4 Channel Audio mis-capture?

Ive just imported footage from a Canon XL1 and in FCP im finding i have no sound. I think i need to redo the capture and look more closely at the output in the camera to isolate the two extra channels. What im seeing in FCP is a signal in the sound graph indicating a signal but im not hearing anything ( the volume is up and there are no headphones). When i click play in the canvas window i get a tiny blip of audio then silence and when i click in the viewer i get nothing. I will add to this once i recapture but maybe someone could break this down technically. Theres something there yet its inaccessible..

Just to close this a shut down and restart was enough to get my audio playing. First time thats happened.

No, you cannot capture four channels. That was the question you asked. You can capture two channels. If you have one mic going into each of the two channels that make up the first pair you can capture them. Many cameras allow you to use 32k audio and record four channels, two stereo pairs. FCE will not capture the second stereo pair.

  • Add channel of audio after capture

I captured some HDV footage of an interview, started editing a sequence with it, and then realized that only the left audio channel (boom mic) had been captured, but not the right channel (lavalier). I have the right channel audio as an aiff. Is there any way I can add it to the master clip so that I can get both channels as I continue editing the project? Recapturing is not an option.
    Thank you for any insight.

Select the video (with left ch audio) in the browser, then select the single right channel audio in the browser...command-click on either and select 'merge clips'.
You will be prompted how to sync the clips. If the clips have identical timecode, you could use that. If not, you would want to set inpoints or outpoints on the clips (which are in sync) prior to merging them and select either of those options.
FCP will create a new clip in your browser.
In the FCS1 (FCP5) manual, this would be found in Volume II, Pg. 48.

  • Unable to monitor audio during capture

I'm using FCP6 to capture footage shot with a JVC GY-HD100U at HDV 720p24. I'm using a JVC BR-HD50 deck to capture from, connected to my MacPro 3 GHz quad via firewire.
In the Audio/Video Setting dialog box, the Sequence Preset is "HDV 720P24". My Capture Preset is "HDV", Device Control Preset "HDV FireWire". Video Playback shows "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)" and offers only the options of None and Digital Cinema Desktop Preview–Main as alternate choices. Both HDV options are greyed out. The Audio Playback option is set to Default.
With this setup, controlling the deck remotely from the capture window, I get video but no audio. The only audio I get is when the deck is connected to my video monitor and I use it to monitor the output of the deck. The audio is there when I play back the clips after capture but I cannot monitor the sound with the computer's speakers. If I go to the A/V Devices tab, under Video, it shows the same "[Missing] Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) with the same choices described above, and the Options button next to it doesn't do anything.
Can anyone think of anything I've missed in the initial setup?

    Keith,
For whatever reason (perhaps the intense processor needs) HDV does not allow you to monitor your audio during capture. The computer just will not do it. What I have done, if I really want to hear what's happening durning capture, is plug my speakers into the headphone jack of my XL H1. Due to the processing that's going on, the audio "lags" behind the video by a couple of seconds.
I'm pretty sure this is not a setup problem, but just a limitation due to the nature of your format.
    Hope that helps!

I'm getting the following message on screen when attempting to capture video  "audio only capture selected, video preview disabled."  How can I get the view preview back?

FCE doesn't allow for audio only capture, it's in a twist somewhere.
    Try trashing the FCE preferences.

  • Headphone jack no right channel audio

So recently the right channel audio stopped working for my headphone jack. Any Ideas on how to fix this?

    I found a temporary solution :
    1) Open the registry editor (Windows key + R, then enter "regedit")
    2) Go to this directory :
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001\Settings\Drv7246_DevType_0892_SS146210c7
or something that looks like that
    3) Change the settings as following :
    Pin 14 : 02 00 00 00
    Pin 18 : 04 00 00 00
    Pin 19 : 04 00 00 00
    4) Restart
    5) Check if it applied. If it doesn't, try again. Sometimes it doesn't work at the first try.
It actually remaps the Mic-in jack in a audio output. The sound coming out is a bit lower than the original output but it's still better than the crappy sound I've had since the headphone jack became a piece of .

  • Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

    Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
    (headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !

  • A way to adjust audio when capturing video?

I transfered some video/audio and am having distortion in some audio.
The original audio does not peak and when I captured it in Premiere CS6, it is not peaking out, but when I play back, I can hear occasional distortion. The video is up at:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNNgJiZMrRA
Does this sound like it is overmodulating or is something else happening?
Is there a way to adjust audio when capturing audio or is it a straight feed? Wondering if I can lower the audio input to try to fix.
thanks in advance for your help,
    Charlie

How are you capturing the content? Because in my experince premiere doesn't have a way to adjust the audio levels of what your capturing. However if you post how you are capturing the footage in more detail I might be able to help. Please tell me exactly how you have everything hooked up.
For example if you have the camera hooked straight to the computer or if you're using a capture card if so what kind. Some capture cards have audio gain settings which might be causing the issue. Also some decks and cameras have audio playback volume settings which can also cause audio to be sent to premiere louder than what it started as. So if you give more detail I may be able to offer some sort of help.
One thing you might try though to remove that distortion is too add a lowpass filter to the audio, and start off by setting the low pass filter to like 3000 and just adjust by 500 up or down from there until the distortion goes away. I've had to do this in the past with audio that's distorted before. (Although I haven't experinced the specific issue you're experincing before.) Although it will make the persons voice sound  muffled it will take most of the distortion out. Which getting rid  of distortion at the cost of making it sound somewhat muffled is a decent trade off if worse comes to worse and you can't get the issue figured out.

  • SETTING to hear AUDIO while CAPTURING?

    Hi...
    (another) silly settings question.
How can I hear audio while capturing from my HDV deck?
When capturing from a DV device (a camera), the 'preview' box enabled me to monitor the audio from the tape while either screening it or when capturing it.
I don't see that 'preview' box as an option in the HDV log and caputure window.
Although I'm capturing audio from the HDV source, I can't hear it while it's loading. It's a little annoying as I'd like to be able to hear the tape as a way to decide if it's even worth capturing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

We're here all week, try the liver.
I've always been a believer in monitoring in the signal chain. Granted I don't work much with HDV-- but monitoring what is going into and out of the computer, rather than relying on the computer's built in audio seems to be the way to go. Then you know what's coming off the tape, and what's going back down to the tape.

  • This is a very simple question about multi-channel audio playback

I have an mp4 file that i made and i made it 7.1 surround sound, and i'm pretty sure that this 7.1 surround sound works, as it can be played in VLC. i'm using netstream to load my files now. How do i make it so that flash can playback all 8-channels of sound? I suppose kglad would know the answer

Flash doesn't support multi-channel audio (yet?)

  • Noob.. GB '08 on MBP Won't Record Right Channel Audio

Hi, I'm a noob to Macs so please forgive me if I've missed something obvious.
I wanted to do some light, goofing around with GB '08 V 4.1.2 with my Roland V-Drums. The Roland V-Drum module output uses two, 1/4" jacks (a "Left" and "Right" channel) which I have coming together in a "Y"-shaped stereo adapter, plugged into my MBP (Latest Leopard - bought new last week - 4 gigs of RAM, updated all OS & GB files 3 days ago) and for the life of me, I cannot get anything to play in the right-channel audio *but only when recording in GB* - otherwise both audio channels work fine.
My Roland V-Drum unit can do mono by simply using one of the two designated Output channels; then I use a mono plug instead of a stereo. Even then I only get my drums recorded on the left side!
I've gone into every obvious configuration setting I can find - both in System Preferences>Sounds and those within GB '08, but for the life of me, cannot find where I've set something wrong. I've swapped cables and adapters. I've also tried speaking into a microphone plugged in and the same thing happens when recording in Garageband - only the left channel gets any sound. If you pan the result to the right, all the sound just goes away.
Anyone have any suggestions to try? Is this a bug? TIA...

