4.5 or 20.27 GBs Free?

I just finished an iTunes (ver 11.1.4 (62)) sync, while running it showed 4.5 free Gigs.  After it stops it shows 20.27 Gigs free, see pic.  As the iPod is only a 32 GB touch 5G, and I have 18.8 GBs of music I find this curious. How do I report a bug?

Don't know where the picture went.  Follow up: I tried to listen to some music this morning, and no music on the iPod.  I did a second sync this morning and after a few connection errors (wired and Wifi), and an iPod restart, the sync started...and...it is now reloading all of my music. No idea what's up.

  • Is there a way to download iOs7 without having 2.9 gbs free?

I've an 8gb iPhone 4 and currently only have around 400mbs free on my phone but if I only had to download the size of the update I could simply delete some songs. However as it is I'd have to delete over 50% of my music. Is there some way I can just download the update file without needing 2.9 gb free? Would it be possible to take all my music off my phone, download iOS7 delete the stock OS and put the music back on the device?
Any answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated as would any space saving tips!

Based on what I see here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone), I believe that the 3,1 is the one you want. I think the 3,2 was for China.

  • "Backup Disk Full" error with over 100 GBs free on disk!

The subject line pretty much says it all. Any idea why TimeMachine thinks my disk is full? I have 3 drives: internal has 60 GB available, LaCie 500 GB has 145 GB available and 1 TB drive has 101 GB available. The TB drive is set for the TM backups. What gives? Any ideas?

This is actually most of a normal, though lengthy, log. The end seems cut off, though.
Hmmm. The above prompted me to go back and check the log again, at which point I realized that I'd forgotten to take off the "backup" filter I'd used to find the TM part. Sorry!! I do things in too much a hurry sometimes (often, actually). Here's the log again, starting from the exact same spot but ending 10 minutes later. This time it's EVERYTHING - NO filter set:

Some of these things sound REALLY weird to me - for example, the references to vaccuuming. Too strange! <LOL>
If your Mac is running at midnight, the log should "turn over" -- the current one (system.log) renamed to system.log.0.bz2, the previous to system.log.1.bz2, etc., and a new system.log started. So what you're seeing started 12 minutes after midnight.
Yes, I figured that out. What I find strange about that process, though, is that Console appears to number the logs backwards. In other words, the one after the most recent one is #0 and the oldest one in the list is #7. Seems odd to me but there's obviously some kind of rationale at work there. :>)
I have no idea what those 30,000 files were, but I'd strongly suspect the permission repair you did earlier. I also have no idea what the initial 480 gb it thought it needed was about.
That would make perfect sense if it wasn't for the fact that the permission repair came about 8 hours AFTER the quoted part of the log! Another odd thing, which I think I've mentioned already, is that the error message appeared some time after I got up, had breakfast, put the dogs out, etc. so it was after 9 am or so. I cannot find a repeat of the copied part anywhere else during that morning or during that day, as far as that goes, so the error report obviously referred to the 12-2am activity but it sure took its time appearing.
IF this backup completed normally, then subsequent ones should be very quick and small, unless there were many large files changed.
Also, this whole process seems very slow. How much memory do you have, and was anything else of note running at this time? Do you have other performance issues?
Generally it IS very fast, from what I can tell. Most of the time I don't even notice it happening, even thought the drive is pretty noisy. I have 2 GB of Ram and most likely had Photoshop, InDesign, GoLive, FileMakerPro all running, plus miscellaneous "small" apps like bookkeeping stuff. If I open up any MS Office stuff I try to quit them as soon as I've finished using them, as they do seem to cause problems (why am I not surprised?!).
And check the TM menu bar icon and/or System Preferences > Time Machine to be sure you have normal completions.
Most of the time I do; at least, I do whenever I think to take a look. It seems to have been chugging along quite happily ever since this "event", so maybe all is well now? I'm going to go in and clear off the old stuff, moving it to the LaCie drive, now that the Permissions should (hopefully) let me. That should help, I would think. I've toyed with the idea of burning the really old stuff to DVDs but I'd just lose them in the stacks and stacks and stacks (ad infinitum it seems at times) of CDs/DVDs I have here after putting together magazines/websites for 10 to 15 years. I never throw anything out if I can help it, although I did regretfully part with the old floppies once I no longer had a floppy drive. It's amazing how often I have to search out some really old photo or something that someone wants to re-use when a dog dies or something.
Thanks again (I really can't say that often enough) for your help with this!

  • HT4847 Why is there only 5GB of Free iCloud Storage for the iOS Devices? Shouldn't the iDevices that have larger storage capacities than other iDevices, have more than 5GB of Free iCloud Storage offered?

