4:3 title safe zone overlay for 16:9 anamorphic DV PAL timeline?

Hey guys,
I'm working on a widescreen TVC, and I need to be sure that the titles are safe for 4:3. Is there a way to bring up 4:3 safe zones on a 16:9 DV PAL Anamorphic timeline? Or will I need to design an overlay in Photoshop?
Pete

Do you have FCP 7? Those are built in. Although they are notches, not full lines. If not...well, even if so, you can use these. They are GREAT! I use them. Andy's Guides:

  • Change the Colour of the title safe zones

Is there a way to change the yellow tittle safe zone colour, to something that can be seen over all colours.  yellow cant be seen over white and it makes it very difficult to use, FCP 7 used aqua Blue it worked much better.   PLease help, Or Apple PLEASE CHANGE the Colour or make it able to change for the user prefs.....

  • Basic Title safe and action safe zones questions

1.) Why is it that a title needs to be within the inner square, otherwise it may not display on a TV, though action can still take place in the outer square outside the title safe zone and it is still fine?
2.) Do these zones apply to CRT televisions, LCD, Plasmas, and video intended for being displayed through a projector the same way?
    Thanks.

    1. Safe area and safe title were developed many years ago, back when folks had TV sets with rounded corners. There was a real risk that a title would not be displayed in full if it went outside the boundary.
Pictures are interpretated differently to text. If say, someones left shoulder and arm are out of picture, it is obvious what is missing. An incomplete title can easily be misunderstood or not understood at all.
    2. Unless you have absolute control over the device which will be displaying your movie, apply the rules to everything.

  • 4:3 safe zone in 16:9

Is there a way to put a 4:3 safe zone overlay on a 16:9 frame. The idea being to ensure that the substance of a shot or graphic, CG, is viewable on a 4:3 tv when 16:9 edit is edgecropped.

Arsenal FC in virginia?! whatever next!?
    Unfortunatly, FCP can't show a 4:3 title/action safe on a 16:9 frame.
The only work-around is to make one yourself in photoshop and plonk it over your clips when needed... not ideal, but does the job.

  • 4.3 title safe in 16.9 frame

Hi everyone. I have just started producing TV commercials in FCP Studio and using the latest JVC HD camera. I am shooting and editing 16.9 but got caught today with the title just out of the 4.3 zone. As 80% of viewers in Australia dont have 16.9 sets this is important. How can i create a 4.3 title safe zone to put on top of my 16.9 canvas window as a guide.

    Here is a free one...http://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/fcplugins/dh_widesafe.php

  • Safe Zone Suggestion

Hey guys, long time user, have an issue...
I love the ability to create different sequences in PPro CS5, but here is the goofiest thing I've ever seen. Why bond the safe zone settings to the project instead of to the sequence? Talk about broken...I create center-cut safe zones for my HD project, but when I open a SD sequence, time to go back into the project settings to reset back to DV safe zone percents.
It's pretty annoying. Anyone else with this issue?
By the way, my modified safe zone settings for center-cut safe HD are 39, 20, 32, 10, which works out pretty well and even keeps it pretty safe for scalers (dang APEX DTV boxes).

I haven't tried CS5, but in CS4 the safe zones are appropriate for each sequence.

  • Title Safe Overlays for just TV or Web also?

Do the title safe overlays need to be viewed only when editing video intended for broadcast TV or should they also be used when editing web video?
    Thanks.

Those are just for TV...the web shows the entire frame.

  • Can not turn on Title Safe overlay, only Timecode overlays work HELP.

For some reason when I try to turn on Overlays in the Canvas, only Timecode turns on. I can not seem to turn on Title Safe, please help.
    Sebastian

It means go into your System Preferences, select DISPLAYS and set the monitor to MILLIONS, not THOUSANDS. This isn't done in FCP, but in the operating system.

  • 16:9 Title Safe Overlays Suddenly Become 4:3 In 16:9 Sequence?

This question is on behalf of a friend.
He has shot 16:9 with his Canon XM2 and put the clips in an Anamorphic DV project.
It contains 2 sequences which both had 16:9 Title Safe overlays displaying in the Canvas.
Suddenly the overlays in one sequence have become 4:3 even though the Canvas window is still 16:9.
He thinks it happened after he selected View>Show Overlays but can't be sure.
How does he get the errant overlay to display once more as 16:9?

I received a phone call to say that the problem was solved though I couldn't really understand the reason. I was told that he had accidentally switched out of anamorphic.
However, if this were so, surely he would have had an obviously squashed 4:3 image with 4:3 Title Safe area.
Anyway, enough grey calls have been expended, so we can all forget it!

