4.5Mb/s download speed on a 20Mb/s whats gives choked ouT???

Sup world,
I think you can see my specs below, not sure this is my first post. I have a Cisco Valet i bought a few
months ago. I used to use it with my windows pc and my roomate uses it with his windows pc and his
2009 macbook pro. All of those machines download at 20Mb/s but my Macbook will only download
at 4.5Mb/s it would sometimes go up slightly higher but never anything steady. I bought it used and
at the sellers house the internet performed extremely fast on his connection. Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks

shcaerp,
A little harsh, don't you think?
There is an AirPort Extreme card in the Mac computer, and it's likely that the OP thought this was the correct forum. He did mention that it was his first post and was not sure about things. Please show some understanding and try to help if you want to post on the forum.
Some polite instructions and redirection to the correct Getting Online and Networking forum would have done the trick nicely.

  • BT Infinity and weird download speeds

    Greetings!
This is the first time I've been with BT, I always had virgin media then when I moved out I was forced to go with Sky for my broadband which they could only manage 3-4mb. I've recently had BT infinity installed (3-4 weeks now) and I'm not sure what to make of it.
Although Sky's download speed was lower, I seemed to get more out of it. In the way of I can see on speedtest.net and speedtester.bt that my ping is low (15ms) and my speed is often between 30-35mb (funnily enough tonight it's sitting at 25mb) however p2p traffic is slow (yes I know it's throttled) but even over Internet explorer it's slow. If I was download a file, say a windows update or a patch for a game with sky I would get a constant 1-2mb download speed with bt it never goes over 200-300kb. Surely this can't be normal?
I may give BT a ring but due to work hours it'll most likely be on the weekend now. Just seems strange that everything points to a decent download speed but when it actually comes to downloading it's pretty slow.
Thanks in advance for any tips/help/suggestions.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. At present I have my laptop done over wireless using a b/g/n/ adapter. To be honest I have yet to try and connect my laptop directly to the router as this kinda defeats the point? I'm assuming you're thinking along the lines of I should get faster download speeds over a wired connection, which i agree with. But, surely 300kb is still low on a 40mb connection?
I'm in work at the moment so can't check out the test results. But will post them later.
    Thanks,

  • Stuck at max 0.5mbs download speed

For the past 2 weeks I have been unable to wxceed 0.5mbs download when for many years I had speeds ranging between 4mbs and 7mbs.
An engineer hsa been recently and tested the line all the way back to the exchange - OK
To eliminate internal problems I have tried the router directly into the test switch of the master socket - still 0.5.
I have just run speedtester and was concerned at the result:

  • Q180: Slow download speeds even slower then upload speed?

Just looking for answers. I have recently brought a Q180, using it wifi upstairs. And I just upgraded to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem gateway (Moto SBG 6580) I have Charter as my IP I pay for data plus 30 Mbps download. My son's laptop, my HP laptop and my Mac book (used up stairs) all seems to have benefited from the upgraded modem. Showing 20-25 Mbps. Charter provides a webpage (speedtest.charter.com) to test your up/download speeds. The Q180 shows an average of 4 Mbps! And uploads of avg. 6 Mbps!? Q180 shows 811.N as selected and full signal strength of 54 Mbps?
Where could the chocking be coming from? How can I fine tune the Q? Any help would be really appreciated

that website for testing is crap i have tested mine and i get http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1593897921.png 20mb down and 3.5mb up and i am on 50mb down and 5mb up
try something like speedtest.net and also do a pingtest.net
even speedtest shows my speed as 35mb and 4mb a little better but i am in the uk

  • Terrible Download speeds in Hoboken, NJ on VDSL...

    Hello,
I'm on a VDSL setup in Hoboken and have been experiencing awful download speeds all day.  Upload speeds are at the normal 5MB range.
I'm provisioned for 20MB but usually get around 23-24MB DL speeds.  Today I'm lucky if I can get 4MB.  I've tried various speed tests, wireless and wired connections and haven't really changed anything about my setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you rebooted the vdsl modem when you were doing your reboots?

  • Download Speeds

    Hi
I've just order but had a couple of questions about expected download speeds.
The estimate for my line is 63MB down / 20MB up.
Currently we are on ADSL connecting aroud 6MB and getting 650kbs on downloads ( max speed )
What sort of speed should we expect when downloading large files from web sites, torrents (opensuse etc), steam etc
Will time of day make much difference ?
    Thanks

  • 5Mb drop in Speed

    Hi guys
I live in a very rural area, however was pleased when I piggybacked onto my neighbours connection and received 6Mb.
I opted for BT and was installed last week. I had 5 days of constant 6Mb connection. Yesterday I did about 20 speed tests and got 1.8Mb, and today I restarted the Hub and am now capped at 1.5Mb.
After some investigations on the community forums, I have noticed that there are some older posts on here from  regarding Sync to the DSLAM and IP profiles being restricted and basically having to wait 3 days for it to reset..
My house is prone to power trips due to an old oven hob, and coincidentaly I had one 3 days ago, and yesterday. After reading the older posts this would suggest I have lost sync to the dslam, and my ip profile needs to be reset, and will be in about 3 days?
I have a BT Home hub 4 and understand from older posts you guys need the SNR readings to identify any issues, 6 being normal?:
    15:42:54, 10 Sep.
( 68.000000) DSL noise margin: 26.00 dB upstream, 11.60 dB downstream
Obviously these seem quite high, however Im no expert and was hoping someone could shed some light.
I have connected to my neighbours connection, who have had no power cuts and they are indeed still receiving 6Mb.
I just want someone to tell me it will be alright, I will have speeds of 1.5 for the next few days, however after my connection to the DSLAM has reset and my IP profile is reset I will be flying again!
    Many thanks
    Geraint

  • IPhone truncated download speed?

We have 7mb download speeds at our home. I check the speed via our laptops and indeed it is 7mb. When I test the speed via the iPhone the best it can do is 2mb. Is there an issue with my iPhone or is this simply a limitation on the hardware?

Cool idea. Yea, I am at work now and we have a T1. I just used the same app for the test that you did and the download speeds are upwards 12MB. Also, I used that same app to test at home. So, the truncated iPhone NIC theory is now officially toasted. The question does remain as to why this happens with the iPhone. Case in point: a Macintosh and two PCs have a steady 6.5mb average download and on the same network the iPhone is chugging along at 2mb.