I have a 32GB, 4th Generation iPod Touch, with only 5GB of free iCloud Storage offered. Why should I pay more for iPod Storage, when I receive the same amount of iCloud Storage as the iDevices with less iPod Storage? I understand the Marketing/Business point of view. However, it should appear that it is only logical to increase the offered capacity of free iCloud Storage to those of whom that have purchased an Apple Device with larger storage capacities.

It boils down to that is what Apple does. Just like you don't get a big computer discount if you use your computer more than I do. I don't get a better job because I'm smarter than you are. It's the way things are. You have no more entitlement to something than I do.
As for "business?" Of course it's business. Everything is business. To think this is special just to Apple is to ignore reality.
With iCloud storage we start on a level field - 5 GBs free. Thereafter, it's pay as you go.

  • How do I merge "free space" back into my OS X partition

Here is what I am currently looking at:
There is about 20 gb of free space that I was going to use for an Ubuntu install but have since changed my mind. To be safe I downloaded the Recovery Disk Assistant and installed it onto a flash drive. When I boot from that and enter disk utility I can drag my OS X partition into the free space and it appears to fill the drive. When I hit apply, it does it's thing and completes the partition but then instantly reverts to what it started out as with the free space still there. I tried a restart but found my drive to be in the same state. I have several back ups so I am not really worried about it, but I assumed this would work. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to just restore from the backup? Can I do that without affecting the bootcamp partition? I am on a Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.4.

You will need to add a new partition in that empty space. Be sure you format it Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that works, then remove the partition and try extending the OS X partition. Note that this will render your Boot Camp partition non-bootable.
Another possibility is that you should not extend the OS X volume all the way to the top of the Boot Camp partition. Leave about 2 GBs free. See if that works by providing enough space for the Recovery HD to be relocated.
Did you ever attempt to install Linux or to format that partition for Linux?

  • Synch displays 'not enough space' msg but there are more than 1Gb free

I have reset, my ipod nano (16Gb space) twice and still the audio bar shows there is 1.13 Gbs free and this is correct) but when synching, the error message says there is no space and then the audio bar shows no space available. I have untick and tick several times the synching of video and podcasts and still no luck.
    Any advice?

You can try restoring the ipod, this wipes it clean and itunes adds it all back UNLESS you don't have the files/songs on the PC

  • Shouldn't iCloud be 5GB free for each device?  If so, why is it tie to apple ID?

I don't quite understand how I can use iCloud effectively as Apple intends it if we are only given a 5gb space.  I have multiple ios and apple devices (like many of you) and I use one apple ID to purchase and manage my apps.  I cannot effectively backup all my devices let alone just my ios devices (3 iphones and 2 ipads).
Someone in apple store suggested I use one apple id to backup and then use the common id to purchase.  Hmmm... This sounds so Microsoft - Clumsy.
Maybe Apple should allow 5gb space for each device backup and data, so true benefit of iCloud can be shown.... Sight...

Just buy more space if you need it. The restriction is 5 GBs free per iCloud account, but you can purchase additional space.

  • Why does my MacBook have so little free space?

Received my MacBook yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to why there is so much room already taken up on the hard drive. I'm new to Macs, so does the OS and all take up that much space? When I booted it up it had about 73 GB available (I have the 80 GB model), and about 15-20 GB was already taken up. Even after erasing all of the trial version software it comes with, I still have a lot less free space than I would like. Any insights would be much appreciated.
    MacBook Pro 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

A full install of OS X will require about 6 GBs of space. In addition to that you have the iLife apps installed. If you also ordered iWork, then that's installed as well. On an 80 GB hard drive you will have about 73 GBs of actual total usable space. At least another 7-8 GBs will account for OS X and iLife apps leaving about 65 GBs free. Deduct about 1 GB for trial software and you're down to around 63-64 GBs. If you select the Macintosh HD icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window you should see displayed the amount of free space currently available.

