4 iPods + 1 iTune...Can we share purchased music?

I manually manage all 4 iPods (different ages and different taste in music) and its easy loading music from CD's, but can I purchase music from iTunes and have it downloaded to more than one iPod? (Note: I can have more than 1 iPod plugged in at the same time)
Thank you

See if this knowledge base article helps.  With some tunes, copyright  may limit your sharing.

  • IPod as Gift, can I buy purchased music for it in advance?

I am giving an iPod as a gift. Can I buy and download tunes to it using my account before I give it? Or does that screw up the registration process for the giftee?

The iPod has nothing to do with your iTunes account.
If you buy songs, they are yours, not whoever you are giving the iPod to and they will always remain yours.
If the other person wants to put them onto their computer you must give them your iTunes account password.
I suggest you buy them an iTunes gift card instead of the actual songs.
Or you can gift the songs to them in the iTunes store and they download them.

  • HT3819 I just bought my kids iPods.  How can we share music from my iTunes library without crossing over with text messages, etc?

I just bought my 3 kids iPods.  How can we share music from my iTunes library without crossing over with texts, apps, etc?

Create new IDs for each by:
Create a NEW account using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
    Use that Id only for:
    - Settings>Messages>Send and receive and sign out your ID and sign into the new one. Make sure that only that ID email address is listed.
    - Settings>FaceTime sign out of your ID and sign into the new . Make sure that under You can be reached at only the new ID email address is listed
    - Settings>iCloud and sign out and sign in with the new one
Continue to the one one common ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores. That is what controls purchases.

  • My husband and I use the same computer. He has his Itunes library that updates his ipod. I have my ITunes library that updates my ipod. How can we share songs between us?

My husband and I use the same home computer. He has his ITunes library that links to his Ipod. I have my ITunes library that links to my Ipod. How can we share songs between our libraries? (Windows - Vista)

    No. Its not possible.
Alternatively, create another user account in your computer. Install iTunes in that account with the library you wish to sync.

Can I share purchased books from ibooks with separate iTunes accounts?

While that's an understandable desire, the publishers don't want you buying a book and sharing it with multiple individuals who others would buy it. The inability to "share" a book or pass it on to a friend or relative when you're done is one of the drawbacks of ebooks vs traditional print ... And consider that when you pass on a real book to your wife, presumably you're not reading it at the same time. :-)
Some other ebooks do allow limited (time-constrained) sharing of books - Barnes & Noble, for one, I believe - and they have an app for the iPad that would allow you to read books on it.

Just sync them to the other iPod.  The iPod has to be signed into the iTunes account that purchased them.  You can also redownload them.  See:
    If in USA:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If not in USA, just make sure you are signed into the iTunes account that originally purchased them and repurchase them.

  • Can you share purchased books with Home Sharing?

Can you share purchased books (from IBooks) with Home Sharing? Music seems to share fine-books seem to be a problem.

In iTunes go to Preferences > Sharing and either share your entire library or make sure the Books playlist is checked.
You may then need to click the Import button to copy the book into your Library, I was not able to actually read the book without taking that step.

If they were imported from CDs, and you had no other backup of them on your system or another drive, you'll need to reimport them from CDs again.
For music purchased from the iTunes, you can redownload each track at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for more details.

  • Can't download purchased music to video iPod

I can't download purchased music and videos to my new 30GB video iPod.
When I try to copy videos or purchased I get an error "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" and iTunes quits after I close the dialog.
I ran the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 and Restored my iPod. I can download mp3s and a video I created in QT Pro but not purchased music or videos.
I uninstalled all previous iPodSetup installations, iTunes, QuickTime, rebooted and deleted the iTunes prefs file at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info\SC Info.sidb
I reinstalled iPod Updater 2006-01-10 and iTunes 6.0.2 and rebooted.
    The problem remains.

The problem is on my home computer. I am able to download the same purchased music from my work computer. I've not tried downloading it from my home computer while logged in as a different user. I'll try that tonight. The error message can be viewed at http://knouse.org/images/ituneserror.jpg

  • Can only see "purchased" music in iTunes

The rest of my music collection is visible on my iPod, but I can only access "purchased" from my laptop.  So, when I search for a song in my library, it fails to appear unless I have bought the song from Apple.  What happened to the music I imported?

Are you in the USA?  Currently you can only re-download movies in the USA and not even all of those (studio dependent).
Before deleting duplicates I would make sure it isn't just two links pointing to the same file.  If it is, delete the link but not the file (especially if you cannot download it again).  In general you need to exercise caution when dealing with duplicates because some are not really.

my husband and I each have and ipad2, can we share purchased apps, or do we have to purchase them separately

If you use the same iTunes account then you can put the same apps on both devices. If you have your own separate accounts then as long as both accounts are authorised on the computer that you sync from then again you can put the same apps on both devices.

    - Unless you also have the originals of the  music (CDs), you do not have right to the music.
    - If they were purchased in iTunes and you can transfer them by the following.  You must know and have control of  the iTunes account and password.

Aside from the fact that we have hijacked this thread - which we really shouldn't do - you would probably be better off posting questions or seeking advice in the iCloud portion of the Apple Support Communities. I'm sure that there are a lot of more experienced iCloud users on that site than I am.
I'm not a big believer in iCloud at this point, so my experience with it - other than downloading past purchases - is really pretty limited. I would not want to steer you down the wrong path.
However, here is the Apple iCloud support website that is loaded with all sorts of information and links to even more information. This will get you started anyway ....