  • Title Safe for video..

So I just looked at a sample of my project on a TV and its cut off. What I'm doing now is exporting, re importing to FCE, turning on title safe, and scaling the entire video down to that first border (in between the 2 lines). Will that solve the problem or will it give me a black line around the video on a TV?
To illustrate what I'm talking about: If this is a segment of title safe (the tv safe and title safe lines)
    | v | + | v | The v is where I'm scaling my video boarder to.

The approach is correct, but the amount of scaling is very dependent on the TV. If you scale it to the second internal blue rectangle in the canvas (title safe) for sure you'll also have a black border around your video. In my experience it is sufficient to think of a rectangle slightly larger than the larger rectangle. But as I said it depends on the TV.
In my opinion the best approach is to avoid titles to exceed the title safe area, and important action to be close to the borders.
If you can connect your Mac to your TV using firewire (and a A/D converter - your camcorder might be used for that), you may monitor the effect of scaling directly on the TV during editing.

  • Crop marks for Center Cut in Title Safe?

I have recently picked up Premiere Pro 5.5 after the whole Final Cut Pro X fiasco, and a feature I loved and used all the time in Final Cut Pro 7 which was missing in Final Cut Pro X was crop marks for Center Cut in the title safe. I often have to do HD Projects that are broadcast on 4:3 TV center cut, so you need to make all the graphics for the center cut for SD, and then leave safe space for the HD version.
From what I can see I don't see these marks in Premiere Pro 5.5. Is there a place for feature requests for Premiere Pro, so I can put in a request as this is something that is really necessary in our production workflow.

Well, PrPro's Titler has the Center Align for both Vertical & Horizontal, but for guides, etc., it is lacking.
I use the tips in this ARTICLE to create alignment guides, as per my needs.
I have been filing Feature Requests for years, and have also asked for many of the element Alignment functions from PS.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I also create custom guides/grids for PiP, where I need to match the Scale & Position for the PiP footage.
PPS - I assume that you have looked at Title & Action Safe marks, and they just do not do it for what you need.

  • Title safe for widesceen

I am doing a show in widescreen now for the first time and was wondering if I should still use the title safe for the top and bottom. very stupid ? just wanted to know

Yes indeed. Only in the rarest of instances will a TV - even a 16:9 HD one - not use overscan to crop out some of the image.
Even if you are talking about shooting/editing in 16:9 but delivering a letterboxed (in 4:3) version for TV (so that there is no danger of overscan cropping from the top/bottom), it's still a good idea not to have text get too close to the edge.

  • Can you edit "title safe overlay"

just wondering if there is an easy way of customizing the title safe overlay
    ian

Alternatively you can use a reference frame. I've got a black frame with a thin white line where safe title is, I put it on a top layer and set the comp mode to Add. I mostly work in 4x3 safe in 16x9 and this is the easiest way of checking.
There is a very good Photoshop file that BBC engineering made which has all the cages you could want:

  • Flag for overriding TV zoom function? Or title-safe settings for zoomed video...

Here's the problem: I've got SD spots with correctly set up title-safe graphics. However, I keep seeing the spots playing on HD TV's where the picture has been set to zoom/stretch, and consequently the title graphics are stretching off-screen.
So the question's actually a two-parter: Is there a flag I can set in my video that will override an HD set's zoom function and force my spots to play unstretched on these TV's? Or (part two), what graphics boundary settings would I have to use to keep my title graphics on-screen even it the video is zoomed?
Regarding part two, yeah, I could experiment and find out the settings that will work, but I figure someone's run into this before and has an answer, which would save me a bunch of time...
    Thanks in advance...

Is there a flag I can set in my video that will override an HD set's zoom function
Thank God, no!  It's bad enough that disk authors can take away our right to skip FBI warnings and all the other BS on a DVD before we actually get to the movie.

  • Title/Action Safe Zones

    Hello,
I have started a home 1080p project. Almost all my source files are shot that I need 100% of view. I plan to have my finalized movie in different formats 1080p as well as DVD and to be viewed on iOS devices.
    My questions:
    1) is frames' content that is beyond Safe Zones will be visible on DVD/TV or/and exported movie file.
      2) if I resize all the frames to fit largest safe zone's frame, will I get black (unused space) visible in final movie?
    Thank you.

    Thank you Tom,
this project was shot using Canon's EOS 5D Mark II and all my background is photographic. These safe areas is something I need to consider in the future and learn somehow how much it is in viewfinder as there are no such marks in my camera.
Will see how it works when I have the project finalized.
