4.8 gigs of "Other" on iPhone; wiped out music on sync

I have an old version iPhone. When I last went to sync to my computer, it completely wiped all music content from the phone. Now the main iphone page in iTunes is showing I have 4.8 gig of "other" content on the phone, so more than half my space is used up for what I don't know. Any thoughts on what "other" is, how to delete it so I can get capacity back? Thanks,

When coded correctly, other is all the information on your phone which is not music, videos or photos. Basiclly its the contacts/calendar/apps, etc.
What happened here was since the sync was interrupted your music/vids were improperly synced by the OS. The iPhone doesn't know what the data is so it codes it as other. Since it doesn't know what the data is, it doesn't know what to do with it or how to delete it.

  • ITunes and iPhone wiped out - Can I reload apps?

To make a long story short - my iPhone and iTunes were wiped out.
Is it possible to reload all the apps I had and paid for?
My online iTunes account has record of me paying for all of them, so I'm hoping this is possible.

  • IPod Classic songs were wiped out - will not sync with iTunes

iPod Classic turned on and has zero music - somehow wiped out.  Will not sync to iTunes - iTunes freezes when iPod is connected but works fine when no iPod connected.  iPod was reset to the original date of 2000 and mostly sits with the apple logo.  iTunes has current version - tried resetting the iPod but iTunes still does NOT recognize the iPod.

Fixed it after some more fiddling - restored iPod from the frist sync a few days back, and then tried again.

  • Apple TV purchases - will they get wiped out by a sync to a new computer?

Ok, here's my issue: I've got an Apple TV, currently synced to an old and near-inoperable computer, through which I've bought several movies which, given the state of my old computer, only reside on the Apple TV.
I'm hoping to sync the Apple TV to my new computer which I understand will wipe out the old content on the Apple TV that was synced from the old one. I'm OK with this. But my concern is for the movies bought through the Apple TV - will these also be wiped out when I do the sync to the new computer? I'm hoping not of course.
Thanks for all tips and pointers.

Replying to my own question for the sake of anyone looking for this answer in the future. Got impatient and went ahead and disconnected Apple TV from the old computer and synced it to my new one. All purchased movies were preserved - didn't have to do anything, Apple TV just held on to them and has now allowed me to pass them over to the new computer.

  • Iphone wiped out

My iphone has been acting weird, someone suggested it needed updates. I tried to update it but it said it would not update until I restored it, when I restored it - it wiped clean. There is NOTHING, no service, nothing.

You are not addressing Apple here. We are users just like you that are here to try and answer technical questions. When you say there is nothing, did you get any error messages when you did the restore? Is there anything on the screen, such as a picture of a USB cable and the word iTunes? What else have you tried to do?

  • Iphone wiped out after update to 4.0 failed

I connected to itunes and was advised of update 4.0 (or something similar) so clicked on update. After some 20+ minutes I received a message saying update had failed. I tried to press restore but nothing happened, now I have a completely dead iphone and cannot get anywhere with itunes as it seems to have erased the "my iphone" from the menu. Can anyone please advise what I can do to get my phone back?
    Thanks, keithssd

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
cannot get anywhere with itunes as it seems to have erased the "my iphone" from the menu.
    Try the instructions here.

  • Iphone wiped out airport

Since i hooked up the iphone my wireless airport access on my desktop no longer works ,,,the network works all the other computers in the house can get on line except the machine the iphone is plugged into any ideas?

Well if you got an Open Network, are running in B/G Mode, Have factory restored Extreme many times, and restored iPhone. The only other thing I can advise....
In the Airport Extreme settings you have an option to change Channel from Automatic to whatever else you want. Try switching the channel to channel 6, or 9 update and see if this changes the results. Now if you change the channel iPhone may not see it right away. So Toggle WiFi mode on and off.
If Toggle WiFi on and off does not work, Hold down Sleep/Wake Button and Home Button till you see Apple Logo, iPhone will restart, Then see if it sees the network.
You may need to do the Sleep/Wake and Home each time you change the channel on router just to ensure it reboots and scans area for local network. Let me know how the channel changes go.

  • I cannot sync calendars from the iphone to the ipad but works the other way aroung.  Also music not syncing. Everything else seems to sync fine

I am unable to sync my calendars from the iphone 4S to the ipad but the calendars do sync from the ipad to the phone.  Music also does not sync either way.  Everything else seems to be OK.  Anyone have this problem?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.
With regard to your music, what exactly are you expecting to happen.

  • My computer crashed while updating my iPhone, wiped out all my songs from my phone, iTunes and hardrive.  Had over 2500 songs, anyway to get these back?

