4 GB 3rd Gen Nano only holds 450 songs...whats up?

A friend of mine just bought a 4 GB iPod nano in June. He keeps on trying to put 1000 songs on it like its supposed to hold. He has an HP that runs Vista.
I've tried clearing it and restoring the songs back on it, reformatting the songs to a smaller bit rate, and upgrading the software, but it still only holds 450 songs. There are no videos, photos, contacts, etc. Only music. I'm at my wit's end. Any other suggestions?

the only thing i could tell you is to do a restore to your ipod, to clear everything off of it, and then convert all of your songs in your library to aac 128kbps. between 320kbps mp3 format and 128kbps aac format, there really isn't much of a difference. there is a slight difference, and i don't see wasting all that room for such a small improvement in sound quality. one other thing is to make sure you aren't syncing videos, pictures, podcasts, and album artwork. if you've done all of that and you are still having space issues on your ipod, i'd take this discussion beyond the forums and have apple look into it. good luck.

  • IPod Nano only holds 75 songs

My iPod Nano will only hold 75 songs. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it? It also skips songs that I've downloaded from iTunes.

    Kind: Protected AAC audio file
    Sizes range from 2.8 - 4.4
    Bitrate is all 128 kbps
    Thanks.
Play one or more in iTunes and you'll get a chance to "authorize".
About the 75 on your nano, do the same File>Get info>Summary on several of them.
Otherwise just restore your nano and that should give you the space back... however if the songs are AIFF or WAV that may be reason for it only holds 75. Those encodings take LOTS of space.

  • IPod nano only holds 22 songs

New user - I put some songs I already had on my computer on the nano - it only held 22 songs - I know it is due to the format AIF - can I now convert to AAC or MP3? How? I transferred to iBook G4 with iTunes - tho't it converted to AAC by default - I need more than 22 songs on the nano. Do I have to redo from CD? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes, you will need to convert your music to AAc or MP3 (both are compatible on an iPod).
See these two links about your kind of situation, and see if they help:

My song files are too big for my small iPod
Or, it could be an issue that you iPod has "fake" spaced that isn't truly used. Try restoring your iPod through the iPod Updater (go ahead and try this first):

  • 3rd gen nano: None of the songs play

I havent used it in a coupole years, but now none of my songs play. When i hit play, the play icon changed from the pause to play in the top right corner, but the time bar wont move across and the song stays at 0:00. I tried restarting my computer, did all the software updates, re booting the ipod, putting new songs on the ipod but still nothing.
also, it only connects to itunes in disk mode.

Have you tried a complete restore of the iPod in iTunes?

  • 1GB Nano only holds 38 Songs????

Each of my songs are between 3 adn 5 megs. How can I make these files smaller through itunes?

To make the song file smaller:
    Click Edit > Preferences
    Click the Advanced tab
Click the Importing tab beneath it
Set it to AAC encoder at 128 kbps
    Click OK
Select all of the songs that are not iTMS purchases
Click Advanced > Convert to AAC
Please note that this will actually create a duplicate of each song, so you will need to go back and delete the originals.
It is also recommended to restore the iPod in this situation:

  • IPod Touch 3rd Gen not playing the selected songs - What's the problem?

Tried to play songs by selecting them but iPod Touch is overriding the selected songs with other songs and displaying those instead. This happens in all my Playlists. Jsut wondering if anyone else has ever encountered this and what is the suggested resolution? Last time I used iTunes, I did switch on the Genius DJ - unsure if this has caused the irregularities now? Help!

I have just posted a similar problem.(5/11/2011).  Did you get it resolved?

  • Can't download all songs in purchased to 3rd gen nano

I'm trying to download newly purchased songs to a 3rd gen nano. I receive an error msg saying the song can't be downloaded as it's not authorized to be downloaded to this computer. I've never encountered this problem before. I restored the nano to it's orig settings...and now...I can't reload many of the songs I had on the nano.
Thanks in advance for your support.

    Hey there,
Have you authorized the computer yet to play purchases from the iTunes store? If not, head to the Store drop down menu and choose "Authorize computer."
If it is, try de-authorizing your computer, logging out, logging back in, and re-authorizing.