  • Mac OS 10.4.6 won't startup

Need some expert help--Well, what a way to start a day--
    This is what is happening:
When I start-up I get the grey apple screen with the wheel and I am stuck in a loop--have tried restarting numerous times.
This is what occurred before the incident:
    Software Utilities detected two updates:
    --J2SE 5.0 Release 4 (PPC)
--Mac OS X 10.4.6 for PPC
I asked it to install and it appears the J2SE was, but half-way through the OS update, there was an error message saying something to the effect that the internet connection was lost and the OS files had been placed in the trash.
Then funny things started to happen (I plugged my iPod in at the same time--it is attached to my Firewire drive). I attempted to empty the trash as instructed and in the meantime had shut down all the rest of the apps--The trash would not empty and I couldn't quit the empty process, so did a hard restart.
This is what I have tried to do:
Start-up from my Mac OS 10.4. disk--it wants me to install and is a previous version of 10.4 and I don't have enough room on my hard drive to do an archive and install with the basic system.
Did a repair disk and repair disk permissions on the hard drive--no disk errors, but a great many permissions need to be repaired.
Please help! (and no I didn't back-up since I installed the new system 3 weeks ago, but the only really crucial item is my Entourage data file--everything else I store on my external firewire drive)--I can do an erase and install the software, but need to get those files off my hard drive!
If I can move the files so I can do an archive and install--my preference--I will also need the instructions on how to be a root user so I can get rid of the previous library folder.
I promise everyone out there that Backup will be my first task once I get back up and running.
Thanks in advance for your help. Caroline

    iBook   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

To do an Archive and Install you are going to need to provide about 6 GBs of free space on the hard drive. Even then that is a squeeze - more free space would be preferable under the circumstances. I would shoot to have at least 10 GBs free before starting the Archive and Install. If you install everything in Tiger then you will need even more free space. A complete install of Tiger will require about 4-5 GBs and you need about twice that much during installation plus additional space for operations and the Previous System Folder.
Before doing an Archive and Install you should boot from your Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive (you don't need to repair permissions.) Do not attempt an Archive and Install unless the hard drive is verified as OK.
If the Archive and Install is successful you will then want to download and install the 10.4.6 Combo Updater. You will also likely need to move some items from the PSF to the new installation. Particularly items in the /Library/Applications Support/ folder. These are not preserved in the Archive and Install.
You should be able to remove the unwanted PSF by dragging it to the Trash, then restart the computer. Upon restart simply empty the Trash.

  • I rented a movie using iTunes on my MacBook Pro, but it won't move to my first Generation Apple TV

I justed downloaded a Rented Movie from iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I did it through United Airlines e-miles to get credits. Now, when I try to move it from the  Rented Movies to the On "Apple TV" box on my Apple TV box, it stays in it for no longer than 35 seconds after I click on Apply and then moves back to the "Rented Movies" box. The only thing that appears in the Apple Symbol progress box is Syncing "Apple TV" is "Copying 2 of 2: IMG_0318" and them it moves back to the "Rented Movies Box. The same message appears if I click on Sync with it still in the "Rented Movies" box.
How can I overcome this problem? I have 29 days and 23 houors to solve this problem, but would like to do it for watching NLT Monday, 21 May 2012, evening!

Mr. Churchill - First, to answer your last questions:
Yes, the movie is fully downloaded, all 3.69 GBs.
No the Apple TV has 127.5 GBs of its 144.63 GBs free.
Second, I tried turning the Time Capsule WiFi rounter and Apple TV off (for at least two or three minutes, not the usual 10 seconds recommended) and I still could not move the movie.
Third, I severed the link and set it up again re-synced all 5,103 items back and still when I move the movies to the Apple TV box and Apply it, after 35 seconds it stops the sync and moves it back the the Rented Movies box.
Though I have set my Apple TV to sync with my MacBook Pro I cannot find a way to connect it to other than shared library, but not the "not shared library" (Is this what the Rented Movies are?). Is what Fletch is talking about int the "Rental Movies not showing up on Apple TV" discussion my problem and a solution?

there are three possibilities: you have not upgraded to version 2.0 or in Summary on the ATV device in iTunes, you should look whether you have it set up to only sync or otherwise disables movie syncing, or you have not paired your Mac to the ATV (on your tv, settings/computers/connect to itunes library - not shared library)

I have ran a hardware scan on my Hard disk and have noticed few of the tests getting failed, I  have gone through many of  posts in this fourms and understood that, my HDD is having some problem and it may crash any time.
I have taken back up of my factory default recovery disks in to DVD's.  However I would like get clarified on  few things related to replacing the existing HDD and setting up windows 7 in my new HDD.
    1) After replacing my OLD HDD , In my new hard disk do I need to create the C disk  with same size as that of OLD HDD for the OKR to work and restore everything properly.
    2)  Will the one key recovery feature  work with my new HDD as well? If not , what should I do make it work?
    3) Will the OEM parition( having factory default backup )be automatically created in new HDD ?

  • I replaced a podcast episode on my rss feed but it won't delete in iTunes.