Thanks to all. - But Matt, I know you just solved the "built-in stuff not working problem"! You certainly win whatever Grand Prize goes along with diagnosing "Drummer Dysfunctional Disorder". Your suggestion most certainly works with the built-in stuff - Thank you!
Your welcome and... I'm pretty sure the award for curing Drummer Dysfunctional Disorder is a combination Nobel Prize + sneakers with the Nobel logo embroidered onto it, which is really great since I could use a new pair. I'm only grateful that this didn't occur last year because I would feel terribly guilty if my own award interfered with Al Gore's since, as I have read, he is also thrilled by the complementary sneakers.
Now see if Apple was really smart, they'd have the *opening screen* of GB ask: "Are you a drummer?" and if you answer "Yes", well that would take us to a much simpler version! Hmm... Perhaps I could design it for them - or be the "Test Monkey". But I digress...
I'm guessing your humility is not exactly warranted... but perhaps an even easier version could be developed and named something like, I don't know, iTunes?
I'm happy to report that, thanks to you Matt, my stream of obscenities is not only causing the LED to register but... I can *record them in stereo* too! I'll try your final suggestion after I sleep on it. Today, the built-in mic... tomorrow, the world!
Words to the wise! (particularly when recorded in stereo and including obscenities)
(I still hope it's ok to leave this as "unanswered" until I try recording my drums instead of the built-in mic, tomorrow)
I suppose there's a sort of philosophical appeal to leaving all questions unanswered: for what is knowledge, and what can we truly know? But now I digress...
    So back to your Garagebanding.
The thing is, if you can get your internal mic to work just fine, stereo and everything, that lets you know that at least your system is working, and that there isn't a bug that's crawled into it and is messing things up. Knowing that, you can narrow down your search for the culprit. If the internal mic works just fine, and the software works just fine, what is it about your original setup that's broken?
I would go back to the notion that the computer never received both channels of your output (its input) to begin with, and that perhaps the physical plug is either mono or, by virtue of its shape, not able to properly seat itself in order to make contact on both channels. That's just a guess, but at least the search for the culprit has been narrowed down to likely suspects.
(One possibly helpful distinction: a mono signal can record to both channels through a stereo minijack, but perhaps if the minjack itself is mono - or not connecting to both channels of the input - the signal (stereo or otherwise) might be restricted to one side?)

  • AAC and multi-channel audio

Can AAC be used to encode multi-channel audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio?
DTS-HD Master Audio is an optional audio format in Blu-Ray. It uses lossless compression.
There are other audio formats from Dolby Digital, for example, that are used to encode HD audio in Blu-Ray. Can AAC be used to encode those as well, without any loss of information?
Is there any work in progress to make HD audio such as DTS-HD Master Audio available discretely on disc, like what the older DVD-Audio format made possible for 5.1 channel surround sound on disc?
    Thanks.

What adjustments do you want to make?

  • No multi-channel audio from DVD Player or Quicktime?

I have the A52Codec 1.7.6 installed. The codec preferences are set to output multi-channel audio. I have my Audio MIDI setup speaker configuration setup for multi-channel audio and the speaker assignment tests are all perfect. VLC plays back files with AC-3 soundtracks in perfect 5.1 multi-channel sound. Final Cut plays multi-channel audio properly as well.
When I watch a DVD, it is decoded to stereo. The dialog on 5.1 always comes from the left and right speakers and never from the center channel. It doesn't matter whether I remove the A52Codec and try again the result is aways the same, 5.1 audio in Quicktime and DVD Payer gets decoded to stereo. It is not that extra channels are missing, if that were true I'd get no dialog at all.
What do I have to do to make the DVD and Quicktime multi-channel audio decode as multi-channel audio and not stereo.

I'm not sure if this will resolve your issue or not, but have you configured it using /Utilities/Audi MIDI Setup ?