  • Loading songs on ipod 3rd gen nano without itunes

is there a way to get songs onto the new Ipod 3rd gen nano 8GB without using Itunes? I have tried Xplay 2.3.5 and the playlist is all messed up. It would show all the songs in my hard drive on every single playlist created, even the On-the-Go list. I would hate to use Anapod because of they limited activation status. Itune is slow, and too restrictive for me. I hate itune with a passion. So does anyone know a way to get songs onto this ipod properly with Xplay or another good program? I have tried everything i know and I am able to throw this thing against the wall. thank you in advance!

I feel your pain. I have been fighting iTunes and QuickTime for 2 weeks trying to get it so that it does not interrupt my wireless USB connection when ejecting the Nano. A simple solution would be to use another program to manage the syncing of stuff to the iPod.

  • 3rd Gen Nano click wheel won't work in the car.  My OLD one worked, but this one doesn't.

I use a  PXDP iPod2Car iPod interface in my 02 Firebird.  My original, trusty 3rd gen. nano used to work perfectly.  It charged, and the steering wheel as well as main stereo controls operated it.  Something happened to it recently (my guess is the logic board went bad) and it does not come on at all, plugged in or not.  I actually have 2 more just like it that I was going to give away, but decided to keep.
Neither one of these will let me use the click wheel to scroll while plugged into the car - the old one did.
I can only change songs with the car's controls.
The only difference between these two and the old one, is that they have the HP logo on the back.  Are they later models, with perhaps different hardware?
Is there anything I can do about it?
Is there any hope for the old one?
I hate not being able to scroll at all!
    thanks in advance!

Contact PXDP.  They should know if their product is compatible with your iPod Nano.
Why won't my iPod play through my iPod speakers or car kit?

  • 3rd gen nano. Lock click wheel volume control but NOT track control???

My title basically says it all. I have a 3rd gen Nano that I want to use solely for a car and it won't be removed. Problem? The track control has to be done on the iPod itself as the car stereo won't do it, but the volume can be controlled by the car's head unit. That said I want the iPod volume to always be on max. Apparently the volume lock feature isn't what I'm looking for, nor is the hold switch. I want to lock the volume from being controlled by the scroll wheel but still be able to change tracks using the scroll wheel... without having to go into a menu or anything. The iPod will eternally be on shuffle and any track changes will just be skipping songs... and all done blindly just by touch... hence why it's driving me nuts I keep scrolling the volume down. Hope that makes some sense. I'm long-winded and wordy but not always clear. Lol

The system won't seem to let me post this anywhere... it's saying I'm not allowed whatever that means. Exception being this community. So sorry if I pi** everyone off by listing in the wrong location.

  • Scosche earphones that work with 3rd gen Nano

The original earphones that came with my 3rd generation 8 GB Ipod Nano recently got destroyed and I'm looking to buy a replacement set. I'd like to upgrade to a set with better sound quality and in the in-ear style that blocks out ambient noise. I've heard really good things about the Scosche IDR655m but I notice that in their compatibility listing they only list the Nano 5th generation.
All I'm really looking for is great sound and the noise-blocking feature of the in-ear style. I really don't care if the remote or mic features work. I didn't have them on my previous set and I don't mind having to skip songs or increase/decrease volume by messing with the actual Ipod.
What I'm wondering is...would the Scosche IDR655m still work and give me good sound quality and ambient noise reduction on a 3rd gen Nano? Or is there another more basic Scosche product that you would recommend that would still give me all of the great sound on a Nano 3rd gen but without all of the "bells and whistles" of the remote and mic features?

Could be. Are the phones you want to use the kind with a mic and button (like you would use with a smart phone)? I bought some V-Moda headphones to use with a Nokia phone, and thought I could use the button to answer the phone, but every time I plugged them in, the phone would think I was trying to dial a number. The phones didn't give me any problem with my iPod Classic 160, but it was an older one. If that's what you use, maybe try some more standard phones to see.
Maybe not the problem, but all I could think of.

  • 3rd gen nano shuts off automatically

When I dock my 3rd gen nano into my Bose portable it randomly shuts off and displays the battery charging screen on the nano.
When I press the start button the Bose remote the nano will play again for a few songs then shut off again. This doesn't happen with my ipod video.

I called Apple Support last night to make sure they are aware of this problem. While on the line, we tested a few scenarios, and it seems that the nano only shuts off automatically if the pause / play buttons are used on the Bose Sounddock remote. When I started the nano using its controls rather than the remote, everything worked fine, including adjusting the volume, skipping songs. Only the play / pause button caused the problem, but really, who knows at this point.
I also noticed this problem only after "upgrading" to firmware 1.0.2. I will try to restore the nano to its factory settings this evening (1.0.1) and see what happens.

  • 3rd Gen Nano connects and then QUICKLEY disconnects on an XP machine

Below are two postings I made in a different discussion area. The 30g iPod is now working fine, the Nano is as stated in the second post. Please to help me out? As stated below Apple says it works and it does on the wrong machine! As many of you out there know, sometimes a husbands and a wifes taste in music are different. I would like to keep my music on my machine. Thanks, reo52............
I have been running very well with my 30g Video iPod. I got an 8g nano as an award. I had just upgraded iTunes, tried hooking the nano up and now nothing works! iTunes never did find the nano. Did the r,r,r,r,r thing but could only reset because iTunes can not see the nano. Later I was syncing the 30g and was ejecting it and got a message stating it could not be ejected as there are files on it being used by another program. Did the 5R's on he 30g, the unit was syncing and the battery went low and interrupted the sync. Now iTunes can't see the 30g or the 8g. I did a reinstall of iTunes and still nothing. This is driving me to drink, HELP if you can. Thanks, reo52.............
Well, I sent the Nano in, it came back, Apple found no problems with it. When trying to sync it acted as before. With Apple on the phone I tried syncing to my wifes machine!?? I'll be dammed it synced right up!???! Well Apples says it works because it works on my wifes machine!! Well, why wont it work on my PC?!!. Both machines are running up to date iTunes, both have the same firewalls and virus programs and both are running XP with all service packs and updates installed. Now I can work around this for awhile but I have got to get that Nano to sync with my machine. Help if you can and Thanks again, reo52

    To Apple,
822 unresolved problems in "Connecting 3rd Gen Nano to a Windows Machine" , 25-50% on each page are problems with connecting a Nano in Windows and getting it recognized in Windows or iTunes or syncing errors(1st 5 pages). I think this qualifies as a serious problem. Many state that their Nano works on a different Windows machines and or an Apple machine, but not the one they use. Others and myself have sent their Nanos beck and Apple. Apple states "unit works fine, can not reproduce problem, or words to that effect" then Apple sends it back! It still will not work for the customer. So who has the problem? Owners who can not use their Nano? Apple who has the owners cash but maybe not their goodwill? I do not know, but I can see a Customer satisfaction problem developing. So APPLE please do your best to resolve this situation. It could be to your own advantage and help with those 822 unresolved problems on the Nano Pages. Thanks, reo52

  • 3rd Gen Nano random shutoff requiring reset

My sister got a 3rd Gen silver coloured Nano for her birthday back in May. Since mid-September, she's been having a problem where it will randomly shut down and nothing will work to get it to turn on again except a reset, even with an apparently full battery. It's getting to the point where I have to reset several times a day, just so she can use it. I'm wondering is this is a common problem and if there are any troubleshoots for it other than continuing to reset it?
It should be noted that she's using the iPod on a computer running Windows Vista, as I'm the only mac user in the family.

A friend gave me her 3rd Gen Nano today, and it had exactly the same problem you're having.  I also tried all the Apple support suggestions, and nothing they suggested worked. (Like you say, resetting doesnt work without the menu button!) This may sound crazy, but this little trick worked:
Press the click wheel firmly, and run your finger around and around it, as if you're scrolling, pressing firmly the whole time. The screen may go nuts, but don't worry about it. Press counter clockwise several time and clockwise several times. I had to do this probably ten times, but it worked!
I guess that when dirt or debris gets lodged under one of the buttons this method can help dislodge whatever is in the way and get the button working again. It's free, easy, and definitely worth a try. It got my menu button working again when nothing else did.

  • Pictures in iPhoto not syncing with 3rd gen Nano

Hi, I posted this in the iPod discussions area also but thought someone here may have the answer.
Hi all. When I go to sync pictures in iPhoto to my 4gig 3rd gen Nano, not all the picture are recognized. One album with 30 pics in it, only 3 are synced. this is happening in iTunes even before I hit the sync button. I have 1650 pictures in the total library but only 1495 are seen by iTunes and the Nano. Any thoughts ? thanks in advance.

    I confirm this problem.
Since I have a iPod Classic and for a few days a iPod nano 3rd gen, I can pre-sets station on the 80GB and not on the nano.
I suspect that the problem is not coming from the radio accessory but the nano.