Hi. I recently started a podcast and we just became searchable in iTunes yesterday. After recording our second episode a few days ago, one of the podcast hosts finished editing and added the media file to our website and rss feed. I guess he never listened to it before doing so because there is a bad audio problem (one part is way louder than the others.) We have since fixed the audio problem and replaced the file on the post but when I listen to it on iTunes it is still playing the old episode with the audio problem.
I have deleted the entire post for episode 2 and currently episode 1 is the only one in the rss feed (as far as I know.)
It's still showing up on my computer's iTunes and iPhone podcast app. I cleared my iTunes cache and went into settings and deleted the podcast from the podcast app, I unsubscribed and resubscribed and episode 2 is still showing up.
Am I missing something? Is there a better way to clear the cache?
I had thought that subscribing would automatically link to what's happening in my feed but I can't seem to shake that old episode.
I am ready to make a new post with the fixed audio file but I would like to make sure that a.) The old one is gone so that two Episode 2s don't show and b.) that there isn't somewhere the messed up audio file is hiding.
Here is the link to my iTunes podcast feed:

Here is the feed that iTunes is pulling from:

  • I went to install OSX since it needed to be updated, but now it won't let me install it.

I went to the app store and it said I had an update for the software. I continued on, waiting for it to get to the install page and I tried to install it but it said my hard drive was damaged, but it was working perfectly fine a few minutes before. I went to repair the disk, but it said there was a problem. I went to varify it, but it stopped and said error, saying that the numbers didnt match up. I had to partition my external hard drive so that I could continue using my laptop for school. Does anyone know why this could be or what I could do to fix this?

You cannot perform anything repairs or formatting without first booting from a different device such as a bootable installer DVD or in the case of Lion and later the Recovery HD. The latter is done as follows:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the arrow button below the icon.
If you still cannot boot the computer to the Utilities screen, then you either have no Recovery HD or it's damaged. Your option, then, is to use Internet Recovery provided your computer can do so: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery and all models thereafter.
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Once the menu appears you can select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. Use Disk Utility to Repair the HD as well as Repair Permissions. Then select Restart from the Apple menu. You can try updating again.
Be sure you also have sufficient space on the hard drive. If you have less than 15 GBs of free space, then you need a bigger hard drive or you need to move enough of your files to another hard drive until you have at least 20 GBs free.

  • HT201364 i can install the os x because the is "You need 4.95 GB of available space to download OS X Mavericks. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space." however, my mac air his space . so how can i

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
In reality you will need a minimum of 12 GBs of free space to both download and install. Even then you still will need at least another 10 GBs free or a total of about 22 GBs.

  • HDV Print to Video

Have read all threads for the last year on this, and have not been able to Print to Video. It starts fine, transfers via FW to my Sony FX-1. After about 2-4 min. it starts freezing for a split second, then jumps forward, only to freeze again every few seconds. If I have mirror on desktop on, the video on the desktop does NOT freeze, but plays normal. I have no problems capturing hdv video. Here is a list of the things I have tried.
    1. Deleted FCP preferences, and rebooted.
    2. Shut off energy saver and screen saver.
    3. Tried both FW connections and disconnected ALL other FW (400 & 800) devices.
    4. Tried different FW cables and 3 different cameras.
    5. Exported the project out as a single QT HDV file and imported that to the timeline.
    6. Mixdown audio. The timeline and all setting are 1440x1080 hdv & 1080i60.
    7. The single QT HDV file is saved on an internal SATA drive with >200 GBs free, not with FCP, OSX
I would be willing to try any suggestions. Thanks for any help.

About the only thing left to do is a total rebuild of your startup disk I'd think... HDV isn't my favorite format... but if you HAVE To print back to tape, you've not much of a choice than to edit with it natively. Hey, if you've not done this in a while, it's time to do so in any event. I do it at least every few months with my own systems, and also at the school I teach at part time, there's about 70 FCP stations. We do it every semester and it serves us extremely well. Stable systems each with about 10 or so Users on each... no crashing, and all works as advertised.
FWIW... few need to record back to HDV for any reason... It's not a deliverable format for broadcast in most all instances, and it was intended to be a consumer format... see the original press release from Sony on this years ago... so running it in a Pro NLE like FCP isn't going to be a flawless thing. I'll wager that iMovie does it better! (Though I've never tried it myself) Most pros deliver HDCAM if going to broadcast, and we don't edit HDV natively. Instead, we capture it as ProRes, then use a card like a Kona 3 or an IoHD to turn it into uncompressed HD for delivery.
If after a totally clean installation of the system startup disk still prevents you to print to video with HDV, I'd suggest you fill out a feedback form in the FCP menu. Apple's FCP team reads and logs every single one of these I'm quite sure. They don't read these forums in fact much. They are for user to user discussion.
    Hope this helps you.
    Jerry