I lost all my songs off my phone, iTunes and my hard drive when iTunes was updating my phone.  I had over 2500 songs that I've collected over YEARS, is there anyway to get the music back?  Or do I really need to start my collection all over again?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your comptuer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
In the U.S, yo can use the new icloud beta version to retrieve itunes purchases.  Open itunes store, click Purchased under Quick Links

  • What gets wiped out if I sync my phone to iTunes

By design, the iPhone will sync iTunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL iTunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you replaced your computer, or hard drive, your phone will see this as a "new" computer. The iTunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else,
The prompt from iTunes if very ominous. I want to clarify what it is going to wipe out.
We have two iPhones and an iPad. I don't know if either of the phones have been synced to iTunes on any of our computers. We use iCloud backup, so we have not felt the need to backup to our Windows PCs. When the iPad was first purchased, the version of iOS it had required iTunes to activate it. I think that was iOS 4. We immediately updated to iOS 5 and life was good. But that first activation was done on an old laptop that is long gone. Anything we do with iTunes and these devices these days, we want to do on my wife's newer laptop.
So, I say all that to clarify that I have no clue what system (if any) these devices are officially synched to. I just want to rip a seminar from an mp3 CD to my iPhone. Imagine my surprise when iTunes tells me my only option is for it to first wipe out my phone
I have the normal ton of pictures and a few videos I have captured on the phone. The normal ton of apps. And I recently entered the 20th century (yeah, still catching up) and purched a CD on iTunes on my phone. This is my first attempt at transfering music (really a seminar, an MP3 CD) to my phone. I have not synced any pictures to my phone from iTunes on any PC. But I have recently downloaded a couple pictures of my grandson from Facebook. Those all appear as if I took them on this phone. I also have the email client set up to access 4 different mail servers (iCloud, Gmail, AOL, work) and calendar set up to access work, Google Calendar, and iCloud. And a ton of contacts. All of that is backed up to iCloud.
So do I have anything I need to "extract ... using third party software"? Or will backup to iTunes on the PC get everything?
Is it really going to wipe out everything on my phone before transfering this one audio CD?
really disappointed at how difficult this is.

did you backed it up? with itunes or icloud backup?

  • IPhone wipes out photos when syncing

I think this issue may be connected to the iTunes 8.2 update. Twice now, when I have synced my iPhone it claims that no photos were synced as there was not enough memory for all of them. This in spite of the fact that there was 40MB of space left WITH all the photos on it prior to syncing. Does anyone have an idea about what is causing this? Apple's lack of e-mail customer support is really infuriating.

Sit on the phone with customer support "all day"? You sound like a woman. I bet you use the words always and never often also.
Have you ever called AppleCare? If not, you do not know what you speak. Your original post was posted 2 hours ago. Had you called AppleCare at that time instead, you would have been off the phone long ago and likely would have the problem resolved. But since your time is so valuable, you would rather exchange email instead starting with you explaining the problem, followed by recieving an email maybe with some questions that need to be answered before troubleshooting steps are provided, or with a form letter response that includes troubleshooting steps for you to try. You try the troubleshooting steps provided, which may work but if not, back to exchanging email. Sounds like a great time saver, for someone who has no experience whatsoever with calling AppleCare.
The handful of times I have called AppleCare, I wasn't on hold for more than 5 minutes, and I was off the phone in less than 30 minutes with an answer or the problem resolved. Certainly not "all day", which my GF sometimes uses when she is whining about something.
Call, I mean email Dell Technical support and ask if they recommend using 99% of your hard drive's storage capacity, or if using over 90% is recommended. I'll bet you dollars to donuts they won't recommend it since data loss is very likely when doing so, and it affects performance.
The iPhone runs an optimized version of OS X, and has RAM, a limited amount of RAM. OS X makes use of RAM dynamically, but the optimized version of OS X with the iPhone doesn't seem to do this as well as the full OS X version on a Mac. Possible that the optimized version of OS X makes use of a RAM disk when the RAM has been depleted.

  • HT1535 Why can't I use the browser feature to visually organize my iphone or ipad music when syncing?

In the older versions of iTunes, you used to be able to use the column browser when organizing your iPhone or iPad media, in the same way you could when organizing your iTunes songs by viewing the genres, ablums, and artists either on top or on the side. But with the last few iTunes updates, I can no longer use the column broswer when I connect my iPhone or iPad. I find this quite inconvenient because I am constantly updating my music content and I like to see what artists, ablums, and songs I have on my device without scrolling down a long list of 2500+ songs. Any insight?

Really. This is something that shouldn't even be happening.
Apple, please enable iTunes to sort connected iPhone's libraries with the "column browser".
    Please.
    I'm asking nicely

  • Hard drive wiped out unable to sync to restore. help!

i had a problem with songs skipping or jump to next. i restored it with same problem and was told to wipe the hard drive. lost os unable to sync (syncs but unable to restore)from itune. help please.

The iTunes content sync is one-way: Computer to phone. You can transfer iTunes purchased music & apps: Connect your phone, iTunes running, first make sure your computer is authorized: Store>Authorize this Computer, then: File>Transfer Purchases. For music ripped on your own, you'll have to use third-party software to first extract such from your phone, as Apple makes no provisions to do so. Do this before you do anything else:
