4 "Greatest Hits" albums combined

I have just loaded 4 "greatest Hits" albums (Sublime, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz and James Taylor) In my Itunes all looks fine.... in my Nano, under each of the four album covers all 58 songs are listed.... when I play the song the appropriate album cover is shown.... I'm sure its a sorting issue with the same album name I just can't figure out how to fix it... Thanks for any help!!!

The way I solved it was adding the artist to the name of the album i.e.: Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits" The other thing you could try is filling all the fields about the album like "Album Artist" and then specify a "sorting artist" for that album, so the songs f that particular album won't be associated with the other 3 albums you mentioned. As I said, I'm not sure about this since I solved it adding the artist name anyway. It won't hur to try right? Let me know if that helps.

Cover flow is not displaying greatest hits albums correctly.
To reproduce this, I have deleted all of my music out of itunes and sync'ed to my ipod - (160gb classic). At this point it is empty. Then I have loaded three greatest hits cds into itunes. (From mp3s that I have encoded). All are tagged with:
    - Name of track
    - Album Artist
    - Artist
    - Album Name
    - Track #
    - Compilation flag is off
    - all tracks have the correct artwork
Each of the albums have the same name = Greatest Hits.
The artist name and album artist is different for each of the three albums.
itunes shows each of the three albums seperately.
When I sync to the ipod, coverflow on the ipod shows only one album cover. (The cover of the first artist alphabetically.) All of the songs from all of the albums
Music->Artists lists the three artists correctly.
Music->Albums lists one album (incorrectly) and All songs (45 songs)
Setting sort-album to a unique value for each album e.g. Artist 1-GH, Artist 2-GH does not change anything.
Any ideas that don't involve changing the names of the albums slightly by capitalisation or adding spaces or adding the artist's name?
    Thanks

Nope. See my post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for a run down of the various issues. Short of waiting for a firmware fix you'll have to use one workaround or another. My preference is *Album - Album Artist* as this clearly shows which album is which when scanning for albums in the three panel browser.

  • Greatest Hits Albums

When I go into Cover Flow and select a song in a Greatest Hits Album, it show's all the songs from that Artist and all the other Artist's with Greatest Hits. I don't want to change the name of the CD and have to find and then paste the Album Art because iTunes does not find that CD in the database. Thank you for anyone that can help me out.

At the moment the iPod software doesn't work well with albums of the same name. Without using the workaround of changing the name to Artist A - Greatest Hits, Artist B - Greatest Hits etc, then you are pretty much stuck with the problem. You can your send feedback/feature requests on the issue directly to Apple at this link: Apple Product Feedback

  • IPod Classic can't tell the difference between "Greatest Hits" albums...

This is a strange problem, but my iPod Clasic seems to have trouble telling the difference between different albums with the title "Greatest Hits." It seems to only happen when I use CoverFlow, but when I select an album entitled Greatest Hits, it will show the list of songs, and it will include every song from every "Greatest Hits" album I have(meaning every album entitled "Greatest Hits"--albums that are greatest hits albums but have a different title aren't included).
I thought the problem might be that some them had the "Album Artist" section left blank, but I filled them all in correctly, and it's still happening.
    What should I do?

All albums with the same title are grouped together in Cover Flow, Greatest Hits is just the most likely example to make itself obvious. There at least three possible workarounds.
*Workaround #1* Change album title to *Album - Album Artist* whenever the same album title is used by more than one album artist.
*Workaround #2* Append different numbers of spaces to the album title of different albums whenever the same album title is used by more than one album artist.
*Workaround #3* Give each album a different value for *Sort Album*.

  • Help with 'Album View' when I have multiple artists with Greatest Hits...

Hi, I just got a new iPod Nano and I've started to import CD's I've had lying around. I came upon this problem when viewing my list in 'Album View', where Guns 'N Roses and Queen each have a 'Greatest Hits' album. iTunes lumps them both together without showing any album artwork.

  • "Greatest Hits" and cover flow

    Hi all,
In iTunes I have several "Greatest Hits" albums. Each of these has a different artist.
I have the following info set for each album.
Album, Artist, Album Artist, Art Work, grouping and disc number.
In coverflow (and music -> album) there is an entry for each album, however, each entry has all of the tracks for every "Greatest Hits" albums.
    So for example:
    Album A - Artist A - Tracks X Y Z
    Album B - Artist B - Tracks U V W
    I get entries for
    Album A - Artist A and Album B - Artist B. But both contact Tracks U V W X Y Z.
This isn't what I would expect to happen.
Anyone seen this before or know how I can sort it out?
    Thanks

There isn't any option as far as I know other than to change the names of these albums so they are not the same.
I noticed this a while back where I had 3 albums loaded onto my iPod all simply called "Best of" but by different artists (The Georgia Satellites, The Icicle Works and Gerry Rafferty).
When I selected The Georgia Satellites album I saw the iPod displaying over 60 tracks even though there were only 20 on the album. That's when I found tracks by the other two artists mixed among the GS album.
I've now made sure that these "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" albums all contain the name of the artist in the title.

  • Greatest hits problem

On my Itouch all of the artists that have a greatest hits album have been regroup on one single gigantic album! As long as the album name is greatest hits the Itouch dosen't seem to make any difference even if it a different singer or group. It did the same thing for the pretenders:the singles and Honeymoon suite :the singles.
On Itunes everything is seperate but not on the touch.
    Any clues?

    post concerns here:

But as of now nothing short of renaming the albums can fix the problem that I know of, hopefully this problem will be addressed in a future update.

  • The "Greatest Hits" Dilemma

Hi, thanks to the recent help of the forum i am fully enjoying my iPod, but i found one glitch that i could use some help with, i have 8 artist who's ablums are each title "Greatest Hits", well on my iPod each of these artist have the other "Greatest Hits" songs and album art under their artist name, in other words under each seperate artist name, there are 285 songs on all 8 albums when there should only be lets say 25 to 30 per each, how can i fix this???HELP

Yes, I agree. I've had similar problems with a few greatest hits albums that were resolve by simply putting the artist name followed by the greatest hits designation in the Album field, like this "Eagles - Greatest Hits". The Album Artist and Artist fields I tend to use for compilations, such as greatest hits of the 80s or something like that. In that case I'll put the real artist name in the Artist field, "Various Artists" under the Album Artist field and "Greatest Hits of the 80s" in the Album field. I do not use the compilation option in iTunes at all since it is incompatible with other media players (hint). And I use MediaMonkey to tag all my .MP3s with the proper info.

  • Issue with multiple Albums with the same name. (i.e. Greatest Hits)

I have multiple albums all with the same name (i.e. Greatest Hits). iTunes mixes all of the albums as one. All of the track 1s together, all track 2s together .... Is there a way for iTunes to recognize that there is more than 1 album with the same name? and to keep each album seperate.
    Thanks

You need to let iTunes know that they are different albums. The trick I use that work fine is to simply add the artist name of which it is the Greatest Hits in the "Album Artist".
That way, iTunes will keep your album together.

  • Assign Song To Multiple Albums (i.e. greatest hits)

    Hi guys
I was wondering whether there was a organised way on itunes to assign a particular song to more than one album.  Not as a duplicate, but rather so the same song appears within two albums (or more).  An example with this, for instance, will be with having all the studio Led Zeppelin albums, but wanting the greatest hits compilation album to feature select songs from earlier albums without the need to duplicate the songs?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

To not cater to compilation albums, or situations where the same song appears on several different albums is, quitr frankly, rubbish.
That situation is catered to, and here's how:  You buy or rip an album, you get a file of that track.  You buy or rip another album with the same song, and you get another version/copy of that track. Each album has one.
I suppose what baffles me is the decision to omit something like that and force people to have big gaps in their greatest hits or compilation albums, or have duplicte songs to fill in the gaps.
"Force" is a bit dramatic, but if you'd like to express your opinion or suggestions to Apple, here is the link:

  • HT3951 I downloaded the album..gap greatest hits,,but when i played the download.the song party train palyed about a minute and then  it went blank.i paid for the whole album, but i didnt get all the songs..how can i resolve this problem.thank you.

I downloaded the album the gap band greatest hits, but one song didnt play all the way through.the song was party train..i paid for the whole album, but didnt get what i paid for..how can i resolve this problem??

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • Cover Flow Greatest Hits Problem....

Has anyone seen the issue where all songs and album art work are combined in cover flow? When not using cover flow everything is fine and in order but when in cover flow mode. The song list for say Al Green's album called Greatest Hits also has the songs from Boston and Queen. If you scroll through coverflow you will not see these albums. If you swith to album view then choose Boston and go back to cover flow the Boston cover art is there but it still says Al Green. Very wierd....everything works fine in itunes
I have a week 38 touch, with 1.1.1 installed and iTunes 7.4.3.1. My guess is that is is just an issue on the touch that will have to be fixed later...unless I am wrong and some one else has a solution

Yeah, I've had that same problem also.
Also, some of my cover art wouldn't sync completely. In cover flow mode, you would see some albums' cover art, until you were directly at its album. Then it would show the blank music symbol.
I called Apple, and the technician told me to restore my iPod. I did. While the cover flow thing seems to be working fine now, I'm still seeing the 'blending" of albums of the same name - ala "The Black Album" from Prince and Jay-Z.

  • Greatest Hits

This has already been asked in another forum, but the solution given was more of a work around...
I don't remember which version this started in, but if one has multiple albums named "Greatest Hits" in iTunes and one is sorting the Library table by by album, iTunes first sorts by album and then by track number. This causes the albums to become mingled together in the display. This issue is even more annoying now in iTunes 7 with the "grouped with artwork" view. When sorting by album, there needs to be a way to sort my album, then artist, then track number. I attempted setting the albums up as compilations, but that did not help either.
The other thread suggested just putting the artist's name in brackets after the album name. While this works, I would rather fix the issue correctly.
Anyone have any viable solutions for this issue?
    TIA

Apple could fix this in iTunes pretty easily by adding a compilation check during sorting:
    1) Sort by album
    2) check to see if it is a compilation, if not, sort by artist
    3) Sort by track number
But for us, the altering the album title is the only real work around.

  • "Greatest Hits" confuses Cover Flow and Playlists

    Hi,
I have several albums by different artists titled "Greatest Hits" on my nano.
When I browse by Cover Flow or Playlists all the songs from every album titled "Greatest HIts" are listed.
My nano has the latest software. Does anyone have a cure?
    TIA

There's a workaround you can use, there's no definitive "cure" as such that I can quote for you. Add the Artist name to the title such as "Artist A - Greatest Hits", "Artist B - Greatest Hits" etc. Possibly some future version of the software may come along to sort the problem out permanently
