Copy works for events attached to a project. I have also tried copy to a second Library & then to delete the original events.  Again it appears you can not delete events tied to a Project.
Does anyone know how to archive (move) Projects and/or events in iMovie 10.0.05 under Mavericks 10.9.5 to a second library on an external drive.
    Thanks

  • Possible to locate Event & Project Libraries on Network Shared Drives?

My iMovie is running on a Mac Mini.. but I have all my media (iTunes, iPhoto, wish to have iMovie too) stored on large drives attached to a G5 via eSATA and shared on the network over Gigabit Ethernet.
The drives on the G5 show up on iMovie Event Library but not on Project Library.. cannot drag any events into the shared drives from within iMovie (have little yellow triangle with exclamations on them)
The internal drive and any USB drives directly attached to the Mac Mini do allow dragging to though.
is this the limitation.. are the only drives the eligible to locate Event and Project Libraries internal and drives directly attached to the computer running iMovies? That would be a shame.. the eSATA drive shared over GigE have a much higher transfer rate than any USB 2.0 drives that are attached to my Mac Mini..
    any help will be appreciated..

    Got my answer..
NOTE: To use an external hard disk with iMovie, it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). *iMovie doesn’t support network-attached storage* or external flash memory drives.

  • Value of mounting FCPX events/projects on external drive

    Friends,
I'm wondering how much value I would get if I mount FCPX events and projects on an external drive?  I have an imac i7 with a 2TB HD.  The drive is less than half full.  I've noticed that FCPX slows down while rendering, and it renders often when adding titles and music.  I have a 1 TB FW800 external that I could use.  Would I notice any speed benefit?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Most everyone here probably uses an external Firewire or several to keep their projects and events on.  Of course, you can copy the Final Cut Projects folder and Final Cut Events folders from your system drive's Movies folder to the root (top) level of your external drive. You should make a backup first.  Then you should remove the projects and events from within the same Projects and Events folders that you just copied from on your system drive.  You need to only have one set of the same projects and events on your system so FCP X does not get confused.  It is possible to "hide" your originals away in another folder other than the Movies folder or at the top level of your system drive, but that's another topic.  Another point is that, generally, FCP X cannot work with an external drive that is also used as a Time Machine destination drive.  Finally, the external needs to be formatted in Mac OS Extended Journalled to work with FCP X.  A recent update to FCP X may have fixed the Time Machine restriction.  There are a lot of threads on this forum that talk about these things.  You can also watch this short tutorial about how to copy your projects and events to an external drive from within FCP X ...

  • Is there a way make Final Cut Pro X NOT open every event/project I have worked on at open?

I will admit, I am quite new to Final Cut Pro X, but have been a FCP user for years - this version is like learning to walk all over again.
Everytime I open FCP X, it loads every event/project I have ever worked on, and it takes a looooong time.  Is there a way to have it open blank and then let me open only the Events I wish to work with?

Event Manager is only $4.99 but if you don't mind doing it manually, it will cost you nothing.
This Apple help article tells you how to hide the Projects and Events you don't want opening in FCP X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4740
As usual it makes it sound quite complex but all it involves is making 2 folders which you name Final Cut Events - Hidden  and Final Cut Projects - Hidden and dragging the project and event folders you don't want into them. (The exact name of the folders is not critical so you can choose your own if you wish).
When you want to see them again you drag them back into the original folders.
You should move the folders with FCP X shutdown.

  • "Final Cut Events/Projects" folders missing

So I upgraded to Mavericks over the weekend and things were going great for a while. I wasn't experiencing any of the known issues that other people were experiencing after the upgrade.
But then I clicked the Movies tab in finder and realized that my "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" are missing! The backups folder is still intact, as well as my libraries, but those folder are missing. I've searched thoroughly around my MacBook and cannot locate them.
So I guess I'm wondering: is there away to recreate these folders? I can still access events and projects from within Final Cut Pro but the only way to get to the events or projects is by right-clicking on a library in the Movies tab and selecting the "Show Package Contents" option.
This is my first post on the forum because I am literally puzzled and have spent many hours searching for a solution to no avail. Any and all help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mark, thanks for lending a helping hand. Truthfully, I don't rememeber that option when I upgraded. There was nothing too important in the folders, as I store the larger projects on my Time Capsule and try to delete old events as I complete the projects. However, when I now import footage, the events are only created in the designated FC library. Those folders don't exist on my computer anymore and they are not in the trash. Is there a way to recreate the folders or did I completely ruin FC? Thanks again for your help, it means a lot.
