Can I close my macbook while Time Machine is doing it's thing?
I've read some conflicting info on sleep and TM
It seems like I should be able to close it and walk away while it does its business.
I'm all confused ???

If closing your lid forces the machine to sleep, you will force TM to abort.
If closing the lid allows TM to continue, then it's OK.
TM does not work while the computer is sleeping.
Since TM usually takes a minute or less after the first backup unless you have created a large file, why close the lid?
My last backup took 1 minute 30 seconds. Hardly time to close the lid and open it again.
I'm doing a full backup so it's taking awhile.
Do people leave their external drive plugged in with TM on all the time??
For me , I'm sure once a week or so will be fine.

My Time Capsule is archiving my Time Machine backup to a USB drive attached to it. I have initiated this process on my macbook (on the same lan with the Time Capsule), on which I am monitoring the archiving progress on the Airport Utility. Still almost a couple of days to go... The archive is happening.. I turned off the computer it was setup from.. running Mavericks and latest utility once I got it started. I have been checking from v6 utility on Mountain Lion.. and it is excruciatingly slow. But is running.
I can check the progress but v6 utility is utterly and completely useless.. it continually shows the same numbers.
v5 utility does show it is crawling along.

v5 utility shows the actual progress. Actually tells you total and amount backed up so far.
Amazing how advanced v5 utility is over v6.
The estimate of 10hours is probably correct at the present rate of progress. I suppose for 500GB, around 50GB/hr is about what we expect from TM backups etc.
I will post another picture in an hour and probably kill it then before I die of watching paint dry.

I want to know if this is possible before I reformat the drive to the 'journaled' format to make it usable for time machining. And if it is possible, how do I do it? Just save/transfer stuff to the external hard drive like I normally would or do I have to di something different? I just can't afford to have all 77 GB of my pictures on my internal hard drive anymore.
Also, I am mainly trying to set up time machine so I can have a backup before I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

Time capsule is an Apple product, a combination router/HD specific for wireless TimeMachine.
You can use Ext HD for saving files to etc as well
Time Machine needs it own partition and needs to be the first partition on the Harddrive.
Reformatting the drive GUID, extended journeled

Technically, yes.
I try not to. Think of the "composite picture". If you have several files spread across several system-level and application-level directories, and related-files are changing at different rates, you may save different files that do not "match".
Given that most backups after the initial one should only take 5 minutes at most, I like to let at least a few backups each day be uninterrupted while I take a short walk.

Time machine won't disturb its contents, except to add a potentially huge folder there, which will grow to fill the disk with copies of your backups. (Backing up, then) partitioning (and then restoring from backup) your old's internal hard drive will keep your pro's Time Machine from consuming all free space.

Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?

Can I copy messages from my Time Machine ~/Library/Mail/V2 to Macbook?

Hi, I wonder if I can copy my old messeges from time machine to my new mailbox via ~/Library/Mail/V2 . Maybe I am doing something wrong but all the messages i have copied are not showing in the mail.app and I do not know how to index them.

Not likely.. the files from the card are loaded into the computer via iphoto I guess.. they are saved in a different format.. you cannot copy those files back to the camera card. But you should still have a backup of the photos .. in TM which is the backup of the iphoto library.
Almost nobody I have heard from will save the original files in raw format. To do that you would need to open the card via Finder and copy the raw files to a folder on the computer which you then backup by TM?? Is that how you have done it??
Tell us more info but most likely you need help from folk in iphoto section or aperture or whatever software you use.
I can help you to recover stuff on your hard disk to recover.. but not on SD card unless you actually included it in your backup which would be most unusual.

Can I move all data from time machine backup to another external drive & work from it?

Hi all, the harddrive on my macbook died (2nd time in a year) & I had a new one put in that's much smaller than the old one. Can I move everything from my time machine backup onto a seperate external drive and work directly from that on my laptop/imac? At the mo. I don't think time machine will recognise my computer as it's a new drive etc. Thanks Jenny.

What exactly do you want to do?
Is it that you wish to extract an older version of some documents to edit, but leave the original intact?
You can Restore an older version from TM and choose not to replace the current one.
Or, do you wish to install the OS on your new drive, and migrate all the information from the TM backup to the new isntallation?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

HT1338 I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine on my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive. It was going fine when my 2 yo knocked the hard drive. Now TM said "failed" and the Mac refuses to recognize the external hard drive. Help please?

I have rebooted, tried all I can think of, but no acknowledgement of the drive. The drive itself makes noise and vibrates as if working, but nothing from the Mac. I was wondering because I used time machine having mountain lion, does it affect anything when if i purchase a mavericks macbook pro? the just announced one. So I don't know if there was an update on my mac that might affect it in any way...

It's ok you can use your ML TM to transfer your account. iPhoto library and other things will be upgraded when you open the apps.
At the end of the Apple article it says:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.

Computer is supposed to seamlessly back up to Time Capsule via wi-fi, but ever since upgrading to Yosemite it's been broken. "can't connect to a current Time Machine back up disk" is the message that pops up, just after it shows me the files on my Time Machine for a split second. So it sees them, for a moment, then it pops up the message and freezes my computer. I have to do a hard reboot. I tried the instructions here: OS X Yosemite: If Time Machine can’t find your backup disk, and various instructions I've found on the internet regarding fixes from deleting plist files to whatever.
This is very annoying, I'd like to fix the problem. And also vent, this *****, this isn't why I purchase Apple products, it's a known problem and they aren't publishing a fix. Apple isn't very elegant anymore, it's cumbersome, troublesome, and I'm wondering why I'm spending the extra when those were the benefits I was paying for.

Don't upgrade next time until the following version is out.. I updated not long ago to Mountain Lion.. and it works very nicely. Apple is playing MS game.. don't fix the problems.. just release a new fangled OS. So issues that have existed over Mavericks and all its updates are still there and in fact exacerbated in Yosemite.
To fix your issue.. You may need to do some major work.. did you upgrade or clean install Yosemite??
I guess it is too much to ask if you still have your previous OS install intact?? Making a bootable clone before updating is a necessity now IMHO.
TM does not really allow you to go back to the previous OS.. but you can clean install Mavericks or whatever you used and then recover your files.
To fix Yosemite a clean install can be a big help. Especially as wireless is a major flaw.
Do you own the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter? It is like $35 and a well worthwhile gadget to own.. since I think your mac has no ethernet port.
See if it works ok by ethernet.
Otherwise factory reset the TC and try mounting it manually in finder by IP address, not name.
ie in Finder use Go, Connect to server and type in the IP.. thusly
SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with actual IP)
It is a bit tricky if the IP is not static.. but start there and see what happens.
Remember to save the password to the TC in the keychain when asked.

Crashed OS MacBook Lion Time Machine Question

I have an older back up of my MacBook in Time Machine on a external hardrive.
Is is possible to add to the backup in target mode? The computer will not boot right now, but I can get to the volumes via target. I can access the revovery HD when I hold down the option key starting up.
The MacBook has some sort of infixable sibling error, which is getting pregressivly worse. Additionally I've up graded to Lion since the Origional back up and partioned the drive, so it wouldn't really match the origional Time Machine back-up.

I really appreciate both your efforts but let me clarify a few things here before you continue posting incorrect information.
#1 - I have not done anything in the Finder that will hurt anything. Opening a folder in finder is like going to the terminal and running a "ls" command.
#2 - The reason for my original post is becaue this is def. a bug or undocumented feature. Time Machine backups should be backwards compatible.
There is no reason for me to open Time Machine and not be able to open an older backup done in Snow Leopard, UNLESS, it is an expected issue. If this is the expected behavior, the first time one connects the drive, the system should provide some type of warning.
Time Machine displays my older backup dates in Time Machine, but I can't select them to read, restore or anything. Then I went to the finder to open the connected USB drive to confirm if the files were there or not, as my hard drive space is still occupied.
You CAN manually copy files from a Time Machine backup drive. This causes NO ISSUES, unless you start messing with the files that Time Machine uses to organize the data being displayed on the app.

Wipe new Macbook Pro - Time Machine Backup Issue

I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro, i'd previously been using a Mac Pro - through which everything was backed up through Time Machine onto a external HD.
When i started using the Macbook Pro i by-passed the initial Migration request as i had'nt yet got the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable for my external HD (have one now).
When i tried routing timeline on the MBP to the Time Machine backup on my external HD it ended up creating a separate user account on my MBP. This isn't what i wanted - i thought i could pick up where the Mac Pro left off but have'nt been able to figure out how. It's also slowed the MBP down alot, so i want to wipe it and start afresh - hopefully figuring out the Time Machine issue in the process.

You can by doing this:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
When the system restarts you will be in the Setup Assistant from which you can initiate a migration from a Time Machine backup. In this way you will not end up with multiple user accounts.

Can Yosemite read a snow leopard Time Machine backup. Once I installed Lion over SL and it was a disaster since I could not get any docs or photos back, so had to put SL back on my old iMac.
Will 10.10 give the same problem or is there a way to migrate the old 10.6.8 data to 10.10?

Yes, you can do that. The only limitation is that you can't encrypt the backup volume.
